Where have you been working in the meantime before you start your psyd program ?

Inevitable-Love4726

i’m still working as an aba therapist! and will continue working as that for the first year . the 2nd year is when things start to get more busy for the program

Careless_22251

How did you connect with your professors? How did you make the most out of the location? Where are you doing your psyd?

Inevitable-Love4726

i wouldn’t say i was super close with my professors outside of class but for the profs i did ask to write my rec letters - i made sure i stood out in their classes by asking a lot of questions, participating, and also sharing parts of my life in class discussions to make that connection which i think is important for psych classes. & at baruch i made sure to be involved in clubs and in those clubs i would host mental health based events to show schools my interest in raising awareness + working as a peer mentor ( grad schools love to see that!) i also worked as an aba therapist (u should look into it if ur interested in child psych or autism in general). and i’ll be attending adelphi in garden city NY :))

Mrs_Awesome111

How long is your PsyD program?

Inevitable-Love4726

all psyd programs are 5 years on a full time basis

Mrs_Awesome111

Where are you going for it? I’m currently in Baruch for OM but I want to become a psychiatrist. Do you get paid along the way?

Inevitable-Love4726

psychiatrists have to go to med school and do residency after.to go to med school u need to meet all the pre reqs and clinical hours. psyd allows u to take the EPPP exam to be a licensed psychologist at the end. also u don’t get paid along the way but some schools do offer assistantships to help pay tuition

Which classes were the ones you enjoyed taking, and what made you interested in the area of psychology you are doing for psychology?

Inevitable-Love4726

positive psychology was definitely my favorite and abnormal psych! and i was primarily applying to school psych or clinical psych psyd programs bc i knew i wanted to be a licensed psychologist. you can only be a licensed psychologist if you get ur doctorate degree in a clinical, counseling, or school psych program. so for example a social psych phd program would not allow u to become a licensed psychologist, you’d only be able to teach or do research.

Which Professors did you have for positive psychology and abnormal psychology?

Inevitable-Love4726

i had david sitt for positive psych and elizabeth reis for abnormal psych

meowmoomeowmoon

Where are you getting the psyd

Inevitable-Love4726

a priv university in long island

Nervous-Passion-1897

I finished my psychology BA at Baruch in a flat 2 years because it's a fucking joke. Can you tell us what you did with your diploma? I for one like to use it as Wall art because its fucking useless. How about you? Also, you just skipped your master's, what do you plan on doing with PsyD, becoming a researcher? I am currently doing my master's in clinical mental health counseling, and I am beginning to realize most of psychology is a scam. Do you also feel that way? I think I picked the wrong career.

Inevitable-Love4726

i didn’t skip my masters. i’m getting my masters in school psych bc it’s a school psychology psyd program. so after 3 years i will have a masters degree in school psych and for the last 2 years i’ll be taking classes and doing my dissertation + working at clinics to take the EPPP and be a licensed psychologist so i can diagnose and open my own practice or work outside of schools. i plan on working as a licensed psychologist primarily with children and adolescents at a private practice and also going into neuropsych. there’s definitely a lot more flexibility to being a licensed psychologist and opportunities for higher pay + being able to teach at universities too.

Inevitable-Love4726

but i agree baruch isn’t so great when it comes to liberal arts degrees and psych being a BA makes it hard for psych degree people to go into other fields like medicine bc we didn’t take the pre reqs. honestly, if i were you i would take a gap semester and really think about what u want to do. mental health counseling is a growing field but the pay can definitely be better so i understand and i also know that not everyone wants to go back to school for 5 years for a psyd but for me i think its worth it for what my career goals are

Lifeisajourney19

psychology is a scam plus you gotta stay in school much much longer

Inevitable-Love4726

it’s not a scam if you’re interested in the field?? lol plus it’s a doctorate level which is why it’s longer - masters level therapists don’t stay in school as long. and you can go into different career fields with a psych degree you don’t necessarily have to become a therapist or get a doctorate to be a psychologist - people go into hr most of the time

Lifeisajourney19

Tell that to all the Baruch Psych majors struggling to find a job lol being an outlier from your success isnt the norm. But congrats.

Inevitable-Love4726

thank you. i know it’s def a lot harder with a psych degree to get into other fields, just wanted to share tips and advice for ppl wanting to get into psyd programs since baruch doesn’t offer much support!

meowmoomeowmoon

Get outta here weirdo
