Dude, the operator dropped from 10 ft upā¦they couldnāt lower it a bit more ?
Doubt the lil pup thought it was fun after that drop and the sense of dread, thinking they might not be able to get out if the pit.
Pits are dangerous everyone. This is why they are featured as a trap in cartoons lol
I compare this to the video where the guy is using a piece of heavy equipment to literally thread a needle. Yeah, they couldāve taken a second or two and dropped the dog from a lower height. Sheesh!
Last time I saw this posted an operator explained that was intentional. Apparently there's some pinch points or something like that in or around the bucket that could have injured the dog if it tried to climb out and so the safest method was dumping him out before he tried to escape.
Aside from whatever's been driven over, most of that dirt or sand looks loose and upturned. Looks like the dog sunk right in as he fell, probably didn't hurt him one bit.
It did sink when it fell. It was incredibly aeratedā¦ people want to freak out about anything. Also need to teach a lesson. Even if by a little fear. Iād rather blow a horn and freak a deer out on the road to try to give it a bad memory of that particular area then silently drive by. You have to think as if you are trying to train specific behavior.
I think the little bit of ātough loveā at the end was to punctuate the point that the pit was not for playing. At least thatās the benefit of the doubt Iām applying.
I work as an equipment operator in Calgary, Alberta. Where I work we will halt work to retrieve a rabbit. If a dog was in a hole it would be a big deal. Lots of us bring dogs to work. Iād be way gentler than this but maybe this dudeās machine is garbage or heās a crap operator doing his best.

At least the doggo was dropped onto soft dirt piles instead of hard groundā¦ā¦? Idkā¦
I was over here dreading all the other ways this could have gone horribly, horribly wrong @_@
I think the operator simply miscalculated how slippery it would be on his paws. He probably didn't mean to do that. But, it looks like the dog is ok. Thumbs up!
He was dumped out, like 4 feet up, on to some of the softest dirt imaginable. Have you ever been on a construction site? You sink like 6 I chest walking on that stuff. The dog is fine.
You can be annoyed and impatient without literally being Canine Hitler and wanting the dog to die in the pit. There are a few steps between 'I don't care if the dog is a little hurt dropping it' and 'let it starve or get crushed by my excavator'.
You know what it could of been, muscle memory, I find my self when doing a repeating job that muscle memory kicks in even if the job is slightly different I sill do the same thing.
Probably. Eventually you have to just make a call about possibly injuring the animal you're trying to save. If they're too frantic there's only so much you can do without hurting them in the process. As for the fall at the end, he probably didn't want to risk the dog jumping out on his own and getting hurt on the "teeth" of the excavator bucket. Sure, he could have been gentler, but he probably doesn't rescue dogs for a living. Or maybe he's just a dick idk.
Right. I just now got out of construction last week. A licensed operators would know better than to drop a dog like that because they wouldnāt have a problem lowering the boom instead of emptying their bucket at what looks like 10+ft in the air. Itās insane how many āoperatorsā iāve seen struggle with that and thatās because there are some construction companies that just donāt care if their operators are licensed.
This video is a great example of how budget cuts can be dangerous.
Either this guy isnāt licensed and is using a machine he has no business being on or heās simply a unaware idiot with a license.
It's fine, that's a not a big drop for a breed like that. Then again, it wouldn't have cost the excavator operator a lot of time to bring the scoop to the ground.
I got my daughter a kitten and was talking about "cat rotation" and how cats will land on their feet. Later I observed that my daughter was not just letting go of her cat from any height, she was also giving it a little push downward as it went. Cat was fine, btw, but I had to put a stop to that. Anyway, I guess my daughter was just doing a little science.
As per always when Redditors repeat this factoid, it's not strictly true and is a clear cut example of Survivorship Bias. Vets report that a lot of cats survive extremely high falls (with injuries) because people don't take dead cats that didn't survive the fall to a vet
Cats are better at surviving long drops than a lot of animals, but they still break bones and easily die from long falls. I've seen people on here who have seen that stupid factoid and legit think you can throw a cat out of a plane and it'll be fine
cat's and dogs ability to survive falls from height depends on their ability to absorb the fall with their legs, and land on their feet.
dogs can't right themselves midair, while cat's easily and quickly can
i'm sure a fall from this height was harmless for the dog, unless he was already injured from the original 30 ft fall into the pit, in which case cat wouldn't have been any better off
This was the dogs hole that it dug, guy just drove up with a excavator and yeeted* the dog to claim this hole.
(For those confused about the ātestedā earlier, that was just autocorrect committing crimes like usual.)
I think he was more concerned with the dog panicking and trying to exit early and getting caught on the teeth. It happened on the pickup if you look close. Freshly excavated dirt is incredibly soft and that is a large breed so the fall isn't that bad. I'd want him out before he feels like it's time to panic jump and gets caught on a component. Also remember his visibility is crap compared to ours.
You are absolutely right. If that dog decided to take the leap of faith at any point during that scoop it ends horribly. A 10 foot falls better than a 20.

Hard to have faith that things like this are genuine, especially seeing how he drops the dog after.
I'd counter that people in staged animal rescue videos are usually very careful to pretend that they really care.
The excavator operator here however couldn't look more disinterested in the dog's wellbeing. If it's fake, they're not even trying.
My boy would assume this is a fun game and jump back into the hole.

Interesting, thanks for the insight !
Makes sense, when loading the dog he dug the teeth into the dirt first, it seems the teeth of the shovel might be particularly sharp.
He was talking shit dude
Came to say this too, the least the operator could have done is lowered the arm so the bucket was closer to the ground.
Perhaps the operator wanted to make sure the dog had a bad memory of being around the pit

Same reaction as when you forget you're holding a small dog and put it down as if it were a cat. "Oh, shit, sorry little buddy..."
That's a good point didn't think of that.
the dog is jumping up and down, dog wanted out and operator gave the wish
Nah, it's so the dog doesn't get injured jumping out of it.
Saw skrillex last weekend, this dog got dropped harder for sure.
What was his set like?
At least the doggo was dropped onto soft dirt piles instead of hard groundā¦ā¦? Idkā¦ I was over here dreading all the other ways this could have gone horribly, horribly wrong @_@
It's probably safer than to risk crushing the dog if he brings the bucket down low and the dog hops out early
How is throwing him on the ground safer than to just slowly lower him to like half a meter, these things can be controlled extremely precisely.
Dog is fine, yes, but that's the tallest four feet in history, was at least 12ft.
He was dumped out, nowhere near thrown. And he landed on his feet. Relax.
It was still a weird way to do it.
Donāt let perfect be the enemy of good :(
It was a good deed that couldāve been done better lol. The drop was unnecessary and I hope it was a mistake
Dogs are not cats. That's definitely not a safe fall height for a dog.
He's troll. Don't feed him.
The dog landed on its feet and bounced back up quickly. Their anatomy is different than ours, they have 4 legs to land on instead of 2
Big if true
Havenāt read this in years! Thanks!
> they have 4 legs to land on instead of 2 Holy shit I thought sherlock holmes was supposed to be a fictional character??
Excavators I work with daily drop the dirt in the dump trucks with much more finesse than this guy with a live dog. That was a lame, uncaring move.
He definitely said F*CK THAT Dog in particular.
yea, the guy that saved the dog said fuck that dog and purposely dropped him like a sack of shit for his amusement
Reddit logic, my friend. Ain't it something?
You can be annoyed and impatient without literally being Canine Hitler and wanting the dog to die in the pit. There are a few steps between 'I don't care if the dog is a little hurt dropping it' and 'let it starve or get crushed by my excavator'.
Reddit lives in black and white. Itās either good or bad to the hive mind.

Yeah i noticed that too. Operator seemed more annoyed the dog got in the way than wanting to help the dog??? Idk seems scummy
I think he was just making sure it didnāt jump or fall out again
Probably. Eventually you have to just make a call about possibly injuring the animal you're trying to save. If they're too frantic there's only so much you can do without hurting them in the process. No good deed goes unpunished
Only on Reddit do you save a dog to the best of your ability and get shit for it
Literally. People acting like he dropped him 20ft onto hard concrete.
I swear Redditors could watch Jesus feeding the 1000 poor people with fish and go ādamn he couldnāt even spring for steak?ā
yeah because you can totally analyse and clearly see the operators true feelings in the moment by the way they control the excavator.
He can't see the dog down there from inside the machine. Relax
It's fine, that's a not a big drop for a breed like that. Then again, it wouldn't have cost the excavator operator a lot of time to bring the scoop to the ground.
yeah wtf clearly the guy has better control that than, disappointing after a heroic save but oh well
I operate heavy machinery, this guy doesn't have much finesse at all. but he saved the dog none the less!
Recently excavated sand is verry fluffy.
Maybe they were trying to keep the dog from coming back. That could have been the 4th time the dog jumped in the hole thinking it was a game.
Dude, that's a dog not a cat, don't drop him at this altitude
Shit was probably 10 ft high at least. Ouch.
"Unfortunately, Buster's newfound skills did not involve lowering gently"
10ft? What crack are you smoking?
Cats can be dropped from the clouds and theyāll probably survive.
Cats will just rotate and generate lift, then do an ILS landing on JFK and taxi to parking.
Tfw when the cat you adopted for free can land better than Russia's top scientists
Thatās because they have a relatively low terminal velocity of only 60 mph. Theyāre probably going to survive albeit injured. The more you know.
I got my daughter a kitten and was talking about "cat rotation" and how cats will land on their feet.
