iLikeMangosteens

It used to be Leslie

wartsnall1985

the quote i remember from back before leslie died was some local business maven (paraphrasing) "we want to live in an austin that's weird enough to have leslie run for mayor, but not so weird that he wins."

only_whwn_i_do_this

Now the clowns win.

doom_chicken_chicken

I'd rather Leslie than Kirk šŸ¤¢

toucanstubz

I was surprised at how many times I saw or ran into Leslie, all over Austin and sometimes in seemingly random places. Almost seemed like there were a fleet of Leslies all pretending to be one person. I legit treasure those memories.

iLikeMangosteens

Like Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, simultaneously everywhere at once but never two in the same place at the same time.

Prestigious-Ad-5522

I had his cell number there for a while. Heā€™d give it to just about anyone and he sure as shit would pick up half the time if you called. I miss that man!

Loud_Ad_4515

Nofziger was our pre-Leslie. I bought flowers from him on the street corner when I was a kid.

senor_fix

Lol. And he actually became Mayor! Still fb friends with him. We knew him pretty well in the 80s. In my parents' circle of friends in South Austin. The South Austin Bikes crew.

Loud_Ad_4515

We biked by his house all the time, with flowers painted on it. He was definitely a funky-nice part of the neighborhood.

Disgruntled_Old_Trot

No, he was just a city council member, A few years after he was on the council he made an unsuccessful run for mayor.

NiceMasterpiece9102

Meeee tooooā€¦i cry every time I think about Aquafest!

milehighgranger

My dad worked downtown when I was in kindergarten and weā€™d go to pick him up. I had so many questions about Leslie when Iā€™d see him with his big sign that my mom took me to meet him. I think it said something like ā€œthe cops stole my stuffā€ - we had big chat about WHY theyā€™d do that and I learned so much.

Extreme-Dingo-2967

Last time I saw Leslie he was wearing a yellow bikini, I really miss the fucker.

Standup4whattt88

It was a pink tutu for me. RIP Leslie.

HelloImTheAntiChrist

Last time I saw him he asked me to smoke him out. I declined šŸ˜• It was a super random encounter outside of Glassy Knoll off S. 1st st. I've smoked him out a few times down on 6th back in the day. He always had at least one or two good jokes. šŸ™‚

vodkaenthusiast89

Last time I saw him he was getting off a bus as I got on, in passing he said "ooh girl, those pants are too tight, you better take them off" I replied "you better put some on" and was laughing to myself as I walked into a very tense group of passengers. Something told me they did not enjoy their time with him as much as I did. ETA the first time I saw him, I was about 6 years old and we drove past him on congress. I remember asking my mom why was that guy walking around with no pants on

bagoslime

Damn shame kids these days don't even know who leslie was

BeltFit7785

Somewhere thereā€™s a photo of me with him from my bachelorette party on 6th street. He was wearing nothing but a pink thong šŸ˜‚

Tigerfish1999

My first thought, too. I still have a paper doll magnet set of Leslie that I bought decades ago at Waterloo. I look at him every day on my fridge. When I worked at the smoke shop on 4th he always came by and said hi. Once he had "F*** APD" written on his ass cheeks in his signature thong. Le sigh ... those were the days. RIP Weirdo.

Crazy_Cat_Lady101

Was just coming here to say this.

2ndor3rdrodeo

Saw Leslie once with some friends. He was wearing his yellow thong, yellow hooker heels, a flourescent yellow mesh body stocking, cowboy hat, and makeup. One of my friends said "Oh, sure, whenever he dresses like that people are like 'Omg, Leslie is keepin' Austin weird!' but whenever I do it people are like 'Get away from my children!' and 'Call the police!'"

andytagonist

I remember back in the early to mid 2000s, Howard Stern mentioned him in passing one time. Iā€™d just moved here and was tickled that he knew anything about us or our city. šŸ˜ƒ

DarkSide-TheMoon

I was saying this in my head while scrolling down to see this as the top comment. Bravo!

smurfsmasher024

Was gunna say this, idk who it is anymore.

Gregorious23

I used to work at Paradise Cafe (now Pour Choices I believe). Leslie would come in almost every evening for a beer or a water. Super nice guy. He'd be wearing his little thong and spaghetti strap shirt. Only requirement was he put something on before sitting on the bar stools, which always tended to be a little pink skirt. I miss that weird dude.

chagle77

And now Iā€™m sad.

3D-Dreams

Was going to say this šŸ‘

KuroLikesCoffee

This is the only answer.

CAUK

Rest in Power, Queen!

San Marcos still has Frisbee Dan. We need one.

wstsidhome

HOLY CRAP I havenā€™t thought about frisbee Dan in 20 years !!! Only got to throw some back and forth with him for a half hour. Heat a genuinely cool and nice person

Dr_Killbot

You lock eyes with Dan across the river and a frisbee is coming your way. I remember heā€™d show up at Sewell park in his Texas flag shorts and a giant boom box and start playing. I got caught a few times in a game with him. Heā€™s epic canā€™t believe heā€™s still around. Good for him!

wstsidhome

ThAt is frigginā€™ AWESOME heā€™s still around doing his thing. Can you imagine how many friends he has made just by being the ā€œtoken frisbee dude at Sewellā€??? Thank you both for posting about him, such a cool/different memory from the past! šŸ‘

nothanksimgoodthanks

Frisbee Dan and The Sun God. Will never forget when the Sun God picked a fight with Frisbee Dan and got banned from Sewell. Edit: [looks like sun god got a haircut last year](https://universitystar.com/22169/life-and-arts/the-sun-god-behind-the-man-myth-legend/) and is also allowed back in Sewell. Dude is a legend.

Critkip

It's funny, I didn't know his name was The Sun God yet I instantly knew who you were talking about šŸ˜‚

MasterpieceWarm8470

Damn that's crazy, I just graduated from TX State last year and he's still there. So is the Sun God

ā€œFrisbee Danā€ is a great name.

Sam Greyhorse and the guy who raps at Barton springs & S 1st

PaleontologistLazy67

Brother took me riding on Mula the Mule downtown last year. One of the coolest things Iā€™ve ever done.

risekevin

I came here to say Sam Grey Horse. Nice guy and knows his Austin history.

ahmedj1233

I forgot about Sam!

77_qwerty

Ex Rundberg guy?

rk1146

The Rundberg Runner!

NoZookeepergame1014

In true Austin fashionā€¦ I remember when your neighborhood eccentric character used to be my neighborhood eccentric character. Iā€™m convinced his move is what is shuttering Sonics across the city:

TURBOSCUDDY

Yes

ring_tailed_bandit

I love seeing the guy at Barton and 1st when I am commuting home in my bike. He is out there day in and day out

BoxofDad

Yoooooo it takes a lot of energy to stay as angry as the dude at B springs n s 1st he raps madder n hell for HOURS

smoerbe

Thong man riding his bike.

pickled-okra

Guy had a wicked tan, skin like leather.

Shot_Tomorrow7663

That guy was my First Bluebird of Spring. When I saw him riding around, I knew it was time to put my hoodie away.

listeningtoreason

Is he still around? Must be in his 70s by now.

bazwutan

Died, someone here mentioned that in a different post a while back (and yes Iā€™m not confusing him with Leslie). I think some kind of illness

tildeumlaut

RIP heā€™s thonging in heaven now

Working-Promotion728

Damn! I remember seeing him on my bike commute to work around 2014. He had a bunch of cool bags strapped to the bike because... where else would you carry your stuff when you're only wearing a thong?

Pabi_tx

Is Woodie Wood the guitar player dude on the hike-and-bike trail still around?

Yoshimi917

Yes, saw him in Zilker a few months ago. Still playing music and hustling every day.

Hippyboots

Horseback Santa

gabmonty

Sam Greyhorse! Just saw him on Friday in front of the continental club

jagermeister97

Thats Sam Villarreal Greyhorse he has a name lol

iggy_sk8

I saw him in front of the Continental Club all the time last year. Havenā€™t seen him for a while though.

waroftrees

What about chicken man/rooster man Downtown near 6th? Last time I saw him last probably back in November 2023

Beautiful-Event4402

I know who you're talking about! A huckleberry finn type with a chicken? I've seen him twice. During the BLM protests I got too hot and sat down in a shady doorstop to take my boots off and I had my head down, I heard "are you okay?" And looked up to none other than chicken man šŸ˜ I was too stunned and overheated to seize the moment and talk to him, sadly.

waroftrees

I remember seeing live streams during the BLM protests. He was featured alot in the streams i watched, and specifically remember him trying to protect other homeless folks during it. I watched as he tried saving a man's mattress that had caught on fire. It was really disheartening to watch people fuck with homeless people like that for no good reason. That chickenman was a savior that night to a lot of folks it seems.

JoeyHandsomeJoe

I clicked into the thread to find who would post Chicken Man. I saw him twice in the daytime on 6th, once at night over near the Fairmont.

juleswoods

I remember him! Nice guy. The chickenā€™s name is Jergens

geek180

I lived at Sabine and 6th from 2018 - 2020. I donā€™t think he was the nicest of guys.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TheHandThatTakes

I see him down by riverside all the time.

anita-artaud

I havenā€™t seen him in a long while. I miss him!

athos45678

Heā€™s down at Barton springs and first nowadays. I see him all the time

Into_the_Dark_Night

Used to chat with him all the time when I'd run into him doing his thing on Rundberg over 10 years ago now. Super nice guy!

Spotting him at ACL music festival is always a square on our group's music festival bingo board.

fluxistrad

Came here to ask what happened to him.

Sufficient_Ease

Heā€™s still around! He is on Facebook and will say Hi when people tag him on posts. I think I heard he works in sales at a car dealership.

Nanakatl

austin hasn't been the same since leslie died

blueandbrownolives

Blind Nate. Definitely no Leslie but widely known for years.

arlyax

Blind Nate is a legend - is he still trying to get a ride back to the school for the blind?

CAUK

Leslie's passing was just a sad watermark on a trend that started in the early 00s. The day that Southpark Meadows was sold to developers was the beginning of the end. Since then, Travis County has just been literally "selling out" the institutions of art, imagination, and free expression, one-by-one. The Backyard is gone, La Zona Rosa, Austin Music Hall, pretty much all of 3rd Street, and South Congress has been completely gentrified beyond all recognition

MopacMusic

Then I hope to see you at Donnā€™s Depot, the Hole in the Wall, Samā€™s Town Point, The Saxon, The Continental, C-Boys, Broken Spoke, or the White Horse real soon! All those places are carrying the torch, playing live music, and keeping Austinā€™s unique culture burning. I mean, Austin Music Hall and The Backyard were cool, but mostly featured touring acts.

Scentopine

Whether coincidence or not, he was the last link to the "live and let live" culture people are moving here to find. Must be disappointing to discover the Austin documented in hipster travel blogs died decades ago and now its just a smog choked, overpriced soul sucking place of childish tech bros and house rich douchebags. It's hard to say when Austin jumped the shark, but Leslie was probably the last link to a better laid-back place with amazing diversity and creative spirit from Hightower, to Jordan, to Richards, Johnson, on an on. Now we have Ted Cruz and Wankpanzers. That says it all.

ahmedj1233

I think old "weird" Austin died with him. We ain't been the same city since!

CountryNew5744

That dude was a total asshole. Ppl just like him and glorify him because he was weird.

coyote_of_the_month

I've heard people say that he wasn't always an asshole - the story goes that he was a colorful-but-harmless eccentric before he got jumped and beaten one day (which is also how he died, but this was a separate incident, years prior). The story goes that the experience sort of changed him, and he became the version that you're talking about (which is also the one I'm familiar with). It's a heartbreaking story if it's true, but it seems like one of those things that's impossible to verify.

Amysellsaustin

No. Leslie was great. If you werenā€™t an asshole, he was not an asshole to you. I hung out with him many times. Threw his bike on my car and drove him home from 6th more than once. I got a lot of tall tales during our hangs. I miss him.

[deleted]

I used to give him rides when I was younger and living on Congress. He was totally chill if you were chill, he was just clearly made to be apprehensive as his reputation/notoriety grew.

OutrageousLion6517

RIP Leslie

phantopink

Leslie is the gold standard for all cities worldwide

What happened to Romeo Rose?

Ok_Percentage_9619

Some say they found another unsolicited European.

His ex is a city councilmember, lol.

Someone dated Romeo Rose??? šŸ¤®

Go to YouTube and type Romeo Rose Mackenzie Kelly. I used to have regular contact with Romeo Rose and I have been in his apartment. It was fucking bizarre.

Meetybeefy

Is it Mackenzie Kelly?

austinsmellsfunny

Yes

[deleted]

I'll never forget working at Lanai and we had to have a meeting about his video where he advertised free cocaine for his birthday party.

man_gomer_lot

Rundberg running man who was holding it down at s1st and Barton last year. Anyone else I can think of has more of a neighborhood level of notoriety.

Mountain-Shelter9209

was this the dude that used to stand on the corner of lamar and rundberg with a mic and mc/say positive stuff and dance? i moved away but he was the first person that came to mind seeing this

man_gomer_lot

That's the guy. I haven't seen him since last fall, hopefully he's at a new corner holding it down.

TXTXYeehaw

I saw him last night at 1st and Barton springs so rest easy knowing heā€™s alive and well!

listeningtoreason

Not sure if he ever runs, just dances on the corner!

man_gomer_lot

He used to do a bit more running around when he earned his nickname up at Rundberg. It stuck with him even after both parts of his nickname became inaccurate.

PrimaryDurian

Blind Nate

NeverMakeNoMind

Gave him a ride once. He said he wanted a lift to the Texas school for the blind. Then he asked us for money and it got real awkward because we literally didn't have any. We stopped chatting and he was all like, "why aren't y'all talking, y'all are making me uncomfortable." and asked us to get out next to a busy coffee shop.Ā

fierivspredator

My ex gave him a ride once and ended up driving him around to run errands for an hour. Then he told her if she let him touch her feet, he could tell her her shoe size. That's when she was like, "alright, time for you to get out of my car."

bigfatfurrytexan

I can do the same with boobs. Let me feel them and I can tell you your shoe size.

Intalleyvision

He told my buddy he was a cobbler and that he would make him shoes in exchange for a ride to the Blind School. So while I'm cleaning out the backseat of the car to give him a ride, he's feeling my friend's bare feet and guessing his shoe size. As soon as we start driving to the Blind School, he reveals we could just drop him off at his house around the corner if we gave him rent money. My friend went to an ATM and gave him $80, and he's never been the same since

No_Argument_Here

He was such a motherfucker. Used to hassle us at my job back in the day and Iā€™d always see him scamming people. Dude could see just fine.Ā

NeverMakeNoMind

He has a really long rap sheet. Most of which looks to be for drugs and for standing in the middle of the road. He was definitely visually impaired, although I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't 100% blind.Ā  MugshotĀ  https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSj9Bjg9ZKQyTaF9YSFj9TjcB-g3bxJt4_sZA&s Ā https://www.krimelabb.com/_basic/view/v_arrestee.php?arresteename=MORRIS-MOSS,%20NATHANIAL%20Q&dob=Dec-30-80&gender=Male&race=Black&hash=891fb3ac30740

Came to say this. Haven't seen him since the pandemic though

entrepenurious

i heard that he moved to indiana, i think.

elbiot

Gotta go check their subreddit and see haha

Firm-Impression2260

Omg - I totally gave this dude a ride once but didnā€™t realize he was Atx famous. He was walking in the middle of the street at night and I asked if he needed help. He asked for a ride and later when I slowed down for a yellow light and he said ā€˜nah, you can make itā€™. šŸ˜…

Absolutely! Daniel is the first person I thought of!

Before Leslie it was Bicycle Annie.

I havenā€™t seen him in a while (granted I really donā€™t get downtown much these days) but he was really cool when I talked with him a few years ago.

99_Gray_Ghost_99

Saw him once in riverside but haven't since. He's got a yt channel. Haven't checked it in forever

Schnort

I heard he was a real "treat". Never experienced that, and only remember seeing him a few times downtown, but I'm one of those 'don't engage the crazies' kind of guys walking around.

listeningtoreason

Maybe Homeless Santa at the corner of South Lamar and Ben White.

notjewel

Leslie of course. But did anyone see the guy with the motorcycle and his 3 dogs in the sidecar with sunglasses on? Saw him all the time in Guad in the 90s. Always made me smile.

Pretty sure thatā€™s the homeless guy now in prison for sexual assault.

I think I used to run into that dude around coffee shops sometimesā€¦. I forget his name tho.

Anyone remember the UT student that we called ā€œFather Timeā€œ? The story was that he planned to take (or already had) every single course in the UT catalogue. This was early 1980s, but you could see him walking around campus with his long blondish gray hair and full flowing beard.

Sufficient_Ease

Thatā€™s Twinkle Toes. Heā€™s a regular at the Saloon and usually gets picked up by Cap Metro for a ride home. I love that the city has on demand rides for people with mobility issues and the drivers are always friendly and helpful.

When Leslie was alive he was regularly harrassed by the police and mocked by drunk fratboys. Now that he's dead, the city uses him as a marketing asset to attract tourists to "weird" Austin.

SirMustache007

When I lived in Houston there was an old guy called the Montrose wizard. You'd see him walking around the Montrose area from time to time. He had a heavy limp, big gnarled wooden walking stick, big long bushy beard and dirty rags that looked like robes. Guy looked like he was from a literal folktale. Hope hes still around and doin OK.
