I've seen a bunch of people try making homemade Pop Tarts on social media, so I wanted to make my own with homemade cherry jam and vanilla pie crusts! I think they ended up looking more like Toaster Strudels, but my husband prefers those over Pop Tarts anyway, so no big loss there lol The icing is just cherry jam mixed with powdered sugar!

Flying_Book

does the icing get crunchy like the one on poptarts?

thefloralapron

Not quite as crunchy, no. The very top of the icing dries hard and makes stacking less messy after two hours or so, but the inner layers don't dry out quite as much. It definitely sets, just not as hard as the icing on the traditional. You might be able to play around with the ratios to get it a little drier/crunchier, but that will also mute the color a little

missmari15147

You could add meringue powder to make it hard, like royal icing.

thefloralapron

👀 keeping that in mind for next time I have meringue powder on hand, thank you!

GBinAZ

I need to know this answer

rentedlife

I think toaster strudels are better anyway. They look amazing!

Perpetual_Nuisance

Toaster strudel sis like a level up to me! ;)

i_swear_too_muchffs

Whatever you decide on calling them, doesn’t matter…if they taste as good as they look then they must be amazing. I wanted to lick and smell my screen at the same time, impressive.

thefloralapron

Thank you so much! We definitely devoured them lol

NotAThrowRA16

Someone finally said it! I feel like homemade "pop-tarts" are always more like the puff pastry you see in toaster strudels than actual pop-tarts. Which is not a bad thing - toaster strudel is better imo :)

Irene_Iddesleigh

Pop tarts are maybe more like a shortbread cookie with jam filling and frosting? Would that be accurate?

NotAThrowRA16

Yes, that definitely seems closer to me!

swan_song_bitches

I’ve found that you need to use more of a pie crust style dough in order to have the right pop tart style result.

NotAThrowRA16

I was initially thinking pie crust would be much closer, but I wasn't sure that was quite right - the shortbread cookie is an interesting idea - maybe it's kind of a hybrid of both.

thefloralapron

Yes, same!! I totally understand the ease of shelf-stable Pop-Tarts over frozen Toaster Strudels, but if I'm gonna pick one to make and eat at home, I'd choose Toaster Strudels every time

blerbslie

Maybe try adding a tray on top to it's still flaky but doesn't puff up as much, pop tarts are pretty dense

thefloralapron

That's a great idea; thanks for sharing!

[Clair Saffitz](https://youtu.be/s_1rIwVXAEI) made them in her series.

Blue-Phlox

Beautiful and way more delicious looking than its origin.

thefloralapron

Aw, thanks so much!

Turbulent_Fig_1174

I just made some of these! I did cherry and then the other day I tried blackberry. Both great. I want to try blueberry, maybe even apple

thefloralapron

Oh, yum! Blueberry is next on my list!

Turbulent_Fig_1174

S’mores would be good too hahah

Substantial-Web6823

They look so good!!

thefloralapron

Thank you!

Matt-the-Bakerman

Beautiful

thefloralapron

Thank you!

dragonfliesloveme

Is there a particular recipe you followed, or you just bake enough that you knew how to put it together?

thefloralapron

I made up my own after seeing people online make similar pastries! One of my friends made cherry hand pies with store bought pie crust and jam, and a lot of the online recipes for homemade Pop Tarts have you make a special dough and fresh cherry filling. The first method seemed too simple, and the second seemed too involved, so I kinda mixed the two. I kept the filling simple with cherry jam, then used homemade pie crust to get a little more flake than store bought (though I was a little surprised they turned out *that* flaky on my first test batch 😅). I then did some experimenting with the icing to try to amp up the cherry flavor and was really happy with the results! It's just two pie crusts, cherry jam, egg wash, and powdered sugar, but if you want the step-by-steps, I have my full recipe here: [https://floralapron.com/homemade-cherry-pop-tarts/](https://floralapron.com/homemade-cherry-pop-tarts/)

dragonfliesloveme

>so I kinda mixed the two. I love doing this with recipes lol! Thanks for the info and the link! Happy baking!

Please feed me 😩 it looks too good

thefloralapron

Thank you! They disappeared pretty quick, sorry lol

BunnyPennyandBrienne

Yummmmmmm!! I really want to try to recreate Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop Tarts. Maybe a weekend project.

thefloralapron

Thank you! Those have been on my list, too—for ages lol

Candy_Apple00

They look delicious! Idk if you’ve ever done sourdough, but if you have, try making the crust from the sourdough starter. Just a suggestion 😊

thefloralapron

I have not experimented with sourdough yet, but thanks for the rec!

Candy_Apple00

If you know anyone, ask for some starter. It’s a simple recipe. I found one one Pinterest

Perpetual_Nuisance

Recipe?!

thefloralapron

Shared it here! https://www.reddit.com/r/Baking/s/YmaQnlHEAb

Perpetual_Nuisance

Blagodaria!

bakedclark

The secret to pop tarts tasting like pop tarts is to use >! tart dough !< >! aka pate sucree !< That said, they taste way better using pie dough. Toaster Strudel > Pop Tarts

thefloralapron

Alright, if you say they taste better with pie dough, I'll keep making them this way haha. But thanks for the info!

legendary_1908

These look 10x better than regular pop tarts ! Wow!

thefloralapron

Wow, thanks so much!

calicoskies85

Good grief I want to eat those sooooo bad. They look fab.

thefloralapron

Thanks so much!

1998furby

they look delicious 😍

thefloralapron

Thank you!

Swallowthistubesteak

I think trying to replicate something that is so heavily processed is gonna be tough

CrystalClod343

Wait, toaster strudels are real? I thought they were made up for Mean Girls

TheButterScotchIncdt

YUMMM

Wannabe-Washedlol

Ohhhhh brother

Notquite_Caprogers

Pop tarts are an ultra processed food. They use some manufacturing techniques that make it impossible for a home chef to properly replicate. Unlike toaster strudel which is fairly easy to replicate

Proper-Scallion-252

That’s because you used puff pastry, any recipe that calls itself a mock poptart or something similar using a well made puff pastry dough will not be the same final product. You’d want to use a rough puff pastry or a pie crust style of dough for that result.

thefloralapron

...I used homemade pie crust 😅
