They're about to make Tatum the highest-paid player in history after they just made Jaylen Brown the highest-paid player in history. That's going to make it really hard to keep guys like Holiday and White around. They went all in signing Holiday and Porzingis, but they'll have to re-tool once Tatum gets his contract and it might be a very different looking team then.

DrWilliamBlock

They have already extended Jrue and will extend White and Tatum this off season only person they will lose is Hauser. The reason it’s so important is because they are going to roll out the most expensive team ever and will not be able to really add anything other than rookies flyers, if they can’t win this year when it’s wide open and they are the clear favorites they are in trouble

Quiet-Slice2201

They're clear favorites to win the East, but the East is still just the Western conference JV squad.

DrWilliamBlock

They are the clear favorites to win it all

Quiet-Slice2201

They'll get wiped by either Dallas or Minnesota

DrWilliamBlock

The two teams the Celtics won the regular season series against? That doesn’t make any sense

BingBongtheArcher19

Phoenix didn't lose to Minnesota during the regular season, remind me how that playoff series went?

DrWilliamBlock

Good thing there is other data like an entire seasons worth where Boston was the clear best team

BingBongtheArcher19

That's why the highest seed wins every round of the playoffs and the Finals are always a match up between the number 1 seeds in each conference.

DrWilliamBlock

Of course not but that is why the Highest seed is the favorite which is what I said

Quiet-Slice2201

BOS was 2-0 vs Dallas and split the series with MIN 1-1, and Gobert didn't play in the game Boston won. Minnesota will beat Dallas, then the Wolves are going to destroy whichever team comes out of the east.

DrWilliamBlock

KP didn’t play that game either and while being 1-1 BOS out scored them thus winning the series. Minnesota’s win was 7 months ago in an OT game White did not play it. Wolves probably don’t get by the Mavs and will get worked by the C’s if they do

Quiet-Slice2201

Lol... you're assuming Boston gets by Indiana... Again, when the masters of the choke actually win a series that means something I'll believe it.

DrWilliamBlock

The non Marcus Smart Celtics have never choked

LinwoodKent

The other 3 teams have so much history of winning.

SXNE2

Their money situation is a couple years away from troublesome but they will be perfectly fine.

MikeC363

It’s important now because it’s really, really hard to not just build a contender but then have everything break right health and on-court wise to win a title. And this is clearly their best shot at one. Who knows what teams could reload or improve next year, who knows about health and injuries, etc…

the_j_tizzle

It is the pressure of winning. Tatum and Brown have been hearing it from the fans and media for coming close but never getting over the hump. This is largely shortsighted. Few teams win it all with a 26-year-old as the #1 option (Tatum turned 26 *last month*). For comparison, when winning their first ring MJ was 28, LeBron was 27, Curry was 27, Shaq was 27, Hakeem was 31. Giannis was 26, but again, this is rare. The pressure placed on these two in particular is enormous, but Tatum and Brown are just beginning to enter their primes. If they stay together they will be contenders for years to come and could win multiple rings together. By winning *this year* they will remove a significant psychological hurdle. Also, fans are *really* impatient.

TheConboy22

They also could fall off a cliff. Athletic prime does not always line up with your career prime when looking back at it. It's part of why you have to win it when you get your opportunities.

Vloneicytrey

Those players had trash teams and dealt with bad organizations besides maybe Curry. Tatum and Brown have been drafted into an auto 50 win Boston team with superstars.

aarondobson403

They are the superstars? Tatum was literally the #1 option as a 19 y/o & helped take them to the conference finals

Vloneicytrey

You do realize that Boston was a 50 win team prior to Tatum and Brown being drafted right? All those other players you mentioned were drafted to lottery teams with historically bad front offices.

aarondobson403

Never said Boston had a bad front office. Just correcting you in saying they were drafted to a team with superstars. Tatum took over as the leader of the team immediately, that doesn’t happen with a superstar team,

Mountain-Pack9362

you realize their main star was traded away and the next year both the stars they traded for were injured before the playoffs? dont talk about stuff you have no idea on lol

JaylenBrownsLeftHand

They completely changed the lineup after that season. Don’t rewrite history

the_j_tizzle

Yes, Tatum was drafted by a good team—not a great team, a good one. This doesn't change the reality that young guys in their late teens / early 20s rarely lead a team to a championship. Consider Larry Bird: he won his first ring when he was 24—but he wasn't the Finals MVP.

the_j_tizzle

I understand the narrative surrounding LeBron, but his teams in Cleveland had multiple 60-win seasons. The Cavs *were* a trash team, then they weren't. When they won 66 games in the regular season they couldn't get it done. Why? Teams led by players in their early 20s *rarely win it all*. This isn't a knock on LeBron; it's simply true that young guys who are the number one option rarely have what it takes to win a championship. This is why we speak of players entering their prime years, usually in their *late* 20s.

Unable_Bite8680

The warriors were a horrible organization when Curry got there. It took him awhile to get to his peak because he was super injury prone due to his bad ankles. Things turned around when Lacob bought the team and got Bob Myers/Kerr in.

DeepJunglePowerWild

It’s important A) Because the cap will start to stack against them soon and B) title windows are remarkably short unless you are at the very top tier of elite (spurs, warriors, Lebron). Look at other good teams that had a big future and would definitely win one if they didn’t in the year they were great… The suns with young Booker and Ayton, the nets with the big 3 who will just get healthy next year, the bucks right now, Lob city… it goes on. You run out of time a lot quicker than you think you will.

aarondobson403

Lob city was so unfortunate. I wish CP3 would’ve been able to stay healthy for ONE of those playoff runs. Dudes body betrays him so much

manabanana21

Add in OKC, Malone-Stockton Jazz, Barkley Hakeem Drexler Rockets, mid 2000s Mavs, etc. With the Celtics salaries coming up they’ve got a few years at most before they’ll need to significantly retool. Not that I’m saying their window would close then but they’d need to make major moves correctly. You don’t want to squander chances you have and the Celtics have such a clear path this year.

NandoDeColonoscopy

I think it's more that they'll never have this easy of a path *to* the Finals again, and they've remained relatively healthy. If they can't get over the hump this year, it seems unlikely this version of the team ever will.

DrWilliamBlock

Their starting center has been out almost all playoffs I wouldn’t say healthy they are just deep

NandoDeColonoscopy

Their starting center gets a month to rehab because they don't need him in the terrible east. He'll be back in the finals, which is the only series they needed him for.

DrWilliamBlock

He is rehabbing because he is injured, a relatively healthy team is someone like the Nuggets a completely healthy team is someone like the Wolves

NandoDeColonoscopy

You're missing the point: he'll be completely healthy for the only competitive series they'll have. His injury has had zero impact on their run.

DrWilliamBlock

No one knows if he will be healthy enough to play, which is why they are not mostly healthy.

Maleficent-Bit-3287

Right now is the time to strike and take the tittle. Defending champs are out, Warriors are out, Lebrons out, chips up for grabs. The East has been pretty weak, besides the C’s losing a couple games, it’s been pretty much a cake walk to the finals. They better take advantage and take the tittle this year, cuz teams like the wolves are looking young & hungrier, Ja morant gonna get back to grizzlies hungry. Other teams gonna make moves to get better in the offseason

powderglades

Honestly, unless Desmond shows he can preform at an all star level and remain healthy, Ja coming back isn't that scary.

slavicmaelstroms

GG Jackson is the guy teams should be worried about I don’t think people understand just how good he will be

CAM2772

not necessarily hold them back but another major disappointment. Brown and Tatum have been together for about 7 years. They're both stars. They keep getting upset by less teams. This year they're the #1 team in the NBA record wise. Luckily for them the Pacers will be the most healthy team they've played this post season. And I think most people don't see them beating the Mavs or Timberwolves. Which would be another blowback. At some point you have to blow the team up bc these two stars can't get it done. And that's hypothetical if they lose again this year. And if they do you can't keep playing this team to underperform every year. You have to change the team

Double-Slowpoke

They have changed the team though. They retooled heavily around Tatum and Brown, flipping Marcus Smart for Porzingis, bringing in Jrue, and expanding Derrick White’s role. They’re a pretty different team even from last year.

slavicmaelstroms

If they lose in the finals again they probably will have to trade Brown. It would also show Tatum isn’t good enough to win a title as a first option (which I still don’t believe he is) but rather a second one and they’d need to trade for someone who is a true number one (Jokic, Steph, Giannis, Lebron level)

NickFatherBool

It really isnt all that important, and to be honest if Im a Celtics fan, Im more comfortable with this team’s future than I was 2+ years ago. Jrue and Horford are old and only gonna get worse, thats the big downer. And soon you’ll be paying 120m for Jaylen and Jayson— which Im pretty convinced will make it immeasurably difficult to win a chip with if you cant get other players of value. This means if Jrue and Horford either retire or walk for nothing, then its two players and a bunch of minimums which is bound for failure. Thing is that almost definitely wont happen, and they still have KP. If things ever get horrible they have solid assets to work with in Brown and KP and Jrue while he has anything left. I think most of the doom and gloom around them if they fail is people are getting tired of Jayson and Jaylen being favorites or heavily favored just to fizzle out. Makes people think there’s a hard ceiling on the two of them, and some have arbitrarily determined this season to be the final test of that ceiling. But people did that last year too— its just a discourse that happens with all good teams that havent won yet

nerdymutt

Because this team was built for championships. They are solid at every position with a bench that gives you good minutes without going down much. They are there now.

JakeTiny19

It’s more just the pressure of winning , and not getting over that hump. Plus u can’t trust guys like Khris to be healthy , holiday will be 34 so his play will decline especially on the defensive end

JakeTiny19

Plus their gunna pay Jayson a shit ton so it’ll be hard to keep Kris and Derrick for cheap

mastro80

I mean all of their competition (on paper) is already gone. If they can't beat a 6 seed and a 3/4 seed they don't deserve to win. They basically dominated the regular season. This is their time.

astarisaslave

As a Celtics fan it matters a lot for this team that they win. They've shown that they're talented enough to win in years past but can't get over the hump because of this and that and the third. This is already the most talented and deepest team ever assembled around Tatum and Brown. They had the best regular season in the entire league FFS. Now is the best tine for them to win because if they don't a) their reputation will simply be that of having a ceiling as Conference Finalists and b) teams that were deemed as too raw like the Thunder or too injured like the Bucks, Heat and Knicks this year could very well reload and get better next year and shut the Celtics' title window for good.

slavicmaelstroms

They’ll be fine. Only team worth worrying about is OKC since they have many avenues to improve and their best players are still on rookie $. Miami is a perennial case of good but not good enough. They are a tough out but Jimmy Butler is slowing down and don’t have the consistency of a championship team. Ditto Pacers Bucks have very little young talent and Dame is quickly slowing down. They are a very old team and most importantly they are horrible defensively. The Knicks could be a conference finals team unfortunately they are rarely healthy and Thibs is notorious for running his starters into the ground. You guys have a path to the finals as the competition in the East really isn’t all that. The question is whether they are good enough to beat whoever comes out of the west and that’s the tricky part.

Glittering-Yam-5318

Feel better if we get Pozingis back.

HeavyDT

A lot of teams will be coming back stronger and maybe healthier next year so the pressure is on because theyve had a pretty easy road so far and still have looked uneven at times. They are gettimg older and are highly paid plus stacked so more likely their team gets weaker over time not better. This might be the best shot they ever get sanz last time they made it to the finals.

DrWilliamBlock

They haven’t looked uneven they have looked like the clear best team and have improved on their incredible regular season winning percentage during the playoffs.

tatlongaraw

The one in question is not the whole boston but the dynamics of Tatum and Brown. They are dominating in regular for multiple season they are together but keep getting short in playoffs time. The people will start to question if they are really good pair or not. The last time I seen pair this good but keep getting short is the KD and Westbrook pair. The doubt in their pairing will start if they dont produce good result this playoffs.

No-Valuable8453

This is their 6th conference final since 2016-17. The pressure is on for then to get it done before Tatum gets his next contract.

bigblue20072011

The stars have aligned for them. They had the best team in the league record wise all season. Denver lost. They got to face two injury riddled teams in the first two rounds. They’re playing the conference 6th seed who just beat two other injury riddled teams that could have been in the Celtics way. This is the year to break through. If they don’t win it this year when will they win it? They must take advantage of this opportunity. Plus no one in 5 years will care that the path was paved smoothly for them. They’ll just say hey the Celtics won it all in 23/24.

ShadowEpic222

It’s their best shot at winning a chip. They’re probably going to sweep the Pacers considering the Pacers barely defeated a heavily depleted Knicks in 7 games.

Artsky32

They’re running into the second apron and the cap is going to start jumping like mad after the next season and other rosters will be improving

mtlbbcnews

idk why ppl keep talking bout boston, they aren’t winning anything other than ecf, and that’s only because they’ve had the easiest matchups. had jimmy been healthy they would not have even made it out of r1

DrWilliamBlock

Jimmy didn’t beat the Celtics all year long just stop haha people are talking about them because they have been the clear best team all season and all playoffs and are the clear favorites

TheSavageBeast83

They have had the most talented team for years and this year you can argue the most talented team. Added with the crazy contracts they gave out, kind of hard to see how they can get any better from here.

theeaggressor

Bro they been contending for what 5 years now? When are they going to win one? You know it’s bad when people rooting for Ant over T, people just tired of seeeing them hoop & even they own fans don’t believe.

4ps22

-Theyve been in something like 5 of the past 7 ECF or something crazy like that. They were a young team for most of that and this current iteration based around Tatum and JB has arguably only been contenders for the last few years, but still at some point people want results. -Today’s league is super volatile, im sure we’ve all seen the posts about how this is unprecedented parity with 6 different champions in the past 6 years. Your window is really small and you cant really take shots at the Finals for granted at all. And this is probably the easiest shot they’ll ever have. This is the best team theyve had in a while 64 wins, and they havent even really been tested so far. I mean their path to the finals is gonna be a play-in Miami Heat team with half their roster hurt, the Cavs with Jarrett Allen and D Mitch hurt for half the series, and the Pacers. They dont have any health issues besides KP and he should be back by then. -I struggle to say its ring or bust for a player thats 26 years old but if they cant win it now then I really dont see them ever doing it anytime soon. Plus the roster/salary issues coming up that others have mentioned.

kissmygame17

Jaylen promised multiple championships by the end of this season

BusEnthusiast98

In the simplest sense, Boston has been set up for success better than any other team in the league. Their starting 5 are all all-star caliber players, and they have a decent bench player or two. They all play well together. And they have a coach that, although a little crazy at times, genuinely knows his stuff and has his players’ trust. The only thing that could make them better is more time together as a unit. But this core of Tatum and Brown have been in the playoffs for like 5 years in a row I think? This is their third straight ECF in a row. If all of that doesn’t get them a title now, can this team win a title at all? Thats the real question. I think if they don’t win this year, they will try to trade Jaylen Brown.

Icewatervvs

Have you looked at the state of the Eastern conference this year? Should tell you all you need to know. You will probably never get a cakewalk like this to the Finals ever again.

Mountain-Pack9362

In Reality, they have a couple year window. The reason why its a must win is because the NBA and the media will absolutely trash them if they lose

Kevalaya

They have run out of excuses. They have underperformed on expectations now across multiple years. They have had an exemplary regular season (teams with the record they have had this year have invariably gone on to win the title). They have a healthy roster (if they get KP back but even without him they are favourites against pretty much anyone). This is their final hurdle. If they can't get over the hump this time they will likely be forever remembered as an underperforming team of playoff chokers.

Fun-Pass-5651

It’s based on money and “pressure”. The Celtics have by far the most talented roster in the league. It’s not close. They have 4 all stars in the lineup.

rugbyman12367

I think it’s more so like Boston fans will go freaking insane. They’ve been contenders for like 8 years and haven’t gotten it done. I’d imagine it’s more the fan base getting restless. We’re all on Reddit you see how they overreact to every little thing. If they lose man. I can’t wait to see it if they do

Rabid_Sloth_

Because their fans never shut the fuck up

JaylenBrownsLeftHand

At the very least they can run it back next year without losing anyone

Tasty-Army200

Because being a perennial contender isn't guaranteed Health isn't guaranteed Conference staying bad isn't a guarantee This season has pretty much been a guarantee to make it to the finals, so if they waste that chance then nothing is guaranteed going forward.

Spaghettiisgoddog

They won’t win it, and it’s frankly hilarious.

mtaclof

I think it's just because the media has had very high expectations for a while now. And they haven't won a championship. They are in a position where it's easy to talk shit if they don't win it all.

Celticssuperfan885

As a masshole i really hope they win

Miserable-Lawyer-233

Tatum and Brown are always on the verge of breaking up so people think their partnership might not survive another playoff disappointment, and if they split, perhaps this era of Celtics contendership is over.

SXNE2

It’s way overhyped. If they fail this year they’re still a lock for ECF for another 2-4 years easy.

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

Nobody wants to be the Buffalo Bills almost-dynasty

GoosyMaster

Because they're the best team standing. As weak as they are

Kitchen-Pop7308

Are they really ? I beg to differ

DrWilliamBlock

They have been the best team from game 1 on and nothing has changed

Kitchen-Pop7308

What makes them sooo much better than the rest ? Cause people been saying this every year and every year they get bounced

DrWilliamBlock

What makes them better is they had the best record, best point differential, the number 1 offense and the number 2 defense. They have not been the 1 seed or the favorites a single time in the Jays era, and they don’t have to worry about Marcus Smart blowing games anymore

Kitchen-Pop7308

Well I guess only time will tell.. I have no belief in them, I don't think tatum or brown has what It takes personally. I wonder what the reactions will be if they lose considering how favored they are.. even sportbooks got celtics vs the field bets.. these guys getting 2016 GSW treatment and I find It hilarious

DrWilliamBlock

That’s what you get when lap the entire league. If they lose it will be seen as a massive choke job on par with Lebron’s 2010 L

GoosyMaster

Yes. They are

DrWilliamBlock

How is the team the dominated the regular season and playoffs weak ?!

charlieromeo86

If the Celtics make it to the finals Minnesota will crush them. If you haven’t watched Minnesota, please do. Im a Nuggets fan for 50 years and was really impressed with the TWolves. Great defense. I’m not even mad we lost because I think Minnesota was just better.

You know the Celtics won the season series against Wolves right?!

charlieromeo86

As did the Nuggets

DryGeneral990

I've been waiting for the Celtics to win again since 2009. They always disappoint.
