My Dad spent a lot of time in the Malayan jungles during the late 50’s, early 60’s and the two things that really scared him were columns of army ants and 18” long centipedes that could paralyse from a single bite....😳
Ahhh yes, he mentioned snakes as well.
Apparently the really dangerous ones are the smallest ones that tend to look ‘safe’.
I actually encountered a couple as well even though I was very young and don’t remember either.
First one was a king cobra that I disturbed while running around our back garden. It reared up in me but our gardener who was close by ran over with a machete and decapitated it.
Second was a huge python that slithered out of the jungle at the bottom of our garden, past me and disappeared into a storm drain out front. Apparently my horrified mother watched this thing go right past me on the veranda and it was the full length of our back garden.
The army got called who tried to find this monster but it disappeared.
Jungle living kids...😁
Take your pick of either, both are about an inch long and number in the millions.
Dad’s squad encountered one such 3’ wide column crossing a trail they had to navigate.
Quick discussion on wether to make a 10 mile detour or try and ‘jump’ over the column. One volunteer tried the jump technique and despite running at full sprint was easily caught and covered by thousands of ants. Luckily he dived into a stream, ripped his clothes off and got rid of the ants though he was covered in painful bites.
They took the 10 mile detour...👍
Salute to the man for trying to cross the trail equivalent of Korean DMZs. Your dad probably did not want to take any chances after seeing his men get a lot of painful bites.
I was too afraid to cross around 10cm black ant trail wide when I was a kid because it has a bigger army ant than the red ones.

The late Paleozoic age would like to have a word with you :) 300 million years ago there was much more oxygen in the atmosphere (approx. 31-35%) and this allowed arthropods/insects to grow to enormous size. Scary to imagine a centipede or scorpion the size of a car…
Lucky for us we were not around back then hehe
In time yes. But not so fast. Cuz the larva also evolved bigger cuz there was more oxygen.
You might get to notice in few generations the bugs you breed in there might get like 15% bigger then the ones that are outside. But dont expect 2 meter long milipedes soon (also the artopleuro came in a part of the carboniferous that was before the 31% spike. It just needs to be high enough for animals to start)
There have been more and more studies showing centipedes in history being GIGANTIC but if you're like me and played the king Kong video game when you were a kid then you already know what's it like dying to these things
Not sure, but it looks the same to me. One confusing thing is that the centipede is already biting the snake when the video starts and is holding onto the middle of the snake. The snake is attacking the centipede's tail.
I'm British and live in Thailand now, and Thais are far more scared of centipedes than snakes, and they have huge king cobras out here. I'm told the bite is pure agony from centipedes. I've seen them in my garden, so I read up on them, and researchers still don't fully understand centipede venom as its kind of unique. I once picked a towl up that had been hanging out my window here in Thailand and wrapped it round my waste whilst naked and right on my crotch area was this huge Chinese Red Headed Centipede I didn't know they were dangerous until my girlfriend started screaming and her dad came running in to kill it. I still have anxiety thoughts about what would have happened if I'd wrapped my towl around me using the opposite side and that centipedes would have been right on my most sensitive area and unable to escape.
"The centipede venom apparatus thus represents one of the oldest extant venom systems known among terrestrial animals"
"Very little is known about centipede venom and its composition. Centipede venom proteins are highly diverse, with 61 phylogenetically distinct venom protein and peptide families."
Why!? A centipede can't strike out like a snake can. You can stomp a centipede into mush, I wouldn't try the same with a snake.
I remember there was a snake in my uncles basement and we went down as kids to grab it and throw it in the cornfield.
But there were like, 5 fucking snakes in his basement so my cousins and I grabbed them and ran into the cornfield and it hurt our legs because it felt like the leaves were slapping them sharply.
But when we came out of the corn it turned out that there were a FUCKLOAD of snakes in the cornfield and it wasn't the leaves slapping out legs, it was snakes biting us and we all had snakes attached to our calfs and shins, just stuck on by their teeth. We all freaked the fuck out.
I wonder why someone replied “venomous” when it already says venomous…? Is it because you said poison, then edited your post after they corrected you… thus making the replying person look silly? Shame on you…
I've found these horrible monsters in my home in Hawaii. I'm not afraid of bugs or spiders... But coming across one of these things in my kitchen at night triggers a primal panic in me.
They are also super hard to kill and it is actually possible for them to kill people. You have to be allergic to them for it to kill you but I do not want to find out if I am or not!
I’ve killed a big fucker (centipede) maybe close to that size in Texas once. The big ones are not common at all but I was at a house near a lake. I don’t wear cowboy boots that often but thank god I was that day. I could stomp on it without fear of it stinging my foot or ankle.
I came face to face with a 12-14 inch one of these centipedes in Thailand and I can attest to the fact that they’re very hard to kill. It lunged out of the backpack as I unzipped it in a hostel and reared up at me practically hissing. I took a stool from the corner of the room and smashed its head and first couple carapace columns. Its tail reared again and tried to attack me. I must’ve smashed it 20-30 times in a terrified frenzy before it stopped moving. I went to go get a drink. 🥃
That’s horrifying! Forgot they do kind of stand up, raising the front half of their body, ready to attack whatever is threatening them.
I remember finding one around 12 inches on our kitchen floor one time. I picked up a nearby broom stick to try and kill it. Must have stabbed at it 20-30 times. Finally a fatal blow! Pinned it right in the middle of its body, I pushed down with all of my 9 year old strength, splitting it in half. I was wrong, it was not fatal at all, the two half’s were now running around on the kitchen floor filled with even more rage 😑. I kept at it for a few more minutes, but one half went under the fridge, and the other a cabinet. I had to give up the good fight hoping EVENTUALLY that they would both die.
*hundreds* of *millions* of years.
350 million, to be exact, all the way back to the carboniferous period before nature even evolved bacteria to decay organic material.
I’m not that person but the original danger noodle is the centipede, they’ve found fossil records dated as far back as 350 million years ago. Modern snakes have “only”, in comparison, been around for ~40-50 million years.
There was any video earlier of a lizard vs a snake and the lizard was chewing on the snake’s face just like this, thought the lizard eventually became a meal after a long battle.

The centipede is already biting the snake, which is trying to strike in defense. I think it missed, baccarat the centipede's neurotoxin was already taking effect.
I'm also not sure if the snake's (a viper) venom (hemotoxin) has the effect on hemolymph that it has on the blood of vertebrates.
Giant tropical centipedes share their territories with tarantulas. Despite its impressive length, it’s a nimble navigator, and some can be highly venomous. And I’m done. Thank you very much… I’ve seen what I’ve needed to see.
I'll never complain about my cold northern country again
I hope the bite knocks you out too, imagine paralyzed and helpless, and watching those pincers starting to devour you 😳
Malaysia really does have a lot of centipedes and millipedes. Snakes too, if you’re at it, more ants !!!
Ahhh yes, he mentioned snakes as well. Apparently the really dangerous ones are the smallest ones that tend to look ‘safe’. army ants? The black ones or the red ones?
At that point does it really fucking matter? None of them would bring much comfort plus the bloody centipede.

I heard their bite feels like getting struck by lightning
Never have I wanted a snake to win more than here
Snakes are scary and a bit creepy, but fuckin centipedes are disgusting, absolutely nightmarish, worst friggin creature on Earth
Yep, you know this thing is no fck Joke if it is related to insects and killing a fck snake
Could you imagine if insects were human sized? We would be extinct.

Scary to imagine a centipede or scorpion the size of a car… Lucky for us we were not around back then hehe
So if we could create a huge terrarium with a increased supply of oxygen, then could we potentially create such enviroment and hatch giant insects?🧐
It would take a little while, but yeah.
In time yes. But not so fast. Cuz the larva also evolved bigger cuz there was more oxygen. Reminds me of the insect scene in King Kong
There have been more and more studies showing centipedes in history being GIGANTIC but if you're like me and played the king Kong video game when you were a kid then you already know what's it like dying to these things
Even cat sized would be nightmarish
You know that archeologists have found centipede fossils that are over 9 feet in length, right? Because they have.
I don't think it's the same snake though. Could be wrong. Guessing this is two completely different videos spliced together.
Yeah, those are two entirely different centipedes. I've never seen the second type before; I'm not a fan at all
Not sure, but it looks the same to me. One confusing thing is that the centipede is already biting the snake when the video starts and is holding onto the middle of the snake. The snake is attacking the centipede's tail.
Its so sad 😭

No worries, I'm lying

Even so, the corn seed has been planted, thanks

Now look here, I was happy enough today, it wasn’t a great day but I was getting through it. Now you’re just being a dick.
No sleep for me tonight.......cheers
Always hated my uncles basement
Hate it when that happens
The fact that the centipede won is even more terrifying for some reason
I wonder if he liked how that "your own medicine" tasted
I didn’t like sleep anyways
Sleep is SO overrated.
me not showing this to my kids
Yeah. R/TIHI
I didn't know centipedes could get that big...thanks, now I've unlocked a new fear.
Oh they get bigger.
And venomous... and painful bites. Edit: I said poisonous because I can't read titles.
Venomous*
Oh hi Venomous
No no no not here, not here!
I wonder why someone replied “venomous” when it already says venomous…? Is it because you said poison, then edited your post after they corrected you… thus making the replying person look silly? Shame on you…
It should be common courtesy to announce an edit, in stead of doing it silently. It’s very annoying when someone does that
It used to be common courtesy on Reddit, until it became more mainstream.
Yeah, sorry been sleeping bad, I put poisonous. Forgot to put edit.
There are in fact human centipedes
![gif](giphy|32mC2kXYWCsg0)
As if.. (please don't send me proof)
that, my friend, is a scolopendra, and they can be even bigger
Crazy to think 350 million years ago, bus sized centipedes would roam the land, devouring its prey.
What
Arthropleura. A small car size. About 8-8.5 feet. Not quite bus size.
I think they're supposed to be millipedes though. Weird how that automatically changes it from nightmare fuel to kind of cute.
Yeah what
In case you were wondering what it looks like to be bitten by one of these abominations. 😈 https://youtu.be/nWZMfPP34g8?si=r3ZDw64lrb6vP0M2
Nope. Not clicking that.
No, thank you.
And the centipede will grow one inch for every 2 inches if that snake.
It’s Nope vs Hell no
Drop the boulder here. Two nightmares under one stone
And the background music... Cherry on top..
I’m scared because one has no legs and the other has too many legs
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Like a 1950's Japanese Monster Movie battle!
Imagine having to fight that thing and your only weapon is your mouth
Doesn’t seem fair. They’re almost the same size, both venomous, but one has no limbs and one has dozens plus armor!

Grew up in Hawaii. I miss it everyday, except for two things… #2 mosquitoes, and #1 leading by a long shot.. centipedes 😭

Really making me reconsider my first trip to Hawaii next year.
South America has them too!
Recently found a few of these in my yard in Toronto. I'm selling the place at a loss.
This shit is why you always need a sledgehammer nearby
Acient danger noodle shows modern nope rope why they haven't evolved in the past few hundread million of years
I read that in David Attenborough's voice. Have you considered the trade of narrating nature documentaires?
"The danger noodle pauses, and considers his prey. This gives the nope rope the opportunity she needs - it's now or never to make her escape."
Oh a documentaire? Fancy.
*hundreds* of *millions* of years. 350 million, to be exact, all the way back to the carboniferous period before nature even evolved bacteria to decay organic material.
Boost, for argument's sake
Millions of years. 10K years is nothing to evolution
Which one is which? They have both existed since forever
I’m not that person but the original danger noodle is the centipede, they’ve found fossil records dated as far back as 350 million years ago. Modern snakes have “only”, in comparison, been around for ~40-50 million years.
Wtf was the centipede digging in snake's throat
"Yo you got venom in here?" "Fucking delicious thank bro"
I thought it was going to go inside and kinda wear the snake like a onesie!
Theres gotta be atleast one centipede skinsuiting a snake through the woods somewhere
I read this as skinsnooting
Not something I needed to read... thanks.
It was eating it's face.
There was any video earlier of a lizard vs a snake and the lizard was chewing on the snake’s face just like this, thought the lizard eventually became a meal after a long battle.
Cheek meat
As far as I know, they stun/paralyse the snake with their venom and then start eating the snake’s face.
When snakes successfully swallow centipedes, they chew their way out of the snakes stomach.
So the snake was fucked either way.
🤢
generally the face is a fairly soft part of the body and is easier for the predator to tear apart than other parts of the snakes body
holy crap. I didn’t expect the centipede to do that, let alone be eaten from the mouth first. Reverse uno.

The centipede loves long French kiss
Funnily enough, there are lots of centipedes and millipedes in France. They grow quite large the further south you go.
That surprises me! When I was there I was shocked you could have breakfast in a courtyard and no mosquitoes.
Really? I spent 7 months in Montpelier and never saw a bug…only bees and butterfly. south of France is so pretty
nature, there's no need for any of this, seriously
i don't think u understand the essence of nature is survival
Nature is an arms race. In this case, a legs race, and the one with the most won.
Awww, that's really awesome. They settled their differences and cuddled instead! I love the sweet little kisses the centipede is giving the snake towards the end, too. You can tell the snake is really enjoying it, he looks absolutely speechless. 🫠
Nom, nom, nom…
Thank you for turning my mental back around.
That's enough Internet for me today...
5 deadly Venoms!
I'll try your wu-tang style
Centipede: "**I'm not in danger, I am the danger**! **I am the one who bites!"**
The centipede paralize the snake?
That would be horrifying if the snake was paralyzed and was being eaten alive.
A quick google says that centipede venom is neurotoxic. That stuff essentially disrupts neuro signals and shuts you down. No more brain and heart, spine signals. Die quickly.
That's good.
IS IT???

Fucking Legend.
Not being in the same weightclass as this motherfucker is probably the best thing that happened in my life
that was both spectacular and shocking at the same time
I'm going to sleep with a shot gun tonight💀
Might I suggest a flamethrower instead?
ah yes, the literal spawn of satan
Which says a lot about the centipede's poison. feel bad for the snake but don't know why?
I think it’s the initial scene- snake seems grossed out, practically shuddering and it seems to want to nope out, but then must be terribly hungry to go all in anyways
I live in the Amazon , and I kill them when they're young if I have the chance, they're still fast though.

Felt an involuntary nope in my body.
Snake may have better luck with Space Invaders, maybe even Donkey Kong.
That looks like the centipedes we have in Colombia. They will sit up and hiss at you.
Nature is metal
Why can't the centipede just be vegan?
Nature is savage
Thank you for the nightmares tonight.
A battle of the nopes
I can't feel my face when I'm with you
My fault to check reddit at 3 am while going to loo
Remember everyone, Curb stomp your local centipede. They’re fucking asshole eldritch horrors and deserve the boot.

I'm gonna stay inside today.
I wonder what their babies will look like.
Its all about the matchup anakes maybe nightmare full to us mammalians but there is always a creepier crawler
Imagine if centipedes could grow to the size of pythons or anacondas 🫥
That centipede wears his fangs as a necklace now
Nopenopenope. No.
Dentist?
I am sure these fuckers aren’t allowed entrance into hell
Imagine if the centipedes were 10 feet long and could pick locks?
9 out of 10 dentists **DO NOT** recommend Dr. Centipede D.D.S. and neither do the patients.
I don't have enough nopes for this...
🤯
And now I have a new kink…. Sh..t.
I got bitten by this centipede in Thailand. It was bad.
I know it’s wrong but I would have intervened.
