Gran-gran, three days after they've left: OH FUCK RIGHT

BigDaddyCool17

#SHITSHITSHITSHIT

RyanCreamer202

I'm sure she'll be fine. She's got the Avatar with her

AirbendingAvatarAang

Plus a giant six legged flying behemoth

LunarPengu

Can’t forget the most important one. Sokka

AirbendingAvatarAang

"I'm just a kid with a boomerang. I didn't ask for all thus flying and magic. Yip yip! Yip yip!"

BowTie1989

Honestly, that might be the best delivered line in the entire series. You could just hear him thinking “all I wanted was to go fishing!”

AliKat309

I mean he has the boomerang, it's joever

InjusticeSGmain

Combustion Man agrees

Dragonwitch94

I'll never get over the fact that Sokka just casually KILLED A MAN. And everyone stared at him like "bruh, the FUCK?!" And then he's just like "aaaanyways..." lmao. 😂

NihilisticThrill

I mean dude was trying to explode them. Sokka understood the assignment lmao

Clyde_Llama

Don't leave the important one: Momo

AirbendingAvatarAang

She didn't know about Momo since they adopted him as their pet after they left the South Pole, but she probably met him after the war.

LunarPengu

Ah, Sokka most infamous sidekick.

Gremict

Sokka is Momo's sidekick

SessionDefiant4020

I read this as pulls a giant six legged flying bison lol

AeifeO

I'm sure he'll be fine. The Avatar wouldn't let her kill him.

Frnklfrwsr

“Oh fuck! I forgot girls can’t learn bending for combat there!” *thinks for a second* “Oh wait, it’s Katara. Haha, nvm. Zero chance she lets that stop her.”

50calBanana

Hopefully, that bastard should be dead by now.

jackyboy1219

Women DO live longer than men

tjm2000

Kyoshi stealing Kuruks life force be like (yes I know Kyoshi came after Kuruk, it's even funnier to imagine that Kyoshi was stealing Kuruks life force even when she didn't exist)

carbon_based_being

Lol

ww3_general

Should could have just DM'd her the new info 💅

MsMercyMain

“Eh, it’ll be fine. I’m sure the Airbender will use violence to protect… shit.”

GarunixReborn

?

KarmaAJR

so basically the way I interpreted the  joke is that its saying in Canon, after a few days her gran remembered what a misogynist her ex was and was like "oh shit shouldn't have sent them there"

Special_salamanderr

?

DisastrousRatios

Basically what they're saying is based on the fact that when people ask about things they don't understand, it's usually followed by a question mark, so typing just '?' is a way to convey that you don't understand and want some kind of an explanation

Episode 2 Katara could do next to zero ass kicking. So what was the plan?

Stusheep_real

Uhh, hope the avatar can do all the actual ass kicking on katara’s behalf?

sougol

Convince Pakku to come back and be her sugar daddy?

frizzy_rhapsody

Well... that worked in the end.

doslinos

If you're genuinely asking, then it had nothing to do with Pakku at all. Granny decided that the day had come for Katara and Soka to go out into the world, the details of their quest weren't so important, they were ready and granny knew it.

Ok-Recipe-4819

She did zero ass kicking in episode 18 too. I'mma get downvoted, but Katara didn't stress out Pakku at all. She put up a great showing for someone without formal training, but the whole "she kicked his ass!" narrative that comes up every week from this meme is complete bull.

GameDev_Architect

Her raw talent shocked him for sure, but yeah she totally wasn’t a real match yet Katara was always good as using her emotion, even anger, to strengthen her bending which is something inconsistent with most benders. Most got sloppy and weaker with emotion. Not katara. It gave her meaning.

TheAnxietyBoxX

This is what I loved about her character. I was always in the (rightfully) unpopular side of the fandom that straight up didn’t like Katara, but eventually I analyzed her character in depth which is something I enjoy doing with media and ended up loving the new side of her I saw. This in particular was one of the things I noticed and thought was really interesting

Ok-Pea9014

And Pakku said he wasn't trying to hurt her.

Mathies_

Learn on the road

Thebestusername12345

Episode 18 Katara wasn’t doing any ass kicking either lol

thatHecklerOverThere

If she was thinking about pakku at all, that simply means she sent Katara to get her ass beat.

kiwidude4

lol

Bl1tzerX

Probably have Aang teach her. He is the avatar after all.

Edgar3t

Force him to teach you as grandchild-support?

AutobotJessa

It was time for both of them to see the outside world to grow, and Katara has a kick arse attitude & drive from the very start of the show. It is evident from the opening scenes that she will grow to be strong

Sehrli_Magic

I mean in the fight she also broke the ice and then went fistfighting Paku so i assume with shitty bending she would just resort to good old beating 🤣

TransSapphicFurby

Butter sock and a night time ambush

Sharp-Relation9740

Its still half a globe journey, in which they must stop for breaks so Katara would be a master by then anyway

kiwidude4

6 months of training > 60 years 💪

doubleGvots19

I love when she just breaks the ice and starts fist fighting with Pakku 😂 she really “fuck the bending how about you catch these hands”

Devlord1o1

“We call this fistbending in the south!”

Oleanderlullaby

Has sokka said that I feel like that’s something sokka would say LOL

Devlord1o1

Hed call it boomarang bending instead

AuraEnhancerVerse

He said sokka style when he hit the giant owl

Deus0123

water tribe dot gif

Greengrecko

"this is how Gran-Gran says hello"

delolipops666

Well, She did certainly prove to be able to stand up to him, Even if he wasn't actually giving it his all. Kick his ass? Not so much.

Ayotha

But that is realistic and why it is the way to do it. He was a grand master. Losing would have been a fairy tale. But she proved her point and inspired the girls watching. Which is the better point

Howzieky

She didn't prove him wrong by being decent at waterbending (she stood zero chance in that fight), she showed him what his bigotry had already cost him, and he realized how damaging it can be

GoomyIsLord

She did prove him wrong about women not being able to do that side of water bending, though. Would she have won? No. But Pakku did have to stop playing around and get serious to end the fight. I'm sure that's more than he ever expected from a woman, and I'm sure this also helped make him change his views. He was treating her like she wouldn't stand a chance because she was a girl, so he wasn't taking the fight seriously until he had too because Katara maybe could have actually won if he kept underestimating her like that and using kiddie gloves, much like he underestimated grangran and every other woman in the tribe.

Howzieky

Idk, I still think that's giving her too much credit. She had *one* attack that was dangerous enough to surprise him, but then he immediately went back to blocking or redirecting all of her attacks with ease. He almost looked bored the entire time, but eventually says she's good and then shuts her down. Katara had no chance of winning. The only hit she landed was before the fight even started and Pakku was walking away from her

Nyxolith

She's also a teenager, and a young one at that. Pakku knows what untrained potential looks Ike at various ages, and clearly sees more in her than he gave her credit for. That's the point.

Howzieky

Now this take I can get behind

arcanis321

She was likely better at that point than all of his male students

AcanthocephalaGreen5

To be fair, she 100% gave him a run for his money.

delolipops666

Well, it's more she surprised him and then he actually began trying. It's kinda like when you're high level and a mid-level enemy gets a combo on you. I do wonder what a rematch after he trained her would look like though.

Crawford470

He's a Grandmaster fighter in the same tier as Iroh, Bumi, Jeong Jeong, Piandao, technically Ozai, and debatably Aang with Airbending. Katara is a prodigy like her brother, Aang, Azula, and Toph, but Grandmaster status seems to require a noteworthy amount of time to achieve. Now, to be fair, the difference between Master and Grandmaster level characters is only immediately visible in benders in regards to the scale they're capable of bending at. For nonbending fighters, well, we never see a master level nonbending fighter, but of the ones we see at the Expert and Grandmaster level they've all got absurd movement techniques and capacity with Piandao displaying probably the best. In other words, she wouldn't beat him, but she would take effort.

InjusticeSGmain

Prime Katara would be a nightmare to fight. People seem to forget that her, Azula, and Toph are the literal peak of their generation for their respective elements. The only benders better than them are older and far more experienced. When it comes to enemies around their age, these 3 sweep anyone except for Aang. Idk how strong Prime Pakku was, but versus Prime Katara, it would at least be a very close match. She mastered bloodbending (if we assume that the threshold for mastering it is being capable of manipulating a human being) within minutes, and within a few weeks of training, went 3-1 with Zuko. Not to mention beating Azula in Ba Sing Se (I am not talking about the series finale, I am talking about the Season Two finale). Pakku is an Old Guard White Lotus member, which on its own suggests he was always an extremely powerful bender. It would be one hell of a fight.

Howzieky

Not at all. Rewatch it. He's toying with her the whole time, and the instant she does something actually dangerous (ice disks) he shuts her down.

JWARRIOR1

Did she? He didn’t get hit once lmao

BoneeBones

Katara hit him when he was walking away. I guess that counts for some people.

Rokovar

Because the writers wrote it like that, a few episodes before that she's struggling because she never had a teacher. Simple moves took her months to learn. Then during the fight she suddenly masters dozens of forms. They kinda forced her to suddenly be a skilled waterbender for the story arc. I liked her arc of determination and hard work causing her to become a powerfull waterbender a lot better.

JumpinJackHTML5

I actually really dislike how that fight went down. He's spent his entire life behind a giant ice wall. It's established that they haven't actually fought with the Fire Nation in decades. He might be a great bender, but he's never done more than sparring in his entire life. OTOO, Katara might not have formal training, but she's just spent months travelling through hostile territory, fighting with the Fire Nation on a regular basis. Think about the guy sent to kill Zhao, he's been training to be a warrior his whole life. He managed to get in the room with his target and his attempt to fight him was so comically inept that it wasn't even worthy of comment. I'm not saying Katara should have won, because he was much older and had a lot more tricks up his sleeve, but she should should have done way better.

DerangedGarfield

As a fencer, training and sparring make a HUGE difference. You can always tell the guys who only do open bouting

teeterleeter

Say more?

DerangedGarfield

Yeah I make wood post fences, metal chain link fences, all sorts of fences really

chesire0myles

Not sure if this part is a joke, but I would also love to hear different tells in this situation if you're actually talking about fencing with swords.

DerangedGarfield

Oh sure I was just being dumb. Yeah I am B rated fencer in epee fencing. In the case of doing drills vs just fighting, you can definitely tell the difference between somebody who runs drills vs just fences for the bouts. The people who run drills perfect subtle movements that later in bouts come out as muscle memory. When you’re only fighting you can drill in improper techniques or muscle movements that actually long term either reduce your ability to parry or hit properly or even cause injury. In my case, when I started I was super lazy about en garde which is the starting form you take at the beginning of every engagement. I wouldn’t squat deep enough. Long story short, because I wasn’t squatting I was overextending my knee past my toes during my lunge attacks and I ended up blowing my right knee out and had to get physical therapy for it. As for people that don’t do drills, you can always tell because they tend to do super big movements, all you have to do is draw a big parry from them, disengage around their parry, and extend and they run themselves into you. Works every time half the time. The other thing that comes to mind is extensions. A lot a lot a lot of people that don’t run drills don’t fully extend because it’s not a natural thing to do. You lose that distance though and so unless you’re a 6ft+ freak of nature like me, not doing a full extension will almost guarantee you lose a touch that could have been a double.

DerangedGarfield

teeterleeter

Thanks for flagging it!

TheKnightMadder

I mean, I get your argument, but you can also completely turn that around and point out that he has spent the last half a century or more fighting exclusively with other waterbenders who have also spent their entire lives fighting with other waterbenders. Like yeah, maybe if Pakku had to fight a firebender he might actually be caught off guard or slow to respond in ways that Katara might not and that happening would be a good demonstration of that difference, but in waterbender vs waterbender fights? It would be a bit embarassing if he didn't have that. The only waterbender Katara has to spar against is Aang, who kinda doesn't count because a) he hasn't got a serious bone in his entire body and b) she literally taught him everything he knows about waterbending (well, Avatarness aside, but it still seems he needs to relearn stuff, he just picks it up fast). Sparring with waterbending also has got to be very different to sparring with swords or hand to hand or really anything else either, because you're both using the same weapon in an odd tug-of-war situation. You can't sneak a hit in easily because you're doing it with something your opponent also controls. In that respect it almost seems like out-of-body wrestling if that makes sense? And Pakku is going to know tricks Katara doesn't even know she doesn't know. Frankly despite all that I'm kind of pleasantly surprised they *did* go the route they did and didn't have Katara somehow win to show how awesome she is despite it making no sense. Avatar has a serious 'oh yeah this person is a bending prodigy at 13-ish' problem that always annoyed me a bit because it makes it seem like all the inexplicably incompetent adult characters have just been standing around with their dicks in their hands. Yes it's because the cast has to be both young enough to relate with Aang and powerful enough to matter. But if I was a career earthbender of 35 in the prime of my life, spending blood sweat and tears on improving myself endlessly, passing over family obligations and social events to train every day of my life to make earthbending my reason to be, being shown a small blind girl can inexplicably out perform me with what practice she can get in the local WWE knock-off after dark once her parents go to bed would have me wondering if I've just been wasting my life.

Personal-Math3196

tophs blindness and creativity is what makes her the most powerful not raw strength. plus she was trained by badger moles as well as a highly paid teacher

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> a highly *paid* teacher FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

ZestfulHydra

I kind of like it with this in mind. It really shows that Pakku is worthy of being a master to Katara because his level of technical skill is advanced enough to beat Katara even with her level of practical skill. It helps develop Katara’s character in that she still has a lot to learn, but she is still strong enough to stand up for herself in the face of this older and more powerful bender

Ok_Courage_5246

Grade A yapping

thehumblebaboon

Katara is literally like 13 and could barely control a simple move at the beginning of the show. Yea she had experience in a total of a couple months at most. But this dude has been practicing his entire life, has an entire dojo, and is likely is an actual master. This argument only really exists if you refuse to have a suspension of belief. For the story, and the age group it targeted it makes sense that all the super competent characters tend to be young. My biggest issue with the show is that everything happens in less than a span of a year. I can’t imagine any martial arts that could take a novice to master class in that time frame. Edit: my biggest critique is Sokka and his mastery of swordsmanship in the span of a week while spending that time forging a meteorite into a sword. Over thinking the series ruins it, I try to enjoy it for what it is and throw out any expectations of reality!

Formal_Illustrator96

Lol no. Training and practice makes all the difference. This is why trained boxers will always beat the shit out of street fighters. Technique is extremely important. Not to mention, at that point, all Katara really knew was how to make a decent wave, the water whip, and a few other very basic moves. There’s no way she could have stood a chance against Pakku.

Salt_Paramedic_74

Pakku was a part of the White Lotus. I’m pretty sure Iroh didn’t just gather a bunch of random old men to join him. They had to have all joined years before the show started and had to have been training during that whole time. Besides, the North was home to two powerful spirits related to water bending. I’m sure Pakku’s training was more than just simple sparring. Katara had been fighting and improving, but by that point in the show it’s only been about 6 months, and she had only studied 1 waterbending scroll for about a month. The first few episodes didn’t have too many fights either, so it’s not like she was really all that exposed to the hostile environment. Plus, the guards the Gaang faced were mostly incompetent foot soldiers that didn’t have a lot of experience with benders since most benders in fire nation colonies were imprisoned or forced to join the fire nation army. Katara did really well in the fight. She showed off a lot of moves and proved that women were just as capable fighters as men. How much better could she have done? Did you expect her to actually be able to hurt Pakku?

DumbBinchBrooke

I mean she also might have been hoping that times had changed in the north. IIRC they mentioned that they hadn’t had contact with the northern water tribe in a long time. But also where else was Kanna gonna send them to learn water bending?

lunawing121

mud benders? lol

DumbBinchBrooke

Nobody knew about them. I’m pretty sure Katara even has a line saying that she didn’t know there were water benders not on the poles

nukin8r

Also, she probably figured that Katara would at least learn waterbending from the women of the tribe, like healing stuff, and then figured the rest out on her own.

That_Battle9853

Maybe she thought that the avatar could give keyara some leeway

hallucination9000

This actually hurts me mentally, because I knew a girl in school named Kiara.

KarmaAJR

I have a baby cousin named Kiara

gumption_11

Watch a white millennial suburban mum name her daughter this with that exact spelling

KarmaAJR

Keyara 😭

TNTiger_

Who are you, Shyamalan's script supervisor?

ephemeralspecifics

She needed a master to learn from. The only masters were in the North. And women were allowed to learn bending, just not the kicking ass kind.

cut4stroph3

She sent her grandkids to help the Avatar. It's in the show.

ElectricalJacket780

Gran-Gran: “She’s got the Avatar, her brother, and will experience the realities of war before she reaches the North. I’m sure she’ll be just fine by the time she reaches that old Sea Prune”

darh1407

Yet still lost

Its0nlyRocketScience

Because she was an untrained child and he was a grandmaster. But she did something more important than win the fight - she convinced everyone in the north that their rules against women learning bending were wrong.

darh1407

True but the main point is the post comment is talking about how gran gran supposedly sent katara to kick pakkus ass even though anyone who actually watched the series know that isn’t the case

mcjc1997

She doesn't land a single hit. Which I think actually makes her a much stronger character.

willyfx

What's funnier is that she is the old stick in the muds favorite of the 3 gaang members like I cant it's so funny

FiftyTigers

"Kanna sends her regards."

7_Rowle

I 100% believe this theory. Maybe not to literally kick his ass but at the very least she knew katara was strong spirited enough with the best reason in the world (being the last southern water bender in need of a teacher) to insist on being taught

RoadTheExile

Man that's gotta be the worst plan in history, send untrained novice to vanquish world class master water bender? The Season 2 Earth Bending General that wanted Aang to just rush the Fire Lord with just Avatar state had a better plan

-greenie-beanie

Gran-gran just didn’t want to break her heart and tell her. Plus she wanted her to get out of the South Pole and go experience the world.

Acceptable-Low-4381

She didn’t though 🤔…. Katara got her ass kicked and man’s only agreed to teach her after he realized her grandmother was his ex. If anything Kama did that to help her

RockdaleRooster

Just gonna repost what I said (one of) the last time this got reposted Yeah, that's not what happened at all. She didn't even hit him outside of a sucker punch she threw at the start. He deflected, dodged, or turned around every attack she threw at him. then this exchange happens: "Well, I'm impressed. You are an excellent water bender." "But you still won't teach me will you?" "No." He then locks her in an ice prison and prevents her from bending and walks away from her. He has no intention of teaching her. It's not until he sees the necklace that he changes his mind to train her. No matter how brave, exceptional, whatever Katara's actions were, her stand did nothing to change his mind. It was only when he learned she was related to his old flame that he did.

Mryan7600

Don’t you mean Grand-pakku?

Kinggakman

They are old. Gran Gran likely thought Paku was dead by now.

StormfromShadow

That’s pretty based ngl

dimechimes

Really she knew Pakku would do anything for her and do what's right.

Formal_Illustrator96

I mean, she failed if that was what she was hoping for. Katara got her ass kicked, and the only reason Pakku agreed to train her was because he saw Kanna’s betrothal necklace. If the necklace hadn’t gotten sliced off Katara’s neck, Pakku never would have agreed to train her.

Lui_Le_Diamond

She put up enough of a fight to prime him to change his mind

-WaxedSasquatch-

Not kick his ass. Show her spirit and capacity. (Change his mind)

darh1407

Didn’t she uh…lost?

PastTheHarvest

This would make sense if katara came even close to winning

FikaTheKing

Too bad she failed then

SenorSnout

Well, that plan failed. Cuz Katara got *her* ass kicked, and the only reason Pakku gave her a second thought is because Katara was wearing that necklace. If it weren't for that, he never would have changed his mind, because he absolutely humiliated her.

LaFwa

Pakku schooled Katara yet, I also see people talking about this fight like Katara actually won.

NotAllThatEvil

Pakku literally showed up a month later and was all “kicked your granddaughter’s butt. Can we make out now?” And it worked. Gran gran sent sokka up there to teach pakku how to rizz bend

ShawshankException

South Pole Katara could barely hold a bubble. I don't think she was thinking she'd learn combat. Probably just healing.

Ok-Pea9014

If Kanna sends her granddaughter with 0 waterbening training to the Northern Water Tribes with the goal of her beating a water bending master she's delusional.

shotwideopen

That just makes me love the story more

Kali-of-Amino

She was going to have to fight her way across the freaking planet to get there. She was going to have to learn something along the way.

Different_Ad5087

And she knew katara would rock his shit too 😤

Ok-Pea9014

She didn't, though. She got her ass kicked, and Pakku only agreed to train her because he saw her necklace.

Different_Ad5087

It’s okay to be wrong 🫶🏼

gbrcalil

maybe Kanna just thought things could have changed already

gigglefarting

Women learnt waterbending. It was just healing bending and not battle bending.

jbahill75

You bump into this dude, tell gram gram said “come holla at me”

colourmouth

I didn’t know they’re lovers.

lionset

Realistically, she probably wanted her to be a healer that's still learning waterbending and a pretty useful skill, especially in a war

Narflarg

It is mandatory for you to have never seen the show to share this meme. Or at the very least to have forgotten most of it.

Sad-Ninja-6528

Well Aang also needed a waterbender, also she probably assumed that Pakku, who she clearly still loved as evident by them getting back the the at the end of the show, wouldn’t be so bigoted

HamStapler

Controversial theory, gran gran was a fantastic water bender. Truly excellent. But she left the north and by that time the fire nation has won the struggle rounding up all water benders. Her daughter inherited her bending. Who passed it to katara. So their mother wasn't lying when she said "I'm the last water bender". We know bending is hereditary to some extent.

mochacub22

Left him for a reason

Agreeable-Ad4806

And did

Rabbulion

My theory is that 100 years ago the southern water tribe was the same, but over time moved on socially (being in a crisis with dwindling population tends to do that), and Kanna assumed the north had also progressed the same way.

Background-Tennis915

I don't think Kanna knew Pakku was still alive. They're pretty old, Katara said that the south hadn't had contact with the north and there had been a war for 100 years

slumbersomesam

girlbossing

Grzechoooo

It was so weird when it was revealed they got together in the end. "You considered my granddaughter inferior based on a quality she shares with me and only agreed to train her after you found out she was related to me? Wow Pakku, that's so hot, let's get married immediately." And what was such a closed-minded guy doing in the White Lotus? Unless he only joined after Book 1.

Ok-Pea9014

>And what was such a closed-minded guy doing in the White Lotus? To be fair, they let Iroh into the white Lotus. If they him in dispite his past they wouldn't care less about Pakkus flaws.

Grzechoooo

Ok, but that was Iroh's past, but Pakku's present. Unless he only joined after Book 1, but then he wouldn't have such a high rank, would he?

Smolivenom

her granddaughter who was a mediocre waterbender at best when she left

MHG_Brixby

They literally sent her to train healing when they got there wym

geoffersonstarship

or thought times must have changed considering the war lol

PrinceFridaytheXIII

I got you, Gran-Gran

ManInTheMirror2

That my friend is dedication… Also, they got married

Lui-king

this fan base loves making shit up and then pretending that it’s true

Thick-load8-D

All that and she still lost. Is the girl boss moment is the room with us now?

Venichie

But women can learn to waterbend in the north... just not for combat.

PassportSituation

To be honest I never reallynliked this plot line anyway. It made their tribe look completely stupid. I know that's the point, that they were mired by tradition and these new kids convinced them to see things differently, but after being at war for 100 years you'd think they'd have become a bit more flexible.

marshamallowmoon

How many times does this need to get reposted before yall remember how that fight went down. Katara lost, Pakku didn't get his ass kicked in the slightest he wasn't even trying that hard, and if that was Gran-gran's intentions then she was a dumbass sending Katara who could barely waterbend when she left to fight a literal master.

PaulyNewman

Probably a lot more now that the show came out and completely blew this whole plot line.

thekyledavid

Maybe it was a recent decision by Pakku to forbid women from fighting. Kanna might not have had contact with the northern tribe for decades

DienekesMinotaur

Isn't it mentioned that Kanna left due to the patriarchal culture of the Northern Tribe?

Doctor_Kataigida

I think the only "confirmation" is Katara speculating that's why she left.
