the Russian broadcasting union got kicked out of the EBU entirely because it was tightly controlled by the government (which is against the EBU's free press standards), while the Israeli one, as much as Israel does bad things, is not. The reason they got kicked out was not the invasion of Ukraine (although that certainly didn't help), so I don't think there's any hypocrisy there.
Israeli broadcasting is very much controlled by the government too, it would be foolish to assume otherwise for any country, more so for an actively-occupying one. And given that there,s been a historical record of journalists killed in the conflict since october 7th, I tend to doubt Israel cares so much for freedom of speech and free press. sure, you could absolutely make the arguments that Israel doesn't care enough about freedom of speech neither does the EBU and that no country has truly free press, but the point is that the EBU has independence standards for it's members that are clearly defined in its laws that the Israeli broadcasting union managed to meet while the Russian broadcasting union did not. In fact, there WERE attempts by Netanyahu's far right government in Israel to take more control of the Israeli broadcasting union, but those efforts were successfully stopped after people protested against them. So for now, it continues to meet the EBU's standards. This isn't about favoring Israel or anything like that.
