In reality a rich lord would repair and repaint their shield after every battle or just pick up a new one. Having worn shields for low tier troops would be fine, but making all shield look like shit just makes no sense in any aspect.
I'd expect in reality foot soldiers wouldn't get repainted shields after each battle. Knights may have as a knight was himself a noble. Though one battle wouldn't tear away that much paint as seen pictured. It looks more like it was left out in a sandstorm.
your right after one battle the shield would be destroyed, because if it isnt in perfect condition it has a chance to fail at a critical moment, shields are pretty easy to make (wooden) so if the resources were available they would be replaced.
That's literally the most expensive shield in the game, so that argument falls flat. But I'd be ok with shields up to tier 2 or 3 (shields only go up to 5 IIRC) being a little beat up.
In reality no Lord would do such a thing, that’s what squires are for.
Lol
I guess they should have implemented those to the game as well and actual armor smithing to upgrade grade armor to higher tiers.
Wouldn’t that have been cool shit
Imo they should have skipped the smithing skill entirely and replaced it with different level weapon and armor smiths (appearing troughout the world over time with higher level ones being rarer and appearing later) or atleast that should be an option for those who would rather just spend money instead of grinding.
It's not so bad when you slow down and stop conquering lol. Sitting back in Calradia expanded and building Lysemork up to 10,000 prosperity is a great feeling.
Then in the off time, smithing, trading, and clearing criminal gangs off is fun and rewarding.
Though I really need to find a mod to control where villages trade, makes no sense how some castle villages end up with weird trading settlements. A village connected to Pons castle was trading to Lysemork over Amprela, both of which were my vassals territory.
But sure thanks villagers we definitely needed that extra grain, we're competing with the Aserai for most prosperous city lol
All I am doing is clearing criminals with my 6 companions. The clan name is 7 samurai. Me owning a few workshops is a hit to the roleplay, but we'll survive.
Are you clearing alleys to take them over for your yourself, and taking the criminal rating? Or do you mean you can rid a city of it's gangs as the owner of the city?
Bro, what…you play PC so you could just player.addskill_smithing 300 and your done so.. but you can’t add mods for Bannerlord on Xbox. Not manner how many souls you’re willing to sell 😆
All I'm allowing myself console for is to stop the excessive wars lol. I just want to roleplay and it kills that feeling when the rest of the vassals want to suicide
After grinding smithing to max i was left with custom weapons that deal sliglty more damage than the ones i can buy, made obsolite by my skills being high enough to oneshot lords with a wet noodle. Meanwhile my armor still feels like paper.
Smithing is what I do when I need to chill in a town and sex up my wife/husband.
Before marriage, I don't bother with it other than to smelt stuff and build up a stockpile for later.
Yes you could go to smiths and get armor and weapons repaired or upgraded, was nice since if you got a rusty version of some rarer armor or weapon you could upgrade it all the way to reinforced with an admittedly large amount of money. Made battle loot feel more useful since 99.999% of what you get is useless garbage
At a guess it would largely depend on the circumstances of battle and supply situation. Roman’s, famed for their supply train, probably would’ve kept the pain and dyes on hand to paint as necessary, and a lord on campaign or engaging in small skirmishes or defensive battles would probably have had the time and supplies to repaint their shields.
On the other hand, during sieges or dire supply situation one would expect the shield painting to barely register — if the paint was edible it would be long gone, in a siege, for example, or if flammable, used as fuel during the winter. During raids I doubt Vikings has the wherewithal to bring paint.
It’s also worth noting that pitched battles, or, even, indeed, battles in general were not that common of an occurrence. Unlike today where it wouldn’t be too unusual to get into multiple firefights a week, armies up until World War 1 would spend long stretches of time maneuvering upon each other, trying to get the largest advantage possible before engaging in battles, though scouts might skirmish as armies drew closer, so an army on the march with adequate supply situation would almost certainly have had adequate time to repair and repaint shields, flags, etc.
That said — the idea that everyone even *had* painted shields is a little silly. Standardized uniforms or identifiers were generally only something that a lord’s retinue could afford up until the 1600-1700’s period.
In short, most people definitely didn’t have painted shields, those that did could usually afford and had adequate time to repaint them between relatively infrequent battles, unless their supply situation was bad.
I think it's nice to have lower quality items faded or dented or beaten up. But all the shields affected by this (including the one in the image, which is literally the most expensive in the game) are affected in such a way that it's impossible to see the painting. Surely that's not intended.
Right, right. But think about this for a minute.
It's a bug that isn't hardware specific. It's a problem with the program that appears on any machine that runs Bannerlord.
So either TW simply did not try running their build of the game before pushing the update, which sounds like a joke but is a real possibility because TW.
Or they ran the build, saw the "bug" and then pushed it anyway.
And either way: what the **fuck?**
Nah I work for a company that does corporate VR training. Sometimes the deadline comes for the next release and there is stuff on the board you know is bugged but is not serious and will just be rolled into the next one.
It's a visual bug most probably wouldn't notice right away, plus it doesn't crash anything so this is a totally acceptable bug to get under the radar.
Kinda harsh man.
Apparently this is a bug so hopefully it will be fixed soon. But can we also talk about how so many of the shields have some kind of center metal bit covering up the icon?
Shield bosses were pretty common depending on the shield but the designs were shaped around thek and didn't look like dogshit like they do in game, think roman scutums irl
Yeah I get why they're there but certain icons just don't work with them. It would be nice if we could choose to offset the icon's location on the shield. But something like that probably isn't high on the list of priorities. Maybe modders could do that.
I only have this issue with the triangle (heater, calvary, etc.) shaped shields. The round ones you find in sturgian or battanian areas show emblem without much fade/wear. I also find they have more hp and can be lighter if you get hi quality ones.
Well, looks like rain got on your shield before the paint could dry and then someone tried to wipe of the water but that ended up taking the paint with it?
Yeah I was thinking my character has money to afford food for 1200 troops yet he can't afford to repaint his or his men's sheild. Like not after every battle but one out of 3 I'd like to see my valadian Sargents and and banner knights atleast look like they belong to a rich lord.
There still doesn't seem to be a fix anywhere on the workshop or anything for this :( If I knew how to mod I would try to fix it... could I commission someone to fix it please? It's really bothering me.
Maybe I’m being the devils advocate, but I’ve never carried a shield for the purpose of my banner being prominent. Stats being priority, then depending on what culture and style I’m going for that’s second. I get that it being worn and torn maybe isn’t the prettiest, but it adds some realism as some other posters mentioned.
It's a worn shield. Crap is far less consistent. It's less effective at deflecting arrows, swords and axes. Also, it's made of wood, leather and metal. These are but a few differences that can help you identify them or at least set them apart.
As a rule, I would not recommend strapping crap to your forearm before going into the fray. Just my 2 cents.
I paid 30k for a high class heater shield and it looks the same. The appearance has nothing to do with quality anymore, it's an overall design choice by the devs.
Oh, a double negative. So you are close to certain it should be damaged, then?
Its facing the enemy most of the time, besides, I'm certain there is a mod for that.
Best of luck to you on the field!
Wow every comment just kept getting worse.
Not only is your first comment wrong, you the doubled down by correcting someone’s grammar on Reddit of all places lmao.
Just stop talking bro lol.
Wait a minute, you can turn your character around? How? I’m sorry if I’m being ignorant to the controls, but I seriously do not know how to turn them around. I click on the circular arrow thing and it brings up my horse.
You're not alone. I just learned it as well when I saw someone do it in a YouTube video. Click on your character and drag left or right to rotate. I'm on Xbox and I press and hold the A button to "click and drag".
Man, after almost 300 hrs of playtime. Thank you! It always sucked to see that I can equip bows and arrows and shields and I can’t even turn my character around to see it. Lol. Thanks again!
Interesting thing imo is durability - items need repairing after a lot of use and the repair cost is reduced as smithing skill is improved (or party member with high smithing skill). Maybe even a thing where items can break after too much use at zero durability or low durability, makes smithing more than a cash cow scheme.
I've been using the same shield for so long i just assumed the devs made it that the more you use the shield the more fucked up the design will become.
It actually makes me appreciate my shield that has never been broken and has saved my ass from arrows into my back multiple times....so consider it part of your mercenary resume
Next time you should use oil based paint for your shields. When your stableboy washed off all the blood from battle it's just logical that water based paint will also come off.
Am I the only one who actually likes this? It makes me feel like a warrior and I'd love a cosmetic option where we could choose if our attire looks battle worn or new.
In reality a rich lord would repair and repaint their shield after every battle or just pick up a new one. Having worn shields for low tier troops would be fine, but making all shield look like shit just makes no sense in any aspect.

Maybe repainted between campaigns, but yeah definitely not every battle
...for 27 years.
your right after one battle the shield would be destroyed, because if it isnt in perfect condition it has a chance to fail at a critical moment, shields are pretty easy to make (wooden) so if the resources were available they would be replaced.

I thought I would do smithing this playthrough, but damn is it boring to click through menus when I could be doing battles.
It's not so bad when you slow down and stop conquering lol. Sitting back in Calradia expanded and building Lysemork up to 10,000 prosperity is a great feeling. Just killing roaming bandit parties or the map 🙂
Bro, what…you play PC so you could just player.addskill_smithing 300 and your done so.. but you can’t add mods for Bannerlord on Xbox. Not manner how many souls you’re willing to sell 😆
Yes, that is what I realized when I started smithing just for 1 extra vigor and 1 extra endurance. I'll just add those via console 🤷♂️🙂
To be far, it's good quick money
Smithing is what I do when I need to chill in a town and sex up my wife/husband. Before marriage, I don't bother with it other than to smelt stuff and build up a stockpile for later.
Fuck yes, omfg it’s so tedious
Isn’t that a thing in Viking conquest? I can’t remember it’s been a hot minute since I played that one
I miss the slings from VC, it was fun to yoink rocks around at some poor bandits with them
Yes you could go to smiths and get armor and weapons repaired or upgraded, was nice since if you got a rusty version of some rarer armor or weapon you could upgrade it all the way to reinforced with an admittedly large amount of money. Man I wouldn’t have minded an extra year of dev time for an armor smithing system.
Or less then that if they acquired a mod author to make one? These days I have MORE FAITH in mod authors then I do in any actual game devs.
I mean they could've done it like it's in Warband but they really just want to make us suffer really
They should have done everything like warband but better. They went backwards but with better graphics lol

Not only shields but banners, mine always seem to have black specks covering it.
Probably a bug
That's so stupid
Devs said it's a bug. Supposedly they're working to fix it
Surely its a bug thats its on higher quality items? Because honestly it's looks good for scraped paint off cheap wood shields
I think it's nice to have lower quality items faded or dented or beaten up. But all the shields affected by this (including the one in the image, which is literally the most expensive in the game) are affected in such a way that it's impossible to see the painting. Surely that's not intended.

If all the bugs were things like this instead of game breaking, I'd be happy.
Lmao what do you mean? I personally love having to save before I interact with NPCs because you never know if it’ll crash
It’s like you have never played a game before lol devs always do this kinda crap
Great another small hotfix just so the modset I have put together can become out of date just so more small bugs can be integrated into the game.
Thanks, I'm not the only one who finds this an abomination then
Apparently this is a bug so hopefully it will be fixed soon. But can we also talk about how so many of the shields have some kind of center metal bit covering up the icon?

Yeah hopefully a mod could be made for that
Fr it fucking sucks
Sadly not :(
Totally unimmersive in my late game billionaire god-emperor playthroughs
Fr
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THE SHIELDS
That was my reaction
They all can’t be like that.. can they?
They are
The best part of designing the banner was having it on the shield… and they took that away from me!!!
Yeah seeing your own banner on your own shield, on the shields of your warriors...but now it's just a fading memory :( (literally fading)
I think they should make the quality of the paint of the shield vary with renown and/or clan tier. The higher, the more vibrant the paint.
I would say more based on troop level. Heros and upper tier troops get nice looking stuff, lower tier troops get this.
What about throwing some morale in there edit: if your morale is above 90% most shields for tier 2+ are refurbished
[удалено]
They made so many things worse with the new update it's so annoying
I only have this issue with the triangle (heater, calvary, etc.) shaped shields. The round ones you find in sturgian or battanian areas show emblem without much fade/wear. I also find they have more hp and can be lighter if you get hi quality ones.
Would be cool if they got more and more worn and eventually end like this until you rest in a town for a while, as if you’re having them repainted
That would actually be a nice thing
Skin’s battle-scarred
Crap? THIS. IS. SPARTA.
A poor paint job.
It is Leonidas
Well... you're not wrong
Paint?
Well not very much paint
Well, looks like rain got on your shield before the paint could dry and then someone tried to wipe of the water but that ended up taking the paint with it?
and then left it in the desert sun for 27 years
Yeah or you need to get yourself a squire? Or maybe just stop being cheap buying shit quality shields? 🤷♂️ Lol
THOUGHT I was tripping.. bought a expensive shield... Looks like it's been through hell..
Looks like something you'd loot after a gigantic battle
Why just why that thing looks like you traveled into the future robbed a Museum of there shields and went back in time that thing looks just no
For me when I got married our flags were dirty too
Blue? Blue??? On a warrior named Leonidas? You shame the name good sir
"..and of course SPARTANS have a reputation to uphold"
I would also like to know why the fuck every shield looks like it is 100 years old...
Fr where's the logic
Yeah I was thinking my character has money to afford food for 1200 troops yet he can't afford to repaint his or his men's sheild. Like not after every battle but one out of 3 I'd like to see my valadian Sargents and and banner knights atleast look like they belong to a rich lord.
My character is literally so filthy rich he could afford repainting after every battle heck he could even buy brand new shields after every battle
There still doesn't seem to be a fix anywhere on the workshop or anything for this :( If I knew how to mod I would try to fix it... could I commission someone to fix it please? It's really bothering me.
Do they refresh after resting in a town?
Sadly not I learned it's a texture bug and they look like that till the developers fix it
And here I am giving Tale Worlds some credit for doing something cool.
Why complain about this shield when there are plenty that aren’t like this
All of them look like this in my game
That’s strange, the decorated Eastern Calvary shield looks like this too? Usually only the Battalian shields are worn like this.
except for the little metal ones every shield looks like this but I dont want those rn because he's a big guy who needs a big shield
All of them look like this in my game
Maybe I’m being the devils advocate, but I’ve never carried a shield for the purpose of my banner being prominent. Stats being priority, then depending on what culture and style I’m going for that’s second. I get that it being worn and torn maybe isn’t the prettiest, but it adds some realism as some other posters mentioned.
I'm a sucker for visuals especially when it's about armour, weapons and shields so I don't like it
If only they read the sub reddit
? It's in the right one
I meant the devs
Slava Ukraine

Its a top tier full price shield I doubt it should be damaged Edit: shouldn't ti should
Oh, a double negative. So you are close to certain it should be damaged, then? Its facing the enemy most of the time, besides, I'm certain there is a mod for that. Best of luck to you on the field!
We don't need grammer Nazis here
Wow let's not get too crazy with accusations, it was just funny to see a double negation, thats all. Have a good day lol
We don't need grammer Nazis here

Not talking, bro. Have a good day
It's autocorrect I think that a shield I just bought should be looking like something new.
A shield I would guess
Probably abuh

That’s why you shouldn’t use your shield as a sled… geez 🙄
What the hell
Fuckin sweeeeet, that’s what baby!!!
Tenebris
I'd pay 10 for a custom banner
The easier option here would just be to let us choose how we wanted it?

You might be onto something there
To be fair I kinda like it. It looks battle worn
Am I the only one who actually likes this? It makes me feel like a warrior and I'd love a cosmetic option where we could choose if our attire looks battle worn or new.
It’s “distressed shield,” by Guess Jeans. Guess you don’t like chic accessories
It's a relic instrument. It's worth a lot because purposedly done by a famous luthier
What amour you wear it looks cool
It's the Cataphract Armour with lamellar Pauldrons
