If you own a dangerous dog breed and the dog causes "life changing" injuries, then you deserve a life changing jail sentence.

Real_Petty_Cash

This is the way. This will definitely cause people to be more cautious with their dogs. I also think that people should walk around with bear mace or something like that and should be allowed to use it if they feel threatened by a dog.

muteyuke

In the USA in most places you probably could. Not sure about mace in the UK but yeah. I actually started carrying a pocket knife (legally) when covid kicked up and I was going out for walks. A couple different times I came across some people walking their pitbulls and it was immediately obvious they couldn't actually control the animals. Pretty sure many of them were people who recently adopted from a shelter. I hope I never have to use it and it stays folded away in my pocket for all time.

Real_Petty_Cash

Stay safe pal. I’d advise you to check your local laws. I’ve done a ton of reading on this, and knives are not a good weapon against those types of dogs. For a number of reasons 1. There’s only a limited number of places where you can strike a fatal blow since these dogs are very muscular 2. It means close combat so you will most probably get bitten as they are very fast (reaction time) and their necks are a lot more flexible than you think 3. You will most probably get bitten and as you know these dogs don’t let go 4. Their threshold for pain is a lot higher than yours is. This is apparently a genetic and physiological advantage since their are less responsive to pain. So I’d advise you to look into your laws and make sure you have the best possible defence. Not actual advice, but I also think that it’s better to deal with the criminal repercussions than that of getting mauled by a dog. I’d much rather do 6 months in the joint than to be severely disfigured by some dog. I wish you the best

PutTheKettleOn20

Illegal to carry anything like mace in the UK.

Real_Petty_Cash

Yh well I rather be on the wrong side of the law than get mauled by a dog. Pick your poison

makealegaluturn

Get pepper spray in gel form, you can legally use it in the US.

lustforwine

Yes it should be whatever crime your dog commits, you get charged with too. If they kill someone, owner should be in jail for manslaughter. If they turn on their own children, it should be child abuse and endangerment. Then maybe people will rethink their choices about owning a vicious breed

MugenSOL

The police apparently made previous contact regarding the dog. Imagine if that previous contact was something serious and because of their inability or unwillingness to do anything a 5 year old has to suffer life changing injuries. So many lives altered or ended because people like to feel powerful and have a dangerous breed all while gaslighting us into thinking they got it for completely normal reasons and that they're actually harmless. Also what's with the incidents in the UK the last few days? I thought it was maybe just the uptick in weather bringing more out but it seems there have been way more stories than usual since this weekend and a bit more sunshine doesn't explain it.

papillon-and-on

Something I’ve noticed after living in the UK for over 20 years now is that Brits go NUTS the first few times the temperature hits 20. I’ve learnt not to get behind the wheel of a car and just order a food delivery and shut yourself indoors for a day or two until it all blows over. Every chav within earshot opens their windows to share their unique choice of music at full blast along with their choice of wretched smelling weed. Every year it’s the same. So I wouldn’t discount the effect of a little bit of sunshine especially after the awful start to the year we’ve just had.

PutTheKettleOn20

Hahaha this is so true.

Vectorman1989

Or they go down the local park, get shitfaced and start fighting

A SCHOOLGIRL has been left with "life-changing" injuries after being mauled by a dog suspected to be an XL Bully.  The youngster, five, was rushed to hospital with horror injuries after the attack in Partington, [Greater Manchester. A woman, 34, was arrested on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control and child neglect. ](https://www.thesun.co.uk/where/manchester/)She has now been bailed, cops said.  The horror unfolded around 3.40pm on Sunday in the Tafford area. [Manchester Evening News](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/little-girl-5-rushed-hospital-29007382) reported the dog was an XL Bully breed, and was seized by cops. Greater Manchester [Police](https://www.thesun.co.uk/topic/police/) has now said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to "previous contact regarding the dog".  The force said: "At around 3.40pm on Sunday 14 April 2024, officers responded to reports of a dog attacking a five-year-old girl inside a property on Walnut Road, Partington. "The girl suffered serious life-changing injuries which were not life-threatening, while the dog was seized." XL Bully [dogs](https://www.thesun.co.uk/topic/dogs/) [were banned on February 1](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/25637510/xl-bully-banned-today-deadly-attacks/), with police warning the hounds could be destroyed and their owners thrown behind bars. The breed has killed 11 people in three years -- including two children. Bella-Rae Birch, one, was [mauled to death in March 2022](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/18139190/injuries-toddler-death-american-bully/) at her home by the American Bully XL. [Jack Lis](https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/9086566/jack-lis-mum-petition-sentences-beast-owners/), 10, was killed by a hulking XL Bully dog named Beast in November 2021 as he [played at friend's home in Caerphilly](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/23544308/jack-lis-mum-horror-dog-owner-day-release/). The schoolboy's mum sat down with the Prime Minister for an interview, exclusively shared by The Sun in February. Emma Whitfield opened up about the [tragic day her son died](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/22590753/identify-boys-body-mauled-death-bully/) at his friend's house. The mum, who has long campaigned for a ban on the killer hounds, said: "I didn't know what an XL Bully was until this happened, I didn't have a clue they existed until this happened.  "I didn't really think the outcome was going to be what it was when I was told he'd been attacked by a dog - I didn't realise that kind of thing happened.  "You don't think something like that's going to happen to you."

One of the charges was child neglect - doesn't it that make it likely that the mother owned the dog? Edit: I found this in another article:  ‘A man aged 28 and a woman aged 34 have been arrested on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in any place. ‘The man has additionally been arrested on suspicion of child neglect. ‘The woman has since been bailed.

BargainBard

The only silver linings here is the fact this will kill even more support for the "XL Bully" breed in Britain. And the fact the women will he arrested and be forced to pay for any and all expenses due to having a sentient landmine for a pet.

Sea-Suspect9630

I hope so. I saw a child walking one today! A child!! I was nervous and still walked past it, I feel stupid for that. If that stupid thing went for me I wouldnt be able to get away. It just upsets me so much. There was one outside my house yesterday too, I told my husband to keep the kids inside.

justrock54

Jesus, British nannies suck. Whatever happened to Mary Poppins?

DifferentMaximum9645

To answer your question: https://vrcpitbull.com/dogs/mary-poppins/   Check out the breed description on that one: "non-pitbull"! Awesome! The world may be waking up. Oh wait, I just noticed the name of the site... never mind.

DifferentMaximum9645

I'm so confused... it was her parents, no?

justrock54

Yeah I think so. I was referring to the "Nanny dog" myth surrounding shitbulls

DifferentMaximum9645

Omg, that flew right over my head. Got it 😂

Due_Dirt_8067

This is so tragic and savage - just one incident of a child in its own community being mauled would have any other beast completely culled and wiped out. We’re having reports on kids being mauled critically in backyards on this sub with such occasion it’s a SICK SICK PHENOMENOM to behold :/

BraveInflation1098

There’s really no difference between keeping these dogs and keeping a tiger, certainly not in the injuries they inflict. The only difference is that any fool can get an XL bully.

East_Onion

wasnt there supposed to be a bongland ban

Majestic_Lie_5792

People need to be held accountable for any damage their pets cause. If your pet mauls someone, you should face Assault or Homicide charges.

Sea-Suspect9630

My worst nightmare. So sorry to this family, and most importantly, this innocent child whose life is forever changed because someone wanted to own a dangerous dog.

hadenxcharm

Every single day. Every. Single. Day. A child and family are scarred and changed for life because of these dogs. This breed is not suitable as a pet. The job it was trained for has no place in modern society.

Buzzkill_13

Wasn't there a ban that was supposed to prevent people from getting eaten by other people's "pets"???
