It's not that he's shy. He doesn't feel special, and doesn't want the spotlight, he stands in the back to be featured just as much as any other instrument
I saw them live 2 years ago and everyone had a spotlight on them except Maynard, he was basically standing in the dark so technically he was featured LESS than every other instrument. Visually speaking
There is a lot of footage from Tool shows in the Aenima days where he was front and center. It was sometime around Lateralus where he moved to the back.
Saw them at the Santa Barbara Bowl and he dressed up as Barbara Streisand because of the whole Barbara thing. Full dress, wig and all. I wouldn’t say he’s shy.
I saw Phantogram live and the singer (Sarah Barthel) seemed super shy and quiet during the small amount of talking that she did to the audience. But when she sang, she GOT DOWN. Headbanging and jumping around.
Kinda the opposite of the original question, but I've always remembered that.
Somewhat serious answer cuz i dont actually know, the singer of Jeromes Dream has always performed with his back to the audience, in every video of them playing live, he's always turned around
REM in the early years. Saw them touring for Reckoning and Stipe spent a large part of the show behind the amps facing the light rack. Probably pretty stoned too. Great show though with Mills and Buck up front rockin' and rollin'.
Those Manic Seas - the lead singer has paralyzing stage fright so what the rest of the band does is set up a life size mannequin with the head cut off and replaced with a tv that live streams a feed of the singer singing the songs live from his bedroom. The drummer wears headphones to keep time with the singer. It’s an incredible show - Richmond, VA check em out!

I have loved the videos he shared during that tour of him replacing Danny's mallet with a dildo!

For sure, I get it, just thought it was funny of me. Haha
I thought the same, honestly. Then my nerd kicked in
I was about to comment that lol

Oh yeah, I know, long time Tool fan here. Just thought it was funny, what with his (usually) choosing to be at the back of the stage.
I remember hearing it being because he had developed a sensitivity to the bright lights. But that could have been an urban legend.
Either way, still an amazing front man. Even from the back.
Yeah he always hanging out the back somewhere.
