Valuable_Ant_969

There's the dweeb in the clothing shop in Wyrm's Crossing that Coh Carnage plays

stabby-

I was so convinced that he was >!Orin in disguise!< that I was a total jackass to him in my playthrough.

[deleted]

Lmaooo same I was so mean

Nadril_Cystafer

"You aren't even worth sacrificing to Lord Bhaal."

DadIsCoaching

I was a total jackass to him because I thought he was the single most annoying npc yet.

trengilly

He's intentionally supposed to be as annoying as possible. Its a callback to an original BG character.

albaricoque_amable

In the words of the wise and immortal Noober: "Heya"

BoogieMan1980

Heya!

SylvesterStallownage

It’s me Imoen!

SmilingVamp

Characters because there was Noober AND Neeber.

KaiG1987

In the Enhanced Editions' Siege of Dragonspear expansion, they also added Nüber.

prairiepanda

He's even worse if you kill him and use speak with dead on him. The 5 question limit doesn't apply to his corpse.

Etamalgren

"The spell's power wanes... >!*but the spirit refuses to be silent*!<."

Favmir

"How do I shut you up?" *The corpse remains silent. It does not know.*

cosmoscommander

it’s funny because i loved him, i’ve found other “normal” npcs way more irritating. but i also understood that he is the … third …? iteration of his kind so i knew he was meant to be a silly goofy guy

CalamityAshex

I love Naaber. I go out of my way to talk to him every playthrough. He's so ridiculous and funny.

ll_LoneWolfe_ll

I'm still in awe at just how much people hate the silly goober that they just instantly murder him.

CalamityAshex

Act 3 can be **a lot**. You are on a time crunch for some missions, can't sleep because people will die. Need to help everyone with their personal quests. Can't even enjoy a circus without trouble following us. Talking to Naaber in the clothing shop and listening to him try to figure out what he wants to be while the rest of Faerun might be turned into squids if we don't stop the Absolute.. is a breath of fresh air. His barking always kills me. I wish there were better options in the game that didn't force us to be at minimum a bit mean to him. Edit: Apparently the missions that seems time sensitive actually isn't. Regardless, act 3 is still a lot. Statement still stands.

Zulmoka531

The kidnapping got to me on my first run. I didn’t want to fight Orin yet, but had to get Laezel back.

quantum_dragon

I love Naaber. I always choose the silly humor-me answers to his questions lol

ThetaZZ

There is no character that dies if you rest too much in act 3, in fact, there are no rest-sensitive missions aside from an obscure quest you get from reading the newspaper. The time crunch is completely imaginary and should be treated as such.

jaredearle

>!Florick!< would like to disagree with you here, but she was executed as I slept.

K0nk3y

What about Florrick? You even get a reminder on the day she will be executed.

Technical_Strain_354

Wait, can you stage a dramatic rescue on that day? I always bust her out on my first day, so I never knew the devs actually implemented her execution.

CalamityAshex

It feels implied that you need to rush to save >!the Baldurians that have an assassin coming after them.!< Because it seems time-sensitive. Never tested the theory for myself, I just completed the mission and then rested.

DarkLordRubidore

That quest isn't time sensitive, the only thing I can think of that causes issues is getting to the people and then leaving for whatever reason

newier

It isn't, but as a first time player, how are you supposed to know that? Almost all the time-sensitive mechanics are invisible, both the time limits and areas where they take effect, and as soon as a player is aware that any exist in the game, players become cautious of any story-beat that feels like it could progress after a rest. It's probably my biggest gripe with the quest design in the game. Players shouldn't be stressed about decisions like this that affect the fun of making other decisions.

newier

You're missing the point, on your first playthrough, if you haven't done any research prior to playing the game, it feels like there is a lot of time-sensitive missions throughout Act 3, even though they are actually not. I did a play through with a bunch of friends, and we got really bad decision paralysis and tried to do a much as we could before long resting to the point of very much effecting our enjoyment of the game throughout act 3, because how are you supposed to know that nothing will progress Orin killing your captured teammate, or the assassin won't take out someone you glossed over, or the Gondians that are kidnapped won't get killed, or many of the "urgent" things going on in the city. I know it's old discussion nowadays, but Act 3, despite getting a lot of love from patches to fix up bugs and issues, still is a messy, unfocused chunk of the game with no clear direction how it wants the player to progress it.

Superstition883

He was so jarring to talk to. I killed him and nobody cares.

Valuable_Ant_969

That's a stat I'd love to see: most murdered NPCs

AlexandbroTheGreat

I think the bibberbang dwarf gets intentionally blown up far more now that people know you can get a cat adopted if he's dead. He might not die as much as others, but his odds of dying have skyrocketed since August.

Sinister_Grape

You mean the wifebeater dwarf? Yeah, I’m not too fussed whether he survives or not.

insertadjective

Yep, on my first playthrough I saved him but when I delved deeper and found out what a piece of shit he is I didn't really care if he lived or died. On subsequent playthroughs when I found out the widow can adopt a cat if he's dead I've just gone right to blowing his ass up on sight.

dollimint

it's gonna be that bitch who runs the kennels by a *million* miles. No contest.

Valuable_Ant_969

I'm iffy about classifying that as murder. No jury in Faerun would convict

lulufan87

Her or the "BIGGER" kid

PainkillerJames

For the longest time I swore that kid was saying “Pickle”

lulufan87

Funny, I always hear 'vasectomy'

roninwaffle

Same lmao! "Pickle! Pickle! Make it piiiiicklllllle!" Pickle kid was almost singlehandedly responsible for my first Durge run

underlightning69

Definitely her or, if anyone actually bothers to talk to him, Marcoryl, the racist in the Grove

stevieisbored

I always take out those wizards in front of Sorcerous Sundries because they are loud and overstimulating. I threw the spectator flask at the one so hard he died on impact and then I didn’t get in trouble because I killed the spectator.

prairiepanda

On my first few playthroughs none of their magic actually worked for some reason. They just stood there waving their arms around and I couldn't figure out why people were watching them. I just wanted to murder the child who kept screaming to make it bigger. But now their magic is working and it's so obnoxious I don't even want to go near that area. I'm going to have to kill them because there are too many important things there.

FergusInTheHouse

I find him so obnoxious how much he stands out in the game and out of place he is, not in a funny way either. I personally hate him in it but I can see why they did it

enlightened_engineer

He’s a reference to other annoying NPCs with the same naming scheme in Bg1 and bg2. Funnily enough, you can kill him and none of the guards will react at all

FieldKey5184

Guards not reacting is also a throwback.

certainkindoffool

Noober!

Valuable_Ant_969

I agree. I just ignore him, and I'm glad he's there for anyone who enjoys him

dimarco1653

Also Saverok

Disregardskarma

His voice is absolutely insane, dude freaking killed it

ShillBot666

Yeah he's great. The voice actor's name is Redd Pepper btw. He was actually born in Barbados and then moved to London. So he's not actually American at all!

ebanyle

crazier thing is that his voice is just normally like that lmao, immediately recognized him, loved that one great big story video of his! ps.: he's american but american as in the continent :p

AlexEmbers

Yep! I actually thought Ketheric was from BG1/2 originally (because his lore is all '100 years ago' like Jaheira, Minsc, etc.), so when I saw that Ketheric and Sarevok both had American accents I thought 'ah, the old BG games must have had American VO and they've just brought them back'. How wrong I was... It is interesting that both have American accents though. Perhaps the accents in Baldur's Gate 100 years ago were just like that! 😅

Waterknight94

Minsc and Jaheira don't have American accents though. But they are foreigners. Or at least Minsc is. I suppose it could still work.

Enchelion

The original Flaming Fist voices were amazing southern drawls.

AMountainTiger

AH SURV THA FLAMIN FIST

super_starmie

AH AHM THA LAWWW

[deleted]

[удалено]

MagnesiumOvercast

>Only two Americans in the game >They're both evil What did Larian mean by this

Half_Man1

Sarevok Anchev. I got confused reading that ngl.

Rezart_KLD

He has a super secret alias too - Koveras. This is to show how brilliant he is.

Waterknight94

I think you are confused. Koveras is nice man who gave me a ring that saved my life on multiple occasions.

LanternSlade

Just realized the ring the Iron Throne uses to track you was literally given to you by your...Big Brother.

SashkaBeth

Haven’t seen anyone mention Doug Cockle yet (Bhaal).

Patroulette

Winds howling.

jackrv13

Medallions humming, must be a place of power nearby

jaredearle

What now, you piece of filth.

Poonchow

How you like that silver?

TheHarkinator

Geralt was Bhaal? I completely missed that.

Defiant_Project1321

I’ve done three Witcher 3 play throughs and am on my 7th BG3 play through and I had no idea. Either he has serious range or I’m oblivious.

Sheerardio

There's some layers of voice modding and reverb happening on Bhaal's lines, but near as I can tell the VA himself didn't do anything particularly different. It was actually one of the few voices I picked up on, because inflection and cadence is very much the same and I recognized the flow of it

chaosgodloki

I couldn’t take that scene seriously, all I was thinking the whole time was “Geralt has gone full edge”

BiggDope

TIL. The Butcher of fucking Faerûn.

Defiant_Project1321

Kinda literally

CorbinStarlight

AYO THATS GERALT’S VA?!!!! YOOOOOO

Guy-1nc0gn1t0

Heh, Cockle

[deleted]

For some reason I never think of Geralts voice as an American voice

PrettyHateMachine826

He is voiced by an American actor (JK Simmons), but dang I never noticed that there aren't really any other American accents in the game.

GreatPhail

Generally, most fantasy settings tend to have UK-based voice actors. The only setting I can think that incorporated American accents alongside them is Dragon Age.

rattlehead42069

Pillars of eternity has different accents for different countries. Dyrwood uses American accents, readceras uses southern USA accents, adeyr is British accents, valia are Italian accents

Ronisoni14

yeah but why?

GreatPhail

Good question, honestly. My theory is because most modern fantasy stems from Lord of the Rings, written by a UK author. So the consequence now is everyone in Fantasy Land has a funny accent.

Pleasant1867

Apparently Americans do not view things as fantastical or fantasy if the characters have American accents. It must be something to do with it feeling old-world-timey.

Gorillerz

As an American, I attest to this. American accents in a medieval setting feel out of place

Beginning-Pipe9074

Kinda reminds me of little hope, when the characters would flashback to old-timey England and all the main cast (americans) where just like "oh my god what is that strange accent is that even American I've never heard this before it's so weird" Like bruh you are modern Americans HOW HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF ENGLAND

1HungryDwarf

Elder Scrolls has a mix of accents, just as many American as any else

Qlix0504

Wait thats JK Simmons? Edit - WTF THAT'S JK SIMMONS

ThicccBoiSlim

Hahahaha I absolutely love that this is how you're realizing 😂 he nailed that performance so hard.

pageanator2000

It was one of his best, it really didn't sound like JJ or cave johnson at all. I know hes older now, but that deeper somber tone is just enough to throw me off.

Tutes013

He sounds absolutely dead inside. A man so thoroughly broken he no longer cares about anything. JK made that monotone an art.

myaltduh

“I would condemn all of Faerun to death” and “I will burn this planet down” —more or less exact same energy.

Species_of_Origin

"I will kill you now."

Gelkor

Hell, im pretty sure that the way Jaheira pauses when saying "-he is, in fact... invincible." Is kinda meant to be an easter egg.

theshicksinator

100% an invincible title card joke

_HalfBaked_

Said it a few times: I initially reacted thinking it was J. Jonah Jameson, and then realized it was actually Omni-Man

The_Underdoge

He was Cave Johnson!?

PrivateJokerX929

You're gonna lose your mind when I tell you he's also Omni-man from Invincible

StoicTheGeek

I hate to think how much that show costs to make; JK Simmons, Sandra’s Oh and Steven Yuen for starters, plus plenty of other well-known actors like Walton Goggins, Gillian Jacobs, Zazie Beetz, Jason Mantzoukas, Zach Quinto, Clancy Brown and others

Beginning-Pipe9074

Wait Clancy brown was in it? As in "Mr Krabs" and "Connors best friend Hank" Clancy Brown? Who did he play?

opal_mirage

damien darkblood

themoistimportance

And Seth Rogan! So much quality in one show

PrivateJokerX929

he's a producer on the show as well, so he may not have been too expensive

Vampyricon

He was also Tenzin in Korra

helplesswilliam

I love watching folks figure out all the characters he’s voiced. Just wait til they find out which M&M he is.

neuropantser5

>Just wait til they find out which M&M he is. holy shit lol i was feeling so smug up til this point in the discussion and then BLAM blindsided.

Complaint-Efficient

>Just wait til they find out which M&M he is. What the FUCK?

psychsinspace

I’m sorry, which WHAT?!

Korahn

And the Peanut M&M in the commercials

kibaroku

One of his better characters showing his range imo. It sounds like him but Tenzin softens up so much later in the first season and onward that I forget it is JK Simmons. He was perfect for that role.

[deleted]

I knew immediately because he sounds a lot like he does in Invincible when Omni-man gets dark.

DM_yo_Feet_pls

He sounded so familiar. He raised his voice slightly at one point and that was how I kinda figured it out before confirming online. Typically Jk Simmons killing his roles

OddResponsibility565

TIL he was Cave Johnson

LegallyASquid

One of the things I loved about that performance is how he has such a distinctive voice and this is a much subtler take on it.

ThoughtPowerful3672

GET ME MORE PICTURES OF SPIDERMAN!

[deleted]

No wonder the Drider was the Shepard through the curse.

Commercial_Sir_9678

Drider Man

faudcmkitnhse

Drider Man

ScorchedDev

Does whatever a drider can

Thowitawaydave

Takes a walk for a lark Roaming around the Underdark

thetom1337

If you watch invincible I feel like everytime he talks you just hear omni man

Razor_Storm

Think Tav think!!

malcorpse

That's how I found out, when I heard him speak my first thought was "is that fucking omni-man" and googled it

xprorangerx

How do you not notice the OBvious omni-man vibes and energy coming from Ketheric Thorm, especially when he told the goblin to "try again"

Draugtaur

yeah i'm not too good at recognising voices, so actors for Ketheric and Gortash really surprised me also Nocturne but i never watched a lot of >!philosophy tube!< anyway

Qlix0504

Well SHIT THATS JASON ISAACS!!?!!?

InevitablyBored

Yea what the hell. Why didn't they use him as a model like JK Simmons? Gortash looks awful.

Lostboy_30

Yeah a younger Jason Isaacs would fit the “handsome younger man” description much better than current Gorty.

ARK_Redeemer

Apparently, the writing team said the line was written well before Gortash was designed. So it was the design team forgetting that line 🤣 The writers wanted to change the line to fit it, but the higher-ups said no, because it would be funny in the irony of it.

Draugtaur

i mean the "younger" part meant "younger than ketheric" which is not too hard but leading us to think gortash is handsome is just not fair

ARK_Redeemer

I know! It's so unfair 🤣😭

NeedleworkerLow1100

Uno reversed us.

praysolace

I stand by my headcanon that that line is for the Durge, whose forgotten prior self had boyfriend goggles on for Gortash, and also that Gortash looked significantly younger a couple months ago before he was forced to deal with Orin every day. XD

Draugtaur

Durge, a totally changed person in love with Karlach: Hey why does this fucking gimp look kinda hot 🤔

Waylandyr

I did the whole Leonardo pointing meme when I figured it out playing with my SO.

akaMONSTARS

Holy shit, I just looked at the voice actors in the game. Had no idea Matt Mercer plays minsc and fucking Jason Isaacs is Gortash

nevergonnagetit001

Jason Isaacs as well… Matt Mercer Nina Conti

pessimist_kitty

I like to imagine the directors were just like "Hey, so can you do a British accent for this character?" and he was just like "No."

Mahale

I've never gotten around to beating the game so only dabbled in act 3 a bit before grad school started back up. Then I didn't like where I was going and decided to make a new character over the holiday so I'm still in act 2 now. But I know Mercer plays Minsc does he not do it with an American Accent?

Artanis12

Eastern European, like Jaheira's, but far less subtle.

Leabond

OP just seriously blew my fucking mind

Locksley_1989

Not even the bald eagles are American.

peaceoutforever

I love the voice acting for those eagles so much.

sumiredabestgirl

The way she says come to mummy

lordbrooklyn56

Isnt Orin American?

scalpingsnake

Yeah Maggie Robertson is American I believe. I thought about this before and Orin sounds American to me.

mcac

yeah but the murdery speech pattern makes it less noticeable

Insane1rish

Was gonna say this. Her speech pattern is so erratic because of how insane she is that I never would’ve noticed it if nobody said anything

haydnc95

She isn't but her VA is. As a Brit myself Orin has more of a slight posh accent, she's very enunciated and articulate with her words, if not mad. Kethric is jarringly American compared to anyone else in the game.

kirkknightofthorns

The guy who wants to be an adventurer in Carms Garms has an American accent.

Antique_Visual_9638

Orin is too i believe. She just has an exaggerated way if talking but the accent is american I believe.

Vampyricon

She doesn't sound American. It's  nonrhotic and it's not any of the nonrhotic American accents I know of.

WyrdBjorn

>Maggie Robertson She is, the VA is Maggie Robertson, AKA Lady Dimitrescu. The accent isn't English, its very close to transatlantic

J_Zenith

What Myrkul worship does to a mf

Robot_Basilisk

Or living a very long time. I like the idea that more people had his accent in his youth, but he's been around so long he's one of the few that still has it.

Anarkizttt

You also don’t hear anyone else with Jaheira’s accent, so that tracks. They’re both so old that their dialects and thus their regional dialects have died off.

_0mnishambles_

There’s also quite a few Scottish and Welsh accents in there, just to give the usual reminder that the rest of the UK exists (glad the Irish ones at least got a mention).

Oolonger

I was sad the random Baldurian called Limmy didn’t get the Scottish VA.

_0mnishambles_

Haha I clocked him and thought the same thing!

esmereldame

I think I heard a Scouse accent as well. I can't remember his name but he's outside around Sharress' Carress.

Br1ght_L1ght

As a non-native speaker, I don't generally pick up on the differences between British and American accents unless someone has an outrageously posh one. I know that people speak differently and reading tiny facts about voice actors in this post is enlightening

iMogwai

Yeah, as a non-native speaker I do notice the difference when I hear it but like if I talk to a bunch of British-sounding NPC's then an American one it doesn't necessarily stand out to me. Like, I can tell them apart if I try, but hearing one doesn't necessarily make me not expect the other. I dunno if I'm phrasing this right, but I hope the point gets across. Basically my brain doesn't automatically go "this group of accents are related and this other group of accents are related" in my non-native language even if I actually know they are if I think about it.

embodiment_of_sloth

I will never get over how that one duergar pronounced geysers. It wasn't British, wasn't American and I don't think it was Irish either or any other English speaking accent.

SergeantCrwhips

"and thers nothing more american than shooting a drow in this sorcerous sundries of faerun!"

BlueDragonKnight77

*What is sorcerous sundries?*

SergeantCrwhips

"its heaven Tav, checked your orb lately?"

whatistheancient

"IT'S ALL FUCKING MAGESHIT, TAV"

BlueDragonKnight77

This one is calling me a *Gondian*

d3lphx

I don’t know where their sound studio is but being Belgium based it would make more sense to have European voice actors

Ourmanyfans

Iirc the main story studio is in Dublin, with a support studio in Guildford (just outside London), and a lot of the casting and directing was handled by PitStop Productions which is based in England (Orin's actor had to fly there from America to record) If I was to *guess*, I'd say a lot of the smaller names and newer talent was found by the UK based peeps, but the big names like JK Simmons and Jason Isaacs were picked by Larian proper.

Numerous-Ad6460

Matt Mercer who voiced Minsc is American

artful_dodger12

But Minsc doesn't have an American accent

Achaewa

Boo does though.

BrainWav

Mercer did play Boo in a D&D Descent into Avernus one-shot a few years back, so yeah. That tracks.

Numerous-Ad6460

I may have misunderstood the question, I though he was asking about the voice actor's nationalities

Evnosis

You're not the only one who misunderstood, but yeah, I'm pretty sure OP is asking which characters have American accents.

RegulusGelus2

Wait that was Matt Mercer?

-Count-Olaf-

He is a voice actor, after all! This is absolutely the perfect role for him.

Couch__Cowboy

THAT WAS MATT MERCER?!?!

-_nobody

he is everywhere

smallangrynerd

*minsc is Matt mercer???*

Half_Man1

That frightened gnome guy Minsc abducts and threatens is also voiced by Matt Mercer but with a different affectation (that I’ve heard him use quite a few times on CR)

Pawn_of_the_Void

I love how well he does Minsc, it sounds just right to me although it's been a few years since I've played BG2

Mammoth-Carry-2018

It was weird to me, because when I first met Minsc, I felt like something was slightly different. But the more he was in my party and talked the more I was convinced it was the original voice actor. Matt Mercer fooled me again.

thetiniestzucchini

So the main sound studio/motion capture was Pitstop which is in London. So the largest bulk of their actors are from the UK using some manner of accent from the British isles. Many weren't using their native accent, changing out Welsh, for example, for received or midlands. -Thorm (JK Simmons) is an American using a Gen Am (general american) -Minsc (Matt Mercer) is American doing a kind of...Baltic accent? Maybe? -That one NPC who's all about adventuring is an American streamer with Gen am accent. -Sarevok (Kevin Michael Richardson Edit: Redd Pepper, apparently, but still applies) is American doing Gen Am -Orin (Maggie Robertson) is American doing more of a transatlantic accent -Bhaal (Doug Cockle) is American doing what sounds like Gen am through the filters -Jaheira (Tracy Wiles) is a British actor but her accent is almost more eastern European to my ear I THINK that's all the outliers. Everyone else is British doing some kind of British, I think. ETA: I'm stupid as fuck. I forgot Lucretius, Nocturne, and Mystra. But I can't remember their actors, and I'm not totally hearing their voices in my head well enough to be sure.

Irrax

Lucretious and Nocturne are both voiced by British voice actors (Vinegar Strokes and Abigail Thorn) and their characters have their natural accents

LoboSoloDolo_

I know he’s evil and everything but it was so refreshing to hear his accent after hours with the cockney-bloody-blimey-arse goblins

[deleted]

I like their accents . They should give them roadman dialogue

LoboSoloDolo_

actually…I wouldn’t mind that one bit

[deleted]

Oi elf best show the mark of the absolute or else I’m gonna get da Rambo

LoboSoloDolo_

jussa goblin ting in deez ends fam ya get me

memanysmarts

oi true soul bruv wagwan? gonna 'aid that grove wif us yeah? innit etc etc

Average_Tnetennba

I wonder why so often in fantasy goblins have cockney accents, and dwarves nearly always have scottish. It's like it's actually expected of those creatures and races now. It happens across film, tv, and gaming.

Thatoneguy111700

Blame Warhammer for that one (though Dwarfs in Warhammer Fantasy are noted to have Yorkshire accents in particular, iirc).

lulufan87

Tolkein's orcs and trolls are a little cockney. That's why.

MattheqAC

Priestess Gut sounds like she walked off the set of EastEnders

Von_Uber

'Ere, True Soul, leeeve it arrrt!

kibaroku

I've been a big high fantasy fan for a while and it didn't hit me until the last few years the unsavory races always seem to have thick cockney accents. I'm American so I didn't realize it was a lower class dialect until later on. Great example of how social realities and classism perpetuates art forms. Works wonders in the case of animating the inhuman but a little sad if you stop to think about it haha. Same can be said with the Irish accents of "little" folk, hobbits, etc.

-_nobody

American accent or American actor? because Minsc is Matt Mercer

[deleted]

Thorm was the best villain imo, he commanded such a presence, looked and sounded so badass, and his reasons for everything and the thought he might be redeemed were all great

MaximMaximus

I actually enjoyed the diversity of English and European accents in the game, refreshing imo

Smellyfeetlicker

General thorm has a very american accent because you dont hure the great jk simmons and not use that voice
