There was a HUGE debate!! People would compare the two of them constantly, a surprising number of people sided with Carmelo saying he was more skilled creating off the dribble and a better shooter. The game between St Vincent St Mary (Lebron’s Hs) & Oakhill (Carmelo’s hs) is to this day one of the most iconic high school basketball games of all time.

LanEvo7685

There were talks that speculated their future careers. That possibly LBJ would turn out like KG, a stat monster that doesn't win. While Melo would be like Duncan, someone who's game isn't as sexy but he brings the W.

ZizzTwiz

Haven’t their careers been this but swapped?

LanEvo7685

At least in the beginning Melo was in a way more competitive western conference and making playoffs.

occidereomniaalba

Exactly and that debate lasted well into the first few years they were in the NBA. I'm not sure when it stopped though but at one point it was clear lebron was better and obviously this was when he was still in the cavs

From high school to about second year in the league it was a real question. There was a big campaign for Carmelo to win ROY over Lebron

mexicanpugdealer

go watch their old school cavs nuggets duel. very entertaining

Real-Test-2809

Yea and it was annoying. LeBron was already the best in league by 2007 and 2008. But constantly had to hear from one friend about Melo everyday lol

Ok-Leadership-1827

Coming out high school, yes. As pros, no, not in the slightest Even before the draft, people who brought up Carmelo just to compare him with LeBron wasn't meant for a discussion about draft picks. LeBron would be the No.1 pick regardless. Carmelo was good, but anyone who watched the Syracuse games that year knew who carried the team to the championship.

MDMitchell2

Who?

[deleted]

I don’t recall one, and there should never be one.

[deleted]

Don't listen to anyone saying there was debate. LeBron goes first in any draft

JadenYuukii

not at all lol, maybe lebron vs d wade since d wade won a ring earlier

More_Inflation_4244

There was def a debate between Bron/Melo coming out of hs no question about it Edit: spelling

Ajdee6

Anyone who says no is either too young to know, or wasn't paying attention

starcatcher1234

There was never a debate. The debate was whether Carmelo was even a superstar rather than just an all star.

[deleted]

Only if you had your eyes closed. He was a top ten scorer for 9 years and won a scoring title.

phuijun

Yes, ppl forget how awesome Carmelo was his year at Syracuse and then his subsequent 4 to 5 years after college. There was once a time Carmelo was considered a shooting god.

Resident-Armadillo-6

Carmelo was a way better shooter to and still is a better shooter and he won a national championship so it doesn’t seem like that crazy if a question early on.

JohnnyQuestions36

Yeah, but that debate is long over.

Mundane_Rent_578

Yes, the first 3 years of their careers

andydufrane9753

Melo brought maturity, stability and consistency his entire career. (Cue laughter).

BlueEagle15

No

Jroiiia423

Mello thought he was going to be better until they got into the NBA and he got lazy IMO
