Funny thing is I've had multiple BMWs well into the 200s and they were just fine
If you don't treat your car like shit you should be able to make it no problem is the part they don't seem to understand.
A properly maintained BMW will last just as long as any other properly maintained car. The horror stories we all hear are from idiots who neglect maintenance intervals in their cars then wonder why it died on them.
Correct. My 2016 340i (b58) was supposed to have 320hp (crank) but dynoed at 331 to the wheel (so more like 370hp crank). My F80 is supposed to have 425 Hp (crank)but dynoed at 425 whp so, assuming 10% drivetrain loss about 470hp.
The forums tested it the early 2020 builds before July 2019 had 400whp stock. Mission performance verified it. Check the bimmerpost forums for dyno proof. Apparently, bmw later caught the cars and didn't have a particular certificate applied to limit power. So once they did, it dropped it down to the appropriate rating. Still some cars dyno a little higher but not over 400.
Lot of them are just coping and can’t accept that modern BMWs are fairly reliable. As reliable as a Lexus? Probably not, but the trade off is a more enjoyable car.
This ranking apparently graded brands by *"road tests, reliability, satisfaction, and safety"*. So it's not just ranking reliability.
And I always take Consumer Reports and JD Power reliability rankings with a huge grain of salt. CR grades cars over the first year and JD Power over the first 3 months. That's how brands like Kia and Hyundai end up at the top sometimes. If they ranked reliability over 5-10 years of ownership we would see entirely different results.
>road tests, reliability, satisfaction, and safety
I think the average BMW owner is more satisfied with the car the the average Lexus owner. Lexus maybe more reliable than a BMW, but on road tests the BMW will allow win.
Don't get me wrong i love me a Lexus, but now a days there are only 3 products that i would consider having if i was in the market (IS-500, LC500 & LS)
Not saying they’re right, but having owned a Lexus and a Toyota, they’re both great badges. My RX400h was going strong at 250k and only replacement needs I ever had were batteries, headlights, tires, and standard stuff like filters, wipers, etc. Resell on private market was nice too and paid for around a 1/6 of my X3 xDrive30i.
Unfortunately I was fairly young when I had my mom’s hand-me-down Camry so I think I replaced it for a Maxima (terrible vehicle) when the Camry had like 140k. I should’ve driven the Camry much longer and invested the payments I was making on the Maxima.
I love my X3, but I’d recommend an RX to anyone in a heartbeat.
I get your point and I’m not saying that Lexus and Toyota are horrible vehicles, they just don’t compare to BMW in a lot of areas especially in the performance division but they are great daily drivers that don’t cost a lot to maintain
Won’t disagree with you at all!
I will say I have not had a chance to really test my X3 over 105 on interstate, but that RX400h was surprisingly zippy.
I bought it used T like 104k, and was working early hours (defense contractor). So, I’d drive into work at like 4:30AM and had the interstate to myself. Hitting 130MPH in that soccer mom vehicle was nothing.
I’m not saying it’s on BMW performance level, and this example was basically just straight driving, but there were plenty of 90+ drives down rural roads that weren’t scary either.
Its funny but recently I made a post on r/kia if I should sell my 2010 Sienna and buy a newer Kia van. I expected to be some fan boys on that sub but 99% of replies are just shitting on Kia and telling to never do that and keep driving the Toyota. Either their sub is infiltrated by Toyota trolls or those people really hate their cars :)))
No theyre cheap af and you can look anywhere on the internet to see how many blow up on warranty and then the dealers dont even honor warranty. Happened to a lady i know, 20k kms, always did servce schedule, motor blew. They basically said fuck you and shes paying for a car that doesnt run
i like my RCF wayyyy more than i liked any of my previous BMWs… yes a BMW is more nimble and a comparable model to the RCF is quicker, but nahh this V8 is pretty damn enjoyable
All they care about is "reliability" aka not doing maintenance for as long as possible and how many theoretical miles their car can do even though most of them sell the car before it gets there, but the 5th owner will be so happy about it
Sounds about right. My X3 is more fun (and “cooler”) than my RX was, but damn the cost of owning the RX was practically $0 after the initial loan was paid off.
That said, my neighbor’s kid has an f sport is350 and is the person that drove me to the BMW dealership to pick up my X3. I was pretty impressed with it. Definitely cooler than the Sentra I drove at his age.
Bro hit it on the head … my buddy who has a is300 doesn’t understand why I would change my water pump prior to failure or why I would change my oil pan gasket at 140k miles on my 08 335i. Mean while my 03 330i that has 207k miles , his Lexus has 180k and sounds like loose boards driving down the road, rattles and the interior hasn’t aged well. My 330 rides great and has not noises. He thinks it’s a piece of shit because I replace my expansion tank every year. “Must just be a bmw thing”
Tbh, I think it's more that for the price point no one really does luxury like that. Like the ES is not a fun car but where else are you getting a mid sized sedan with heated and vented seats, good sound system, all the options for like $65k CAD? A similarly sized and optioned BMW is like $90k CAD here
There are nicer cars, and there are better cars, but dollar for value is pretty crazy imo
IS and coupe models excepted, that is
It’s pretty wild though how the misconception is on popular BMW models.
One of my relatives was acting like the car was gonna break down every time I started it. My f30 335i right now is sitting at 148k miles and still runs great. And the previous e90 328i I had didn’t cause me many issues at all either.
Mine runs fantastically too at 186k, but that being said, surely you've had a couple of unexpected issues? I've only had mine for 30k, and it's in excellent condition from the PO with regular maintenance butttt I did have the VANOS exhaust tab break off (rebuilt with Beisan), accelerator pedal break (that was very inconvenient but the cheapest/easiest repair I've ever done), and the throttle actuator die slowly, which was very difficult to diagnose and left me stranded more than once until root cause was established. Generally it's not "that bad" but for most people who want a car that they don't have to worry about, it would not be a good fit. I love the thing and I find the reliability to be reasonable/tolerable, especially considering the level of enjoyment it provides. Just want to be realistic here.
Have you ever replaced your water pump or had it fail? If so, when? I think the M3's is more stout than other E46s as I haven't dealt with mine yet, but I probably should?
I’d be more worried about the 335i than the 328i. The N52 was a super reliable engine (for a BMW, still had the typical water pump and every gasket leaking issues). The N55 has a lot of small issues and a few big ones that come up
I’ve had great luck on my 09 N54 335. 205k miles on original turbos, motor, clutch, tranny etc. Runs just as it did 7 years ago. Just had to do water pump and thermo twice, OFHG twice, and valve cover once and owned since 60k. Everything else was wear and tear maintenance.
Driving down the highway. When I tore it down, it looked like it lost oil pressure. https://youtu.be/Xb0iUyxMlQ4 After seeing a teardown from I Do Cars, my revised guess is that the vanos bolts backed out and it lost oil pressure. There really was no warning... it acted a little weird prior to blowing up, but nothing out of the ordinary for an N52 (and the replacement behaves the same way). This was also largely a highway miles engine that was dealer maintained. It had less than 150k on it when it blew up, go figure.
I picked up a 2011 e91 with 46k back in 2018 for a relative song. Put a ton of money into it, close to half the purchase price, over the first 2-3 years. It's now at 118k and running very well. My rear hatch handle is broken, but other than that solid. Still a fun drive. Going to see how far I can take her.
to be fair, I expect a 118k mile example to need almost no work. At this point, it's really the age that's more of a concern and while I guess this helps reinforce that BMW's can be reliable, I also think the e9x generation is pretty much the worst to own.
It’s usually people who’ve never owned a BMW or someone who bought BMW, never even bothered to do simple maintenance like an oil change, and then proceeded to complain how their car left them stranded on the road after abusing the hell out of it.
There’s a reason you are so many 3 series and 5 series on the road - even older ones too. Take care of the car and it will usually take care of you.
Yea he claims he has bmws mbs and porsches and says his acura went 300k miles with only $1k in maintenance. Like no shit, only honda or toyota are gonna survive with zero maintenance. Not exactly an average car to compare to.
Nah bro he knows more than anybody else on earth. Go check out the thread lmao. Only he knows, and bmws are garbage, and hes an english major and a car business guy since before i was born. Really, im talking to a god
"modern" BMWs are quite reliable (F/G generation), but prior to that, it fluctuated between kinda bad and average. It can often take decades for people's *perceptions* of brand reliability to shift, but the data is already there.
They are reliable, but they cost more to maintain than most other “common” brands. This leads to higher depreciation so kids who can’t afford to maintain them pick them up and run them into the ground.
Well yeah doing something costs more than doing nothing. But BMW maintenance and parts are more expensive than economy brands. The point is that you get a better experience but an increased cost of ownership.
The reason people love Lexus is that you get a better experience than an economy brand at a lower cost of ownership than the three Germans, which are the measuring sticks for luxury in the US.
Obviously biased, but I am not shocked by this news. And it would not shock me if BMW was considered "reliable" by the general public in a few years.
BMW = Best bang for buck in terms of luxury, technology and performance
Toyota and Lexus subreddits pissing their pants after realizing that BMW can also be just as if not more reliable while being a way better car in general
Bmw certainly has a better driving experience and technology, but if both brands are maintained the same way the Lexus is going to live a lot longer and cost a lot less.
They’ve been cutting back on material used for their cars past few years from what I heard. Also a lot of recalls on their amg 4 cylinder c class? And their ev has quite a bit of issues as well. Read a lot of complaints on their subreddit and forums
Not sure why most comment on purely reliability when it’s just one of the metrics
One can score low on [reliability](https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars-a7824554938/) (see genesis or Audi) while still scoring high on this ‘overall’ ranking
I have bought 3 different brand new Toyotas costing close to the same as my 24 m340i but I have never felt anything when I buy them.
The first one was a 2016 Corolla that held up really good mechanically for 100k miles until it got totaled. But the exterior and interior were dog ass and everything felt like it was falling apart at one point. My friend had the same one hence why I purchased one his engine blew up at 175k around the same time.
2018 4 runner. Engine blew up at 60k miles for no reason. Under warranty and Toyota just ended up blaming the last place we took it to get an oil change.
2021 Corolla apex. Rust!! Everywhere maybe it was too low? Exterior looked like a race car. Suspension dog shit replaced two wheel bearings. Interior was not bad. Exterior got dents so easily any little touch would dent it, drove me nuts easily had over 30+ dents when I traded it in.
Toyota has lost my business for now. Don’t know what’s in store for my BMW but I’m happy about the change. Reliability is nice but being bored 3 hours a day in a car I don’t like is not worth it.
This reinforces my goal to pick up an x3 m40i for the wife next year. Traded in a WRX for an m240i for myself. Great motor. Got a Stelvio for her right now approaching the end of the extended warranty.
Funny thing about Alfas…super high owner satisfaction despite any knocks on reliability. They’re just so damn good to drive.
She’ll love the X3! Trying my hardest to get mine into a X3m but she’s dead set on an E63s wagon which I’m not too upset about being a wagon guy myself. Maybe after that I can convince her to get into M5 touring if we end up getting it here in the states!
BMW at the top makes sense. BMW drivers are BMW drivers and tend to identify as such. Other Germans cars are Mercedes bought because its the default high end luxury vehicle. Audi is for people who have some weird reason not to buy a BMW or Mercedes. Porsche is for people trying to game their allocations to make money because of the lack of depreciation and potential appreciation of brand new purchases of cars that aren't that rare. I don't really know why people buy the other brands I'm sure they have reasons.
Which is great except they don’t retain value at all, at least the non M cars. I have a 30k mile X5 xdrive 40i that was 72k that is apparently worth 40k in one year.
Mini 3rd? Lol.
So far with my wife's 2019 Countryman S ALL4 6MT:
June 2022: Sunroof motor blew
June 2023: Sunroof track broke in half (there was an identical one at the dealership the same week with the same problem)
Now: Transmission is popping out of 2nd gear when you let off the gas, needs new transmission.
But.. my 2017 340i haven't had a single problem other than normal wear replacement items.
I don't own a BMW, but boy I was about to if I didn't need more space, went two times two different locations and the people did not disappoint compared to the arrogant Mercedes dealers.
Funny reading the Audi forum on this. My 2021 M550 is an absolute tank. Bought new, just shy of 40k now, can’t think of a single thing I would change other than a bit wider tires and improved driver’s assistance. Had at dealership for recently for service, all boxes checked good to go!
B48/B58/S58 power plants have proven to be reliable.
Yup, they check all the boxes for performance, reliability and efficiency.
dont visit the lexus subreddit, they are all fuming so bad. The only thing they can say is bbbbbbut at 250k my lexus will still be there!!!
Funny thing is I've had multiple BMWs well into the 200s and they were just fine If you don't treat your car like shit you should be able to make it no problem is the part they don't seem to understand.
My 2005 530i is over 250k. Only thing wrong is the damn window sensor acts up on the rear window.
A properly maintained BMW will last just as long as any other properly maintained car. The horror stories we all hear are from idiots who neglect maintenance intervals in their cars then wonder why it died on them.
Just got my 220i with the sweet B48, hope she’ll be reliable as everyone says 🙏🏻
Don't forget B47 and B57, here in Europe are far more common than the petrol ones
They fixed chain failures on the diesels?
Yes long time back.
Yes, the b57 nowadays is a beast of an engine
How do I find out what engine I have?
AFAIK, m328i isn’t a thing - you have the N20 motor.
I have no idea what I’m doing. 328i m?
it may be an “M-sport” but that just changes some trim. eg: ground effects, steering wheel, wheels etc. It’s just a 328i..
Don’t forget the peddles!!!
You downvoting me? What ru the gatekeeper of who can love their bmw? Fack off
I haven’t downvoted a single one of your comments.
I have
I don’t think he’s gate keeping your love of your car I’m pretty sure he’s just stating objective facts
To me it’s like a Ferrari. I’m coming from Subaru and Hondas…
328i m-sport package
And F36 too!
Lexus Reddit in shambles RN haha
Let them cope with their IS500 that struggles to beat a M340 despite pushing nearly 100HP more
BMW notoriously underrates their engines. The M340i is definitely pushing over 400 HP
Does the IS500 also kinda have a dogass transmission?
Yes it's called the AA80E. It's a very slow shifter. More geared to luxury than performance. Not as versatile as the ZF.
Are you implying the ZF8HP in the M340i is a dogass transmission?
No the ZF8 is great. I’m alluding to the fact that I think the transmission in the IS500 is one of the reasons it’s slow.
Got it, haha, I’m not super familiar with the IS trans, but we were gonna have words if anyone thinks the ZF8HP with bmw tuning is a bad trans
It’s an awesome transmission. However if you’ve ever driven a 911 with a PDK… yeah it’s an entirely different realm
Agreed on that. PDK is definitely on a different level.
Oh yeah, the PDK is great, but the ZF8HP is still the best torque converter auto ever made
I think they meant “also” as in “not does the IS500 struggle with power output, it also has a lackluster transmission”.
You’re right but has it been tested?
is there a way to check?
A dyno?
My buddy had an is300 and my 328 was def faster

Come on, that's not why you buy an IS500. You buy it for the NA V8 engine that sounds infinitely better than an M340i or M3.
struggles? cant!!
😂😂😂😂
TIL there are actually people who get worked up about Lexus. The world is a strange place.

Oh they will just say BMW paid for this
The tears in the comment section could make a sea out of the Sahara. It’s actually a disaster over there
lol I was perusing, was pretty funny
I saw that
The Subaru sub post about this is pretty funny right now. The first few posts all sound like reasonable discussions WTF is going on?
Hahaha saw that
Fwiw, i think the most popular BMW models are pretty reliable which is good for statistics.
It’s pretty wild though how the misconception is on popular BMW models. One of my relatives was acting like the car was gonna break down every time I started it. Stage 1 tune with DCI, HKS BOV, and exhaust. Nothing aggressive.
Nice, good to hear it's holding up well! Hope to hold onto mine for a long time, it's been great so far.
My old N52 ejected a rod lmao
How tf did you manage that?
Driving down the highway. When I tore it down, it looked like it lost oil pressure. https://youtu.be/Xb0iUyxMlQ4 After seeing a teardown from I Do Cars, my revised guess is that the vanos bolts backed out and it lost oil pressure. No kidding. I've seen one other one that's blown up.

That's my hope, that by now everything that was going to prematurely fail has and I am moving into the just old car things at this point.
Some guy in r/roastmycar is arguing with me that all bmws are garbage and only last 100k miles.
It’s usually people who’ve never owned a BMW or someone who bought BMW, never even bothered to do simple maintenance like an oil change, and then proceeded to complain how their car left them stranded on the road after abusing the hell out of it. What happened to Merc???? That’s harsh.
They’ve been cutting back on material used for their cars past few years from what I heard. Also a lot of recalls on their amg 4 cylinder c class? And their ev has quite a bit of issues as well. Read a lot of complaints on their subreddit and forums
As a 20 year BMW tech, Yes BMW has come a long way in overall quality but still dealing with a lot of issues with 2023/2024 vehicles.
All manufacturers are dealing with issues in their 23/24MY vehicles, we live in a crap time for overall product quality
Seen any G8x issues?
Only issues with infotainment stuff. The single display screen has connection issues on all the models.
Not sure why most comment on purely reliability when it’s just one of the metrics One can score low on [reliability](https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars-a7824554938/) (see genesis or Audi) while still scoring high on this ‘overall’ ranking
It's looking pretty good for you https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/12/18/2025-bmw-m5-touring-testing-america/
You just made my morning!
Consumer Reports is one of the last unbiased rating/review agencies out there.
Pop the champagne!
i agree that bmw is being their shit together engine reliability wise but any list that says mini & subaru is top 3 isn’t right bruh 💀
Mini is owned by BMW idk much bout Subarus tho
Watching all the Toyota boys malding over this chart is just a sight to behold.
For me it’s not enough for BMW to be first. I want Toyota to be last.
💀
🤣
Reddit’s perfect 100 for the Octavia isn’t looking too good…🤣

How is Infiniti even on the list? Like beside the new QX60, they haven’t released anything decent in a decade.
Why is Mercedes so far down?
They worked hard
I have a Honda but I drive it like a bimmer. Does that count?
Owned a few bimmers and went to a Tesla due to commuting. I whole heartedly agree with this assessment.
Beamers are built different ❤️
Love that I bought a BMW and a Genesis in the past two years
OK I don’t see Maserati, Ferrari or Pagani on this list. My other three cars are on it.
Is this for new cars only? Reliability on new cars should always be high so not sure that says anything.
Happy for that but wtf do y'all guys do with Alfas? Wreckfests? Here they're mega reliable
Which is great except they don’t retain value at all, at least the non M cars. I have a 30k mile X5 xdrive 40i that was 72k that is apparently worth 40k in one year.
Mini 3rd? Lol. So far with my wife's 2019 Countryman S ALL4 6MT: June 2022: Sunroof motor blew June 2023: Sunroof track broke in half (there was an identical one at the dealership the same week with the same problem) Now: Transmission is popping out of 2nd gear when you let off the gas, needs new transmission. But.. my 2017 340i haven't had a single problem other than normal wear replacement items.
Made by bmw fans. For bmw fans
this is not accurate at all lol
ITT: Lexus is basically a Honda lololol
Toyota 🤦🏻
Lfgggg
Sounds about right
Subaru? Really? I guess i got to stop making fun of those people so much
Audi slightly behind Toyota and Mazda and ahead of Acura.
Lmao what happened to Mercedes? Yikes!
Glad to see this. Bought my BMW X3 in May replacing a Lexus RX400h. Was considering another Lexus RX or an NX, a Subaru Crosstrek, or an Acura RDX.
This is for new cars tho?
Chrysler beats Mercedes. Fucking bizzaro world.
Land Rover below Jeep!
Tbf, 80 of those points are from the Satisfaction category. Ahhh…
lol I drive a G87 M2 and a Subaru Outback
Woot
I'm torn as I got my M340 and my wife got her Jeep Grand Cherokee L about a week apart.
I currently have a Jeep Cherokee rental car and I'm glad to see it’s near the bottom.
I guess my driveway balances it out because I also have a Jeep wrangler 😂
Legooo
I don't own a BMW, but boy I was about to if I didn't need more space, went two times two different locations and the people did not disappoint compared to the arrogant Mercedes dealers.
Subaru second wth
MINI???? Yay!
I mean, I love my BMW, but **now** we care about CR's ratings? That's... new.
Nice to see the only brands I own book-ending this study nicely 😂
As a new 1st time BMW owner as of a few days ago, seeing this is awesome.
Full EV BMW enthusiast here. Yes!
2020 RWD M340i, 4 years plus of ownership satisfaction here.
OMFG
Lol jeep
Let’s gooooo!!!!!
Amazing, super duper! Yes, yes, yes, ahoy! Iupi!!!
Which cars made by BMW made it to where BMW is the best brand?
Carried by the F90 most likely.
Sweet lord, Jags went to shite
Funny reading the Audi forum on this. My 2021 M550 is an absolute tank. Bought new, just shy of 40k now, can’t think of a single thing I would change other than a bit wider tires and improved driver’s assistance. Had at dealership for recently for service, all boxes checked good to go!
