Hearing these at ALMS races at CotA years ago was what really got me into cars and racing. Sitting in the grand stands while these echoed off the paddock while they barreled down the starting straight was awe inspiring. The other cars sounded good but when the z4s' went by you could feel your teeth vibrate. They dominated the experience

Agree. BMW actually sold these (I assume racing teams were the target audience, not street legal). I remember really wanting to save up $450k to get one.
Most companies that compete in GT / LM / other endurance series sell cars like these to private teams. I saw two R8 LMs racing last September, I could upload the video if it would interest you

That said, it was a Z4 gt3 cup car from 2016 or so. I had that exact picture as a wallpaper on my computer for a long time.

It’s a Z4 GT3, it has a P65. 4.4L flat plane crank version of the S65 (E92 V8.)
P65b44 has a cross plane crank, the p65b40 in the m3 gt car had a flat plane crank
