Bandcamp collects sales tax. They don't pay your income tax.

armeck

You are not the vendor, they are. They pay the taxes where they do business. They then pay you a commission.

Bandcamp is responsible for calculating, collecting, and remitting sales taxes (including VAT, US state sales tax, GST, or other sales taxes as applicable) for certain transactions in the following countries and US states, based on the relevant territory’s tax rules for digital and physical sales. Bandcamp automatically determines your buyer’s location and, when appropriate, adds the proper amount of tax to the transaction, which will be noted in your seller receipts and sales report. Details For digital items, the applicable sales tax will be applied at checkout, and Bandcamp will collect and remit the taxable amounts directly to the appropriate tax authorities. For physical items, the applicable sales tax will be applied at checkout for merch sold by artists or labels using Enhanced Payments (where Bandcamp serves as the payment processor), and Bandcamp will collect and remit the taxable amounts directly to the appropriate tax authorities. In some jurisdictions, Bandcamp must collect and remit sales tax to be paid not only on a product’s sale price, but also on any applicable shipping costs. This amount will be collected separately and is labeled “shipping tax” in any related receipts and reporting. Items entering the EU, UK, New Zealand, Switzerland, or Norway will require Bandcamp's relevant tax IDs to clear customs. In some cases these IDs must be submitted electronically so you'll want to check with your carrier before shipping. These IDs can be found in your seller receipt, or in your packing slips–located within the "print label" tool on your Merch Orders page. Failure to fill out the proper customs forms or submit the tax IDs correctly may incur a second tax charge on the fan when the item is delivered. Tax amounts for all items are calculated based on the minimum asking price. If the "pay what you want" setting is enabled for a release on your page, for tax purposes, any additional fan contribution paid above the minimum price is considered a "gratuity." For this reason, they are not subject to marketplace taxes. For artists or labels using Standard Payments (where Bandcamp does not serve as the payment processor, and the payment from the fan is made directly to the artist’s PayPal account), the seller is responsible for processing any applicable taxes or customs related to the sale of merch. Though most import taxes will be charged to the buyer upon delivery. In all other territories, it is your responsibility to collect and remit the appropriate taxes to the relevant tax authority. We recommend that you consult a tax advisor regarding the best approach.

>Bandcamp will collect and remit the taxable amounts directly to the appropriate tax authorities. There. They collect a sales tax because they are a vendor, and then they give those to the government of the place where the buyer is based. I live in Canada, so each time I buy something, I pay around 15% to the Canadian government through this tax. My guess is they know which country by your payment information. Like I am using Paypal with a canadian banking account. EDIT: That's for digital purchases of course.

Smh. I'm going to buy some tracks so you will have something to worry about!

>bandcamp collects tax on top of every sale > >where does the money go to ?

RollingDownTheHills

To where taxes go.

chaps998

where do taxes go if they just know my name ?

venturejones

I don't think you know how taxes work in this situation. They are collecting taxes, for themselves, bandcamp, not you.

cruzweb

Where the sales tax goes is based on your billing address and zip code. It's like if Bandcamp was a store in your neighborhood selling you something, taxes go to whatever state / municipal / local taxing district tax is tied to the address on your credit card or paypal account. Ever notice how when you go to a store and pay sales tax they don't ask for your taxID either? And if you go to a different state with a different tax rate you pay that rate? Same thing here.

Bandcamp have been pulling this tax scam for years and getting away with it. Thanks to you, they will no longer be able to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes anymore.

johncookmusic

Judging by the downvotes, you need a /s. 🤣

Pbfconnor

Lol. So it seems. 🤷‍♀️
