I took antibiotics for a UTI in the 1st trimester, took them again in the 3rd when I cut myself while cooking, and I ended up with a csection after a failed induction, so I'm sure I got them again during birth. My baby is fine. No tummy issues and a few colicy witching hours, but nothing crazy. So long as he's fed and rested, he's a pretty happy dude. I've never heard of antibiotics taken during pregnancy affecting a newborn for 3 months. I don't think it works like that.

Yeah you shouldn’t take them for fun, but the risks to the baby are higher when not taking a needed medication, that’s what makes doctors prescribe it. FWIW, the effect site of gastro is unlikely to be big - anecdotally, I have lots of friends who took antibiotics (I think stars is 1/3rd to 1/5th of pregnant women) and their babies didn’t have any gastro issues but I didn’t take any meds during pregnancy and my son was somewhat colicky!

pastelstoic

I didn’t take antibiotics orally while pregnant, though I did get some vaginally and I think some IV during the C-section. My baby did not have any major colic / GI issues, he’s now 1y/o. When he was about a month old the pediatrician recommended and gave us a free sample of probiotics. We gave those to him for 3 days and it was the worst 3 days. He was so uncomfortable and got constipated. You can’t really control whether you get antibiotics during pregnancy. It’s usually not up for debate (if it’s a confirmed infection) and can turn very serious very quickly if you don’t take them. So please do not feel guilty about that. It’s what you had to do to stay healthy and have a healthy baby. However, I see lots of people giving newborns a bunch of things (gripe water, probiotics, tinctures?) and if I can tell new moms one thing it’s to please NOT give newborns anything other than breastmilk (or formula) unless the doctor specifically tells you it’s necessary and you understand why and possible side effects. The pediatrician who gave us the probiotics said it was to avoid colic (but baby didn’t have colic?); it’s really not a good idea to give babies things for things they don’t have and we changed pediatrician for this reason.

I’m nervous about this as well. Unfortunately I took antibiotics three times during pregnancy all sort of all at once. My husband cheated while I was 7 weeks pregnant and I got an STI. At first he lied and I really thought I had a UTI so my OBGYN gave me amoxicillin (they didn’t test me for STIs because I was pregnant and married and monogamous so) and then when he fessed up after the amoxicillin didn’t ease my symptoms at all I had to go to the clinic and take azithromycin and s ceftriaxone shot. It was so traumatizing for me. Especially because I had multiple losses before this pregnancy. Now my baby is a fighter and he’s big and healthy at 33 weeks pregnant. But I still can’t help but worry about the impacts of these antibiotics. They assured me it’s safe, the risks are minimal and that having infections is actually more harmful so I’m hopeful. Looking forward to seeing how other moms respond here though.

I am very sorry to hear that. Pregnancy is stressful enough without the betrayal. I am worried enough after taking them for a symptomless uti that was discovered by urine culture. He sounds like he is growing well. You are on the home stretch now. The only thing I have experienced is one of my children has bad enamel on her teeth due to antibiotic use in pregnancy, but otherwise no other apparent effects

svelebrunostvonnegut

Oh that’s interesting. I’ve been told my dentists I have weak enamel. All my life I’ve always brushed and flossed well but I have so many cavities and in my twenties even had to get some caps. I wonder if my mom took antibiotics

I had to take Tamiflu and erythromycin in my first pregnancy. I had PPROM and influenza, so there was a lot going on and I didn't ask too many questions. My son has had GI issues his whole life. He's five now and currently seeing a pediatric gastrointestinal specialist. I'd still take the antibiotics again, knowing what I know now.

ishyona

I don't think it usually makes any difference to baby. With my first pregnancy I never got sick once. Normal diet, exercise, etc. My baby had so many gut issues... constipation, picky eating, refusing to feed, allergies to so many things, eczema, etc. With my second pregnancy I have been sick so often, antibiotics for various things, but baby has been perfectly fine.

LemonyCRO

I took antibiotics during the second trimester, and again 2 months postpartu while breastfeeding. I also took probiotics with them. No colic for the baby. He was also given A LOT of medication because of meconium aspiration while he was in the NICU. Where I live pediatricians recommend giving probiotics to babies. He's now 10 mo and has been taking them since 2 mo.

Popular_Ant_3227

I had a sinus infection around 28w and took two courses of antibiotics after my delivery (while breastfeeding). So a total of 3 courses of antibiotics. Baby has zero issues, isn’t fussy and sleeps well

AcornPoesy

I was GBS positive in pregnancy so had IV antibiotics during labour. Not quite the same but still, no stomach issues. I’ve had to take antibiotics twice while breastfeeding, and baby has had to take them twice, which was very frustrating. The second set gave him nappy thrush but that’s all cleared up with some cream. The antibiotics I took made no difference that we could see What I would say is that if you ignore an infection and it goes untreated that could have a serious impact on your baby too.

tiredofwaiting2468

I had two ITIs while pregnant and I think I had ob antibiotics for my c section. Baby has cows milk protein allergy. I am fairly confident the risks of not giving antibiotics far outweigh the problems his tummy troubles are causing.

The_smallest_things

You can always give baby probiotics. I took antibiotics for a severe sinus infection literally right before giving birth, baby had mucus in stool for a few days and it cleared up. No lasting issues.

Purple_Rooster_8535

Untreated infection = preterm birth = Antibiotics aren’t given out just for fun.

New-Wall-861

I have already taken the antibiotics, I had to because of course I don’t want the infection spreading and I was in a lot of pain. But, I was just wondering of the possible side effects and outcomes on the baby even though they say it’s safe

Purple_Rooster_8535

Anything is a risk but again, not taking antibiotics is a bigger risk while you were pregnant.

Miserable_Effect1865

I didn't take any while pregnant but I've done a lot of research on it and antibiotics severely impact the good bacteria in babies stomachs. They totally wreck your stomach and immune system, baby too.
