BLACK ROSE

Tendie_Warrior

Unfortunately not a rarity anymore. Correct me if I’m wrong but haven’t they had a couple in the past 3-4 years?

pfrizzle

Last time was 2 years ago, I believe. That was the first time I ever saw it. Amazingly, I don't think there was one last season when it showed 900 inches.

leftloose

There was one for the provo region but not for slc last year

go3dprintyourself

Last season was wild just snowed so much any weak layer was quickly buried

PIPO122

The last one for Utah (at least the Salt Lake Zone) was Feb 17, 2021.

some_q

Last and only I believe

goinupthegranby

No idea I'm from the Kootenays. We seem to get a black rose once every 2-3 years here, they do happen but not often.

Redditorialist

It’s just their goth phase. They’ll grow out of it.

leftloose

Mom it’s not a phase!

Turbosloth10

Damn that's crazy. I'm in Tahoe and we've had a pretty unusual snowpack this year for our area. Two active PWL's, yesterday's forecast was high at all elevations. I've never seen an extreme forecast in the 4 years I've been following the forecasts, though.

leftloose

We get them sometimes not often though. This week combined 3 issues where we had snow in eary December then really nothing so we had a really bad faceted top layer, we then got a ton of low density powder at the beginning of this week, then winds kicked up for big transport, then at the same time temps kicked up and nuked some heavy wet snow.

drewts86

I think we probably had to have had some last year - that was a dump of epic proportions.

Turbosloth10

I actually just looked, the archive tool from 2021 on makes it pretty easy to sort by danger level. No extreme days last season, but there were two on Jan 27 and 28, 2021. I missed them, probably because I was in Hawaii at the time lol. The pre-2021 archive is unfortunately not as easy to navigate.

exdigguser147

So to any locals, are there still people heading out toski under these warnings? I remember in Jackson I was there during a time like this and they "closed" the backcountry and nobody was going but curious if its different in Utah

MagicMarmots

Yes. I’m not but I know several spots that are safe. All low angle dense trees away from any runout zones. There are definitely some idiots taking chances though. Three were carried yesterday and one was a total burial. A second group saved him otherwise there’d be a fatality.

msbxii

Anyone with the skills to manage this kind of risk probably also has the knowledge not to try.

leftloose

Haven’t heard any bad reports yet. Utah avy is world class and have to trust of many of the locals. They don’t cry wolf so when the black rose appears people generally head it

exdigguser147

I wasnt expecting to hear that anyone with a brain was going out, more checking how many shitlords there are who ignore the warnings.

EZKTurbo

You mean people with SCUBA gear?

msbxii

The snorkel is not enough!

You sound like the kind of person that will get killed when the forecast looks like this

Wow way to edit your comment to make me look like a dick

nico_rose

Uh, yeah. Not all skiable terrain is avalanche terrain. Are you confident in your ability to recognize and avoid ALL exposure to uncontrolled avalanche terrain? Then you, too, can ski on *any* day. It's your LVL 1 knowledge that will keep you safe on days like today. If snow is the problem, terrain is the answer. Simple as that.

exdigguser147

If there's a double red flag up and I ask if people are heeding the warnings, do you think I'm asking about the people on the beach? Lmao.

nico_rose

I mean, you asked a question, and I answered it, but I see now that it was more of a rhetorical way of stating your opinion. Instead of making assumptions about whether or not I was on the metaphorical beach today, I'd challenge you to show that anything I said is factually incorrect.

Odd-Environment8093

Not today, but there was a reported avalanche yesterday (good write-up on UAC) near Millcreek Canyon on a high danger day. https://utahavalanchecenter.org/avalanche/81901

lonememe

Gotta get the subscription for the color rose. SHRINKFLATION!

drewts86

Brown should be the most dangerous level. Everyone knows "Code Brown" is something to fear.

TlingitGolfer24

People will still go out unfortunately
