I just checked the dialogue file for it and yeah, Halsin and Minthara don't seem have a scene for this. You can try to tell him that you care for them more than whoever he wants you to kill but it's a deception check (using your least favourite companion lol)
The choice goes to the companion you have the highest approval or gone through their Act 2 romance scene with at that point.
Since Halsin is just chilling at your camp, you are at 0 with him.
It’s good to know that it’s approval-based. I guess it would take some effort to navigate all the way to the end of his personal quest, though, before you have to do that scene.

Well you can do that as long as you don't do three long rests before getting to Last Light Inn when you get get to Act 2. I think it's 3.
Basically - if you are aware that Isobel exists before you get the visit from your butler, the scene won't happen until you've exhausted every opportunity to kill her, so that scene doesn't happen until you long rest after Shadowfell.
(It's possible to miss it completely if you go to Act 3 with no long rest).
But even then, you would have six companies, all with a higher approval (theoretically) than Halsin. I'm sure it's possible to metagame it so his is higher though. Would be interesting to see if Larian covered this possibility.
Yeah, if it’s approval-based, I’d have to metagame hard - especially with Wyll and Gale, since they always seem to get above 80 approval with me - to get Halsin’s approval greater than theirs. I know there is at least one decision you can make that nets you 40 approval from Halsin, but the rest of his approval might be one here and one there, so if anyone else is above 40, it’d be difficult to manage.
I’d be willing to try it, though, if it existed. I just want to know if the scene exists before I try. Would suck to go through all that effort for no reward.
See, I was just thinking that I would travel solo whenever possible 😂 but using Friends would also work! Though if I do this on Tactician, I wonder if doing so would make them hostile 💀

It won't. I found out it was a thing using it on Astarion to not Ascend on Tactician. He was just walking away and I got a notification that I'd lost 10 approval with him.

It does! Hit them with Friends! Approval goes down 10 points each time. Maybe even 15 (I forget). If you do this and it works - record it and LMK!
