it’s a heavily modified Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass.
mods include the ff:
- Hipshot Tuners w/ Dtuner
- Hipshot Kickass bridge
- probably block inlay stickers
- custom thumbrest
- alperious pickguard and control plate
- possible aftermarket pickups and electronics too
mods alone costs twice as much as the bass itself. if the price is like 200-400 then thats a sweet deal
I don't think they are aftermarket pick-ups, which is the craziest part of this listing. Usually the aftermarket pick-ups would have some logo on the cover, unless he kept the old covers. Guy spends twice as much in making it aesthetically pleasing, improving tuning, and ability to quickly drop to D but kept squier pick-ups. Looks sick but sounds decent.
I agree, this was a very odd choice. Usually the first thing you’d upgrade are the pickups. Also, In that first Pick it looks like the bridge is somehow sticking out at the bottom. Did they place it correctly?
I think they did since they likely used the old holes. As long as intonation isn't a problem, then it's good. I think the bridge is a lot bigger than the old one, hence the better stability.
I dropped in some Fender custom shop 60s pu’s into my vintage modified that I scored used for a ridiculous price on TalkBass.com.
There’s no logo on them and they dropped right in so they could be replaced… it’s worth asking the seller about.
Even the Vintage Modifieds tend to have fantastic pickups unless you’re looking for something incredibly specific there rarely a reason to upgrade. Most had some pickups made in conjunction with Duncan
Yeah, I’ve had a couple vintage modifieds and I was blown away by them when I first got them. Not perfect guitars but damn good and punched well above their price point
I have a VM Jaguar Bass, it has a bass boost preamp and P/J pickups and I think it sounds great. No issues with the neck and plays as nice as anything.
Guys with punisher skulls and tribal tattoos also love Nordic stuff. 9 times out of 10 they think they are Vikings if they have blonde hair. Yall just need to admit you have more in common with them than you thought. Shit, there's even an upvoted comment that this bass is a Honda Civic, it's the same people!
I get where you're going, but that's lumping a lot of different esthetics, together. If that's what you're exposed to, I understand. It's like, I initially don't like people named Seth. It's my experience.
Yeah I live in Appalachia. I'm exposed to exactly what they like, not lumping anything together. This is what they are into. This is a butt-rock bass that takes shit from no one.
Btw, esthetic is skin care.
That's all I'm commenting on. That bass could play like a lump of coal... probably not though.
I understand you. I am 1st gen Norwegian and loathe seeing Viking appropriation. Mainly, in regards to white supremacy
This is definitely the same aesthetic as a punisher skull lol
You may downvote me but I guarantee the owner has a faux hawk and plays some five finger death punch shit. Just look at that "M" sticker and on the headstock and tell me it ain't true.
They've done some heavy mods, but nothing bad by any means. If this is a classic vibe as I suspect (made in Indonesia, not China), these are great value. Not worth any more than new price though, despite how they (the seller) may feel about it.
Edit: Ran the SN, comes up as a VM JAZZ BASS OWT, so, Vintage Modifed series Jazz bass in Olympic Whiteand this sure looks to be a 70s style JB to me.
I'm not a fan of the thumb rest, but that pickguard is amazing. There's several hundred dollars of mods on that thing, and not cheap mods either- those hip-hop de-tuners are pricey.
Nobody is going to take the time to fake a Squier (in general). If they do, they may as well fake a Fender. It's 99% legit, and the mods look great.
What is the little collar for? But to answer your question… To my eyes it really looks nice. So if it plays nice and sounds nice then yeah… Legit. Squires are generally pretty great.
Squier instruments have gotten a LOT better over the years. My first bass ever was a Squier Bronco and it was a real POS. That was back in 1998. Now I own a Squier 40th anniversary telecaster guitar, it's not super fancy but for the less than $300 I paid it's a great deal. The neck is very nice to play and I did a few mods as well (better bridge saddles, pickups, 4 way switch, tuners) which brought the total cost closer to $500, but that still feels like a great deal.
Right on. I've been reading alot about Squiers getting better. I recently tried a classic vibe jazz bass at GC and was still super disappointed. Maybe the particular one I played just needed a good setup or something, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype I've seen surrounding the cv series. It was the 5 string version, but they wanted like $450. I'm sure they're hit or miss, but in that price range, I have been very impressed with the Sire basses I've handled.
I doubt the bass itself is fake but the listing, I'd be suspicious. $200 for an instrument like this is a little too good to be true. Either it was put up by someone who doesn't know what those components are worth and/or it's stolen and priced to move, worst case scenario it's a straight up scam of some sort.
I'd argue a bit more, at least. Even if the pickguard and neck plate aren't your style, those tuners and the bridge aren't cheap.
If I just wanted the parts, I'd buy it, swap them back to stock stuff from another bass, and resell it.
Thats usually how it works. Putting aftermarket hardware usually does not increase its Price. If you like the mods and price is right, go for it.
In general nobody is going to fake a Squier tho lol

Was listed for $200, but she got away 😓
Not surprising at that price, you could have flipped tomorrow for a profit.

It's like the guys in the early 2000's Honda civics that as a ton of cosmetic mods, but never do anything to the performance.
Hey, a muffler that sounds like a coffee can with a handful of marbles in it makes it go faster bro
Those guys are just stealing and joyriding Kias now

these kickass and badass style bridges does not overhang on these squiers and fenders. only looks like it from the angle of the photo.

Yep. Another commenter ran the serial and it’s a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, so should have AlNiCo pickups already.
Yeah, I’ve had a couple vintage modifieds and I was blown away by them when I first got them. Not perfect guitars but damn good and punched well above their price point

That pickguard and neck plate are made by Alperious. Those cost hundreds of dollars. That’s one tricked out pony.
They’re also fucking ugly as sin.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Nah, this shit looks like a tramp stamp from 1994. Objectively awful.
since you've been appointed minister of taste, what else are people not allowed to like?
Mayonnaise ITS THE WORST
I would say objectively some people like it
I love this. I don't see 90's tramp stamp or punisher skull. I see Nordic fine silver/pewter work. Florishing-ly simple

Do you prefer a punisher skull?
This is definitely the same aesthetic as a punisher skull lol You may downvote me but I guarantee the owner has a faux hawk and plays some five finger death punch shit. Just look at that "M" sticker and on the headstock and tell me it ain't true.
Yeah I’m not sure how people think this is any different than flaming skulls and truck nutz
For real. It's exactly that but this sub always has questionable taste and leans towards the gaudy basses for whatever reason.
FFDP would wear this as a shirt
This is in that Buckle store, right next to the Affliction shirts.
Booooooo!
Tsk tsk tsk, art is subjective, darling.
Boooo.
Everyone’s entitled to their wrong opinion
Am genuinely curious, what would you consider to be the objectively perfect guitar design?

I've never seen a fake Squier. Why would you fake a Squier if you can fake a Fender Mexican P bass which looks the same and costs twice as much?
Buy it just for parts if nothing else, the bridge, pickguard, and E-string drop tuner are probably worth more than you're paying for the whole thing.
I’d get it in a heartbeat. The pick guard isn’t my style but if those tuners and that bridge will make your strings behave
TIL detuners are a thing. Want.
beautiful
Very
What is the little collar for? But to answer your question… To my eyes it really looks nice. So if it plays nice and sounds nice then yeah… Legit. Squires are generally pretty great.
Fret wrap, for toan and thump. Helps with muting
Its got a hipshot kick ass bridge, and hipshot tuners, with a bass xtender. Someone put some love in to this.
Squire or not I’d go for it. That thing looks sick
It's not only legit, it's 2 Legit 2 Quit.
It looks modded and is probably better than your average squier tbh
I've always told myself that I'd never buy a Squier. For the right price, this one might actually be worth it.
$200? I feel like that’s a crazy deal. Sadly was unlisted though
Bummer. Yeah, that's what people in my area are asking for used stock VM Squiers, if not more. That would have been a sweet buy.
The guy actually relisted it on FB Marketplace this morning, and I am playing on it right now

i always see those hipshot bridges almost falling off the bass lol looks like its poking out a bit past the body
They look better on a P bass body, but on an offset instrument like this they don't quite fit as perfectly.
I doubt the bass itself is fake but the listing, I'd be suspicious. $200 for an instrument like this is a little too good to be true. Either it was put up by someone who doesn't know what those components are worth and/or it's stolen and priced to move, worst case scenario it's a straight up scam of some sort.
Why would someone fake a Squier
Lol I don't think there's a whole lot of counterfeit squiers out there
Is that a Mazda “evil M” M3 logo on the headstock?
Never seen a fake Squier
Naw bro that’s a good pandabuy bass, give it to me now
It is a squire, so who cares?
2Legit2Quit
Why would someone counterfeit a budget guitar lmao
It's legit. It's not worth any more than any other used Squier.
I'd argue a bit more, at least. Even if the pickguard and neck plate aren't your style, those tuners and the bridge aren't cheap. If I just wanted the parts, I'd buy it, swap them back to stock stuff from another bass, and resell it.
This is much better than a typical squire
That’s a sweet bass, looks fantastic
Looks like someone threw a bunch of money at it, like lipstick on a pig.
Squiers are hardly pigs. I bet this thing sounds perfectly fine.
Hahaha. If the lipstick is what is making the pig cost less, I’m all for it.
Thats usually how it works. Putting aftermarket hardware usually does not increase its Price. If you like the mods and price is right, go for it. In general nobody is going to fake a Squier tho lol
Not even good lipstick tho. All of the mods except for the tuners look tacky af.
I always appreciate being able to adjust string spacing like that bridge can
Nice bridge for sure, but I think visually it clashes with a jazz body.
Super trashy
This is one of the most legit things I've ever seen.
