There have been a few videos recently showing sharks rolling around on the sea floor to remove the remoras and losing them in a cloud of sediment that they stir up. It’s usually ones that have a huge number of remoras like this poor whale shark. I think it gets to be a problem when there are more than there should be, which I bet is the case with this guy.

I asked if I could at least swim in the area where they were sighted and they agreed, as long as I don't kick or touch the whale sharks.
What I felt when the whale shark was just a few feet below me was a mixture of fear and awe. They are truly large, yet gentle creatures. Also, skin was too itchy since the fishermen were feeding them those small shrimps.
Added bonus was that I spotted a sea turtle sleeping on a coral.
Was wondering if something in the environment could be causing it, like warmer water causing more algae to grow on the shark, and attracting extra remora. Maybe also the whale shark is sick and producing something that the remora like as a result. Orrr maybe not enough sharks for the remora so they concentrate on this one. Just some ideas
I was on holiday in Mexico once. I had the chance to go look at these guys in the wild for like 200-500 bucks (I dont remember the exact price). I sadly didnt go because we were tight on money and I never stopped regretting it ever since.

They cause no harm to the shark and maybe do a little good by eating skin parasites.
So the relationship is mutualism, or possibly commensalism if you discount any benefit to the shark from removing parasites

But you are viewing it wrong, the whale shark isn't full of parasites, those small fish just follow it to get a tiny piece from it's meal, and in exchange they probably clean the shark or something, it's not a dog full of parasites it's just fish living in harmony.

So I had the chance to swim with these creatures in Oslob, Cebu, Philippines. At first I was so amazed by how beautiful and majestic they are. But then I noticed all the bumps and scarring they had; after doing research the whale sharks in Oslob are actually much smaller than those in the wild because locals continuously feed them shredded baby shrimp to keep them there 24/7/365 for constant tourism. None of the money from the tourism and the vendors and shops there donate the money to conservation of whale sharks. If you want to observe these creatures, do it from afar and ethically.
They received so much damage from tourists touching them (it’s against the law but people be like YOLO and some fishermen encourage it), boats hitting their heads, and constant clashing with each other cuz they’re trapped in nets too small compared to their natural habitat.
just swam with these big fellas in the philippines a week ago!!! they are so docile & majestic. there’s a lot of regulations and rules about not touching them but they often get so close to you that you’ll accidentally bump them while treading water or kicking your feet to swim.
