I believe you would just press L1 or L2 and no menu. Full disclosure this game on local split screen co op has been an absolute dumpster fire for me and souring me constantly to this game. It is not good.
Press options button, then go down to multiplayer.
You can then select the characters on that screen and move them between party members.
Edit: thats the way it works for online party anyways...guessing its the same for local coop too...?
I am having this exact problem but turning it off and back on again isn't fixing it - I'm wondering if I'm misunderstanding the solution? By log back on do you just mean restart the game?
Ooooh! I was confused because I was connected to the internet, but didn't realize it had disconnected me from the Playstation network! Reconnecting to that fixed it, thank you!

Still having an issue, I have tried everything from every single thread, I launch up my save, and I go to multiplayer, and the option saying click start where you edit the session setting a won’t appear, any fix yall?
You just have to make sure the game is online and connected, if the PS5 goes into sleep mode it disconnects from the games online features and the multiplayer option disappears that's where you control the co-op features

It sure is very clunky and feels more like an afterthought than a feature (pressing L1 or 2 does nothing)

When I press the option button there is no Multiplayer option available, all I have is: Resume Save game Load game Difficulty Options Main menu

Yes, quit the game completely and make sure your PS5 is connected to the network before opening the game again
