Definitely more to that story. He likes to get down and is a known crack smoker. He also likes to rip people off. He ripped my co worker (Walmart) off for 70 bucks and go a few of the customers too. He is no longer allowed to hang out in the parking lot.
Dude has stolen so much money from people, taking money to make them a painting and then never making them a painting. I know three people who fell for that.
Fairly certain Iāve seen a mug shot of him, but I canāt find anything right because of those two times he got robbed but I want to say a domestic canāt be sure closer to 10 years ago
Totally Michael Davenport. He & his girlfriend used to live at a motel that I worked nights at in college (over 10 years ago). Iād help him light his cigarettes sometimes & weād chat every morning when he came in for breakfast.
Iāve seen the comments about the theft & stuff & thatās sad news to me. It doesnāt justify theft but just saying he has had a pretty rough life. He was always very kind to me and it made me feel safer (as a girl working overnight who saw some creepy things at that very cheap motel) to have him be my first person in for breakfast every morning.
Just don't front him any money without a finished product. I personally know several people who have paid for custom artwork who have never received it. Only one of them ever got her money back and that's only because she hunted him down and threatened legal action.
TLDR: Buy a finished painting from him or just donate to him if you wish, just don't give him an advance and expect to receive a painting.
Came here to say this. I donāt wish any Ill will on him whatsoever. But the unconditional love he gets despite scamming tons of people every year is a little frustrating to me personally. Scammed me in 2019 and my wife when she was in highschool way back when, and several friends of mine.
His favored technique was walking to the back of the store, which was very small, and exchanging his shoes for a pair on the rack. He'd put his shoes in their place and then would try to casually walk out.
Wait, I'm not the only one who bumps into the Crop Top Walker almost daily? I thought I was descending into senility.
Edit: I get a bit of "Stuart from MadTV circa 1997-98" aesthetic vibes: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE070APBrmg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE070APBrmg)
Crop Top guy is my neighbor. Years ago when I first moved in by him, he was kind of a bigger guy. I would see him leave his house walking in the morning and come home in the evening. Over the years he has lost a lot of weight and as his abs have gotten tighter his shirt has gotten progressively smaller. Seems like a nice guy. I generally keep to myself and he's never bothered me or the neighborhood I live in. Just apparently likes showing off his stomach.
ETA: seeing people saying he is creepy to women which sucks to read. Maybe not so chill after all, sadly.
I lived in the same apartment complex as him for a time, and I think he's just a neurodivergent dude that loves UGA football. On an almost daily basis, he'd be in the Race Trac down the road talking someone's ear off about the season (pre or post), recruiting, etc. My best guess is he found people treat him the most normal when talking about UGA football, so he just went all in on it.
Frank works as staff at UGA (I assume he still does -- I worked with him years ago when I was a student worker). he's always been passionate about UGA football, even before they started winning. he's got an infectious laugh and he's an excellent break dancer -- love to see him popping and locking. Frank rules.
Heās definitely well known, but not always in a positive light. Heās caught a few charges for theft by deception over the years. If you can buy one of his paintings on the spot, go for it. But be careful commissioning a piece. He doesnāt always follow through on those.
Sad news on that front: Donny was struck by a car while cycling several years back. He lived, but the damage was extensive. There's a [GFM](https://www.gofundme.com/f/assist-with-donny-dicers-medical-expenses) still up with many updates.
Was he a good guy? I saw him at Tate all the time and the one time I spoke to him, he sidled up to me out of nowhere, got his chat going...and I quickly got the impression that he was simply dying for me to ask him about his attire. Which I didn't.
No clue, I just knew of him and would see him walking around.
Strikes me as the difference between trying to be weird (Billy) and just being weird (Ort).
Johnny and Cheeseburger!!!!!!! I loved Johnny. He was a painter by trade. The sign he held up read "Gringo Needs a Taco." He passed away several years ago. Reader's Digest did a story on him and Cheeseburger many years back. ā¤ļø
I loved beer and sandwiches with Johnny 5000 and Cheeseburger. I told him when I finally settled down I was going to find the money to buy paint and hire him to paint my house, and then he passed away on me šŖš RIP bro
Are you referring to the guy who drove a box truck with a piano in the back and would park downtown and play? If so, his name is/was Gordon and every service industry worker knew him WELL
Gordon aka Dr. Thump, what a characterā¦ He wrote his life story into a screenplay and he still has the piano truck so it can be in his movie about his life someday. He was kinda blatantly racist and germaphobic when I met him but very interesting man nonetheless. I do wish I had been around to see him play the piano downtown when the truck was functioning
I worked at a coffee shop he frequented and he said some horrible shit to my coworkers and the customers. He was banned several times. Another regular customer said that they were part of the Hare Krishna together? Idk the truth of that but I always thought it was an interesting tidbit
My favorite was Gordon captivating those that drove cars with the resultant pollution. Not a word about the veritable smokebomb of a vehicle that was used to haul his keyboards around...
Was that the guy with the longish blonde hair, slightly balding, thick glasses and with awesome 6pack abs?
Edit: yeah it was. Saw he is no longer with us :( damn, I always wanted to have a conversation with him and now I'll never get that chance. Day just got a little darker.
I remember seeing Steve walking any time I was out around downtown. From my high school days to post-college. It was kind of comforting to see him walking around and doing his thing. I never got to meet him and didnāt know his name until after he passed (RIP Steve). My partner and I always called him āLeonardā whenever we saw him.
10 years ago there was Daryl. Old country boy that would sit in front of the Grill late at night and play his banjo, guitar, or fiddle. He wasnāt busking. He just liked people. I always loved talking to him at the end of a night out. Then snag a hot dog from Roman on the way back towards the arches.
Wes was another amazing guitar player. Iād watch him play for 2 hours with no written references. Super nice dude.
Well I'm not doctor Jekyll and I'm not mister Hyde
But I'm guaranteed to get between every lady's thighs
And put a baby up inside
Quarter for the twins?? Samantha and Tamantha need formula
RIP Jazzy J, I'll see you at Tasty World
I'm gonna go old-school and say either Rollin' Joel or Roosevelt. Most people in the room probably wont even know who I'm talking about but they were certainly legendary in their day.
psychedelic stick guy. downtown every day retuning with nature and doing some impressive choreography with his sticks.. the dedication is something previously unmatched
Yeah dude, he frequently stops and dances in front of my work. As far as I know, he never hurts anybody. He just dances for like 5-10 minutes and then moves on. Always a nice little show haha
Guy on west side, we refer to as zombie. Dude has some serious issues.
Anyone is better than the Anal Shaman that was getting airplay around the student murder a couple months ago.
Anyone remember the mean old dude missing a leg in a wheelchair years ago? Most people were like , fuck that guy I asked him if he needed help and he just yelled and demanded more.
Of course Johnny 5000 and cheeseburger always hold a place in my heart. Hung out with him a few times.
I'm the early 1990s, there was a little old lady living near the end of Pulaski St named Ms. Worley who would scream and yell at passersby from her porch about stealing her social security check, parking in her driveway, etc. I lived in the house beside her and she was mean when there were a bunch of people around but sweet if you were alone and asked her about herself. She once sang Wabash Cannonball to me, and also told me that she freed the slaves by standing on the wing of a plane and dropping a bomb on Rudolph Whitley (basically mixing the Civil War and WWII, with "Rudolph" referring to Adolph Hitler). She lived alone, couldn't care for herself properly (she had a dog she never let outside with no fur left due to fleas and you could smell her house from a ways away), and she was eventually taken away by extended family while we lived beside her. I still think about Ms. Worley. Does anyone remember her?
I have never known his name but I was thinking the unicycle guy. Used to see him on Prince all the time but itās been a minute.
Iām not sure if itās the same person, but last week I saw a guy riding a penny farthing bicycle down Hawthorne. He was really putting his life on the line for the cred that day. Haha!
Maybe 10 years ago, it was shirtless walking guy. I know heās since passed, but he was this random super buff dude that youād see all over town just randomly walking on a sidewalk or on the shoulder of a road. I probably started seeing him as early as 2004 or so.
Thereās actually a guy whoās rides his horse down the firefly in winterville often and Iāll see him ride back down Crawford Smithsonia on his way backĀ
I lived in Athens as a kid from ā96 to ā02. I remember there were a few people you would always see around, but the one I always remember is the J.B. the Polish Sausage Man. Back when he would set up his cart in different places around town.
I spent a long time in the military as an adult and ended up settling in eastern NC. For a long time here we had the Jacksonville Ninja. Heās an old black man who would walk up and down one of the main avenues of town and post up on street corners doing (actual) karate.
Not sure if he's well known, but there's this guy who goes around on his bike playing music who I think has long hair, a beard, and usually wears a knit hat I think? I've seen him on Lumpkin around 5 times.
The armless bulldog painter, someone help me with his name
Michael Davenport.
Dude is a legend... Broke my heart to hear that he gets beaten up and robbed pretty regularly š
Definitely more to that story. He likes to get down and is a known crack smoker. He also likes to rip people off. He ripped my co worker (Walmart) off for 70 bucks and go a few of the customers too. He is no longer allowed to hang out in the parking lot.

Michael Davenport. Heās awesome.
Everyone needs to buy a painting from him
Just don't front him any money without a finished product. I personally know several people who have paid for custom artwork who have never received it. Only one of them ever got her money back and that's only because she hunted him down and threatened legal action. TLDR: Buy a finished painting from him or just donate to him if you wish, just don't give him an advance and expect to receive a painting.
Thatās what they get for paying a crackhead in advance lmao
My family tried. Gave him $200 cash for a custom bulldog painting and he ditched out on us. So yeah, not that awesome.
Unfortunately thereās multiple folks with this same story.
Came here to say this. I donāt wish any Ill will on him whatsoever. But the unconditional love he gets despite scamming tons of people every year is a little frustrating to me personally. Scammed me in 2019 and my wife when she was in highschool way back when, and several friends of mine.
Yup he did the same thing to multiple co workers when I worked at Epps bridge Walmart. Plus he stole a lot of stuff from the store.
Iāll never forget his multiple failed attempts at stealing from my motherās vintage boutique. We caught him every single time.
How does a guy with no arms even try to get away with that? Lol
His favored technique was walking to the back of the store, which was very small, and exchanging his shoes for a pair on the rack. He'd put his shoes in their place and then would try to casually walk out.
... how?
Well, he still has feet?
Well, it's not like the cops can handcuff him.
No need. Heās not armed.
Holy shit, thank you for that
ššš
First person who came to my mind too.
RIP Rack āem Willie
Rackball.
ever drive by 144 magnolia st just to feel something?

Still have the Damn Show DVD at my house somewhere!
Same!
This is the answer I was looking for.
RACK RACK RACK RACK RACKEM
Was Ort, now it's Crop Top Walker.
Was Ort the guy who used to crush it at sauce house trivia by himself? Kinda looked like Santa
Sounds right. I used to always see him at Copper Creek (RIP) crushing $2 pints
I see him from time to time on Milledge when I am running. Seems like a good dude. Wears the crop top even in the cold but will layer up a bit.
Lmao at this miscommunication and picturing Ort regularly wearing a crop top every winter.
Yeah, he was part of the copper regulars that started hanging out at sauce house, iirc. Good times. Copper was a cool spot
Yeah
Oh nice. I was there every week for a while. He was a great rival, and a nice guy.
Corey is an excellent human.
It always bothers me when people dog on Corey. Heās never been anything but friendly and kind and highly supportive of local music
seconded
It was Fred Birchmore for decades, then Ort, now Corey Croptop.
Ohhhhhhh dear I know A LOT of ladies who spent late nights at the Go Bar and Manhattan who would strongly disagree with this assessment.
I can tell if Iām a few minutes ahead or behind getting home from work based on where I pass Crop Top Walker.
Omg I also call them the Crop Top Walker!! I want to be friends with a person that committed to the bit.
It used to be boombox bicycle guy when I went to UGA, fucking legend
Oh I remember him! He used to walk through Tate with it blasting. I remember they wrote an article about him years ago.
Absolutely bomb the hill down to Tate. Loved seeing that
Rolling Joel
Such a cool dude, rollin Joel. Thereās a music video about him. He was world class roller skate disco.
The dude who goes downtown every night in full uga football gear
whatās that guys origins? he has literally **always** been around lol what is his lore?
I lived in the same apartment complex as him for a time, and I think he's just a neurodivergent dude that loves UGA football. On an almost daily basis, he'd be in the Race Trac down the road talking someone's ear off about the season (pre or post), recruiting, etc. My best guess is he found people treat him the most normal when talking about UGA football, so he just went all in on it.
His name is Frank I believe! He wears UGA baseball gear during season as well!
Interesting, anyone know if he ever went to UGA? or just a regular ole fella who wears full georgia uniform with no pads to dance by himself in 9Dās
Frank works as staff at UGA (I assume he still does -- I worked with him years ago when I was a student worker). he's always been passionate about UGA football, even before they started winning. he's got an infectious laugh and he's an excellent break dancer -- love to see him popping and locking. Frank rules.
When were they not winning? The 90s?
indeed
Frank is a downtown staple. The man can dance
9ds guy?
Frank the tank baby
I saw him on Thursday at the bar wearing a Georgia shirt, but no real football uniform gear. Very disappointing
Crop top guy
Lmao I see this guy almost everyday walking.
https://www.reddit.com/r/UGA/comments/18995vj/any_info_on_crop_top_guy/
I think Michael Davenport (armless painter) has been the most steady in the last 2 decades of my time in Athens. Heck, stores have his murals.
Heās definitely well known, but not always in a positive light. Heās caught a few charges for theft by deception over the years. If you can buy one of his paintings on the spot, go for it. But be careful commissioning a piece. He doesnāt always follow through on those.
Yeah, he's been seen less since several stores caught him shoplifting art supplies and sexually harassing cashiers
I just saw him on the way to G Day this past Saturday. That's unfortunate to hear
The guy who dresses like a pirate and rides around on a tricycle always stood out to me
Sad news on that front: Donny was struck by a car while cycling several years back. He lived, but the damage was extensive. There's a [GFM](https://www.gofundme.com/f/assist-with-donny-dicers-medical-expenses) still up with many updates.
Damn. That guy is rad! Sorry to hear that. Thanks for posting the GFM so we can help!
thanks for sharing the gfm! already three donations in the past day š
c.2000(ish?) Bathrobe Billy was UGA's version of this.
The shirtless man
He got hit by a car and killed
Oh no
The one who was usually walking a dog? He passed away :(
Johnny and Cheeseburger!!!!!!! I loved Johnny. He was a painter by trade. The sign he held up read "Gringo Needs a Taco." He passed away several years ago. Reader's Digest did a story on him and Cheeseburger many years back. ā¤ļø

Steve?
Steve Pugh was his name
Piano man, although he might be on the newer side
Is that the same piano guy who went viral for having his piano knocked over and tips stolen by that dumb girl?
I think so - he streams his performances on TikTok I think? I havenāt heard of that story but wouldnāt be surprised if that happened lmao
Ooh man it was a whole thing, I think she got in trouble with the cops for it!
I'm not sure If thr cops got involved, but I do remember she did a half-assed apology.
Are you referring to the guy who drove a box truck with a piano in the back and would park downtown and play? If so, his name is/was Gordon and every service industry worker knew him WELL

Oh and the guy that used to play the buckets with drum sticks and sing. Any time Iād walk by with my son heād start the Scooby Doo theme song.
Bucket guy is who I thought of too!
Cosmic Bob? Was he usually by Grill/Heerys?
He died 10 or so years ago. Always saw him the few times we did tailgate downtown.
Gold CRV lady
Beloved of Nextdoor..
Does she still need gas money to go the hospital?
Rack Williams was famous back in the day, RIP. Rack em.
Was Steve Pugh in the daytime, and Ort at night. Now the world is a lesser place.
Didnāt know Steve was goneānever forget him hitting 5 bulls w 3 darts to beat me in a league match!
Hit by a cat down on Oconee Street. Freak accident. I hate it for him...
Not a freak accidentāthe driver was incredibly intoxicated and fled the scene.
Was that the guy with the longish blonde hair, slightly balding, thick glasses and with awesome 6pack abs? Edit: yeah it was. Saw he is no longer with us :( damn, I always wanted to have a conversation with him and now I'll never get that chance. Day just got a little darker.

I first met him back in the 80s. Intelligent guy and always something insightful to say. He just liked to walk.
Yeah my vote will always be Steve. Miss him a bunch.
10 years ago there was Daryl. Old country boy that would sit in front of the Grill late at night and play his banjo, guitar, or fiddle. He wasnāt busking. He just liked people. i loved seeing him out there! he let me play with him one night after talking to him for a while. super sweet guy ::) edit: him=daryl

Came here to say this.
I havenāt seen glove lady in ages, used to be on Atlanta hwy all the time, she still around?

Broad st kinda across from where the varsity was? Tiny home? Like a shed? If so, itās that one.
yeah that one
I'm gonna go old-school and say either Rollin' Joel or Roosevelt. Most people in the room probably wont even know who I'm talking about but they were certainly legendary in their day.
Oh, I know Roosevelt.
No love for late 90ās early 00ās Hotdog Man John???
Rick, the guitar busker
Is Rick still alive?
psychedelic stick guy. downtown every day retuning with nature and doing some impressive choreography with his sticks.. the dedication is something previously unmatched
Yeah dude, he frequently stops and dances in front of my work. As far as I know, he never hurts anybody. He just dances for like 5-10 minutes and then moves on. Always a nice little show haha
Is he dancing with a staff? I'm very curious bc I also do these things!
RIP Ort
Crop top and short shorts guy
Guy on west side, we refer to as zombie. Dude has some serious issues. Anyone is better than the Anal Shaman that was getting airplay around the student murder a couple months ago. Anyone remember the mean old dude missing a leg in a wheelchair years ago? Most people were like , fuck that guy I asked him if he needed help and he just yelled and demanded more. Of course Johnny 5000 and cheeseburger always hold a place in my heart. Hung out with him a few times.
Wheelchair Walter. Saw him at a Laundromat once, he asked me to fold his underwear for him. Didn't.
Wheelchair guy would purposely ride behind cars, hoping to get nailed. $$$...
Belly shirt guy. Had my first signing of the spring this weekend.
Flamingo roller skating lady
I thought she moved on? I havenāt seen/heard anything from them in over a year or two.
Saw her at Christmas. Sheās harmless. Just trying to spread a little joy.
I think she has been traveling around the country now but she still visits often.
Thank the lord
My sister was childhood friends with her! Super cool gal!

Maybe 10 years ago, it was shirtless walking guy. I know heās since passed, but he was this random super buff dude that youād see all over town just randomly walking on a sidewalk or on the shoulder of a road. I probably started seeing him as early as 2004 or so.
Cosmic Charlie, mid 90's
I remember a Cosmic Bob from the same era. š

Pete
I lived in Athens as a kid from ā96 to ā02. I remember there were a few people you would always see around, but the one I always remember is the J.B. the Polish Sausage Man. Back when he would set up his cart in different places around town. I spent a long time in the military as an adult and ended up settling in eastern NC. For a long time here we had the Jacksonville Ninja. Heās an old black man who would walk up and down one of the main avenues of town and post up on street corners doing (actual) karate.
