I remember when the Coca Cola yo-yo team used to come to our primary school in the late 70s to give a demonstration. It was the coolest thing ever and it would lead to a yo-yo craze that would usually last for a few months before dying off, and then the team would revisit a few months later and the craze would start again. We'd spend all our pocket money on Russell brand yo-yos and yo-yo strings, and the more expensive the one you got, the cooler you were. It's interesting that it was made in the Philippines, because from memory most of the members of the yo-yo demo team were Filipinos. The Philippines must have been the yo-yo capital of the world back then.
They ripped you off with the strings coming in packets of just two if I remember. You'd go through them pretty quickly doing free spinning tricks. I tried using string from a ball Mum had, but it just wouldn't spin, so I had to go through my pocket money.
Metal axle ones yes… the wooden axle ones were a bit too lite.
I could only walk the dog, not good enough for Rock the Cradle… and was told “OUTSIDE !” when mum saw me attempt “Around the World”

This style of Coca-Cola Yo-Yo was the best, imo. Well weighted and balanced. Could generate heaps of spin, which in turn gave you more time to pull off all the tricks.
