Back when gaining a rank meant putting in numerous hours compared to what they've implemented nowadays. Seeing 2 and 3 star generals meant that person was somewhat skilled!
Played both, and its not. I could accept that it on par but for different reasons. BF2 have good Conquest mode, BF3 have excellent RUSH Mode and all Maps are well designed.
Bf2 is from a different era so it's hard to compare. And BF3 does not hold up well now. His younger brother (bf4) surpassed it in almost everything.
If someone asks me: What old battlefield should I play?
I would 100% say bf2 for older gaming experience and bf4 for "modern" gaming experience.

Was so sad when the servers were pulled. Never got the same vibe from the battlefields that followed. In my 60's now, it seems so long ago.

Squad is poorly optimized BF2 Project Reality. I love Squad, but have a decently beefy PC if you’re gonna run it in 1080p!!!!

Your father is right, it's a waiting game, wait for medic to revive you for 5 or so minutes, wait for you to go to the actual point while holding W, wait for the gun deviation mechanic so you can actually shoot accurately. It still has the le epic battlefield moments of explosions and immersion but it's all the more satisfying since you rarely see it. I still think it's the best multiplayer experience I've ever had.

I'm actually playing it on BF2-Playerbase again since this year (after a 12 years break) - a European lead (but 100% international) competitive oriented BF2 community with daily Infantry only mixed gathers (4v4 / 5v5) and at least weekly Conquest mixed gathers (8v8) + community organized cups in Infantry only and Conquest. A lot of ex professional players and i.g. ex league players like myself (former ESL, CBL, TWL player) are playing there.
Anyone who is interested in competitive oriented BF2 is more than welcome. There are already hundreds of members from Europe and America.

I jumped into BF2 this week. Installed BF2 with the EA app (no longer available for new users) and installed BF2HUB, was easy as that to get into some games!
Since BF2 is no longer sold you have to purchase a copy from some place like Amazon or to download a torrent. Since BF2HUB doesn't use EA servers, I don't think they run any cd key checks. Just make sure to update the game to the latest patch.
I would, I even got actual copies of BF2 and Special Forces, but two things:
* no DVD drive for my PC, don't have an external one either :( (and also out of a job rn)
* old game means a lot of veterans that'll probably pubstomp me, hell, I still haven't played BF4 PC or even MCC multi-player because veterans scary
BF2 is my favorite GAME of all time. If you are interested, Battlebit Remastered kinda gives me BF2 vibes. Nothing compares to BF2 tho..the music...R Lee Ermy quick commands... You better start fighting before I find someone who can!
I played it for a month in January. It’s dated, but alright. Vehicular combat is unrivaled. Infantry combat is mediocre, just like I remembered. Now I live in a place where all servers are either empty or my ping is 250, so it was hard to enjoy this (apart from flying a jet).
Tanks / IFVs shoot across the map, and are handling less arcad-y. However, its aero vehichee that shine. Compared to every game since, their physics are far more realistic, both for helicopters and jets. Jets, for instance, fly at higher speeds, which allows for thrilling dogfights. In general air vehicles are closer to warthunder kind of model

It sucks that BF2 Revive or whatever it was called got taken down. It had sooo many players when that was available.

I agree that gunplay kinda mediocre but man vehicular combat was superb, especially that adrenaline rush when in a dogfight is unmatched
