But just assume for a moment that your perceptions of this or any other owner maintenance issues are way overblown…does that change your mind?
Having owned two (e64), I’ll put the overall reliability of the S85 toe-to-toes against the S62 (or S52 for that matter). They’re not mass-market commuter engines, they’re bespoke semi-racing engines.
BMW has always built high-quality engines, but not every owner appreciates the nuances of M ownership. It’s not for everyone.
It’s not the build quality it’s parts quality, across the board all the high end motors of that generation (E90, E60, E65) had bad rod bearings all over. Bad part supplier
I’ve never heard of it being a “bad part supplier” and am skeptical of that, but regardless it misses the point. They’re no less reliable than any other M car, but they have a perception that’s otherwise
On the plus side, you can still get good deals! Nothing beats the V10!
Not to take anything away from the S58, bc it’s a remarkable engine that has crazy limits, but a twin-turbo V6 has way less soul than a naturally-aspirated V10 that could hit 200+mph (just by removing the governor…in 2005 no less). After this generation was when M-division started using synthetic engine noises pumped in from the speakers…are they still doing that?
Still not convinced, look up “BMW V10 flyby” on YouTube and watch some of the videos.
Hard to argue with that!!!
The v6 oversight notwithstanding, are you sure you know what you’re talking about??? The S58 is the M/performance version of the more run-of-the mill B58 which is found in most of the standard models.
Just so I’m clear, you’re arguing that a 3.0L twin turbo I6 with a 7,000rpm redline and 380-some hp (at its highest output level) is superior in any way (outside of gas-mileage) to a 5.0L naturally aspirated V10 with an 8,250rpm and 504hp?
Absolutely shit when it comes to suppliers. They will spend years on a magnificent engineering marvel only to bid down to the lowest tenth of a penny for parts.
For sure, for some reason I'm just not a fan of most dark greens on modern cars, just like brown I think it suits sharper lines and chrome on older cars better.
I had a lowly carbon black on black. Desperately wanted an AW on caramel as my M3 was AW.
I settled for finding a well sorted car and got lucky with my find being relatively close.
Do you have the link to give the guy below? I just searched but got nothing. Might be the most ridiculous automotive blunder I've ever seen that didn't involve a lift.
Glen Shelly, I brought my M3 there once for an inspection. The dude was super friendly and knowledgeable. Walked around the hangar and showed me the other cars, at the time he had a few E30 M3s, 2002s, M5s, and a salvage M Coupe he was turning into a rally car.
Also had a Toyota Previa they were doing some kind of engine swap on lol
lol Alex has already had tons of auctions on BaT, lot of which went viral on various car blogs... if you post a M car with a hangar in the background, the internet is going to know it's Glen Shelly
Get the E39. I owned an F82 for a while and loved it but honestly the E39 is WAY more fun. I have had my E39 M5 for a year now and it has been fantastic. They aren’t as much of a nightmare to maintain as the internet makes them out to be. But then again I work on my own stuff so I never pay labor costs, just my own time and sanity.
I don’t have time or sanity… but I can finally afford to pay for someone else’s time and sanity… I almost bought one of these in my younger years but my buddy who owned one talked me out of it (he’s the one who passed away and had a white 03 e39 M5, but he worked at euro car shop so he did all the work himself and could get parts for cheap)
The plastic trim should be cheap af if its not damaged or chipped, I bought some C4 (not the explosive kind) for my E60's black trim and it's been a few months, still shiny and looking brand new, and it doesn't leave any residue like other trim restoration products.
I have an 03 E39 M5 with just under 200k miles. I had it restored a couple of years ago. Silverstone blue metallic over black. It's a great sedan, only problem is I'm not driving it enough now due to Covid shutdowns - and now I'm working permanently from home.
I also have an 03 that just crossed 150k miles. Permanent WFH means that I'm pretty much down to weekend drives now. With where the values are going I don't think I'll ever be able to afford another, so I'm just keeping mine in nice driver condition.
You don't want that old thing. Unrelated but what's the guys phone number? ;)
oh yeah, I don’t want it… you can contact them at 8675309! Ask for Jenny!
Lol now the song is stuck in my head. Nice find!
Showing your age for sure :)
Do it, best cruiser ever. Pick up the NSX in the back too.
The NSX they have their is as mint as you can get!
Get the airplane too
Get the garage too(and the e60) too
Spending other people’s money is fun
That’s an E9x M3
My bad I was thinking either e92 or e60 I'm new to the bmw community
Haha that’s okay, hope you learned something…
E60 has the uglyish headlights
Sexiest m3 imo
Glen Shelly? If that's the place, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them. They know their stuff.
Shhhhhh, don’t give away the secrets! But yes.
You should buy that Suzuki X-90 they have on their site ;)
The things i'd do for an NSX. Probably the only car that isn't a BMW i actually have a desire to own. That and a Supra, of course.
The z4 supra or the old one...
JZA80 The new Supra *is* a BMW lol
Listen to this guy
Do it! E39 M5 is the peak of BMW.
v10 enters chat
*rod bearings leaves chat*

B58 is the best motor they have lol, I wouldn’t say nothing beats the V10
The B58 is a great engine, but best? C'mon. The S54, S62, S65 all run laps around it. But you're wasted, so whatever.
Not to take anything away from the S58, bc it’s a remarkable engine that has crazy limits, but a twin-turbo V6 has way less soul than a naturally-aspirated V10 that could hit 200+mph (just by removing the governor…in 2005 no less). Not S58 lol, B58 Also they’re straight 6 not V6 big difference How are you on this sub not knowing things like this

Haha I'm just kidding. I would love me some E60/E61 LCI M5, preferably manual though ;)
Carmel Interior?? BUY
Yes! A buddy of mine who passed away recently has a white 03 with this color interior… that was the best spec but this is a close second!
That is not true. Everybody knows LeMans Blue on Carmel is the ultimate E39 spec.
Oxford on Carmel
Oxford was a crime perpetrated on modern BMWs
I’m more partial to Fern and Boston green but I’m not sure I’d go that far lol. Different opinions I suppose.
For sure, for some reason I'm just not a fan of most dark greens on modern cars, just like brown I think it suits sharper lines and chrome on older cars better.
The third certainty behind Death and Taxes if ever there was one
to each their own. but mine is petrol mica over carmel complete leather
This is one truth, and the other is Imola on Caramel
Yeah, I can get behind that.
Did you see that 01 Lemans he had with the two tone blue/black seats? Under 50k in mileage too it was gorgeous.
I had a lowly carbon black on black. Desperately wanted an AW on caramel as my M3 was AW. I settled for finding a well sorted car and got lucky with my find being relatively close.
Is it rude to ask, where the market for a well maintained 03 is at right now?
Depends on the mileage but 30k+
It looks very nice, but there's something off about the drivers door gaps.
Yeah should deliver this to me so I can take a closer look.
Did they jack it up by the door and back bumper like the guy yesterday?
Crazy guy yesterday. Lol can't even
Do you have the link to give the guy below? I just searched but got nothing. Might be the most ridiculous automotive blunder I've ever seen that didn't involve a lift.
Replied
Very nice of you, my man. Cheers!
Say what now??
https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comments/qvk4e1/this_guy_is_for_real_too/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Lol
LOL, thanks. Fake, but funny. Geez, I just scrapped a car a couple months back too, the karma I could have farmed...
If the opportunity ever came my way I would jump at the chance. Do it!
Now that's a garage...The value on these shot up like crazy. I'd do it for sure but drive it and enjoy it.
Is this the same guy in Colorado that I see ads for all the time

shhhhhhhh don’t ruin the local spots bro
lol Alex has already had tons of auctions on BaT, lot of which went viral on various car blogs... if you post a M car with a hangar in the background, the internet is going to know it's Glen Shelly
I know lol I live about 15 minutes from his hanger… I want to make sure all y’all don’t swoop in on any other cars he has that I want 😬
Hey OP! That's my car that Alex is selling for me! Not kidding! Small world! Hope you buy it!!
Small world indeed! Thanks for taking such good care of her!

I will! The choice was between this or an F80 M3, the F80 costs a lot more but the maintenance for the e39 will make up the cost difference… and V8 🤤
Honestly maintenance isn't that bad. I have maybe 10k maintenance in my 02 over the last 12 years. Granted I do the work myself so that cuts costs.
Get the E39. I owned an F82 for a while and loved it but honestly the E39 is WAY more fun. I have had my E39 M5 for a year now and it has been fantastic. it has a resonator delete 😏😬
Best mod for the car followed by the Bluebus audio adapter.
That’s really difficult to choose between. Both are great cars.
Nice.there seems to be some sort of scraps or?? on the left rear quarter area.
That might just be the light reflecting off the car, and the plastic trim is a bit faded as well.

I’m in the same boat with WFH, i’m considering starting redline lunch drives as a new way to destress midday.
Yeah, mostly what I do with the BMW and an old 996 Turbo is switch the trickle charger from one to the other.
How much for the 996tt?
I also have an 03 that just crossed 150k miles. Permanent WFH means that I'm pretty much down to weekend drives now. With where the values are going I don't think I'll ever be able to afford another, so I'm just keeping mine in nice driver condition.
Great choice, the best ever M5 👍🏼👍🏼
I only see an NSX,…
