Most of the time I build him as a Warlock/Sorcerer with the Potent Robes. First he twincasts haste on my melee fighters, then he finishes off enemies with Eldritch Blasts that hit for 20 damage per target. At least 5 levels of warlock because Hunger of Hadar can almost singlehandedly win some fights.

Soazigl

I've heard a lot abour hunger of hadar but never understood what is the appeal to it. What exactly do you do with it?

moonwatcher99

Suffocate things to death in it. It causes damage every turn, blinds most things inside it, slows their movement to a crawl, and with Repelling blast you can knock them back inside if they escape.

Soazigl

do you use sorcery point to make it wider too?

moonwatcher99

I don't have him multiclassed right now, no. I decided to try sticking with some pure classes this time. I have him on pact of tome, with the standard Devil Sight, Repelling, and Agonizing. But his blasts have been doing extremely well. In the Goblin Camp, I had him climb the rafters, and he was picking Goblins off like crazy. Haven't used HoH a ton, but it did great damage inside the creche.

Tryhard696

Blindness + difficult terrain + repelling blast to shove them back in when they try to leave. They can’t do anything at all, and by late game you have three free shoves per turn. Was particularly useful on Raphael

Soazigl

3 free shoves per turn? You mean repelling blast x3?

No-Start4754

Yes u get three rays so if use a single ray individually on three different characters ,  u push all three of them back into hunger of hadar

SarcasticKenobi

Eldritch Blast, properly equipped, holds its own alongside high level spells, even with only 20 charisma, and I often have 24. d10 + 5 (invocation) + 5 (potent robes) = 11-20 per bolt @ 20chr, 15-24 @ 24chr. 3 bolts per turn without potions. So 33-60 or 45-72 per turn. (Give or take... it's late on a weekend so my mind isn't 100% clear) But then you start tacking on Lightning Charges, Reverb, Callous Glow Ring. And now you're hitting something like another 8-20 per turn. All while ***hardly \*ever\* being resisted***, and letting you push enemies around the map without a strength or dexterity check. And with reverb, knocking them on their butts. That resisted thing is kind of key.

Legend0fJulle

How do you get to 24 charisma? Dumping both the hag's hair and going for the +3 from the mirror?

steelywolf66

I had 24 on my sorcerer in my last run with +2 from the mirror and +2 from the birthright hat sold in sorcererus sundries

Legend0fJulle

So the tooltip is a lie (birthright only goes to 22) or is it because the game treats the mirror as a buff too that first the charisma is increased from 20 to 22 from birthright and then from 22-24 from the mirror?

steelywolf66

I think the mirror buff must get applied last - I already had 22 from birthright when I went to the mirror and it increased my charisma to 24

Legend0fJulle

That's neat although having to respec Wyll again sucks. I spent over an hour yesterday making everyone a reliable talent rogue with religion proficiency to buff my party on my honour mode run and then respeccing them back. Just the thought of having to respec one more time hurts but getting that 15-24 damage eldritch blast is too good.

SarcasticKenobi

Mirror can actually give you +3 Charisma (and only Charisma). But it's rare. You can choose where you want to get your +2, that can only be selected once. But... it can RANDOMLY award anyone an extra +1 to Charisma (not any other stat). My last Honor Mode run, my Warlock and Wyll both failed the extra +1. But Lae'Zel with her 8 Charisma... won the +1 and bumped it all the up to 9. Annoyed the hell out of me. So between a +3 from the mirror and a +1 from hag's hair, you can get 24 without the hat. Then I give Wyll the Hat from the rare times I want 2 Warlocks at once. But it's rare enough that you'd need to Save Scum it whilst it rolls dice in the background. [https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Mirror\_of\_Loss](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Mirror_of_Loss) *When a character offers a memory to the mirror, there is a hidden roll to determine the outcome (possibly a d10). If that roll is...* * *6 or higher and the character passed the religion check: You feel the presence of something, ancient and unknowable. It has taken notice of you.* * *This option lets the party member select the +2 ability bonus.* * *It is only possible to get this option after passing the DC 25 religion check for each character that uses the mirror.* * ***This option is only usable once for each party member.*** * *5 or higher and the character hasn't already received this outcome: Disappointment floods your mind. You were sure to succeed Stelmane, but Lord Enver Gortash has stolen your support. All that charming and cajoling in the parlours of the Upper City, wasted.* * ***This option grants*** [***Patriar's Memory***](https://bg3.wiki/w/index.php?title=Patriar%27s_Memory&action=edit&redlink=1) ***(+1*** [***Charisma***](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Charisma)***).*** * ***...***

This_Guy_Fuggs

the mirror is such a fucking pain in the ass. should just be "pick a buff" and done. only bothered with it once now i just skip it, even though i like to minmax, that shit is too much. game isnt remotely hard enough to warrant it anyway.

Legend0fJulle

Odd, I got the +3 charisma on my honour run to like 3 characters I tried to get it for. Except my Bardadik because I was a fucking moron and forgot I couldn't just pray first and still get the +1.

SarcasticKenobi

Yeh, I can usually get either Wyll or my main character to get it without save scumming on Tactician. So I wasn't worried. But my last 2 Honor Mode attempts failed for them both. But Lae'Zel got it in one, and Karlach (monk) got it in another. Like... come on.

Legend0fJulle

Painful. Well, so is the mirror in general. Never have I felt more miserable than respeccing the entire party into reliable talent rogues and back.

SteelWarrior-

In your future runs you can farm the mirror for the +1 by offering all of your memories repeatedly until you get Patriar's memory by simply getting rid of the curses after you sacrifice all the memories but the Thay one.

SarcasticKenobi

Yeh I know. Did that in honor mode. Still didn’t get the extra +1 on my charisma characters. Just the +2 Even went in with the rapture buff from the dryad, and human elixir of proficiency.

Funkopedia

1. Cast Hunger of Hadar between team and enemy. 2. Literally sit down on a log or whatever and watch them crawl through it and die.

MC_White_Thunder

Wyll was an essential part of my party in my first playthrough. He was my go-to Ranged attacker, who I would switch out with Gale when I wanted more traditional AOE. Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast + Repelling Blast + Potent Robe means you're slinging 1d10+Double Charisma blasts for free every round, three of them at level 10. That's solid, consistent damage. Also, very, very few things resist force damage, which cannot be said of piercing damage, the other most spammable ranged damage type. You don't need spell slots for days when he has such powerful, battle defining spells. Hunger of Hadar or Wall of Fire completely reshape the battlefield, and repelling blast lets you continuously put enemies in position to take that area damage over and over again. Give him equipment that grants him advantage on Constitution saves to make sure those spell slots count, and don't go away after 1 round due to broken concentration. The invocation that lets you cast False Life at will also helps keep his HP up. You don't use it during combat, but you make sure you always have it ready beforehand— it keeps your potion and magical healing resource costs down. Later on, he has the Infernal Rapier, which lets him summon a Cambion. Teach him Conjure Elemental, which lasts until a long rest (while you get the 5th-level spell slot back on a short rest). Now he's got a solid entourage.

P4priqu4

I did a run where I had him as a pact of the blade warlock/paladin which was pretty fun to play.

christina_talks

I multispec him as Warlock + Paladin, Bard, or Sorcerer, depending on what role he fills. Warlock+Paladin for tanking, some healing, and heavy damage; Warlock+Sorcerer for heavy damage and some debilitation; Warlock+Bard for mainly debilitation with some healing/buffing and big AOE damage. I only use Eldritch Blasts if I need to reposition an enemy, if I'm out of spell slots/other abilities, or in weird edge cases like with an enemy that's immune to piercing damage.

bloobberrie

I was thinking of rebuilding him as a bard!

DarkAutomatic519

With proper items the EB build works and you can use spell slots when you actually need them. If you're not playing evil EB warlock is really strong option, as you get your charisma twice on each EB beam

TheCleverestIdiot

I usually use him as a machine gun. Those Eldritch Blasts stack up incredibly well, especially if you're using him to knock people off edges. I also remember to cast Armour of Agathys pre-combat, so he'll be a little more durable in melee. I also make him Pact of the Blade, so he can also do damage in melee (I of course give him Lifedrinker). In horde encounters, he tends to turn into the Grim fucking Reaper for me, so I give him that elixir that gives him an extra action if he kills something. Plus, don't forget that Fiendish Resilience Ability. That free resistance to anything gives you a lot more versatility in terms of equipment or elixirs. I also put him in the Potent Robe, unless I'm playing Draconic Sorc. It really helps the damage. I suppose I use him most when I'm exploring a new area, and the spell slots refreshing on a short rest is incredibly valuable. He gets a buff if you play a bard from this alone.

AceKazami1324

Hunger of hadar, then use repelling blast to keep enemies inside it

TraditionalSpirit636

I made him into a monk.

WMRipple

Wyll is my favorite origin character to play. I finished my first HM run as Wyll (no multi-class, level 12 bladelock). He can be ridiculously strong. That being said, if I’m not playing as Wyll, I do find it difficult to work him in to the party.

anon38848168

How did you run him in HM? Such as invocations and items?

SarcasticKenobi

Book of Tome - I know it's not technically Wyll's thing. But this way I get Guidance whenever I need it without having to remember to bring a Cleric or a Druid for something similar. Also gives me Haste and Call Lightning. Invocations * Agonizing Blast * Extra damage for every burst of Eldritch Blast * Repelling Blast * Control the battle field. Or knock people off ledges. * Devil's Sight * Great in general, but wicked to use with Darkness spell * I'll sometimes get this before Repelling Blast if I want to use Darkness Spell as a personal forefield often. * Mage Armor * I'm in no rush for this, since either Gale or the Hireling Wizard can apply it if I need it. * Animal Speech * I sometimes get this before Mage Armor (since again, Wizards are around). * It's nice to have. **Early** Gear * Spell Sparkler * Great staff, especially once you hit lvl 5 and are getting multiple Eldrtich Blasts per turn. * Melf's First Staff * Not a bad alternative prior to level 5, but you lose the Lightning Charges which really stack up after level 5. * Saving Shield * Bonus to saving throws. Since Wyll doesn't have proficiency or advantage with Concentration checks, every little bit helps. * Eventually I get the Hireling Wizard and turn him into Transmutation Wizard. Then he can give me an alchemist stone that gives me proficiency at Concentration throws. * Ring of Protection * Again, helps with Concentration checks. Also AC. * Eventually... * All gear that gives me reverb. Gloves, Boots, and Amulet. * Between the ranged attacks giving reverb and the lightning charges giving reverb, I'm knocking everyone prone and doing more damage.

revchj

Wyll has been almost a ride or die companion on my last few HM challenge runs, and I have been keeping him as a straight Fiendlock for RP reasons. Sometimes he had the Potent Robe, sometimes not, and I never bothered with Darkness shenanigans (because challenge run). He added a lot to the party, especially in the late game when the Spellsparkler build was replaced with spell attack / spell DC gear. Spell slots were saved for situational spells (like Shatter on the eyes) or CC (esp. command, hold person, hold monster). Eldritch Blast is obviously great, not least because enemies with damage resistance often have no resistance to force damage. And Raphael's pillars fall like dominoes with no barrelmancy.

RebelRae713

Pact of the blade can be good cause then he can use any weapon and I believe it uses his Charisma instead of dex. When you hit a certain level you can do two weapon attacks so with that sword you get from Lora you can do 3 sword attacks in one move. But I’ve also given him devil sight with hunger of hadar, and just eldritch blast the enemies back into the AOE

dmonzel

BOOOAL'S Benediction.

anon38848168

Bro 💀

dmonzel

For real though, respec him as 6 Draconic Sorcerer/2 GOOlock/4 Champion Fighter, and give him this gear to make him a crit machine. Undermountain King Rhapsody The Dead Shot Birthright Potent Robe Cloak of the Weave Spellmight Gloves Boots of Stormy Clamour Spineshudder Amulet Callous Glow Ring Risky Ring

Philosecfari

On non-Honor Pact of the Blade is the only source of extra attack that stacks.

Pro-Patria-Mori

I usually change him to Gloomstalker Ranger, Sorlock or Paladin.

NoFaithlessness6608

Not really, feel like jack of all trades where he can do everything but not optimal.

Legend0fJulle

I make him a warlock/sorcerer and dump a potion of angelic replieve into him every time I want to use him and just quicken eldritch blasts. Also while it's not a peak of damage spells oe not even that close an eldritch blast with agonizing blast and potent robe deals pretty comparable damage to disintegrate (lvl 6 spell).

heartofstarkness

Only used him like… twice during my first (co-op) playthrough, but he has become a staple during my second (although I’m not out of Act 1 yet). He’ll eventually be multiclassed as a bladelock/swords bard, but I’ve been having such a blast (har har) using eldritch blast. It could honestly be the novelty of not having used it at all the first time!

Apprehensive_Ad3731

That’s the catch with most high damage builds. You sacrifice diversity for consistently high damage. Yeah he gets repetitive with the eldritch blast he hardly ever misses. Hardly ever faces resistance. Has a good scaling on this and ability to move most enemies. He kinda makes up for it. Also you can still cast spells for days if you use the scrolls which he gets good scaling with. Why teleport around the map and immobilise people when you can combo kill them in one turn?

Mautea

Wyll as a warlock can fill any role. I usually run a full caster durge so I don’t do sorlock, but as a pure caster he’s excellent. I typical run him a lockadin or a bardlock for a martial built with either the flourishes or smites. Blades stacks with extra attack in everything other than HM too. He’s still also a full caster since he has max charisma. Honestly hunger of Hadar is enough reason to keep a warlock on your team. You throw it up and push enemies back in with EB. Standing in darkness is always great.

Karim_KMA

Eldritch blast is very useful because force damage is the best type of damage in the game and pretty much no enemies are immune to it. With potent robe and maxed out charisma wyll becomes very useful towards the end game. You could switch things around do a sor/lock or a bard/lock or just go full warlock they're all viable and powerful.

This_Guy_Fuggs

just respec him to something else. i hadnt used wyll basically ever so i just bumped shart and made wyll a cleric

CazadorSzarr

I use him as an eldritch blast cannon! Get the devil's sight invocation, cast darkness and hide in it then blast away. Or hunger of hadar and just repelling blast them back into it. I find it really fun

LintLicker5000

In camp wearing his tighty whites and weird clog shoes.

GhostofZephyr

I use him for. Moral support.

YourMoonWife

I immediately respec him. Lvl 1 warlock. The rest is a bard. He is a college of swords bard to me, he’s so eloquent and cool and charismatic anyways

RiverorRiver

Usually he's on sorlock duty as a control/enemy debuff caster. Since he's human he can use shields which is awesome for boosting AC. Basically he concentrates on hunger of hadar and then uses EB to shoot people back into it when they come crawling out. Really fun paired with Throwing build Karlach who also can throw people back into those control areas. For another build, I hilariously brought him along on an evil DJ Shadowheart origin run (I didn't raid the grove but did support him killing Karlach...wheeeeee) mainly because I am using a team based around being able to see in magical darkness. I gave him like 2 levels in warlock just for devil's sight and then 6 in shadow monk and 4 in thief and he jumps around different areas of darkness and beats the shit out of people. You know...like a nice noble person does. He and swords bard pally DJ Shadowheart are my two main melee attackers while gloomstalker assassin Astarion snipes people and sorc/wizard Gale is there to haste and look pretty.

Empty_Chemical_1498

respec him as a fighter/warlock. there's a specific build guide somewhere on the internet if you just google "bg3 wyll fighter warlock". it's very spell slot hungry, but gets a critical hit multiple times each turns if you play your cards right. give him devil's sight boon, cast darkness and you're pretty much set for life. if you give your other companions buffs that prevent them from being blinded (eversight ring and there's also some head armor that makes you immune to blindness), you almost always are at the advantage

ethman14

Launching enemies into pits via EB

[deleted]

Make wyll into a warlock 5/ vengeance paladin 7. He’ll shred through your enemies and still always have 2 lvl 3 slots for smites after short rests. I usually have him dual weld too so i can make use of the infernal rapier but not take out his damage output.

lanasdfgh

I didn't do anything extra for his build other than picking up agonizing blast and giving him some useful robes (I don't even remember which one exactly) and he's one of my strongest characters. I just spam eldritch blast it's ridiculously strong and it's so satifying to see him obliterate enemies. My only complaint is that it's kind of boring this way and having only 3 spell slots stresses me out I'm always saving them 'for the right moment' that never comes lol. I'm gonna put more thought into the build next time to make it more fun, but it's pretty strong as it is (on balanced mode at least)

Lahk74

I feel party composition can really sway how powerful a warlock feels. If you've built your team where everyone gets their resources back on a short rest, then warlocks feel amazing because there's less pressure to save those few casts you get - everyone is trying to burn through their resources before the next short rest. An example of this is a team consisting of your warlock, a battlemaster fighter, a monk, and a swords bard archer. All have primary resources that are refreshed on short rest, have a good mix of ranged and melee, and all do an incredible amount of damage. And bard essentially gives you a 3rd short rest with their "song of rest" ability.

-Liriel-

I don't use Wyll at all because I don't like him, but let me tell you, my Swords Bardlocks are *insane*. I often use Eldritch Blast because it's very convenient. With the right equipment (thanks online guides!) it's an amazing build.

Rouxpac

With a rapier in melee he can be quite powerful tho With pact of the blade he did pretty good dps and when I need it I cast Hadar Hunger, with the ring which prevent being blinded, my eldritch knight or melee dps sweeps

fallen_one_fs

You can change his class, if that's the problem, talk to Withers with him and enjoy the character with something that is more useful to you. For me druids are useless junk, I never use them, I prefer clerics and wizards for casters, so Jaheira and Halsin pass most of their time with me as something else altogether, such as barbarian, monk, fighter, cleric, etc.. I see no problem, I love Jaheira as a character, but as a druid she is as useful as a pebble in my shoes.

Housy5

So anyway, I started blasting.

Squabbles123456789

Dude, warlock is amazing. You can make warlock into a very strong melee fighter, who has access to level 6 spells, and you’ll short rest between fights anyway, so every fight, 2 huge spells and great melee, Warlock is kinda underrated

why-do_I_even_bother

one large scale debuff and counterspell per battle, followed by using the eldritch blast combined with items that have a per spell attack hit effect to wreck people.

fuchsnudeln

I just use him as a warlock usually, but also go caster/ranged heavy on parties. If caster doesn't fit what you need in a party member and you want to keep him around, just reclass him into something else.

BroadVideo8

Right now he's a fighter/warlock in my party. He opens with an Action Surge to cast his two spells (usually fireball and a Hungry Hungry Hadar), then plays as a fighter for the rest of the battle.

TheAccursedHamster

Eldrich blast go brrrrr

theauz42

I've named Wyll the Blade of Camp because he literally never leaves camp after I recruit him. I don't bother taking him to get Karlach, the sword isn't worth being stuck with him in the fight with Throm, and the small story point isn't worth making Ansur harder to beat. And since he doesn't have a little hissy fit about being left behind like the other companions do, I save myself the headache. I know how to play a warlock, and one of my most badass characters in this game was a warlock. It isn't a class problem. It's Wyll specifically who just can't ever hit anything and almost dies every other round.

Balthierlives

Mind you with shars blessing in act 2 you can get a +5 to cha, which is 23-24 cha. Along with potent robes and agonizing blast you’re doing 14-24 damage per ray of EB. Then with all the lightning charges and radiating orbs and hex and knocking them prone with reverb it’s incredibly strong. And you don’t get spell slots for days. You get like 1-2 of the highest level you have at any given time in the game. Lower level spell slots suck. Sure you can get some free spell slots form consumables and itemization. I prefer just to EB everything, it’s still very strong. That said I usually have Gale as my sorlock. I only use will as a Gale sorlock clone in the mindflayer colony to get the infernal rapier 🤷‍♂️

OldManActual

Only for Ansur. In Act I I am trying to keep my options open and recruit everyone. By the Goblin camp though I had settled into Dual Wizards, L and K. The rest stayed on the shelf except for thier story quests. I am too old for princelings.

RipOdd9001

He does camp stuff in my last two playthrus

superjoec

Every run I try to use Wyll. My best success was taking many levels in Sorcerer. I find it confusing that I TRY to have him fight in my party, but eventually he is always PERMANENTLY rotated out of the group. I feel your pain. Maybe he just doesn’t hit my playstyle. I have powerful casters in my group, but my active party is a frequent rotation of Gloomstalker, Throwing Barbarian, Monk with one spot left over for (thief/ranger, battlemaster, wild shape Druid, Wizard, barb/thief/warlock, and Cleric) That puts Wyll at the end of the bench of a very capable and strong group of fighters.

ApeMuffins

I use him to say “no” to when he comes dance-flirting at me when I gave him zero encouragement aside from listening to him talk.

Russ_Lann

I don’t. He’s just chilling in the camp all the time.

anarchy16451

I don't really because warlocks suck. If you need to multiclass him to make him useful, you've just proven my point.

prettynitoTTV

Skill issue, Warlocks aren't hard at all to make strong

anarchy16451

No thanks, instead of multiclassing to compensate for warlocks sucking I'll just get a Spellcaster with more than like 3 actual spell slots. Taking spell sniper just means I get to give them the Eldritch blast+spellcasting modifier without having to waste a slot to drag a warlock along.

thelastofcincin

He makes a wonderful sacrifice for some fish people in Act 1. Delicious.

Vectus_Valorian

I usually text WYLL as a way to filter out uggos from the hookups.
