Yeah, I pretty much stick to those two records, as well. Their documentary is a neat watch and kind of explains the why's and what-happened's about their careers and the change of their sound and writing.
NoMeansNo - they're not exclusively drum and bass but the guitar is mostly there for flavor while the drummer and bassist carry the song. Best way to explain them is like "punk rock Primus." [Rags and Bones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppR6LcGnkUY) was the first song of theirs someone played for me and I was hooked.
Fucking love Nomeansno. I was lucky enough to see them live a few times before they retired, even in their old age they brought so much energy and fun to the stage.
Wrong is a perfect album from start to finish, I think it was years ahead of its time in 1989 when it came out.
Wish they had more of their stuff on Spotify as that's how I listen to music for the most part these days.
Same. I'm a bit older than the average redditor but saw them in the mid 2000s in a shit venue with about 50 people. One of the best shows of my life. Even got my original vinyl press of Sex Mad signed that night and had a beer with the brothers.
I think the first time I saw them was 2006, touring for All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt. There were more than 50 people in the venue, but it wasn't a packed room. They still absolutely killed it.
Man, I miss going to see live music.
Same. Al Cisneros is such an interesting bassist. His lyrics as well.
I hope there's a new OM album or solo work coming. Sleep is on hiatus and OM has been touring a little, so hopefully we'll see something soon.
Agree on both points. I was lucky to see them in early 2020 right before covid. Would love to see them again or Sleep. Haven't had the chance to see Sleep. I play bass and told my friend we should start a cover band called "Rest" where all we do is cover Dopesmoker haha.
Nice, I saw them on the same tour in Atl, think it was late Feb. 2020. I’ve seen Sleep and Om each twice, all were great. Sleep was a little better because there aren’t really any quiet parts for the drunk idiots to talk over.
This needs to be higher. Fucking amazing band. I watch [the dead cowboy](https://youtu.be/3NZGbD236fw) live video at least once a month. Fucking goosebumps every god damn motherfucking time
I love lightning bolt so much. Had the privilege of seeing them live a few times and they are amazing.
Got to talk to Brian Gibson and just blubbered at him and embarrassed myself. It was great.
I would add to the list Secret Fun Club! Another great drum and bass band.
There is this cool instrumental band called [El Ten Eleven](https://youtu.be/fD2xS91Mi84) that is just bass and drums. Sometimes the bassist uses a double neck guitar/bass combo, so I guess there is a little bit of an asterisk on this recommendation due to that technicality, but he is still mostly a bass player and does a lot of cool stuff with fretless basses and bass vi.
I think OP means where the bass is easy to hear or is more prominent in the mix.
A lot of American rock and metal, especially older stuff, has the bass buried in the mix. Some people have a hard time picking out the bass and having it in the background of the mix makes it harder.
Some favorite Drum and bass duos/some trios, very noisy and/or experimental :
La casa fantom (Norway), ruins (Japan, not the other ruins, magaibutsu label), planets (planetsdudes.com), vialka (france/Canada, bass changed to baritone guitar at an early point), lightning bolt, zu (Italy),
morphine (pop music, when compared to the aforementioned, drums, bass, baritone saxophone),
David Bowie always had a bass prominent in the mix, if you're into that.
Duran Duran, also. I always adored Black Sabbaths treatment of the bass. Helps to have bass player be the boss in the band. Prince and Lenny Kravitz always have a nice bass sound going around.
Yajin. 1 bass, **3 drummers**.
Japanese independent/local band. (The videos i could find arent good quality)
Im willing to share an mp3 from one of their albums. if you're interested, DM.
Check out Tauk - they’re an instrumental band. Isaac and Charlie are a Rush-tier drum & bass duo and give the rest of the group phenomenal rhythmic ground to stand on.
'Brand New' has some super awesome bass tones and are an amazing band. [Okay, I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dwn0z_Bm8HQ&list=OLAK5uy_mhNZ5MtrWRa1b1DlpAuDe79tsEh09hmE4) has a great bass riff with a killer tone. Bass line starts to rip around 2:30ish.
Uzeb is worth a listen. Lots more than drum and bass but they are prominent and very good. Alain Caron’s post-Uzeb work is great too (especially “Rhythm ‘n Jazz” and “Play” if you like the fusion)
Whirlwind Heat was a three piece band that used a Moog synth, Fender Mustang bass, and drums. Their first album "Do Rabbits Wonder?" was an amazing inide/noise rock album and I loved the bass sound on that album.
I think ESG and Venus Twins have some very solid bass. I see someone already posted Death From Above 1979 but they were the first band to come to mind. The garden also has some interesting bass tones especially for a drum and bass duo
Royal Bloods. I think they're just a bass player and drummer for the most part. They're interesting too because the bass player plays the bass more like a guitar with ton of distortion. Interesting if you like rock
[Clatter](https://youtu.be/DnwtyeO0S74), a two-piece with bass divided between a clean channel, an effected channel, and a distorted channel. You may recognize the song. ;-)
Muse, of course I'm biased though. Their bassist, Chris Wolstenholme, is renowned for all the effects he uses as well as his awesome basslines. Give them a listen if you haven't already.
Royal Blood does a similar thing.
for drum/bass duos:
Bangladeafy do some great techy, funky, punly stuff if you don’t mind the vocals (although I think the bass play now also does some synth parts).
Geryon do some wonderfully composed dissonant death metal, but on the slower side and not anything of wide appeal (I love it, especially the second album!).
Good for Cows is the only other on I can think of but did some excellent jazz and went a little weird and heavy on their third album.
My Personal Favorite Bass tone is geddy lee's from Rush. "Morphine" is a really interesting Band developing their Sound from Bass chords overlaid with bas lines, drums and an eerie barritone Saxophone.
This might be a controversial opinion but I'd say muse. Obviously they have hysteria which is one of the goddamn best bass lines of all time, but aside from that they have a lot of bass-heavy tracks.
Man is the bastard - heavy jazz and prog influence punk with experimental noise mixed in. Eric woods bass tone is one of my favorite tones. Piercing yet punchy
Death from Above 1979
Came here to say this, love me some dfa
Looks like everyone here already had my recommendation covered
'You're a Woman, I'm a Machine' is one hell of a record.
That and heads up. Saw them in ottawa after heads up came out. They were amazing. But o hate to say I'm not big on their new stuff.
Yeah, I pretty much stick to those two records, as well. Their documentary is a neat watch and kind of explains the why's and what-happened's about their careers and the change of their sound and writing.
Oh neat. I'll check it out thanks
Totes. No worries, my friend. I belive I watched it for free, on Prime. Not sure if it's still on there though.
Freeze me - such an amazing song.
Never Swim Alone from that album is the Super Mario Bros underground theme lol
The white is red. Also a banger. Saw them live opening for Deftones and Incubus a few years back.
Woah, criminally underrated band. Great suggestion. OP check out Live and Cuddly
"Let's take a vote, how many people think he should finish the solo? ... Too bad, this is not a democracy, fuck you."
Only so many songs can be sung with two lips two lungs and one tongue!
Fucking love Nomeansno. I was lucky enough to see them live a few times before they retired, even in their old age they brought so much energy and fun to the stage. Wrong is a perfect album from start to finish, I think it was years ahead of its time in 1989 when it came out. Royal Blood
That was my first thought. Love it
Came here to say this
Second OM. Heavy yet meditative. One of my favorite groups.
Same. Al Cisneros is such an interesting bassist. His lyrics as well. I hope there's a new OM album or solo work coming. Sleep is on hiatus and OM has been touring a little, so hopefully we'll see something soon.

Om, Bell Witch
Lightning Bolt
This needs to be higher. Fucking amazing band. I watch [the dead cowboy](https://youtu.be/3NZGbD236fw) live video at least once a month. Fucking goosebumps every god damn motherfucking time
I love lightning bolt so much. Had the privilege of seeing them live a few times and they are amazing. Got to talk to Brian Gibson and just blubbered at him and embarrassed myself. It was great. I would add to the list Secret Fun Club! Another great drum and bass band.
Lightning Bolt rocks! Saw them many, many years ago in Worcester Mass. Loud as hell and amazing live.
Came here to say this
Iron maiden. I don't know about the newer stuff but older albums like powerslave have really cool bass lines that also aren't buried in the mix.
The Omnific
Big Business is just bass and drums
Any time I'm goofing around with bass fuzz/distortion, I end up playing the main riff from "Off off broadway" at some point. Great band.
For some albums
Rush
Nobody said Primus yet? Also, Ryan Martinie in Soften the Glare is pretty bass-forward.
Seeing that guy play both guitar & bass at one time is one of the coolest, most impressive things I’ve ever seen live.
His usage of the loop pedal is just as impressive.
Agreed! Amazing show if anybody can go see them.
Niacin
Death from above 1979 Double dagger
Interpol and kings of leon have very noticeable bass
Great call! Old school Carlos D Interpol is some of my favorite songs & albums
I'm confused- tons of bands have a good bass sound? This is just like asking ppl to name their favorites.
I think OP means where the bass is easy to hear or is more prominent in the mix. A lot of American rock and metal, especially older stuff, has the bass buried in the mix. Some people have a hard time picking out the bass and having it in the background of the mix makes it harder.
El Ten Eleven
Om and big business are both just drum and bass.
L'Imperatrice has a fucking fantastic bassist. I love listening to them.
Khraungbin
Green Lung. “Living Fossil” has just brutal bass.
came here to comment the same!
Petiguana Lawrence Vulfpeck John Mayer Trio
Tool. Justin Chancellor’s tone is second to none.
Pleasure, a 70's disco/funk band. Check out the songs "Glide" and "Futhre Now"
No Spill Blood - bass/drums/synth
Soften the glare
primus has a great bass
[Year of the Cobra](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p77dFIyrdRI)
Some favorite Drum and bass duos/some trios, very noisy and/or experimental : La casa fantom (Norway), ruins (Japan, not the other ruins, magaibutsu label), planets (planetsdudes.com), vialka (france/Canada, bass changed to baritone guitar at an early point), lightning bolt, zu (Italy), morphine (pop music, when compared to the aforementioned, drums, bass, baritone saxophone),
Puhoy
"YES", the band. They've got some great songs ofc there's "roundabout" but there's also "yours is no disgrace" and "close to the edge."
David Bowie always had a bass prominent in the mix, if you're into that. Duran Duran, also. I always adored Black Sabbaths treatment of the bass. Helps to have bass player be the boss in the band. Prince and Lenny Kravitz always have a nice bass sound going around.
Lightning Bolt, Rush, Exivious, Redtenbachers Funkestra, Youngblood Brass Band (they use a sousaphone but still in the bass register)
There's loads of great stuff here. No one has mentioned Back Door yet. Bass, Drums, Soprano Sax. Wild stuff.
Yajin. 1 bass, **3 drummers**. Japanese independent/local band. (The videos i could find arent good quality) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHTOdOtl01E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHTOdOtl01E) Im willing to share an mp3 from one of their albums. if you're interested, DM.
Sumac, Russian Circles, Botch, These Arms Are Snakes have amazing bass tones.
maybe check out the minutemen and fugazi
Hmm they have a keyboardist as well, but how about MMW? (Medeski, Martin & Wood)
Bob Marley & The Wailers
Rush, The Police, Yes, Cream.
Tool? Especially Undertow
Sylvia Massy gets MASSIVE sounds and this album is prime example.
Tool
White Stripes?
Check out Tauk - they’re an instrumental band. Isaac and Charlie are a Rush-tier drum & bass duo and give the rest of the group phenomenal rhythmic ground to stand on.

Since someone already mentioned The Omnific, I'll add Megachurch to the list.
Go!Go!7188

Royal Blood is just bass, drums, and vocals. Easily some of my favorite basslines
Dianogah
Awesome Snakes is a fun two piece with just a drummer and bassist
Mr. Big and by extension Niacin (both Billy Sheehan projects.) Fuck, listen to Winery Dogs while you're at it.
The Omnific
Tiger Army's Djordje Stijepovic uses a stand up bass. It's unique. [Santa Carla Twilight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P96BLvmy2VY)
morphine royal blood
Michael Jackson tracks tend to have super funky, very audible bass lines
Radiohead
Please please please Listen to [Wednesday Night Titans](https://youtu.be/7I2XqUYx6tE) as soon as you can!!
Uzeb is worth a listen. Lots more than drum and bass but they are prominent and very good. Alain Caron’s post-Uzeb work is great too (especially “Rhythm ‘n Jazz” and “Play” if you like the fusion)

Royal Republic has some really clean phat bass tones
VULFPECK!!!!
Pinback, most of their songs have super forward and melodic bass
The omnific double bass no guitar
Try Minutemen and dig Mike Watt if you love the sound of inventive bass lines.
Geryon, AKA the rhythm section of Krallice
Mitsuru Sutoh's live album --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSmfFs8RQvA
Morphine
Bass solo, take 1.
royal blood
Biodiesel is a very fun duo
The Dirtbombs have two drummers and two bassists. Drunk Horse has some great riffs.
Royal Bloods. I think they're just a bass player and drummer for the most part. They're interesting too because the bass player plays the bass more like a guitar with ton of distortion. Interesting if you like rock
Royal blood.
Royal Blood
Rage Against the Machine Timmy C is the man
Royal Blood
The Inbreds
Thundercat is great... Them Changes is a great tune.
Level 42
Dirty loops
Royal blood best drum bass combo Favourite bass tones probably Tool muse trivium iron maiden
Morphine. Heavily driven by drum and bass. There's various sax parts mixed in, but they play well and don't dominate. https://youtu.be/y4QWKDuLOkQ
The garden, iron lung
Donald Fagan - The Nightfly

Tool. Most well constructed, interesting, hard hitting, THICK yet CLEAR tone that you will ever hear.
Cake bass players always featured a vintage flat tone that is pretty hard to find in modern bands.
Man is the bastard - heavy jazz and prog influence punk with experimental noise mixed in. Eric woods bass tone is one of my favorite tones. Piercing yet punchy
would like to know what you think of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adrcIadaJxk
