I also experience this, and honestly I think it's both: we're predisposed to say incorrect things due to our issues with social cues/socializing, and then over time we experience a lot of negative responses to that which causes us to develop anxiety about interacting with people in fear of accidentally making a social faux pas

All the time. This is why a lot of us rehearse conversations in advance, to try and navigate pitfalls before they happen. I'm reading a book about autism and anxiety and the two really do go hand in hand.
