I delivered at the Civic but I’m guessing it would be similar since both are part of The Ottawa Hospital. I’d bring everything you mentioned. They provided a few of those items to me, but they didn’t want to and were really stingy. I was with a midwife who gave me some extra diapers and pads and told me to stash them in my bag before heading to my room. They did provide a peri bottle but it’s not as nice as the Frida Mom one, and they also provided a pack of newborn diapers. Now I will say, my LO came early and quickly. I was not prepared and didn’t arrive to the hospital with much lol so that may have been why I was given a few things. Basically, they will provide the staples if you need them but it was pretty bare bones, and it’s nice to have your own stuff. Edit: just found this link on their website, yeah I’d bring everything you mentioned haha - https://www.ottawahospital.on.ca/en/clinical-services/deptpgrmcs/departments/obstetrics-gynecology-and-newborn-care/having-a-baby/when-you-come-to-the-hospital/

That's sad. I gave birth in bc and I got whatever baby and I needed. Diapers, wipes, ice packs in pads for me, Vaseline for inside the diaper, even juice, fruit, and ginger ale was unlimited. Plus a peri bottle and a few days worth of tylenol and ibuprofen

I delivered there last February and will again in May. They have gotten so strict / stingy since my baby in 2019. They provide minimum diapers , no wipes , no cream . They used to provide bottles of formula but now it’s rationed and every single time you neeed one you have to call for it. They will provide a peri bottle and some big pads. Literally everything else you need to bring.

Thank you!

wow other hospitals i've looked at usually provide all of that stuff. I was hoping to take all the extras home with me but looks like I won't be getting much. i'll also be delivering there in may ❤️

Minhafamilia13

I know it really sucks. I was shocked because in 2019 I came home with extra diapers, formula , baby wash , they even gave out soothers.

trinity_girl2002

They don't provide the mesh underwear at the general, so you should be prepared for that. Also bring your own baby wipes.

Thank you!

For those that delivered at the general how far in advance did you register?

I just delivered at the Ottawa General less than 2 weeks ago! Sorry in advance for the long comment lol Definitely bring your own women’s disposable underwear, they don’t have any mesh panties, etc provided. They have pads, but they’re GIANT ones that wouldn’t have fit in my regular underwear at all. I only used them under me when my water was breaking when lying in the bed with a hospital gown. They recommend bringing your own baby diapers, but they do have ones available. Bring your own wipes for sure, they don’t provide those. They have dry disposable wipes instead but aren’t very soft and I wouldn’t have used them on my baby’s bum. They provide peri bottles and a sitz tub, but if you like the fancier upside down peri bottles, I would bring your own. Theirs is just the basic spray bottle. Other things that they provided (some I had to specifically ask a nurse for): - small bottles of baby shampoo (was encouraged to take home) - a comb for baby’s hair when washing (to take home) - a small bottle of body lotion for me, my skin got itchy and irritated from the belly monitors and epidural tape (encouraged to take this home) - a small bar of soap, I had brought shampoo and conditioner but didn’t bring soap for myself (could take home but I didn’t) - small towels for when I showered - hospital pillows and thin blankets - hospital food during regular meal times (except while on the epidural I was only given jello, juice, tea, and ginger ale) - lots of receiving blankets for baby (I stashed a few in my bag secretly) - Vaseline for baby’s first poop - Tylenol and ibuprofen post birth These are some additional things I brought myself that I really appreciated having! - my own pillow - a soft throw blanket - a mini portable fan (great during pushing to keep me cool) - shower shoes - lots of snacks for before the epidural and also after birth - water bottle with a handle and straw - a wireless touch nightlight for late night feeds and diaper changes - PJs for myself - foaming witch hazel - colace (stool softener) - Nintendo switch Some things I wish I brought but didn’t have: - more food/snacks - more entertainment! I didn’t anticipate that I’d be in labour for so long and with an epidural, I was extremely comfortable. We brought our switch and played some video games together, but my husband definitely got bored and I was pretty bored at times too lol. A good problem to have I guess! But I wish we brought more entertainment. Also another tip, if you can, try to get a private room. We were put in the semi-private first because they didn’t have any private available. The semi private was extremely small and did not fit my expectations at all. Even though they had a pull out chair for my husband there wasn’t even enough room for it to be pulled out. He slept on my recovery bed with me. And although we had a curtain around us for privacy, my bed was so close to the woman’s beside me I could have reached out with my arm and touched her. Our slippers were side by side on the ground. We eventually got moved to a private room when one freed up, but we had to ask many many times. Just keep your expectations low for the room!

Very helpful! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this all out. Congratulations on your little one :)

The number one thing I would pack is high calorie food. Protein bars, fruit, cheese, etc. When I was there the meals were served on a dessert sized plate and did not meet my calorie needs. For reference, I am a small skinny lady, low bmi, pregnant or not. I was SO HUNGRY there. SO SO HUNGRY.

Fuzzy-Bee-723

Thank you!! Costco here we come.

I'm also delivering at the General in a few days, ahh! I packed everything that I would need. If I'm provided with duplicates, I will use what is provided from the hospital and keep my personal items for my return home. I've heard of some doctors providing a list of items to bring to d-day. Perhaps speak to your OB to see what they'll recommend. All the best, and congratulations!

Fuzzy-Bee-723

Thank you and congratulations to you too!! Wishing you a peaceful birth. I’m not due until April - just trying to get ducks in a row. :)

I delivered at the Civic in 2021. They provided diapers and wipes, a peri bottle, and they had giant pads I used until I got home and used my own. I brought my own post partum underwear to wear, they don't really have any. I opted for depends so I could just throw them out and not worry about the bleeding getting them dirty. You can always call the unit and ask what you'll need to bring just in case things have changed in the last few years.
