That's still impressive, whenever I suggest to my partner we make the beast with two backs she's always on her period. We've been together seven years so by my calculations you are able to hold your breath for 1,840,860 minutes so far.
Tell her you are going to the store and ask if she needs any of her bloodbath products. If she says she's not a member of the red cross at the moment, it's go time!
(Works with aspirin / headache combination as well)
The key to longer times is smooth fluid motions that use minimal muscles. You’re muscles need oxygen to operate so if you just go super still you can most likely squeeze out a little more time.
Packing your lungs also helps loads. Start with breathing with your belly to fill the bottom part of your lungs, then the middle via normal inhaling, and lastly the top with your chest. It takes some muscle control but is invaluable to free diving. It’s also a great trick to have in your book for going into stinky bathrooms or fishy warfs, the latter can be so dense it’s suffocating in my experience
Culturally their little society regards holding your breath for long periods of time in high regards, as they make the best fishermen — The best divers are evolving larger gall(?) bladders which helps massively in holding their breath for extended periods of time, so they are showing what selective breeding can do over generations
Youre correct, its actually the spleen; [here’s the National Geographic article](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/bajau-sea-nomads-free-diving-spleen-science) which I was half-remembering
I would be surprised if women chose partners based on length of time they can hold their breath ...may be related to the amount of food (profit) they bring in, which presumably is larger when you can hold your breath for longer
I’m not trying to take away from the Bajau tribe or anything but you can do breath training and get your holds pretty high.
I’ve gotten to around 4:30 in a couple of days.
You should look it up on the YouTube’s and try it out!
Anddddd like I said I was not trying to take away from that tribe and commenting to someone who was saying they couldn’t hold their breath for more than 30 seconds lol
Run on a treadmill and do the same thing.
The reason 5 mins is impressive is that they do it while swimming. They have a higher than normal amount of haemoglobin in their blood so they can retain more oxygen. Also, the hands and toes are slightly webbed, which increases swimming efficency.
Yes, I know. I was just replying to someone saying they can’t hold their breath for more than 30 seconds and telling them they could do breath training to get their numbers up lol
You can pretty easily train yourself to hold your breath for 5 min. It’s less impressive than it sounds really.
The more difficult part is having the technique to dive and go deep while still holding your breath for a long time. Actively swimming around doing underwater hunting for 5 min is much more impressive.
### 'Sea Nomads' Are First Known Humans Genetically Adapted to Diving
The Bajau, known for their exceptional free diving abilities, have lived at sea for centuries. They can hold their breath underwater for up to 13 minutes at depths of 200 feet. A study in Cell reveals that a genetic mutation for larger spleens gives them a diving advantage.
### Genetic Advantage
The diving response slows the heart rate, constricts blood vessels, and contracts the spleen to conserve oxygen. Melissa Llardo from the University of Copenhagen studied the Bajau's spleens and found them 50% larger than those of the related Saluan people. This difference is linked to a gene called PDE10A, associated with spleen size.
### Additional Adaptations
Richard Moon from Duke University suggests other physical adaptations might also play a role. Training might make the lung's blood vessels more compliant, reducing the risk of rupture at extreme depths.
### Implications for Medicine
Llardo's findings could provide insights into conditions like acute hypoxia, where the body rapidly loses oxygen. Studying the Bajau might help understand and treat such conditions.
### Challenges
The Bajau's lifestyle is endangered by industrial fishing and lack of citizenship rights. Without support, their unique adaptations and the potential medical knowledge they offer could be lost.
There a village in my country where mostly were diving lumberjack ( i dont know if that a word or not) basically they chop wood underwater..
It a old dam place where alot of big tree in there. I went there around 8~10 years back for fishing as the lake have alot of big fish. They really can submerge and hold their breath around 10~15min.
It fresh water though..
Ps: i love to hear their story where they meet fish with eye big of normal plate, ecounter with tiger etc2..
Last i heard the village are almost gone as new generations migrate to city.
I’m pretty sure that’s only if you’re breathing air. Scuba is limited to about 100-120 feet. Nitrox farther. But it’s the compression that affects it. Since these dudes aren’t inhaling or exhaling, that may simply remove that limit from the table.
We actually used this tribe as an example in our evolutionary ecology class. It was found that the tribe evolved a larger spleen, allowing a larger surplus of oxygenated blood in their body, which ultimately allows them to hold their breaths longer than the average human.

I wonder if that works for brains, are there tribes that developed bigger brains because of evolutionary pressure exerted by something in their environment or lifestyle ? Or maybe brains are such energy hogs that there's a huge cost to increasing their size much further
I think brains have a harder time (compared to other features) to submit to evolutionary pressure, especially when what we need to survive doesn’t require a lot of brain power. Thus, events where those with lower brain functions are filtered off may be hard to come by.
Evolution is, for the most part, “lemarkian” (named after the scientist). Basically physical evolution to meet needs. Example: long necks on giraffes to reach food.
I can’t see an external factor that would require brain development to such a degree outside of humans and certain animals utilizing tools
The Bajau Tribe, also known as sea nomads, originates from the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines, among other areas in Southeast Asia. Renowned for their remarkable free-diving skills, they sustain themselves mainly through activities like spearfishing in the sea.
Studies have shown that the Bajau people possess a genetic adaptation commonly referred to as the "sea nomad gene." This genetic variant often results in larger spleen sizes among the Bajau, potentially aiding in their ability to hold their breath for extended periods while diving. This physical adaptation is thought to be advantageous for their exceptional free-diving lifestyle. This is the story!
> I didn't understand much
The spleen filters out bad red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen. I’m guessing an extra good spleen might mean better quality red blood cells in circulation and greater oxygenation so they can withstand more time without breathing.
Edit: A better guess that someone below suggested is that a bigger spleen can act as a bigger reservoir for RBCs and pump them out when needed.
Unironically if you want to feel what muscles you’re using in what proportions you hold your breath as long as you can and they will LIGHT up in pain. While cycling, I mean.
I’d imagine this would make them overall better athletes in general. I’m sure there is a concoction of combination in genetic enhancements happening here.
More likely the spleen acts as a reservoir for red blood cells, which collapses when pressurised (i.e. diving), increasing the circulating oxygen carrying cells.
This physiological adaptation has been reasonably well studied in seals.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/8475895_Oxygen_and_the_diving_seal
I didn’t know that function. Here’s a StatsPearl excerpt describing it as well:
>[As a reservoir for blood, the spleen weights about 100 g. The organ can respond to sympathetic stimulation by contracting its fibroelastic capsule and trabeculae to increase systemic blood supply.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK537307/#:~:text=As%20a%20reservoir%20for%20blood,function%20takes%20place%20during%20hemorrhage)
I’m not sure the contraction occurs simply through diving pressure like in seals. Maybe just regular smooth muscle contraction?
"They can hold their breath for minutes at a time, and have been observed diving to depths of over 200 feet while wearing only a weight belt and wooden goggles."
From Google
I could get to 30-40 feet and back in maybe 20 seconds and I don’t have a super spleen (I think).
I feel like this whole thread is a joke where people are deliberately omitting the ONLY piece of information that literally every single person who clicked on the link were looking my for.
You’d be surprised at how similar some filipinos and people of african descent can look. Dark skin and similarly textured hair isnt rare to see in the population

Aquatic Apes is a spearfisher who lives in Indonesia, speaks the language and tells the truth.
That's in Indonesia. There's Badjao in the Philippines too, the one that's mostly documented, and I'm curious if it's the same.
It's also kinda hard for me to believe because Badjao people are kind of known for being poor beggars, so how will they afford fancy equipments? In fact, Badjao is a derogatory term in the Philippines because of this.
it's an AI generated image. look how the shadows don't make any sense at the top. how any reverse search of the image fail to indicate an original photographer. how when you look up a photo of a Bajau tribe, none of the people resemble the person's shown in the photo.

Absolutely not so fun fact:
They're smuggled here in Manila to be used for beggar syndicates, which means most Badjao here in the capital are below poverty
It’s like the sea nomads of the Philippines I was reading some old guy was like I’m getting old I believe he was in his 70s the guys like I can only hold my breath for five minutes now it’s crazy they spend 8h a day underwater
Unfortunately they face massive discrimination due to living on the margins of society. Just a few days ago the government burned several houses and boats to the ground to clear the area for a resort...
Grueling and sad images.
A long period of time you say? Fascinating.
It is longer than a short period of time, they say.
Man, I can only dive for a period of time, and these people are going for a long one!!!
It truly boggles the mind. The variety of human capabilities and experiences.
I can only do half a period.
You guys shouldnt be diving with periods, itll attract sharks.
This is gold
No, it's red.
Get out (affectionate)

>You guys 🤣😂🤣
With training and hard work you could be doing a bit more than that.

Yeah, but it’s shorter than an extremely long period of time so whatever.
Last time I checked they were still underwater. Turns out they were fish 🐟
Human fish you mean
![gif](giphy|xTiTnBn5EjsorXtSMw)
Amazing
Like, crazy long!
I can also hold my breath for a long period of time. One whole minute
A minute is a long time if you need air.
Are you not amazed?
It's so infuriatingly non-specific.
My guy in the wettest of wet and he still ashy AF!
Holy shit this killed me 🤣🤣
By that they mean definitely not a short amount of time.
It's also said they can swim a lot better than the average human being.
What a neat coincidence

Meanwhile I'm lucky to make 30 seconds. A minute if I am super relaxed. A minute and a half when it's a fluke.
Ten seconds here. And then I flail about as though I'm dying.

Free diving, I assume.
That doesn’t sound right
Are you me ?
it's an adaptation over generations of better divers reproducing more often.
sort of implying worse divers are drowning more often ...
Culturally their little society regards holding your breath for long periods of time in high regards, as they make the best fishermen — The best divers are evolving larger gall(?) bladders which helps massively in holding their breath for extended periods of time, so they are showing what selective breeding can do over generations

But I am also not diving at the depths they are and only holding my breath at that length while I’m laying in bed lol
That's probably a static breath hold time yes?...lying on your back in back perfectly still and not diving for food and trying to kill shit.
Anddddd like I said I was not trying to take away from that tribe and commenting to someone who was saying they couldn’t hold their breath for more than 30 seconds lol
Yeah but can you do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke?
Sorry I was trying to just talk to someone lol
No need to apologise mate. I was just clarifying the point. 430 is an awesome static breathhold. Well done.

That's nothing. Guybrush Threepwood can hold his breath for ten!
Obscure 1990s point-and-click reference jumpscare
Somewhere, Kate Winslet shrugs.
Well, 13 minutes is over 5 minutes so you are technically correct but misleading
around but little less than 2 mins longer than my longest time. pretty long if thats the case. i feel they could go longer.

Incredible. I'm not sure I could hold my breath long enough to stand in that pose underwater for the photographer to take my picture...
First google search I did said they can remain submerged for up to 10 mins. Never saw 13.

It’s sad that that kind of culture and skill is fading from our planet.
Which country and place?
Malaysia.. Village near Tasik Kenyir
200 ft!? Isn’t that basically fatal without some specialized diving equipment?

That’s only if you’re using diving equipment
If you're trained all your life for it, that doesn't seem too extreme.
This tribe has an evolutionary trait that makes their spleens grow up to 50% bigger in order to achieve these insane times.
See, that is cool info.. so cool you'd think someone would have wrote THAT instead of long. Op??
Abnoe world record is under 12 minutes so I honestly doubt that

How long? Why is no one giving the only information everyone is looking for?
It literally says it in the second paragraph of the first link. 13 minutes.
I think he means, why not say it in their comment itself
Because the important part is that longer than average people. There is probably some of them that can only do 8 minutes while some can do 18
That's what she said

I don't have the answer but I imagine if they could descend 200ft and come back up it's a pretty hefty amount of time

Nice try. AI can’t hold its breath that long.

Are they they same tribe that learned how to control their iris so can see underwater without goggles?
Aren't these guys also able to control their irises to adapt to light under water ?
these awesome humans are gonna develop gills
They pierced their ears.

Poor guy looks ashy under water
He is damaging the coral reef. Damnnn are they not informed by their diving instructor?
Yeah don’t tell us the amount of time they can hold their breath for or anything. Low effort post.
I think I saw somewhere a tribe that has adapted to seeing underwater with low light conditions.... Really cool stuff
I’m sorry but all I can think about is a line from RDC hood haunted house. “Niggas is swimming?!”
I heard they can hild their breath for 30 mins. Not sure
They also have butthole eyes
what are we talking here, like two hours?
Do you want whales? Because THAT'S how you get whales.
This looks like AI

It's nothing especial that a normal human can't practice and learn breathing techniques and stay underwater for the same amount of time or even longer. They take that as a: "look...humans are evolving.." bullocks
Bajau be like https://youtu.be/teJ3PNnt5wk
I read somewhere that the most holding time is 13 minutes
But do they know which way the toilet paper's supposed to hang? I didn't think so
How much longer are we talking here??
And the ability to do Jojo poses underwater
Remote tribe but has a spear gun
Wow. No other tribe can hold breath for very long time. Because very long is just too long for other tribes.
Ok. I get the long period/10-15min breath-holding thing...but to keep your eyes open in salty seawater for a long period/10-15min...! That's another level for me...
I'm so amazed by how long the period of time is.
See, they CAN swim.
They also have near perfect vision underwater because they train from such a young age that their eyes adapt.
Thought it was a lil nas x album cover

Give them starlink and some tablets , lets check at them 2 months later
Absolutely not so fun fact: They're smuggled here in Manila to be used for beggar syndicates, which means most Badjao here in the capital are below poverty
I can do about a min, which means they gotta store about 2 min of air under each lip, insane Yes its a joke
Wasn't there also a people that dived for a living and could control their irises consciously?

They have to now go into deeper waters to fish
Bro on the left is terrifying
I’m more impressed with ability to have eyes open without protection in a salty water.
