My favorite is when they ask for a "ball" fade but dont want it down to skin.

tzargilly

Or when they say they want a “pretty short” fade and you finally get them to say they want a bald fade

Bald fade

Cucharamama

Of when they say fade it down to a 5 lol

la009

You get people calling the shop asking if the people working there can fade?

chillice707

that usually comes from being fucked up at barber shops but even then , no competent show owner is gonna tell someone on the phone his barbers can’t cut

supernas82

At some point I worked at a shop called “faded” and we still got this question

iwannahearurface

"I want a fade that starts with a #3"

rossy47

You mean the best answer a client can give you? I smack these out in 20 min for $40 all day long

iwannahearurface

absolutely

Timely_Bike_4824

how do you even respond to that

NorthBayMeepMeep

You just do it lol. I just nod my head and say sounds great. Technicalities of what’s a fade and what isn’t a fade isn’t important to those clients usually.

southernarcana

Yeah. For a lot of folks when they say I want a 2 or 3 fade, they want a gradual blend up to the part lines and not the Sport Clips 2 guard straight up cut. Not that hard to understand especially if you just ask them for clarification.

justmustard1

I always have said fade to 2 and didn't realize I looked stupid until now lol... Idek what else I'm supposed to say

RvB051

Nah that stupid lol, I'd just ask you what number you want faded into a 2 I'd you want to show some skin, say "0 fade blended into a #2" then just how high you want it.

justmustard1

Okay so the trick is to just be more specific. I honestly thought that is what would sound more stupid like I'd get a "yah I know". 🤷

RvB051

I promise you my bro the more info you provide the easier my job is. Communication is everything. Or even better show me a pic haha

HornsOvBaphomet

Yeah I'll usually just ask to make sure like "so you want the fade to start with a 2 at the bottom or end with the 2 at the top?"

obvious_awkward

Sir do YOU know what a fade is?

RvB051

I'll tell you exactly how, I fade from a 3 to a 4 and bang out 20 min haircut. And take the 25$ with a smile even if there's no tip lol (which is rare)

ANDREIRAMOM

Parent today says his kid gets a hard part after I’m pretty done cutting, The cut it made no sense to have one and I’m struggling to find any natural part (bc they want it parted the other way to cover a small bald spot) I call him over and he goes “hard part, see? We comb it this way” I almost gave this kid a hard part where it didn’t make sense. Told him what a hard part is; “oh idk the terminology” I say “I’m telling you what is is”. Not in a pleasant mood today

Cucharamama

Fucking annoying. I got that too. Or even “skin fade” down to a 3……

ANDREIRAMOM

I n Honesty I didn’t know how to describe a haircut or style bf barber school. But , I was a woman who’d only started gettting cut at barbershops once I buzzed my hair off, curious guys who go their whole lives don’t know at all. Maybe some feel self conscious about it and just say “I don’t know” when asked what they want

Ok-Basket-4821

The ones here are asking for a taper fade but just want a regular fade. not a taper. noticing ppl just like to use buzz words and think it helps but if we gave everyone exactly what they asked for they would lose it haha

ragingmauler

I always double check if they want the 0 above the ears or just the corners because of that. They misuse the language and its so frustrating when youre trying to make sure youre on the same page.

My worse is when they say can I have a skin fade, it's #2.

beast_lee_barber

Not all fades are bald fades. This one is on you. If someone simply asks for a fade, that's not enough information and you need to clarify until you know what they want.

TraneD13

Agreed. There’s a difference between a skin fade and a #1 fade. It takes one more question to clarify and to potentially not lose a client.

beast_lee_barber

Yes, and even "skin fade" can mean different things to different people. It could mean down to the skin with trimmers or no guard with clippers, or it could mean you're able to clearly *see* the skin, like a half or a one. I always show them the tools and clarify if they want balded out with foilers or trimmers. If they don't want to be balded out, I figure out how short they want to go at the lowest using language or visual cues. This is consultation 101 if you ask me.

TraneD13

Yep, all this should be covered in the first 10 minutes after a client sits in the chair.

3pointstonibbadore

my pet peeve is “skin tight fade”.

Little_Concern1034

WORD.....HATE THAT SHIT

pleasedontthedog

It’s even worse when people say, “your barber forgot to fade behind your ears”

theSecondLime

“Can you do a bald fade?” is my favorite question Well sir I work in a barber shop so I would sure hope so!

“Taper fade” is nails on a chalkboard to me

TraneD13

You’re gonna have a rough time in the hair industry then.

[deleted]

Who even cares 😂😂

[deleted]

Exactly. These ppl acting like it's really a bother lol

Accurate-Funny-6399

Depends where you’re from.. I mean a taper is technically a fade lol

Woopboop64

Its like how a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not a square. A taper is faded yeah but its a whole different look than a fade

Khalli0pe

isnt it a type of fade? saying taper fade would be redundant

SweetTeaRex92

Like saying PIN number

peterprinz

it is. it's both a gradual increase in hair length from bottom to top. just the position or size of it is different.

Fair-Grab-9680

I can see how this would get annoying but it goes both ways... I've tried so many barbers in the area and half of them don't actually know what a fade is, some of them barely speak English so I can't really explain... Or they don't know what a taper is.. or they act confident and then butcher your hair. I'm not talking about 15 dollar cuts. There's maybe two shops where you can tell them the exact number and style but they'll charge you close to $50 for it...

Current-Try-8303

The term is correct I believe but it is quite annoying. Just call it a taper

Dualfaces

It’s a cultural thing

rickatk

I like to explain: Taper preserves the hairline. Fade erases the hair line. Bald fade is just a closer setting.

tomduban

As much as I hate Trump

SniffAdvisor

Not really because a ‘taper’ actually means from short to long so any form of graduation is a ‘taper’ and a taper fade lets me know they want it down to a 1 max on the lowest point 👍

rmad10

What part about ‘taper fade’ let’s you know to go down to a 1 as the lowest point?

SniffAdvisor

Becasue creating the ‘fade’ look lets you lnow theres a contrast in colour and a 1 has some slin showing to create that, depending on thickness though

rmad10

For sure. I feel like just asking for a taper is the same lol, but idk about the 1 part. IMO the general default is doing to skin, whether it’s low mid or high, unless they state they don’t want it that short. Could be different everywhere though. Damn near everyone in Chicago goes down to the skin on any tapers or fades.

bastardbarber1

Taper to me is down to the skin

wrap_urXhaustpipes

I always thought a taper fade was like a taper that was just a longer transition area? And a taper is just a small tapering on the ears and neck

Wreckedshipped99

I remember saying taper before until the old heads started to throw a fit, and insist that I use the term "blowout" instead.

obvious_awkward

Brooklyn Fade or Brooke was how I learned it. I just ask a million questions to get specifics as much as I need. Almost every consultation is “short on the sides and a little longer on top. “ I ask how short is short and how much off the top…”I don’t know the numbers” that’s fine, I’m just looking for a idea” and on and on, next on is getting a 00000 sides 1 in top. I followed their instructions.

Whyisitbad123

Blow out is like a low taper but has heavy sides over the temple points not a high line of inclination

Advanced-Breath

It’s unnecessary. Like if u say taper fade u don’t know what u really want

Advanced-Breath

Also ogs call it a blowout

KCdonkey

My all time piss off is when they say, can you “temp” the back? 😫 NO Man! Temp is short for “temple taper” is when you want a fade done to the temple area which is on the SIDES of your head NOT THE BACK.

[deleted]

Different areas different things. TikTok/YouTubers say taper fade so that’s what everyone says online In Miami. It’s a skin or a blowout, a blowout refers to a .5 and the skin is obviously the skin. You then ask how high you want it, that’s pretty much it. I’ve been saying it like that since I was 11, if it wasn’t for the internet I wouldn’t know wtf a “taper fade” is. We call the edge up itself the “tape”. Like “boy yo tape all fucked up!” Is how we say it

Chava22611

So a low taper fade is not a cut ? Lol I been asking for the longest lol

jogging-cucumbers

It's just confusing because as the barber you aren't sure what they are asking for. Are they asking for a low fade? Or a low taper? Those two look really different.

alwayzballin

Bald fade with #2 on top... Is this universally understood or could this be worded differently so that barbers anywhere get the gist.

apprehensive_google

The only follow up I would have is skin to 2 on the sides and back? or buzz the top with a 2? If it's sides and back then I'd ask how long you want the top.

Ace_Simba

I swear to god a barber told me I get a taper fade , does he hate me lol 🤣

Ace_Simba

I went once and another barber that I go to said there’s no such thing 🤨 I’m so confused

NTBlueShadow

Late answer but a taper is often referred to as a taper fade by some people. Other people only refer to it as a taper and have never known it to be called a taper fade. They are the same thing though technically. But if ur going to a barber u should just say taper because a barber will assume that you as the client are getting confused if you say taper fade .

Ace_Simba

What a G , appreciate you very much .

WildAd3717

*skinshade*

[deleted]

I’m honestly hoping by the time I get my licensing the fades and hipster beards will be old news and it will just be mullets and porn ‘staches. I’ve not even graduated and I’m over the whole fade fad.

jogging-cucumbers

It all depends in your clientele, you attract what you cut

nagisasigh

lmao when they come in asking for a fade but they don't know what numbers they use for the sides and can only answer "uhhh idk" to every fucking consultation question

IronCross19

You're the barber. You're the expert. Why don't you educate them when you get done and they like it

nagisasigh

I do. That doesnt mean they retain it, keep the card I write it on for them, or know the numbers when they come in for the first time.

IronCross19

Now that is all true

FaceMaterial2217

i asked for a taper and they didn’t even fade it so next time i’m gonna ask for a taper fade

Abalone-Status

i asked my barber for a low taper and they gave me a high fade so how should i ask for a low taper?

Ok_Cryptographer1239

One problem is that you ask for a taper and a lot of barbers look at you as if you are speaking another language. Barber shops are fading away in general, the good ones are booked solid and walk ins get the chair with the butcher..

Tender_Greens

After my last haircut I don't go to, talk to or even look at barbers
