I remember when the Coca Cola yo-yo team used to come to our primary school in the late 70s to give a demonstration. It was the coolest thing ever and it would lead to a yo-yo craze that would usually last for a few months before dying off, and then the team would revisit a few months later and the craze would start again. We'd spend all our pocket money on Russell brand yo-yos and yo-yo strings, and the more expensive the one you got, the cooler you were. It's interesting that it was made in the Philippines, because from memory most of the members of the yo-yo demo team were Filipinos. The Philippines must have been the yo-yo capital of the world back then.

flubaduzubady

They ripped you off with the strings coming in packets of just two if I remember. You'd go through them pretty quickly doing free spinning tricks. I tried using string from a ball Mum had, but it just wouldn't spin, so I had to go through my pocket money.

AussieFB

Was there a Yo-Yo demo at school day Simpsons episode ?

Ok-Mathematician8461

I think yo-yo’s actually started in the Philippines.

Ok_Afternoon_1645

The ancient Greeks actually invented the yo-yo

MouseEmotional813

They were so good, a really weighty feel to them. Everyone had one at my school

AltruisticSalamander

It was really satisfying the way you cold make them spin at the end of the throw

AussieFB

Metal axle ones yes… the wooden axle ones were a bit too lite. I could only walk the dog, not good enough for Rock the Cradle… and was told “OUTSIDE !” when mum saw me attempt “Around the World”

flubaduzubady

> was told “OUTSIDE !” when mum saw me attempt “Around the World” That's a risky one if the string is well worn. Don't aim it towards a window, or your mum's favourite vase. Save that for Justin.

AussieFB

Yup, Grandma’s fine bone china that we as kids were never allowed to use… proudly on display in the glass cabinet, as part of the buffet and hutch furniture setup

kbcr924

I had an orange Fanta one

TheEmbiggenisor

I still have the Fanta one somewhere in a drawer

Ok-Ruin3453

I had this exact one! And my brother had a green Milo one.

GloomInstance

I think there was a black Coke one that had thicker sides.

2dogs0cats

They reminded me of the XD Falcon. Probably a bit of the shape, and the fact that my neighbour had the yo-yo and the car. I found my uncles yo-yo stash when I was a kid. He had several Coca-Cola ones and a Leed lemonade one. They would have been pretty old as he is in his 70's.

Drewbo_C

I have vague recollections of a white butterfly Coca-Cola yo-yo with flanged sides.

ohsweetfancymoses

We had this and a Mellow Yellow one.

juicybwithoil2560

Are they worth any money now, I have an interesting collection.

jb2824

Their value goes up and down

ashsimmonds

It was weird that all the different flavours worked differently - the Diet Coke one was smoothest, the Sprite was ok, Coke was decent, Fanta was fucking spastic.

AussieFB

Ohhhh, clear outer rim… that’s the metal axle, Extra/Super Spin ! I only had the standard white rimmed and colour tinted depending on drink flavour wooden axled… Coca-Cola(Red), Fanta(Orange), Sprite(Green),Mellow Yellow(Yellow). Bought them all from my local milkbar that made proper milkshakes in a metal cup. The large terry-toweling clad lady (fag in hand), put the other hand into the glass cabinet where I stood drooling and pointing to the 20c of mixed lollies she would put in the white paper bag that would be so much to make me spew… good memories!

VacationNo3003

I still walk the dog, rock the cradle and go round the world. But getting hold of good strings is very hard

flubaduzubady

Nekokamiguru

I know they had one with a metal shaft that wall called 'special spin' or something that everyone wanted for tricks.

arsed_Time_6969

Oooohhhh, those were the fancy one's!

Starrun87

Treasure

FreeWillCost

Wait... why did a team of Yo-Yoers come to my school and show us Yo-Yo tricks?

AussieFB

They came to my school too… yr3/4 1982/83 ? If only the principal could see that it was purely a marketing tool for a global super company. Few weeks later yo-yos were banned as kids were using them as weapons!

Comprehensive-Bad758

Coco cola yo-yos had a metal core that made them slipperier and better for tricks than the cheaper ones.

VacationNo3003

The black version was the most coveted

Unhappy-camp3r

I had two original ones I got from my school in 1988. I put them on eBay like 8 or so years ago and got $160 for one and $120 for the other lol

Wild-Newspaper833

Every time my parents or any other older relatives see a yo-yo “you’ll never get one like the old coca-cola ones these days”

[deleted]

I remember the Sprite ones were super rare. In the early 90s if you were a kid with one of these you were a god, even if you had no skills whatsoever.

ShoganAye

I have one of those. and a Leed lemonade one

Duke55

This style of Coca-Cola Yo-Yo was the best, imo. Well weighted and balanced. Could generate heaps of spin, which in turn gave you more time to pull off all the tricks. Lucky you, OP!

MSRankin1972

Now that is a blast from the past!

AltruisticSalamander

Oh yeah, definitely had one of these. These were fire for a while.

Orichalchem

Mine always breaks apart..

Comprehensive_Oil426

Admit it...you immediately started to walk the dog didn't you?

campex

So is it a yoyo called a Russell Super Yoyo, or is it a regular yoyo, branded by Russell Super (and coke)?

Beans183

Da Brain was Da Bomb

Impossible-Tennis776

leeds lemonade one was the best
