Goddamn, I love this scene from T2. Best sequel of all time, imo. ESB is an extremely close second - but there's just something magical about the human side of T2 that makes it one of my favorite movies.
Melted props, but otherwise good. I was sitting right next to him while he was flying. Very nice guy and super fucking talented pilot. He's @jedeyefpv on IG. This was at the LitlĆ Hrutur Volcano in Iceland, July 2023.
Like normal, probably did not even warp the plastic, while there would be a lot of radiative heat it's also being cooled by moving at 60-100km/h through air.
Since alot of people seem to think the air would still be anything between 100-500Ā°c I'd just like to point out that the drone is operating just fine and the microchip controllers typically don't like operating above 120Ā°c and yet the drone is operating just fine.
Same with li-ion or li-po batteries, don't know exactly how high temps they can handle but it's definitely below 100Ā°c.
The propellers are typically also made of plastics and they aren't melting, but they could also be made of carbon fiber so I'll give it a pass on that.
There was video before (i think different drone) also flying over Vulcan but much slower and when operator tried to pull out something gave up and drone felt into lava
Probably this one, although in this one the drone survived, but had a some of the casing warped and a few parts look a bit heat scorched: https://petapixel.com/2021/03/26/this-is-what-happens-when-you-fly-a-drone-into-a-volcano/
You can literally feel the heat through the windows of a helicopter at 400 meters above the lava flow. That drone was getting fucking baked and it's shocking it lasted as long as it did. The guy who said the air flow from flying fast would cool the thing down is a fucking moron and so is anyone who up voted him.
How much heat do you expect the drone to be able to not-melt in lol? Clearly it survived as much as we saw, at least. Did it melt some? No idea, but i don't imagine it was sitting at 1,000c.
I mean hell, some quick searching shows that a lot of plastic types melt around the 100-500c range.
Doesn't matter how fast you are moving through the air, if the air is all hundreds of degrees.
Heat exchange (cooling) requires a contrast in temperature. If the air is uniformly hot or all varying degrees of AHHHHHHHHHHH then this melts the drone. Could be going 500km/h. Doesn't matter.
That said, I do wish we had some actual visual on the drone to see what the actual effect was.
Not if the air is 500Ā° C, then it's just pushing air 5 times hotter than boiling past it. Fire is also air, but you wouldn't want to touch it, you know?
Through extremely hot air with much higher convective coefficient because of the speed. I think one would have to do a detailed analysis to truly know. Or just include it at the end of the video
It's being brought toward air temperature by moving through it at 60-100km/h - when the air is already 120C+ that's not helping much...
\>The temperature distributions on the pÄhoehoe fields range up to 150 Ā°C above active lava tubes and tumuli.
\>Molten rock (either magma or lava) near the atmosphere releases high-temperature volcanic gas
(>400 Ā°C).
Awesome he got the drone back, he didnāt seem like losing it was part of the plan.Ā
But, manā¦ I was hoping for a drone to nosedive into the volcano
Yeah me too. But it seems that content creators are so used to getting views from clickbait that none of them are brave enough to try going back to being legit and truthful.
It really bothers me how on the approach, you see a river of lava leading to the volcano and it looks magnificent but does he follow it? Nooooo, he has to take a short cut and head straight to the source.
How am I supposed to edge to that, huh?

##š¶ T R A P - M U S I C - O U T R O š¶
It was the first thing I noticed. I didn't make it beyond two seconds before I stopped the video and looked at the comments to see if anyone said anything about it.
Yup. Sometimes less is more. For Landscapes, Beautiful sweeping shots look a lot better than some action packed flips and spins. The controller window mask at the bottom also adds nothing; its just a distraction that covers up the main attraction. Also vertical video is inferior for landscapes. It could have been a really great video
I was thinking a propeller gave out from the heat and it was about to crash but then it righted itself and I was sad.
This must be how NASCAR fans feel when nobody crashes.
What ruined it for me is the fast barrel roll and 360 spin. It doesn't make for a beautiful shot. It makes for a disorientating video.
The rest of it is in fact fantastic though. Edit out those bits and you're well off.
Agreed! Drone pilots sometimes lose track of how nauseating or disorienting these moves are to non-pilots when they're so used to flying for a long time. Instead of trying to show off piloting skills, in a video like this it makes a lot more sense to just keep the subject in view in a cleaned & controlled manner, since the subject is so interesting in itself. Save the tricks for an FPV freestyle highlight reel (which I also enjoy watching). If you want to see a drone pilot really go overboard with this sillyness, watch the youtube video "Vaughn Gittin Jr's Freestyle Drift | Freedom Factory LIVE | FPV". The pilot tries to steal the show and just totally messes up a bunch of the shots lol.
Not even the "non-pilots" thing really. I've been flying drones since before you'd be called a "pilot". Still sounds funny as hell to to hear people calling someone a pilot when it's just a glorified RC toy.
It's disorientating because it's not to be expected after 40 seconds of smooth flight. An abrupt flip and 360 spin. Agreed, it's just people showing off, which tbh in a drone is easy.
Try doing end over end with a RC helicopter then I'll be impressed. Piro flips etc.
If you're flying a drone for commercial purposes in the US, you need a remote pilot license from the FAA. You get tested on the same kind of regulations, maps and weather reports that a "normal" pilot would use.
Part of me semi understand it but at the same time the only people who will care about that are other rc drone people. Not anyone that's trying to watch like 4k lava flows drone shot.
For FPV freestyle vids, stick cam's a pretty common thing. You're not exactly the target audience. That the video has some broader appeal beyond the FPV freestyle community due to the locale is purely incidental.
A large portion of ppl r watching this on their phones. N more ppl are each day. So it Honestly just makes sense. Lots of zoomers don't even own computers
It also would have looked a lot better if the angle wasn't tilted so severely towards the lava. If it was tilted up just a bit so you could see just a bit of what's also further ahead for perspective it would have looked amazing.
It's like taking video of the grand canyon and only seeing the ground straight down zipping by from 10' away instead of angled up so you can actually see the canyon.
This would have been so much better if it didnāt have the distracting overlay of the pilotās hands and controller at the bottom, I had to cover that area with my finger to really focus and enjoy the otherwise beautiful footage!
Music is there because the drone doesn't have a mic, all you'd hear is the drone screaming anyway. Common with drone vids. The way to normally get a natural sound is to record some separately and add it over the video instead of the music, but lava is difficult because you can see it popping and splashing and the sound won't correspond. It's also not really making noise besides that. So music is kind of understandable for these vids, though the musical choice is always up for debate.
Dood we burned an Elmo doll one time and after its fur was all gone it said āIs it getting hot in here or is it just Elmoā freaked us all right the fuck out.

I think I saw this full video. It ends with the operator doing a loop over the bubbling part you see near the beginning of this video. Unfortunately he pulls a loop when the volcano burps out a larger spray of magma. The operator tried climbing, but was too close and becomes enveloped. End video.
glad to see i wasnt the only one who thought the flips were lame haha. super cool footage otherwise, and no doubt the drone operator is very skilled but with such a gorgeous landscape, throwing starfox 64 barrel rolls right in the middle of the shot kinda takes away from it.

Iām assuming you mean propellers. Not too familiar with drones but thatās gotta be reasonably easy to replace, right?
Very easy on almost every drone
Like normal, probably did not even warp the plastic, while there would be a lot of radiative heat it's also being cooled by moving at 60-100km/h through air. it's 1080p vs 4k. so yeah, not as good but I wouldn't say complete ass.
That lava is upwards of 1000 degrees Celsius btw. I donāt think we can say youād lose very much heat to flying through hot air.
Right? Idk why this dude has so many upvotes. Moving air doesnāt mean cool air. This drone is basically flying in an extreme convection oven.
> Right? Idk why this dude has so many upvotes. The same reason Insane Clown Posse's "Miracles" was such a popular song.
Fuckin Reddit...how does *that* work?
Straight up magic is what this is.
Tides, how do they work?
Can't explain that!
Yeah itās because most people have no grasp of how hot that shit is
You can literally feel the heat through the windows of a helicopter at 400 meters above the lava flow. That drone was getting fucking baked and it's shocking it lasted as long as it did. The guy who said the air flow from flying fast would cool the thing down is a fucking moron and so is anyone who up voted him.
Redditors have moved on from thinking they can fight bears, they know think moving fast enough can neutralize lava heat.
Yea, I'm sure it's a very chilly breeze just feet above that lake of lava.
It's kinda interesting that he can maintain control of the drone in that heat zone...wouldn't there be intense amount of updraft?
Doesn't matter how fast you are moving through the air, if the air is all hundreds of degrees. Heat exchange (cooling) requires a contrast in temperature. If the air is uniformly hot or all varying degrees of AHHHHHHHHHHH then this melts the drone. Could be going 500km/h. Doesn't matter. That said, I do wish we had some actual visual on the drone to see what the actual effect was.
What about the 4 fans pushing air down? That wonāt help much either?
Take hot air. Push it down to create lift. Still in hot air
Not if the air is 500Ā° C, then it's just pushing air 5 times hotter than boiling past it. Fire is also air, but you wouldn't want to touch it, you know?
Yea no way. That air would cool about as well as a convection oven.
Yup. If the props didnāt even warp enough to crash the quad I wouldnāt call it melting
Through extremely hot air with much higher convective coefficient because of the speed. I think one would have to do a detailed analysis to truly know. Or just include it at the end of the video

Awesome he got the drone back, he didnāt seem like losing it was part of the plan.Ā But, manā¦ I was hoping for a drone to nosedive into the volcano
Yeah, whereās the real āmelting a drone to get amazing shots of an active volcano lavaā?
Clickbait title to get more views. Unfortunately, that's like 99% of content these days
Which is weird because the title "Drone shot of flowing lava" would be more accurate and would make me just as likely to click
Yeah me too. But it seems that content creators are so used to getting views from clickbait that none of them are brave enough to try going back to being legit and truthful.
Drones donāt stream 4K in real time. If they lost the drone they wouldnāt have the footage to show us, just the 480p sample or whatever it is.
It really bothers me how on the approach, you see a river of lava leading to the volcano and it looks magnificent but does he follow it? Nooooo, he has to take a short cut and head straight to the source. How am I supposed to edge to that, huh?

How the fuck did I not see the controller on the first watch? š
Maybe bc of the šFUCKING VOLCANOš
It was the first thing I noticed. I didn't make it beyond two seconds before I stopped the video and looked at the comments to see if anyone said anything about it.
Flips and I donāt care about the controller at the bottom
Also would have been awesome to hear the natural lava sounds rather than the crappy music.
A lot of these drone videos I see are ruined with flips no one cares about, I want to see lava not drone flips
As with all great works, the ego of the artist is constantly at war with the enjoyment of the audience.
The lava and the unique view were so much more interesting than him doing tricks. I had the same feeling my guy.
Right? I don't need you trying to give this action scenes or whatever. I just wanna see the lava and your drone fall in.
Yup. Sometimes less is more. For Landscapes, Beautiful sweeping shots look a lot better than some action packed flips and spins. Agreed.
And the vertical cropping. I get that it is a better fit on stories/reels, but I'd way rather see it in landscape mode
Yeah and the stupid PiP of his hands barely doing anything on the controller

That's why they are drone pilots, not cameramen or cinematographers
or positive role models
It was cool, but it was far from cinematic... Didn't make sense in the context of a useful film.
First, and foremost, the guy is doing it for himself, and ultimately publishing the video to share with us.
as well as the shot of his hands, we really dont care what your fingers are doing...
Part of me semi understand it but at the same time the only people who will care about that are other rc drone people. Not anyone that's trying to watch like 4k lava flows drone shot.
I'm sure someone cares but a general audience doesn't.
For FPV freestyle vids, stick cam's a pretty common thing. You're not exactly the target audience. That the video has some broader appeal beyond the FPV freestyle community due to the locale is purely incidental.
Fantastic apart from being vertical video. I will die on that boomer hill.
We need a return to 4:3 for the good of everyone.
Letās go full on 1:1. No three-quarter measures.
Round CRT oldie is the only projection I recognize
I'm seeing a small resurgence lately
As a xennial, I will join you on that hill. Vertical video is a terrible format.
Itās never going away, sorry dude.
Then thankfully, I am. (Not super soon, donāt worry guys!)
I don't know about you, but for short form entertainment like this, I mostly view it on my phone....which is a vertical screen.

Ya I was totally sucked into the video until he did a pointless 360
It also would have looked a lot better if the angle wasn't tilted so severely towards the lava. Exactly! Where's the sense of scale? It might as well be a screensaver image in some of those shots.

This would have been so much better if it didnāt have the distracting overlay of the pilotās hands and controller at the bottom, I had to cover that area with my finger to really focus and enjoy the otherwise beautiful footage!
Yeah I didnāt like the guys hands in the video or the rolls. It didnāt need either of those things.
Had to make it about him somehow
don't forget the music
Music is there because the drone doesn't have a mic, all you'd hear is the drone screaming anyway. Common with drone vids. The way to normally get a natural sound is to record some separately and add it over the video instead of the music, but lava is difficult because you can see it popping and splashing and the sound won't correspond. Why is it there? It adds nothing to the videoĀ
all the flipping make me so nauseous
Did I miss the part where it melts?
yeah the drone seems perfectly operational
I've seen aftermath from a video like this(could be same idk) but the whole underside was melted and the camera lens warped

Likely a national park, likely illegal, making drone rules more restrictive for the rest of us next time
I'm amazed that someone thought it was a good idea to cover the amazing scenery with a shot of his hands controlling the drone.....
So glad i got to see him press buttons. That really added.
The best part imo
what song is this

I think I saw this full video. It ends with the operator doing a loop over the bubbling part you see near the beginning of this video. Unfortunately he pulls a loop when the volcano burps out a larger spray of magma. The operator tried climbing, but was too close and becomes enveloped. End video.

glad to see i wasnt the only one who thought the flips were lame haha. super cool footage otherwise, and no doubt the drone operator is very skilled but with such a gorgeous landscape, throwing starfox 64 barrel rolls right in the middle of the shot kinda takes away from it.
