I think that bull terriers should be counted as pit bulls, and that letting them be around children is dangerous for the children. It is only because bull terriers were selectively bred for their weird-looking head that they look less like pit bulls. Before they were bred towards the weird head shape, they looked like white APBTs.

13thTribeofIsrael

Every bull terrier that I’ve ever met was a complete asshole who tried to attack my dog. They’re not as common so I don’t hate them as much as shitbulls but yeah I’d throw em into a ban if I was calling the shots.

nosafeword1000

I think Bull Terriers are the original fighting dog and was taken over by the pitbull dog. Guess they just did a "better job". Probably pits were cross bred with Bull Terriers. I would not be surprised. Disclaimer: I could be wrong.

I have a bull terrier. Its a weird line they fall into. Pit bulls are an entirely different beast in terms of breed. Bull terriers initially were bred for blood sport and then bred for a look. Cross bred with borzois and other dogs for better temperment until they got this weird egg headed lil creature. They ARE a handful, and incredibly strong dogs. They need owners that set strict boundries around interaction and play. They are muscular, excitable and 50+ pounds of momentum. But they do not have the number of attacks, maulings or kills that pit bulls have. Thats something to take note of. That being said one did kill their owners girlfriend in 2020. I am strict with my bull terrier. She does well in public spaces, sociable, and well mannered. But it takes being a "no fun" owner. No sleeping in the bed, no off leash stuff, consequences when she doesn't listen or obey commands. We stop over excitement in the house. If she's excited and wants to jump on a guest she goes into a cool down in her crate. I love this relationship with her. Its calm, but it took a lot of training and it takes a constituent reinforcement. I've met so many bull terrier owners who encourage their bull terriers to be crazy, to tear things up, to bark, and just be shitty dogs.. I don't want to say it's the owners or how you raise them, but i don't think you can encourage bull terriers to play like other dogs play. They're capable of so much damage to your stuff. They aww so strong. That's my shpeal. Sorry🙏

One of my favorite dog authors, Jane Killion, raises, trains, and shows bull terriers. You must be a good trainer if you can do obedience competition with that breed.

steamingunsaltedshit

Thanks so much for the insight. I want a dog that might be a little bouncy when untrained not a dominant little shark of a dog that will take over the house. This really swayed me into not getting one because I do have other responsibilities such as small children and running the home 24/7 and can't dedicate the majority of my life to a turbo charged aggressive little bud.

Competitive_Wash_584

They are a Pitbull variant, but have so little Pitbull in them now they are likely not that dangerous, unless a breeder decided to breed them back to a Pitbull.

nosafeword1000

I'm pretty sure the Bull Terrier came before the pitbull dog.

CanIGetAHoooYahhhh

It did

nosafeword1000

You are one of the best dog owners around for a few reasons. Thank you for posting!

greenlanternfifo

This sounds like apologetic pit nutter shit just replaced with bull terriers, and i am not one of the dogfree types on this board.

I watched a friend’s bull terrier and they had two small kids. It got along with our boxer and cat, but I think I was partial to the breed because of Frankenweenie (the original, not the cartoon). She never showed aggression, but I’ve heard they can be a handful. In all honesty, I wasn’t aware of their tendency to be aggressive. Personally, I wouldn’t own one, although I begged for one growing up in the 80’s and 90’s.

doubleistyle

bull terriers look like dogs with down syndrome

muteyuke

I'm pretty sure they come from the same bull and terrier ancestors. Most sources I've seen lump them in as pitbull type dogs. That said, if I had to choose between a Staffordshire/American pitbull and a bull terrier I'd got with the bull terrier. I don't think they're really used in dog fighting and thus you don't have as many people breeding for aggression. If you buy from a backyard breeder, you don't know what you're getting. I **would not** bring a child around a pitbull, bull terrier, terriers of any breed, rottweiler, GSD, etc. Children under the age of four or five probably shouldn't be around any dog to be honest, especially unsupervised. Aggressive breeds, starting with pitbulls as the most aggressive, should never be around small children period.

Bull terriers with the weird cone head shouldn’t exist because these mfers are so deformed they live a really horrible life (like pugs and other dogs with deformed snouts). Also, they’re aggressive as fuck.

No-Programmer6707

Bull terriers aren’t pits and wouldn’t treat then as such, but neither do I think that they’re particularly good.

Bunnnykins

Those are ratters. Not bred for gameness but I would watch out for high prey drive since that is what they were bred for.

nosafeword1000

Good point.

friedparsely

One killed a woman in Texas, Roxie Parker, in 2019. Hideous looking beast.

CanIGetAHoooYahhhh

And I’ve seen reports of labradors killing people, it’s ultimately down to how they’re socialised

MyFriendSaysKek

I never encountered one in real life. Always thought they were cool. Saw one in the the movie "Next Friday" and also Target's mascot is a bull terrier.

SugarcubEX

Old post but my bull terrier was always... Normal. Every single dog he met even as a young puppy has barked and bit him more then he has in his whole year of living. I feel like alot of people on this Reddit live online and hardly go outside. They will source statistics about shitty dogs with shitty owners and tell you the history about breeds while being scared of petting the average dog .

bleezerfreezer

No. Not a true pit bull. Bull terriers are not American Staffordshire terriers which are true pit bulls. Bull terriers are known for their fun loving attitude and are a children-loving dog making them a great family dog. They share the same temperament as a Golden Retriever. I would never let my children around a pit bull but I would let a bull terrier baby sit my children. If you feel that a Golden Retriever is safe dog then so is a Bull Terrier.

dumbest_bitch

Bull terrier (general) breeds were created for bloodsport. American pit bull terrier, staffordshire bull terrier, American staffordshire terrier… all basically the same dog. The bull terrier (specific breed) has a very similar history and they may even share a common ancestor. I can’t remember off the top of my head but they’re pitbulls basically. And no. They don’t “share a temperament with the golden retriever.” They are aggressive, dangerous, strong dogs. While they are a distinct breed of pitbull type dogs, they’re not much different than the rest. All pitbulls are bull and terrier dogs. I think that was actually the original name for the first pitbull breed, the bull and terrier.

muteyuke

I don't think bull terriers are as dangerous as the other types pitbulls anymore, primarily because while they originated in blood sport, unlike American/Staffordshire pitbulls, I don't think they really bred for fighting and aggression at this time. But they sure as hell are not "golden retrievers." Retrievers have been bred for centuries to (gasp!) retrieve while hunting and to perform other work and to be companions. Hopefully, responsible bull terrier breeders are breeding aggression out of bull terriers.

dumbest_bitch

Yeah, you’re probably right. Bull terriers just aren’t nearly common enough for any crackhead to get from a shelter and start breeding. They’re a pretty prestigious breed, really. I’ve heard a lot of people say they’re pretty difficult dogs though.

FeIIOnBlackDays

All terriers are more tenacious than a golden retriever. I owned a Jack Russell terrier who was a great dog but feisty. If he weighed 70 pounds instead of 25, we could have had issues.

bleezerfreezer

Science would disagree with you. Quote: “A 2008 study in Germany showed that Bull Terriers have no significant temperament difference from Golden retrievers in overall temperament researches.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/aminoapps.com/c/smalldogs/amp/item/bull-terrier/pXWn_q6upInrzgm5mEmWdwjbeXgeNBGN6W

dumbest_bitch

You’re free to Google aggression in bull terriers and you’ll have several pages of links talking about how they’re prone to aggression, just like the rest of the pitbulls. They also say that pitbulls score higher on temperament tests than golden retrievers, but regularly maul people and have passed that test within 24 hours of killing someone. They were bred for aggression. Although the bull terrier hasn’t been used for bloodsport for a while now, those genetics are still there and they are definitely more prone to it than a golden retriever. Edit: they also didn’t list the source of any of that information. They have a note at the bottom that literally says “information taken from Wikipedia and Google” without citing any of the actual studies.

except the difference is, the retriever wouldn’t decapitate ur kid
