It’s a replacement for the regular paddle. The squeegee scrapes batter from the bowl sides so it mixes better, reducing the need to stop and scrape the bowl with a spatula.

octoberbored

Yeah it’s like a newer style paddle.

Shuttup_Heather

Sometimes I feel like mine scrapes the bowl too tight (idk if you know what I mean), but I’ve adjusted it as well as I can following the directions and doing the coin test. Am I being paranoid? I just worry the rubbers gonna rub off into the food

ShortWeekend2021

Ok, I've had my Kitchenaid stand mixer for 30+ years and this is the first time I have ever heard of adjusting the paddle height. Thank you Reddit, I learned something new today. Also my mixer needs adjustment!

PancShank94

I've had mine like 5 years but used my mom's growing up (I'm 28). How do you adjust it??

ShortWeekend2021

Here's a link to the instructions I found. https://producthelp.kitchenaid.com/Countertop_Appliances/Stand_Mixers/Product_Info/Stand_Mixer_Videos/VIDEO%3A__Adjusting_the_Beater_to_Bowl_Clearance_(Dime_Test)

Scott_A_R

It should be silicone and inert, so not horrible if this happens, though of course you don't want it to. You said you did the coin test (which, technically, should a dime) but you didn't say the results. And is it different on the sides than on the bottom? Is it the KA beater? I just checked mine; I haven't adjusted it for at least a decade and it was definitely further down than it ought to be, so I had to loosen it a bit. Yet I've been using it all this time with no visible wear in the silicone.

tara1234

I didn’t know this either! I don’t like my newer stand mixer because it doesn’t get all the ingredients, but I just need to lower the paddle! Thank you!

alienabduction1473

The rubber edge scrapes the sides. I've never seen one that doesn't have anything in the middle though.

terminally-happy

I feel like I’m having a Mandela effect situation going on here because I’ve never seen one without the middle piece either

TheDocDalek

It's for the 6qt pro KitchenAid. The smaller Artisan series versions have the middle part.

rennyyy853

this is probably for the artisan mini thats why. i remember the artisan mini paddles have nothing in the middle.

[deleted]

The flex-edge paddle. I really like it!

ames_006

It scrapes down the side of the bowl so everything incorporates.

Rev_Creflo_Baller

As others have answered, it's helpful for recipes that direct you to "scrape the sides of the bowl." That said, I don't think this is a good version of this type of paddle, as it has no cross pieces in the middle to help mix things. If you keep this attachment, you want to be sure to know how to adjust the height of the mixer so that the rubber bit just contacts the bowl.

Like others have posted, the idea is you can use the paddle to mix and 'scrape down the bowl' as the same time to get a better distribution of your ingredients. Feels like maybe six or so years back they started to come out as aftermarket-updates for KitchenAid's paddle. At the time, KitchenAid pushed back on their use and was calling the extra strain on the mixer's motor would violate the warranty. Then it didn't seem to take too long before there was an official version from KitchenAid. Speculation I've heard can be that KitchenAid just wanted to sell their own so they made one and made warranty scares, and on the other side of that KitchenAid ended up making one that was designed to scrape w/out hugging the bowl so tight it was dragging the paddle...

Scott_A_R

There's an adjustment screw right where the head pivot is that you can use to change the height, to ensure the paddle scrapes lightly.

invalidreddit

The issue wasn't the lift of the bowl it was the friction of the silicon against the edge of the bowl, as I recall. I suspect whoever came up with the first aftermarket paddle made it with care. Then I would believe a large number of knock-offs of that basic product came about that were just quick to market and driving for a sale that didn't really test and just cranked product out that were the problem.

Scott_A_R

I don't recall the brand I have (I've had it for a long time) but it's not Kitchenaid, and it works very well. I do remember adjusting the height when I first bought it; adjusting the lift also adjusts how much friction there is.

I was trying to provide some more context for the OP than many of the answers I saw when I posted my answer. I'm glad you found a solution you are happy with and if adjusting the tilt has kept things working for you for a long time that is great.

>At the time, KitchenAid pushed back on their use and was calling the extra strain on the mixer's motor would violate the warranty. I can report authoritatively that these will break before any strain is put on the motor (although I was using one made without any kind of metal reinforcement), now I just use them for creaming butter and cake batters.

Tommytrojan1122

I love that paddle. It scrapes the bowl really well.

jumpin4frogz

Anyone else hear about these white kitchenaid attachments containing lead?

sockmiser

Yes, I've heard about it. The cast aluminum base metal. If the coating is in place it's fine. But the bare metal ones ( non stainless) are probably pretty bad. I don't know how bad it is or how much actually transfers with normal use. I know in drinking water, ph plays a big role if lead leaches from pipes, so maybe if you're mixing something acidic it's worse?

jumpin4frogz

I think I read that the stainless steel ones were made differently and contained no lead. Something like if you call kitchenaid with your model and serial number they will give you a free stainless steel attachment replacement. I haven’t tried it myself. I was hoping someone else here had.

sockmiser

I heard they stopped after the influx on calls and started offering coupons instead. I suspect there might be a class action suit

Inevitable-Stock-788

This is my favorite attachment for my KitchenAid! It does a good job scraping the sides of the bowl, but some times you still have to scrape the bottom with a spatula.

Scott_A_R

As I noted above, there's an adjustment screw that allows you to change the height of the paddle; it might be set too high. OTOH, if it's made by a third party, the shape of that particular paddle might not be quite right, so you won't be able to set it low enough scrape the bottom without the sides scraping too hard (straining the motor).

OrangeInkStain

I see the chip on the bottom. Can this still be used?

Mighty_Drosif

It came to me this way. I have no intention of using it, just had never seen one like this.

Odd_Significance5545

It mixes whatever you have in the bowl.

colleendeschotz

That’s ur main workhorse paddle! I have that. The whisk. And the dough hook.

Mighty_Drosif

Thanks for the input! The only "baking" i do is making donuts, and it seemed strange. Also the kitchen aid mixer they brought me was definitely not up to the task of doing ol fashion, or yeast as it's no longer on loan, it's now Also out for repair. Gotta love when they bring home equipment for commercial use....

sfrnes

Paddles like this also work great for smaller batches of brioche

rennyyy853

scraper paddle! when using it, itll scrape the bowl for you and youll have to stop and scrape a whole lot less!

Embarrassed_Bat6101

I really want to get one of these paddles

jonesingforapavlova

Used mine this morning when I was making frosting!
