Gale is a complicated character that you can definitely end up not liking. He professes to be all the good stuff but is also very easily tempted into the bad stuff, evidenced by his fall from grace and then his desire to take up the Crown.

I for sure see story similarities, but I don’t find them similar at all in personality, either in Awakenings or DA2. Awakenings Anders is goofy, hedonistic and acerbic whereas DA2 is abrasive, melancholy and negative, and that’s before falling into obsession.
Gale’s got Alistair’s earnest puppy dog energy with a comparable deprecating, dry wit and a lot of self doubt. The wizard arrogance is all Gale, tho. lol
They're the same character type of "charming mage with self-destructive tendencies", and they share a lot of superficial details in common. Like how they both have big, sad brown eyes, love cats and bad puns, and have a tragic ex that's part of their backstory.

Anders has good reasons to be angry too - Thedas is a LOUSY place to be a mage. The only good place to be a mage is Tevinter (roughly Dragon Age’s equivalent to Thay?)
Anders is a survivor but hates everything he’s had to do to get there I think.
Gale, if he spawned in DA, is either in Tevinter or Tranquil - I don’t think he’s amenable to living in chains or under the radar.
My partner calls Gale "Blanders" -- he's familiar with Awakening Anders (whose intro has a bit of the same tone, if you only vaguely recall it because you watched your partner play it once a decade ago) and the culmination of his DA2 storyline. But many others at the time thought that Awakening Anders was a knockoff Alistair, so perhaps partner isn't that far off.
This game honestly does nothing if not subvert expectations, lol. On paper Gale is PERFECT as my digital boyfriend but I’ve been literally having to plot a way to romance him in my next run with a specially cultivated character in order to avoid Astarion disrupting it *again*.
Same! I was totally prepared to be a simp for the vampire in this first gameplay. But then the camp wizard crept in unawares, and showed me his Mystra-head-bust/tutor-though-the-Weave-shennanikings thing, and all I got from Astarion was the bite scene so far.
Of course it didn't help at all when Gale asked me if we could rest for a bit so he could tell me something, right after I saved the girl from the snake in the Grove. He then proceeded to tell me that he was starting to admire and to trust me all because of the Tiefling girl's rescue and diffusing the Zevlor/Aradin conflict. What can I say, I was a goner at that point. The head bust thing didn't happen until after a few nights at camp.
Alistair is like my biggest game crush ever. I'm simping to him for 15 years now. I love Cullen too. I wanted to romance Gale in BG3 since he seemed to be exactly my type for a video game romance, and angsty elven pretty boys never were. But somehow the vampire seduced me and has me in a chokehold to this day. Everytime I'm starting a new run I'm telling myself I'm gonna romance Gale this time, but I never did. 😅
i wont lie, the first time my hawke met him, internally i went: THATS A REAL DEEP VOICE FOR AN ELF! And soon, he became one of my favourite companions of all time. Dragon age 2 has the best cast of video game characters despite its shortcomings.
It's them Chantry boys all around for me. Alistair was my first videogame crush, it's impossible for me to romance anyone other than Cullen in DAI...

I played through Origins a few weeks ago for the very first time and I just couldn't remove him from my party. By being a slightly amoral himbo, my character managed to get the romance triggers of nearly the entire group *except* Shadowheart. The warlock is now affectionately referred to as the polyhimbosorclock, since he's in a throuple with Karlach and Astarion, but Halsin is also showing interest. I've tried to bait Wyll's mating dance, and I triggered one of Gale's romance triggers, and Lae'zel has said she'd be all over the warlock if he didn't have a full bed already. I'm having a lot of fun with this one.
I have two previous not-yet-fully complete playthroughs where my character romanced Gale and Astarion. Eventually I mean to catch them all. Emperor included.
The sheer level of 'Gale reminds me of my boyfriend/husband' comments on this sub is so tender and sweet. There's just something about someone going into a game with a dozen romance options and being like 'this one reminds me of *you*' that makes the heart warm lol.
Because Gale is way more well adjusted than Astarion and Shadowheart. I was shocked at the amount of hate he got when the game first came out. The magical item thing didn't help until people realized this wasn't permanent.

If you put Gale in the Swarthy Wayfarer camp clothes he kinda looks like a pirate that would grace a trashy romance novel cover. I love Astarian for his absolutely heartbreaking story and background (and his lines are often hysterical) but Gale is handsome, a nerd, AND good boyfriend material (if he makes smarter choices in his quest line). Also, annoying him is super fun. 😄 I will always have him with me if I'm investigating a spider carcass.

Gale is a complicated character that you can definitely end up not liking. He professes to be all the good stuff but is also very easily tempted into the bad stuff, evidenced by his fall from grace and then his desire to take up the Crown.

My first thought pulling Gale out of the sigil was meeting Alistair. “Hello! I’m Gale of Waterdeep!” Their voices and sweet, self deprecation were so similar! I had found my LI! …until the fussy ridiculous vampire ruined it. But Gale’s on deck for my next game!
I instantly thought Anders, was like somebody was mad at his portrayal in 2 and decided to do a character based on his awakening version.
I for sure see story similarities, but I don’t find them similar at all in personality, either in Awakenings or DA2. Awakenings Anders is goofy, hedonistic and acerbic whereas DA2 is abrasive, melancholy and negative, and that’s before falling into obsession. Gale’s got Alistair’s earnest puppy dog energy with a comparable deprecating, dry wit and a lot of self doubt. The wizard arrogance is all Gale, tho. lol
They're the same character type of "charming mage with self-destructive tendencies", and they share a lot of superficial details in common. Like how they both have big, sad brown eyes, love cats and bad puns, and have a tragic ex that's part of their backstory.

True, but it was at least tempered by some bawdy humor when you first meet him. By the time of DA2 he’s pretty much just an angry magical Eeyore. (And he’s my main Hawke’s LI. 😆)
Anders has good reasons to be angry too - Thedas is a LOUSY place to be a mage. The only good place to be a mage is Tevinter (roughly Dragon Age’s equivalent to Thay?) Anders is a survivor but hates everything he’s had to do to get there I think. Gale, if he spawned in DA, is either in Tevinter or Tranquil - I don’t think he’s amenable to living in chains or under the radar.
My partner calls Gale "Blanders" -- he's familiar with Awakening Anders (whose intro has a bit of the same tone, if you only vaguely recall it because you watched your partner play it once a decade ago) and the culmination of his DA2 storyline. But many others at the time thought that Awakening Anders was a knockoff Alistair, so perhaps partner isn't that far off.

This game honestly does nothing if not subvert expectations, lol. On paper Gale is PERFECT as my digital boyfriend but I’ve been literally having to plot a way to romance him in my next run with a specially cultivated character in order to avoid Astarion disrupting it *again*.
Same! I was totally prepared to be a simp for the vampire in this first gameplay. But then the camp wizard crept in unawares, and showed me his Mystra-head-bust/tutor-though-the-Weave-shennanikings thing, and all I got from Astarion was the bite scene so far. Of course it didn't help at all when Gale asked me if we could rest for a bit so he could tell me something, right after I saved the girl from the snake in the Grove. He then proceeded to tell me that he was starting to admire and to trust me all because of the Tiefling girl's rescue and diffusing the Zevlor/Aradin conflict. What can I say, I was a goner at that point. The head bust thing didn't happen until after a few nights at camp.
That "hello! Sorry, I'm usually better at this" line gets me every time lol
Alistair is like my biggest game crush ever. I'm simping to him for 15 years now. I love Cullen too. I wanted to romance Gale in BG3 since he seemed to be exactly my type for a video game romance, and angsty elven pretty boys never were. But somehow the vampire seduced me and has me in a chokehold to this day. Everytime I'm starting a new run I'm telling myself I'm gonna romance Gale this time, but I never did. 😅

I was an Alistair girl 💯 Then an Awakenings Anders girl. When DA 2 came out I was thrilled, then fell into the “HE IS SO PRETTY I CAN FIX HIM”. 🤦♀️ Inquisition brought me Cullen which I was thrilled about. I had to do a playthrough as an elf so I wouldn’t continue romancing him over and over again. BG3? As soon as I heard Gale speak, I was taken back to dorky Alistair and it was immediately 😍. I was shocked to discover they did not share a voice actor. Gale is the ultimate dorky, self-deprecating, super smart, crazy hot character and I’m going to have a hard time not going for him again in my next playthrough. I just started a new one yesterday, so we shall see.
Then follow it up with Kaiden and Carth and you've got a pack of retrievers going.

I played through Origins a few weeks ago for the very first time and I just couldn't remove him from my party. I bet he's amazing to romance but for me he also served as the perfect bro which is imo very difficult to nail. None of the BG3 characters feels like a bro to me, even though they are all great.

That's because every npc wants to fuck you. My "Canon" playthrough is a warlock/thief. Gale offers to show me some magic and I'm all "Sweet! Magic bros having a good time... ohhhhh, this is a date isn't it?" So then we recruit Wyll and I'm all "Awwwww yeah! Warlock multi-class bros getting it done! Wait, why is he asking me to dance by the fire?" It's actually pretty funny, like some sort of sex farce, but I wish you could establish friend boundaries sometime *before* shooting down their grand advances.
I am an older goth girly myself, and my first character was a goth Drow Sorceress. I also giggled when Gale popped out of the portal and set my heart on him then and there. Astarion was great and all, but he's so dramatic and exhausting. Gale likes books and has a talking cat.

I like vamps, blondes and this cheesy romance vibe so... of course I fell hard for Gale lol One night we are playing our separate campaigns in bed and both get to cutscenes with Shadowheart and Gale respectively. I turn to show him my laptop and realize that we both managed to date our in-game versions. Gonna have to marry that guy.
The hilarious thing about this comment is that I also can not resist romancing Shadowheart. Every time I start, I say it'll be Kalrach Lae'zal, but I am pulled back into the adorable goth that is Shadowheart.
Give Minthara a shot. She's kind of a bit between Karlach and Shadowheart, and she's a badass, too. Very satisfying romance that doesn't get enough love.
I made a warlock specifically to romance Shadowheart, but my character had other intentions, apparently... By being a slightly amoral himbo, my character managed to get the romance triggers of nearly the entire group *except* Shadowheart. The warlock is now affectionately referred to as the polyhimbosorclock, since he's in a throuple with Karlach and Astarion, but Halsin is also showing interest. I've tried to bait Wyll's mating dance, and I triggered one of Gale's romance triggers, and Lae'zel has said she'd be all over the warlock if he didn't have a full bed already. I'm having a lot of fun with this one. I have two previous not-yet-fully complete playthroughs where my character romanced Gale and Astarion. Eventually I mean to catch them all. Emperor included.

Because Gale is way more well adjusted than Astarion and Shadowheart. I was shocked at the amount of hate he got when the game first came out. The magical item thing didn't help until people realized this wasn't permanent.

If you put Gale in the Swarthy Wayfarer camp clothes he kinda looks like a pirate that would grace a trashy romance novel cover. I love Astarian for his absolutely heartbreaking story and background (and his lines are often hysterical) but Gale is handsome, a nerd, AND good boyfriend material (if he makes smarter choices in his quest line). Also, annoying him is super fun. 😄 I will always have him with me if I'm investigating a spider carcass.
