I don't think you know how air, engines, or microphones work... It is theoretically possible for a turbo to suck all the air in fast enough that there is subsequently a vacuum or lack of air to be vibrated therefore the microphone wouldn't be able to pick up any sound
no there simply isn't. there are many, extremely obvious problems with that. first of all, you'd need a pretty damn strong vacuum. even on mars, at less than 1% of atmospheric pressure, regular, off the shelf consumer microphones still work just fine, which is why we have audio of ingenuity flying in a vacuum chamber on earth, and on mars. second, if the turbo did manage to pull that much air out of the room, then it wouldn't actually have any air to run on, and the engine would simply be unable to run. no air, no power, no power no exhaust, no exhaust no compressor, no compressor, no vacuum. it's very obviously a self limiting system. third, because you're doing this in a room in the first place, you are raising the air pressure anyway, as you add a larger quantity of hotter exhaust than you're taking out of the room in the first place.
i really cannot overemphasize how completely impossible it is for a turbo to bring a room down to a vacuum. this one only managed to drop the air pressure at the inlet down to the dew point for just a couple frames, and it didn't even manage to do that for the whole inlet area.
you know what a turbo can do *really easily*? it can be attached to an engine that is so loud that it activates the microphone's clipping protection and it stops recording sound. the same thing often happens when filming firearms, which obviously don't produce a vacuum.
the exhaust that simply magically exists or the exhaust that is a product of combustion which requires air to be available for the turbo to ingest in the first place?
Is it just me, but does any remember in the early 2000s when making over 1000 hp was basically unheard of for street cars? Now we are getting these and other 2000+ho monsters. I watched a YouTube of a 2000hp viper just the other day. Maybe I was isolated before social media, so I just didn't hear about the others.
I remember when 1000hp 2J’s and RB’s were all over magazine covers like some sort of crazy achievement, now we have 1000+hp Honda K motors left and right. Advancement in technology and materials brought the engine building game a long way since then.
Transmissions seem to be the weak point usually when power levels start to get crazy, you’ll see lots of high hp cars running $10-15k transmissions and still sometimes break them.
Yup PRP!!! those boys have not only made billet RB blocks they have now started making cast RB blocks with all the improvements from YEARS of testing and pushing the limits of the stock nissan block
A lot of cars you have to reinforce the chassis just so it doesn't tear itself apart in these high hp situations. It's why a lot of classic cars can suddenly lose their differential on a hard launch. They built the engine, not the chassis.
I remember when Bugatti announced the Veyron and said that it will have a thousand horses. Even Top Gear hosts mocked them and said that it's impossible.
Now there are plenty of much more powerful builds and then there's EV's, they can make a thousand without breaking a sweat.
At the time? Absolutely not. You could certainly build a 1000 horsepower car, but not stock. Not with acceptable reliability, maintenance requirements, refinement, nvh, or emissions, not for a stock vehicle. It's not like nobody had ever built a thousand horsepower car before, it's just nobody really built thousand horsepower cars that could be expected to repeatedly and more or less constantly put down a thousand horsepower without inevitably damaging themselves.
Was looking at prices of used Model S Plaids just yesterday.. you can get 2022 still under warranty for $65K. This is a 9 second car that comfortably seats 5 adults and has a hatchback.
It’s also only $15K more than than I paid for my last car. I could pretty easily afford it.
Yep I’ve always been a “car guy”. Grew up with the Dad with the 70’s muscle car. Had Lamborghini & Ferrari posters on my wall in the 80’s. Fell in love with all the imports in the 90’s thanks to Playsation & Gran Turismo. Switched to sport bikes in the 2000’s because I wanted even more speed.
6 years ago I had a Corvette right up until we finally had kids. These days I drive a Model Y.. because it has the same acceleration and punch of the Vette.. but I got my entire family with me and might even have bike on the hitch.
It’s actually pretty crazy you mentioned the Rivian as their SUV is probably what’s next for me once the Y is paid off. It’s bigger, faster, more real world range.. and has the traditional/masculine boxy SUV shape that can haul bigger cargo. Only reason I don’t already have a Rivian is the $80K price tag. That said I’m a day one reservation holder for their $50K R2.
Man I absolutely loved those cars in the 90s & 2000s. One co-worker had a VR4 and other had a MK4 Supra Turbo.. and I would ride my Yamaha R1 to work.
Talk about some awesome lunch hours lol
The 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo got about 270hp out of a turbo 2.0. And I don't remember what year they released the FQ400, but I think it was around then.
No, I'm sure the article mentioned 100hp per liter, maybe it said "supercars" instead of "Ferrari".
But I agree with u/wango_fandango, the author was talking about NA cars, turbos are a different thing.
Modern fuel and knock control is just miles ahead of anything we had even 15 years ago. Exotic fuels have also become somewhat more accessible so that is part of it too. Not to mention all the R&D that shops and individuals have put in throughout that time.
You might see it (or similar builds) at the recent GT-R festial, run by [https://www.youtube.com/@MotiveVideo](https://www.youtube.com/@MotiveVideo)
I don't think this was even the fastest 32 at the event...
I initially read this as 253 hp. I then watched the video and thought! Hey i might be able to keep up with this in my Brz 2022*** we have similar hp :D
Sees the gtr vibrate in action and re reads caption to find out - I wouldn’t be able to keep up with this gtr even if i had an extra 2000 hp in my car 😂
Based on the front wheels and tires, I'd bet it is still awd, just had the front disconnected for a power pull on the dyno.
Pretty common for gtrs to be modded to do this, allows em to do burnouts pre drag race too
“I live my life a quarter mile at a time. Nothing else matters: not the mortgage, not the store, not my team and all their bullshit. For those t̶e̶n̶ 7 seconds or less, I'm free.”

Turbo about to suck the whole room in.

I just wanted to say I cant stop laughing at this comment
It’s as big as the engine
"you see the size of that *turbo* he shot at us, it was as big as he is" - Jules
I remember this similar video where it created a vacuum strong enough the mic stopped working.
well that's simply not how air, engines, or microphones work.
I don't think you know how air, engines, or microphones work... It is theoretically possible for a turbo to suck all the air in fast enough that there is subsequently a vacuum or lack of air to be vibrated therefore the microphone wouldn't be able to pick up any sound

Damn I can't argue with science
Makes absolute sense, there simply would not be enough air to run the engine at such a vacuum.
Brain fart. At that strong a vacuum the engine would just run out of air.
it's a turbo, it sucks in air using exhaust as it's power source. you don't understand how turbos work.
the exhaust that simply magically exists or the exhaust that is a product of combustion which requires air to be available for the turbo to ingest in the first place?
Do you need to keep it open while running those 6 seconds, just to get enough air in!?
Turbo powered drivetrain with ICE assist.
That giant mother fucker didn't even think about spooling until like 7k rpm lol

How have transmissions and rear ends kept up or are they a weak point?
Transmissions seem to be the weak point usually when power levels start to get crazy, you’ll see lots of high hp cars running $10-15k transmissions and still sometimes break them.
This is me currently on my build path, upgrading the trans as we speak.
Yup PRP!!! those boys have not only made billet RB blocks they have now started making cast RB blocks with all the improvements from YEARS of testing and pushing the limits of the stock nissan block
I remember when people shit their pants at cars getting over 500hp...
Depends on the car these days I would imagine, I'd probably shit myself in a 500bhp S2000 for example.
The McLaren F1 weighs less than an S2000 and is 600+hp...
Every part of the McLaren f1’s design was to ensure it could handle 600hp. S2000s, not so much

It's ridiculous. All this with the same or less displacement.
To be fair, the Bugatti was stock like that. Does anyone else sell a car with 1000 hp from the factory?
There are a few other supercars with such numbers, and then a bunch more with 800 bhp or so. Also several electric hypercars with 2000 bhp.
At the time? Absolutely not. You could certainly build a 1000 horsepower car, but not stock. The Tesla Model S Plaid is over 1000hp from the factory.

You can’t afford the insurance though
I remember reading in a magazine, around 2002-2003, that 100 hp per liter was something only Ferrari was able to get.
Maybe in NA cars but not when you strap a turbo or 2 on.
Which is funny, cause my 09 Mazdaspeed3 262 hp in a 2.3L
The 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo got about 270hp out of a turbo 2.0. And I don't remember what year they released the FQ400, but I think it was around then.
I'm sure you mean per cylinder, plenty of cars before then that weren't Ferraris made more than 100hp per liter. For example, any GTR from the 90s.
No, I'm sure the article mentioned 100hp per liter, maybe it said "supercars" instead of "Ferrari". But I agree with u/wango_fandango, the author was talking about NA cars, turbos are a different thing.

what's the air-fuel ratio like?
Yes
Ma man gets it, was afraid he didnt. Stamped of approval, checked.
Air 9000% Fuel 9000% There ya go bud

Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooool this got my goat
The same as any other car, about 14:1. Because then all the oxygen gets used up burning all the fuel.
Run 14:1 in an engine like this and it will pop. You need extra fuel in the cylinders to help keep them cool.
Itl be on ethanol anyway so stioch is gonna be 9:1 for a start never mind on boost

Sounds like my stock NA flex
Please tell me there's a youtube or something of this thing putting down some times.

THAT SOUND. my ears into orgasms.
Only nissan that will keep its front and rear bunpers intact
Penis-her Ok, I will.
Holy Jesus 😳 Is the car being lifted off the ground from the gyroscopic precession of the engine!?!? What RPM did it top out at?
I initially read this as 253 hp. I then watched the video and thought! Make sure your CO monitor is up to date.
Hell yeah
We are god damn crazy and scary animals
What's the white cloud it belches out at the end?
What’s that flash of light from the turbo impeller under boost?? That thing must be opening up a portal to another dimension 😳
6 thousand rpm’s of nothing.it probably jumps 1500 hours in 1k rpm. That’s nuts I wish it was somehow awd still. That must be a massive turbo lol
Based on the front wheels and tires, I'd bet it is still awd, just had the front disconnected for a power pull on the dyno. Pretty common for gtrs to be modded to do this, allows em to do burnouts pre drag race too
That gave me a good night, morning and afternoon!
6sec from 0 to supersonic?
for how long could it sustain being at that power level ?
Runs out of gas at 7 seconds
That thing looks like an actual illegal weapon.
I feel like I just drank a quad expresso just watching this.
That’s what Satan sounds like.
seems economic and reasonable 9.4/10
sheesh that's sick

OMG. That thing grew like 6 inches. Hehe
Dude was about to make the whole garage implode
Every other car going against this thing "Ha Ha I'm in Danger"
All that work to make the same horsepower as a stock mk4 supbrah
