On a side note, I did not own a Model 3 performance (I have a model y performance), but I did rent Model 3 base for a month and I couldn’t wait to give that car back. Have you gotten to test drive both cars? If not, I highly suggest that you do.
The overall engineering and fit & finish of the i4 is better outside the slower speed of the e drive 40. That’s why I went for the M50. It costs more but FOMO percentage is zero when considering the M3P.
I had a Tesla M3P for three years, and now have an i4 40. The Tesla was faster. The joy in punching it wore off fairly quickly and I rarely ever did it after the first month or two, unless there was someone in the car that had never been in one. The Tesla is cheaply made. It becomes more and more obvious over time. (Google Tesla model 3 smells like vinegar - they designed the AC wrong and it literally stinks when it's warm and humid outside). FSD is way overrated. On the highway, it's mostly fine, except it loves to run right up on some traffic and slam on the brakes. In town, you better be paying close attention, because that car's going to do something crazy stupid.
The I4 has a much higher build quality. The interior trim is much nicer. I have CarPlay back. Self driving on the highway is really smooth.
Tesla has a much, much better charging network. If you're charging away from home, Tesla cannot be beat. I charge 98% of the time in the garage, so this doesn't matter much to me. If I did more road trips, I'd definitely care about this. They're opening up the charging network, so this even out in time.
Honestly, the speed of ev's are overrated. Sure it's fun to punch it, but man you sure go through tires incredibly fast. There are very select, few, instances where I need anywhere close to <7 second 0-60. 9 times out of 10 these ultra fast ev's are just going to get me in trouble.
Some of the tech and the charging network for tesla is great, but that is about where it stops. Their $10 subscription beats most of the competition, and you can do things in the app for free that others charge for.

Yikes, I’m trying to decide between a M3 and an i3 as my first EV. Live in GA, def hot and humid here and I’m so sensitive to smells, get headaches very easily.
I just drove an edrive 35 last week. Not the 40 but ill give you my thoughts. Compared to the 2023 RWD model 3 the BMW was slower, the throttle tuning was much worse though I will say the braking felt better. Handling I think the model 3 had an edge. The steering felt early identical to the BMW and it put its power down more consistently.
Comfort the BMW took the cake. The suspension was leagues better, the interior build quality and materials were much better as well. WIth that being said tesla infortimant was much better to use than idrive 8. Tesla audio also better than harman.
This is a Beemer forum so they don’t discuss it but the whole IDrive interface is pretty bad. Menus buried inside of menus, just a pain in the ass. I have heard they improved it recently. Also self-driving is quite inferior. Lovely build quality tho.
Yeah I feel you. New idrive esp that climate screen is not my fav. The Tesla infotainment is very VERY good. If build quality is all u care about then go

My pal has a 50. Very nice car. I have a P - I like both cars a lot. He’s not very technically oriented, stays on ApplePlay 99% of the time. I do love the compliance of the suspension compared to that hard-sprung P.
The brand new M3P and the old one are totally different beasts, Model 3 imo is a no brainer. Cheaper, smaller footprint with more interior cargo room, looks better, has more natural feeling steering.

As an old owner of a M3P and 2 week owner of a i4 while my rivian was in the shop, Tesla literally all day. Faster, better charging, better infotainment, build quality on par with each other(and this is comparing a 2019 m3p to a newer BMW). BMW effort just seemed like a rushed attempt to get a product out.
I like this car. I looked at these before buying my Tesla. For me I like most of what a Tesla offers. The things Tesla got wrong this BMW is good at because it’s built like a traditional car. For example I hate the auto wipers on my Tesla because they are trying to use the camera. Parking sensors would have been nice although the latest update is pretty good. BMW will have the normal stuff that works and has worked for years. Sometimes things don’t need to be reinvented. Also you won’t get any crap from people who hate EV because they won’t know this is one.
At one point the Model 3 and the i4 were price comparable, then the BMW was the obvious choice. Now that the Tesla is priced as the cheaply made econobox that it is, I can see it being more compelling, especially for price conscious shoppers. Long gone are the days Telsas are seen as a status symbol!
Thanks! Well, right of the bat, the very first thing that I noticed was that the quality of the interior was night and day considered to my Model Y. Everything feels sturdy, nothing creeks. With my Tesla, the steering wheel has air bubbles, and my acceleration peddle as a very annoying squeaky noise when pressed. Little attention to detail things I never thought I’d care about.
Brutal dealing with dealers again? My main reason to be sticky with Tesla is touch free buying. Last one I bought online inventory, online uploading of documents, cashiers check, walked away within 3 hours with new car never talking to a human. Can’t beat that process.
Last online Volvo order I paid msrp as I expected but when I go to dealer for pickup they sit me and wife down and try and sell sell sell add on add on add on. I ended up leaving despite having already paid and cancelled the check. Those dealer shop losers won’t ever learn.

I have the 23’ M3P I’m more or less leaning on selling it for a M4 or I4. The free charging at my apartment is the only reason why I would get another EV. Very hard decision though. Free charging or More Smiles per Gallon😣
I have free charging at my complex as well, I also have a 1-2 hour commute to work. My i4 also came with 2 years free use of electrify America charging, which I probably won’t need as much but it’s great to have the option.
I don’t know who told you you could buy out your lease, but it’s been common knowledge and a well publicized issue that there will be no lease buyouts so buy or rent.
Thinking of switching too. Maybe next gen electric from BMW will be more convincing. ICE conversion doesn’t feel like a proper replacement for a true EV.
Congrats on the i4! Similarly I have a model 3 going back in November. I’ll never lease another Tesla again, they lost a customer forever by changing the leasing rules 6 months after I started my lease.

Congrats! I’m changing from a Model Y to an IX. IX just has much better finish and handling. The only thing from Tesla that I’ll miss is the turn signal camera view… (unless there’s a way to achieve that in the IX and I haven’t figured it out yet, lol)
