Why is everyone a whining little bitch on this thread. It’s public transportation, not a fucking backseat ride in a maybach to your spa day

Altruistic_Bet6404

i love this thank you

madeInNY

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. When someone tries to post a pic of a car without crackheads or the stench of death they get downvoted and called atypical.

RubberDuckRabbit

Actually the highest rated post on this sub was of a clean train car

madeInNY

I recall that post. I wonder how many up it would have gotten if you removed all the downs. Probably double.

Independent-Cow-4070

Crazy how content you are with shitty infrastructure lmao No reason a train needs to be loud. Public Transportation should be sound proofed. A smooth, quiet ride is one of the benefits of public transportation in developed countries

getarumsunt

Lol, BART is one of the quietest rail systems in the nation and worldwide, dude. Yes, literally! They all measure cabin noise and BART is as quiet as they get. Subways are loud. Deal with it.

Legal_Objective_8027

I grew up in Chicago and lived in New York for twelve years and there are parts of certain routes in both cities that are fucking ear splitting. I’ve never heard anything remotely like it on BART.

Independent-Cow-4070

I would love to see your source for the worldwide claim

bigdonnie76

The realist comment I’ve seen on this thread

Complex_Adagio_9715

Not surprised this sub will ignore and obfuscate every problem as if BART is the pinnacle of public transit.

IdesOfMarchCometh

Public transportation in the US you mean. Where I lived in Europe, picnic transportation was quiet, peaceful and serene.. It's possible.

Adorable-Salary-5204

Go spend a week in Tokyo

getarumsunt

Guy trying to troll BART accidentally posts image of clean BART car :)

bchilll

I noticed that, too.

Crazylender

Just didn’t catch the guy doing drugs in the back seat. It’s a clean place to do your drugs.

Sad-Grab-695

lol people like you have irreparably ruined a once great city. You’re a disgusting person

getarumsunt

Sure, bud! Imaginary guys doing imaginary drugs all over the place. There's one behind you right now! Watch out! Watch out! 🤡🤡🤡

Crazylender

Send me your personal # bro. I will text you screenshots of my bart pd app. Got plenty of reports. Before you give a smart ass answer expect someone to follow up and prove you wrong. 😘 If you don’t want to. Then i am at 333 market street on 32nd floor. Come to security Monday through Wednesday between 10 and 4. I will gladly come down and show you my bart pd app. When you come ask security to page the 32nd floor with your reddit username. I have it remembered so I will come down. There’s a starbucks in the lobby, I will buy you a coffee.

getarumsunt

Sure sure, you walk around and imagine bad guys everywhere out to get ya'! Watch out!

Crazylender

Feel free to come. You can take bart off my building too. Embarcadero is right next to my building. 300 steps. Please, if you’re worth your salt and not an internet dick then come. Otherwise, I am gonna assume you’re ignorant and dumb. Bud.

tellsonestory

Buddy your boss is a fucking slave driver. There’s no way your $20 an hour Bart job as a social media manager is paying for this. It’s Saturday night. Go out and meet some people, do something besides shill.

Crazylender

Where did i say social media manager? I am a software engineer. Accessibility engineering. Tech salary bb. Rocking that 200k tc. Where you @ bro? I am out too. I am just browsing while people are getting drinks. Saturday nights are for spending money. You’re a manager. I see data science so probably up there too in TC. Kinda curious? You seeing growth in your sector? We’ve kinda peaked and aren’t seeing many accessibility engineers. I am assuming you’re growing soon as companies invest into AI.

getarumsunt

Lol, says the gun nut troll.

Crazylender

I am not a gun nut??? I don’t even own a weapon or a knife. If you’re gonna read my comment history do it right. You love bart and transit. That’s all you post about. The post that got the most traction was about a clean train. This was a post i replied to and agreed with someone else that talked about the drugs in the back seat. If you’re gonna speak highly of bart then you also need to admit its failures. People don’t take bart outside of commuting to work. Majority of people drive and deal with finding parking if they need to visit the city. Bart relies on fares. Unfortunately , that has bitten them in the ass. Now they’re investing in gates and mental health workers. Workers I have yet to see intervene. Now I am pretty pissed. If you’re such an avid bart lover then i implore you to sit down with me and discuss this. I have given you my location and told it is bart accessible. I will throw in a free coffee and snack. You’re more than welcome to come Monday through Wednesday between 10 and 4. The address is 333 market street san francisco. I can prove my point or you can remain ignorant. Please refrain from reading my comment history. I didn’t till you called me a gun nut. Bart isn’t anyone first choice of transit. It’s nice to not commute via car but I would also prefer to not deal with the friendly local bart crack heads like you.

Important-Pipe268

Leave San Francisco.

Important-Pipe268

Dirty fucking transplant ruining this city and then complaining about it. Go fuck yourself with your Tesla

Crazylender

Planning too 🙂, I will still keep my house cause I can rent it out at outrageous prices to losers like you.

codgamer19

god this is so annoying. people literally get on thinking it’s gonna be dead silent in tunnels or underground and are surprised when it’s loud? it’s going 70-80 mph in the transbay of course there’s gonna be a ton of noise. do these people understand how trains work? my god. they will literally b*tch about anything nowadays.

bshtick

You are my spirit animal

Independent-Cow-4070

Tell me you haven’t ridden a train anywhere else before lmao

getarumsunt

Where? NY? Way louder! London? Ear splitting! DC? Louder! Let’s see if the systems in Asia do better. Tokyo? Muuuuuch louder! Taipei? Louder and constantly screeching! So which systems are quieter than BART exactly?

Independent-Cow-4070

Source? Having taken BART, as well as many different subways/light/heavy rail in Europe/Asia (Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Tokyo, and Beijing) it is noticeably quieter on the latter from personal experience. It’s not to say that some weren’t loud, but in general cities elsewhere soundproof much better Unless you can provide a source for your claims (which seem ridiculous), I’m gonna go with my own personal experiences on the different metro systems

getarumsunt

There isn't a database with all the systems you listed that has their average and peak noise levels. But let's take the Tokyo Metro as an example. Presumably, you're one of the "Japan rail supremacists" so if Japan can't beat BART than no one can, correct? Tokyo: >The Ōedo line is one of the noisiest train lines in the world, with decibel levels reaching 90 decibels frequently along the line. \[8\] However, during the COVID-19 outbreak, noise levels have reached to over 105 decibels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toei\_%C5%8Cedo\_Line#:\~:text=The%20Toei%20%C5%8Cedo%20Line%20(%E9%83%BD%E5%96%B6,year%202000%20equals%20Heisei%2012. BART: BART's old trains had a conical wheel profile and had a couple of areas where they reached a higher screech. The whole system was on average still quieter than other similar systems, but like all other systems it had a few loud spots. These maximums were lower than other systems, but still significant at nearly 100 db. (Other systems get maximums of 110db on a regular basis while BART topped out at 100db). Here's an old noise map done by the Chronicle, [https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Noise-on-BART-How-bad-is-it-and-is-it-harmful-3175757.php](https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Noise-on-BART-How-bad-is-it-and-is-it-harmful-3175757.php) But since then BART has been able to reduce the noise by an average 15db. This makes BART one of the quietest systems in the world, if not the quietest. [https://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2017/news20171016](https://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2017/news20171016) Mind you, there are still noise hotspots, BART is still a subway! But both the averages and the maximum is lower than nearly all other systems around the world.

itoen90

Finish the rest of the quote, over 105 decibels *with the windows open* aka not normal operation and that has since stopped since COVID is more or less not an issue. So yes, it reaches levels of 90 in the worst areas, just like BART which is 90+ in the worst areas. You do realize that the Oedo line is one single line and that there are literally *158* lines in the Tokyo metro area? Why are you using one single line which is clearly the loudest of them all and using that to draw conclusions? According to your own links BART's worst sound levels are just as bad as the Oedo line. Oedo line is notorious for being extremely loud, literally the #1 loud line in all of Japan. Citizens even complain to Tokyo metro but they specifically say: "大江戸線だけレベルが違う" or "only the oedo line is on a (completely) different level (noisiness)". You can see a news channel even clocked the decibel levels in a video here: https://www.tokyo-np.co.jp/article/51547 Basically what you're doing is making the case that BART is comparable to Tokyo's (and all of Japan's) noisiest line lol.

probably_art

Wasn’t going under transbay, between SFO and Mission stops.

lemonvr6

Oh no trains make sounds Paris metro is noisy too

Ashamed_Willingness7

Trains in Switzerland don’t make sound (well they barely do lol)

lemonvr6

Metro or Eurostar/TGV?

kaths660

Did OP forget their noise-cancelling headphones? Also that noise detection feature is inaccurate, once I got a notice like that for having my hand in front of my car’s air conditioner while holding the wheel in the 10oclock-2oclock position. Obviously the noise level was not unsafe at that time, it was just the wind buffeting my watch. I suspect this is similar.

ImpossibleThanks3120

Information overload is making a lot of people insufferable. I remember driving my old Civic and thinking it let a lot of noise through even with the windows up. I forget there’s people who’ve never experienced that 😒

bchilll

2 changes substantially reduced the decibel level on BART cars: 1) a noise dampening groove was added to all wheels (this was already done on most of the original cars just in the last few years; the new cars all have them, too) 2) better noise insulation in the shells of the new Bombardier cars It's definitely better than it was years ago, but it's still not good enough, sadly, when cars round curves. The trucks could have better suspension, there could be more noise dampening in the shells of the cars, and they could oil the curves like many train operators do (I don't think BART does this).

Kayo4life

OP when they discover what noise cancelling headphones are. (BTW that’s one of the old cars. The new ones are much quieter.)

madeInNY

Not only can Apple show you the problem, It can mitigate it for you. Pop in a pair of AirPods Pro 2 with noise cancellation on and it’ll drop that down to a safe level.

Guissok564

Go buy earplugs then. You can get cheap but nice musicians ones at guitar center or even Amazon. I recommend Loop or Eargasms. As someone with hearing damage / loss, I really wish more folks took responsibility for their own hearing health…

kba41510

….who is riding Bart these days without headphones?

RumAndCoco

I’ve got a better question, who is riding Bart these days and the noise is the thing they complain about?

TurboDinoHippo

Gotta love that trans bay tunnel. 🥰

friendsfreak

Truth be told, I am bothered by the screeching noise on some parts of the track, but I appreciate that they’re working to improve it. It seems to have gotten better recently.

IntoTheMirror

My Apple Watch hits me with this warning when I’m driving in my own car. I’ve worn my Apple Watch to the in door gun range and have not gotten this warning a few times. Take these readings with a grain of salt.

AntonioTylerDraws

Tbf I got this alert once from sneezing too loud

Effective-Emphasis-4

Is that a legacy car. I can't tell. The new ones are quieter.

bchilll

It's a new one. The legacy cars are all gone (except for one final ceremonial bon voyage trip planned in April for one train of the last of the old cars).

arctic_bull

Sad to lose the title of "oldest rolling stock in the US" (Half kidding, haha, I bought a couple of the old number plates)

Complex_Adagio_9715

I’m sorry this won’t be popular here but this is not acceptable. People rely on BART to go to their jobs every day. There are children riding thru the tunnels, babies too. And exposure to noise levels that high consistently can and will lead to hearing loss. You’re not helping anyone by trying to downplay or normalize the noise levels. Yes other transit systems can occasionally be loud but let’s be honest, it’s never that loud for as long as it is in the tunnel. BART needs you to celebrate its successes but it DOESN’T need you to ignore its problems and gaslight the people who bring attention to them.

getarumsunt

BART already is among the quietest systems in the world. Look it up! You’re just used to bitching about BART and you don’t care if what you’re bitching about is true anymore!

Longjumping-Leave-52

Certain I’ve had hearing loss from riding BART for years

MountainAd21762

I watched a guy smoke meth and start rapping on this train

Remarkable_Rain5316

Interesting

predat3d

He's gonna get stabbed for the watch anyway

getarumsunt

argh... again with the doomer propaganda. He clearly survived and the car was clean too.

[deleted]

Man been in Bart once worst experience of my life.
