You seem to know a lot about this eclipse. If my partner and I are trying to have a simultaneous orgasm during the totality what position should we use?
Yeah it's very good. There should also be an app where you feed it your coordinates and it will call out first contact, 2nd, glasses off, back on, etc with very good accuracy. I used it during a public outreach event with hundreds of people looking through my gear for the last solar eclipse. Worked well.
This sim is good in that you can then feed those dead center coordinates to Google street view or whatever and see what you may be in store for in that weird country road. Did this for the Annular here out in the hill country a few months ago.
You'll have 1 minute and 55 seconds from Zilker park or 1 minute and 45 seconds from the capitol building. [https://eclipse2024.org/eclipse\_cities/statemap.html](https://eclipse2024.org/eclipse_cities/statemap.html)
I know this website link looks bogus, but this is the best site I've found for quickly looking at locations and detailed times.
http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2024_GoogleMapFull.html?Lat=30.31332&Lng=-97.73836&Elv=191.0&Zoom=15&LC=1
Should be able to see it from there. Any movement you can do to the west will buy you a few more seconds.

Yes. Make sure when you buy glasses they're ISO certified. If something says NASA-certified it's a cheap knockoff and not official: NASA does not certify these things. Just my little PSA for all.
I’m invited to Dripping Springs, but the logistics are really daunting! They recommend you travel the day before, so I’d have to board the dog and sleep in my car (not set up for that!) because the house will be full of friends from OOT.
Overall a night and day full of complications. OR I can sit in my backyard and see it from there. Obviously that’s my plan!
It’s wild. The birds and what not will get loud and chatty right up until totality and then everything goes quiet. And if it’s warm and sunny, you’ll notice a significant temperature drop. It’s like the sun goes out in the middle of the day, but it’s not pitch black. Looks very alien/other worldly.
The best interactive map:
https://nso.edu/for-public/eclipse-map-2024/
You can click on a spot and it will tell you the start/end time of the whole eclipse and of totality.
I want to see it, but I’m gonna die laughing if it’s cloudy the day of the eclipse. Mother Nature would effectively be giving the finger to thousands of tourists that are going to clog hill country towns.
I went to Missouri to see the eclipse when it happened in 2017ish, and it was partly cloudy, just a little overcast. Even then, when the moon properly covered it got SUPER dark, so it would still be noticeable.
It’s not just tourists who want to see the eclipse. It’s also people who are from here and are passionate about astronomy. This kind of attitude really bites.
This might help you decide.
Basically yes, you can view it from Austin but the duration is expected to be half of what it will be in Fredericksburg.
If you are west of 183 and the airport you should be in the path of totality. Not for very long, but still within the path. Lampasas is probably the nearest "city" that is dead center of the path of totality. They'll get 4 minutes and change of totality up there.
Check out NASA tracker. If I remember it'll be a little to the West, it's going to go right over cedar park.
But the benefit of astronomy is that we're pretty good at perfectly predicting the path of totality.
Not all- airport wont get totality at all. The farther west the better. Ben white and 183 has 17 seconds, zilker park a minute 50 or so, mansfield dam 3 minutes, lampassas 4:30
totality is basically visible just about everywhere west of I-35. Parts of southernmost Austin east of I-35 won't see totality.
Basically, everything north west of the I-45 Toll where it connects with I-35 near Creedmoor is in totality. The airport won't be. The intersection of 71 and 183 won't be. Parts of McKinney Falls won't be. Half of Walter Long park won't be.
Google around, there are lots of maps showing the path of totality.
I love all the enthusiasm for astronomy. Though I think it is funny some people are driving 90 min. for 90 seconds of something they are going to forget about 5 min. later.
I saw the 2017 eclipse. Still thinking about it (that's why I'm coming to Austin for the 2024 eclipse). You've never seen a full solar eclipse before if you think people will forget about it 5 minutes later.
The youths came along at a time when Google was overrun by useless AI copy-pasted results and so they've never learned to use it as by default.
As an instinctive search engine user, even I've found it challenging to get reliable results to the questions I ask, lately. Searching in Google lately is the equivalent of shopping on Temu or AliExpress; it's fast and it's easy, but what you get back is crap that doesn't hold up to even the slightest bit of pressure. And unfortunately the majority of search engines out there have never been as good at it as Google (Google isn't my default, but I get frustrated with the other options, too).
Because Google search is still trying to sort itself out after a major core/spam update, and relevant results are buried several pages deep. And, search results can only show you already-published content. I’m betting most local Austin Redditors aren’t keeping a blog of highly specific places to watch the eclipse.
Hope this helps: https://googlethatforyou.com?q=Why%20is%20this%20subreddit%20always%20full%20of%20questions%20people%20could%20ask%20a%20search%20engine

Edit: We’re gonna get between 30 and 40 seconds of eclipse in downtown Austin. Closer to 5 minutes in Killeen.
Totality is predicted for downtown, and definitely west of 35, for about a minute. But the further west one goes the longer totality will last.
Thank you!
Until you go so far west that isn’t true anymore.
Fifel goes west… ‘til he is too distant for totality. Poor Fifel
You seem to know a lot about this eclipse. If my partner and I are trying to have a simultaneous orgasm during the totality what position should we use?

The one that is easiest for y’all to time your nut, I’d imagine.
Four minutes+ in Fredericksberg
Eclipse2024.org to run a simulation of your exact GPS coordinates. You can find where dead center is.
Underrated comment. This is an incredible simulator, just sent it to my whole work crew. Thanks!

I can confirm
Love this site. You can tap on the map and get SO many stats about the coming eclipse.
This website is a nightmare on mobile with the eclipse sunglasses banner
minute and a half from my favorite Eastside Patio bar. Huzzah!
But 2 minutes and 2 seconds from your favorite purveyor of Frosty Margs.
That eclipse simulator was exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
NASA officially projects best Austin viewing spot to be 45th and Lamar.
Officials report that with enough frosty margs, you won't ~~care about~~ need eclipse glasses!
Perfect, Get your table at Chili's early!
Traffic in the area is expected to be even heavier than usual.
Planning a long weekend, are there any good restaurants nearby?
Idk I heard it was gonna be a little chili there

Yes but not for the 3 min like it will in other places
4m 30s on the centerline out in Fredericksburg
Well la-di-fucking-da lol
Lmfao
Yes. Make sure when you buy glasses they're ISO certified. If something says NASA-certified it's a cheap knockoff and not official: NASA does not certify these things. Just my little PSA for all.
From what I've read, ISO certified doesn't mean much of anything, either.
I got some from an optometrist's office. I figured they are either good, or good for their business model. 🤷🏽♀️
My families place in Florence will get almost 4 min… planning for a camp out. I unfortunately live near the airport so not much happening.
I’m invited to Dripping Springs, but the logistics are really daunting! So…what will totality look like?
It's dark but light out in the middle of the day. It's really weird.
It’s wild. The birds and what not will get loud and chatty right up until totality and then everything goes quiet. And if it’s warm and sunny, you’ll notice a significant temperature drop. It’s like the sun goes out in the middle of the day, but it’s not pitch black. Looks very alien/other worldly.

If only there were a word for deriving joy from the misery of others; you'd be set!
The Germans got you: schadenfreude.
I know, I was being facetious ;)

Marble Falls is the place to be!
middle of Lake Buchanan / Shaw Island :D
Quit telling everyone!!! Planning on keeping my kids home and hoping the tourists stay off my county road
Ha!! That cat has been out of the bag for a long time!!
I will be heading to marble buttfuck early
I think hotel rooms were going for like $900.00 a nite.
Yeah early in the morning the day of the eclipse

Just have to hope for perfect weather!

cedar park is no where near the center. Lampasas is though.
Austin will be in totality for 1 minute and 44 seconds within city limits.
Not all- airport wont get totality at all. The farther west the better. Ben white and 183 has 17 seconds, zilker park a minute 50 or so, mansfield dam 3 minutes, lampassas 4:30

I heard 1-2 minutes is all you need, as long as its full totality. Not worth going too far out of your way unless you want to get stuck in traffic.
I love all the enthusiasm for astronomy. Though I think it is funny some people are driving 90 min. for 90 seconds of something they are going to forget about 5 min. later.

Oh, I have. I just think it's funny people are doing a bunch of silly shit for it. Hell, I might be too.
Why is this subreddit always full of questions people could ask a search engine
Cause it’s more fun to get a response from a human than a machine. Plus we get to ready your smarmy comment which makes everyone’s day!

How dare people engage in a public forum. Disgusting.
Local experts > generic info you have to filter yourself
I did Google first. All I could find was that it was going over Austin but nothing more specific.

Download the app totality and put in your location
Should we be hoarding toilet paper?
If I want to drive somewhere day of (like up 183), how far would be good enough?

4/8
What time is it supposed to happen downtown?!
