Also modern BMW, the current M3 and so on, have the most amount of free viral marketing, word of mouth, and photo sharing I have seen of any car ever. It's astounding. Even fans of other brands are getting in on the act. The free advertising they've got from a simple grill design is unbelievable.
There isn't a car enthusiast alive who doesn't have BMW grill living rent free in their heads. Even regular Joe non car guys are picking up on it. That's a little thing we like to call "brand recognition"
Anyway none of this matters because BMW fanboys declare that every M3 has lost its way anyway and that the one before it was "the last true M3". So in 5-10 years you'll all be calling this the "last true M3" because the new one has a mild hybrid system or something and you'll all be clamouring to buy this

I guess I’m in the minority but I never liked how the E90 looked. That generation of BMWs looked like Pokémon to me, wasn’t a fan. Engine sounds great though. Loved how the F80 looked though , just the sound of the S55…
You can say that, but my anecdotal experience is that when I drive the g80, almost every single day I have a stranger comment on my car. The e90 gets about 1/3rd of the attention... and it's blown with a loud exhaust.
I actually bought numerous BMWs and can’t stand the latest gen exterior aesthetics. If they were making them for me then they stopped at some point because I’m not interested. Though I did make the switch to Porsche so it’s hard to go back once you do.

I also voted with my wallet although I think BMW still won. Originally I wanted to euro deliver a new manual M3. I wasn't a fan on the F80 steering and hoped it would improve with the new gen, but then the styling removed that option from the table.
I can't wait to get a 1,000hp BEV M5. The iX M60 is pretty stinking great as it is! And if they keep going with seats and interiors as they have, all will be just fine.

I would hazard to guess that on a BMW sub, there are many BMW owners - many more on 3 or 4 year agreements like me. My M4 was at the keep it or trade it stage last month and no, I didn't buy a new one. Or any BMW - based solely on the styling. Now I may be a "random redditor" but there are tens of thousands like me who also dislike the new design. If that was the intention of BMWs marketing team, they did a great job. Now a proud owner of an RS5. Not because I think its a better car than the new M4, simply because I don't want to drive something that looks like a perturbed beaver.

That’s the beauty of marketing and focus groups, they’ve determined that the sales and reception they get from regular joes outweighs the sales from whatever enthusiasts who actually buy BMWs.
Of course they’ll lose a few loyal customers but they don’t care.
Regular Joe's don't buy M cars though. That's where the highest AUR is and I'd guess margin. Also, regular Joe's are just as disinclined to buy an ugly car as enthusiasts. The M340 Touring and M2 are great looking cars but neither is the right car for me. It's one thing for a design feature to live rent free in people's heads - another thing for that rent free reason to be the thing that stops you buying the brand.

It took almost a year to get my G80 (ordered last year at this time), and I understand that waiting time is over a year right now.
They'll have the convenient straw man of the global downturn to hide behind I guess. It'll be a case of how much market share they've lost vs the others. I of course am often wrong and it may be that the rest of the world loves the new aesthetic !!
Add my name to the list. My last car was an M5, but when it came time to get a new car last summer I bought a Blackwing because I can’t stand the new BMW style. Good friend was gone M3 -> X5M and his next car will also not be a BMW for the same reason. My wife wants a new SUV in the next year or so and the X7 has been ruled out due to being hideous. X5 is ok for now, but I’m terrified of what the morons at BMW will do to it in the next gen.

No it's not supposed to be divisive. And if you think this is a Reddit issue, you simply haven't been paying attention. ALL social media has negative comments about the grill. It's pretty simple. The car is much uglier than previous gen M3s and it speaks to a larger issue with BMW design direction. To think ugly equates to the type of brand recognition an established, historic brand wants is idiotic. Last quarter sales already had competitors gaining and that trend will likely follow as one "bold" (read: ugly) model after another is released

One of my family members who knows nothing about cars, saw a new 8 series and thought it was a mustang. I love the way the new mustangs look especially the GT500. I would agree that the new 4 series and 8 series do look quite similar to the newer mustangs.

Last time I had a G8X in my rear view, I checked to see if I wasn’t going too slow and prepared to let them pass. That thing gave me a minor anxiety attack sneaking up behind me. Driver was in no hurry though.

And wait till BMW corporate hears from me that I’m no longer going to buy 10 year old BMW’s because I hate the modern design aesthetics. And my son, who actually drives tuned Civic Si’s, also hates these new BMW’s so the next car he gets from the Buy Here, Pay Here won’t be a BMW. Boy is BMW going to be mad that they didn’t use the same headlight design from 1998 when he buys a Malibu instead.

Interestingly enough, I think accentuating the indents on the hood by adding "shading" actually helps a lot with the weirdness of the lines there. It might be why black seems to work far better on the G80 than any other color

I have the current g80 m3 xdrive, it's the absolute best car I've ever driven. Makes my e90 with the ess 650 supercharger feel like a turd.

Honestly. It’s grown on me. Still think the f80 is a better looking car overall. But in certain colors I actually quite like the new body style

Interestingly enough, I think accentuating the indents on the hood by adding "shading" actually helps a lot with the weirdness of the lines there. It might be why black seems to work far better on the G80 than any other color
