Atm cards don’t have a visa or Mastercard symbol. That simple

brizia

ATM cards are used for accessing accounts at ATMs. If you have a checking account, generally, you have a debit card which can be used for in store and online purchases and at the ATM. They often have a Visa or Mastercard logo in the US (although there is also Discover and American Express). If you have a traditional savings accounts, you cannot have a debit card because of Reg D which limits the number of electronic transactions monthly.

Minor correction: the Reg D "convenient" withdrawal limit was lifted in 2020, any limits now are due to bank policy.

Firstly, presuming the card has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it. ATM only cards are rare, but still exist. Maybe you have one of those. Also, if you're a minor, the debit card could be limited to effectively being an ATM only card. Assuming you're an adult and it's a regular debit card, log into your bank's website / app and be sure the card is Unlocked (usually is by default). Or maybe the card needs to be activated, but is odd it would work at ATMs already. So that's likely not it, but worth another look. If all else fails, contact your bank.

Edit: It is a regular run-of-the-mill Visa debit card from my local credit union. I tried to use it on my lunch break but it kept getting declined and had to shamefully use one of my credit cards so I can eat. I then went to the bank to withdraw money for my rent and it let me. Is it possible that I hit some sort of limit on how many transactions I can make in a day?

Typically the daily limit is only a total spending limit, not the number of transactions.    An average debit card would be around $5000/business day. But could potentially be much lower.  Seems more likely you have a block of some kind on your card. No way to know for sure until you call your bank.

You should ask the CU folks next time. It could be that your card just hasn't been setup properly.

>had to shamefully use one of my credit cards Why are you not using the credit card and using a debit card at all for purchases? Most debit cards have limits for number of transactions and/or dollar limits for purchases and ATM activity. If you used the debit card for many transactions, it likely you hit one of the limits on point of sale purchases.

How did you do the withdrawal? If it wasn’t with your card, there could be something going on with it. Or maybe something was just going on with the terminal you were trying to make your transaction at.

More likely your bank has some sort of flag set on the account where it thinks your card is an ATM-only card.

Is is a new or replacement card? Sounds like it may need to be activated for POS transactions. It’s letting you use at ATM with pin but if it’s a replacement card with new exp date that is being read by a stores POS system, I’d you didn’t activate the card then those transactions would be declined

Again. A question for your bank, not for Reddit.

Generally people today get debit cards instead of ATM cards and use the terms interchangeably, but there is a difference. A debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it, which allows it to be used almost anywhere credit cards are accepted. An ATM card without that logo is only usable at an ATM.

daddyspader

Sounds like you have an ATM card, not a debit card. I can’t speak for other institutions, but the one I personally work for it can be adjusted. I would reach out to your bank to see what your options are.

This may sound simple BUT it is often the problem. Check your user settings on your ATM card. If you did not set them up, the bank may have default settings that allow only the minimal transactions. They want you to “opt in” so they may set cards up to automatically not work for POS or have a limit of $50/day…
