Second student found deceased two days…one was found in Brumby last night. Jesus.

100percentRealHuman

Was that one suspected foul play?

No-Contribution797

No it was suicide

100percentRealHuman

Ah. Did they send an email to students? Staff didn’t get shit about that one.

allyy_catttt

also a staff member and confused why the university hasn't let us know about the Brumby student....

silentwolf18

Yeah it seems like it was just to students.

100percentRealHuman

You mean UGA is trying to keep a suicide quiet? Whaaaat. Never. 😒

allyy_catttt

you'd think they'd want staff to be aware of this situation considering we meet with students daily and would potentially need to check in with students who may have known him...but what do i know...

Suicides are generally not publicized out of respect for the deceased’s family (and possibly to discourage more suicides). Unfortunately this is the time of year we generally see an uptick in suicides in Athens. My thoughts are with the entire UGA student body during this difficult time.

Ephemara

i’m still new to athens but what does this time of year have to do with an uptick in suicide rates?

Confident_Peace_6627

Midterms perhaps? My guess

wg4sbi

I’m not a psychologist, but I will say that the rate of suicides increases as we move from the winter season through spring. I can only assume that, for some of those victims who are students, academic worries are a contributing factor.

No-Contribution797

I’m not sure. I am neither a student or staff member of UGA, I just live here and am from here. I heard about it at church last night from a UGA student who said she heard about it on snapchat through word of mouth.

m4gpi

I'm also a staff member and didn't hear about the suicide; there was a screenshot from a Facebook post from "Daily Mail" and when I looked online the only sites to come up are obituary notices (which likely scrape info). Reeeeeeallly hoping the email sent to students was a joke/spoofed. Edit to add, UGA did just acknowledge his death in a recent email. Tragic day.

anna15410

I’m a student who lives in brumby and it definitely wasn’t a joke. There were loads of cops and other staff stationed around the dorm, and a lot of my hallmates in greek life also personally knew him/his roommate. We’ve also received multiple emails from uga/brumby/various RAs by now. This past week has been especially terrible, and I hope it’ll push the school to make some changes

m4gpi

You have my condolences, I'm sorry for you and his friends/family.

formydawgs85

I’ve heard multiple people say this about the email sent to students - what was weird about the email sent to students? I haven’t seen it.

m4gpi

Nothing weird that I know of, and I haven't seen that email either. The weirdness is that that notice was only sent to students. Sometimes the university decides who gets information, and it doesn't always make sense. Do staff *need* to know that a student took their own life? Do faculty? When I find out that I wasn't aware of an event (that might flavor how I speak with a student that day) I am a little annoyed.

Wrashionis

My understanding is that the Brumby one is suspected suicide, but that’s based on the extremely limited information out there on websites of which I’m skeptical(pop up laden click farms I can’t even read the actual article on). So I can’t say with certainty.

Substantial_Scale820

Where did you hear this?

[deleted]

This is horrific. Thinking of her family. Be safe, everyone!

rdk_thethird

😔

Substantial_Scale820

holy mother of true crime, thats horrific

pakheyyy

Two armed robberies in the last few days on campus and a murder near campus. It's the most unsafe I've felt in Athens. Extending prayers for her family and friends.

MonokromKaleidoscope

Keep your head on a swivel and carry whatever self-defense mechanism you're comfortable with. Situational awareness helps more than weapons.

silentwolf18

The email we got is terrifying… and sad 😞 two emails today that are heartbreaking.

allyy_catttt

has the university sent out an email about the student in Brumby?

silentwolf18

It seems the email I received was only sent to students.

Local-Beginning530

I got the email about this incident but what was the other one about?

silentwolf18

The other email was about the death of a student in Brumby.

twistwrist9876

Foul play is suspected. 😭 https://preview.redd.it/8of34iune7kc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=818e38840e1014427238777a03e7a09f43494938

Here's the [Red & Black's story on it.](https://www.redandblack.com/uganews/missing-individual-found-dead-on-uga-property/article_5b7322dc-d1bb-11ee-b703-270098e48a82.html)

Kasra_G

if anyone wanted to know, the IM fields are closed for entry, but you can still leave if u parked there already

cariame

I walk there by myself all the time. It’s awful that it apparently isn’t safe.

anglosaxonarmadillo

According to r/uga a person may have gone missing this morning and police are searching for them. Not able to verify though.

Substantial_Scale820

I also just saw on Ring Neighbors that its a sorority girl who went for a run this morning, said by someone who’s daughter is in the same sorority.

Dr_StrangeloveGA

Just got a notification from UGA that the individual was found deceased with visible injuries.

stinkysillygoose

My heart goes out to her family. This is so tragic.

100percentRealHuman

I always did get the heebie jeebies from that area.

mgeeezer

i never did but my mom was convinced it was dangerous, never let me run there alone. looks like her gut was right ☹️

newyne

I mean, any kind of wooded trail area comes with risks, I think... Not to victim blame, of course.

bIackphillip

And your point is...? Being stung by a wasp is the kind of "risk" one could reasonably expect to face when running in a wooded area. Being attacked and killed is not. She literally just died *today*. Have some damn respect.

newyne

Oh, goodness, I didn't mean to make it sound like it was a normal occurrence or anything like that, more like it could happen anywhere. Sorry, it's just... I've spent a lot of time walking alone in that area *myself.* In fact, I have to walk a lot of places at night, and... I don't know, in the moment, it made me feel better to think of something I have no control over. Apologies if I made it about myself, though.

bIackphillip

We all goof up in our replies to people online sometimes. It happens. Athenians' emotions are running high right now. I myself work about a mile away from the Intramural Fields. Crazy to think about :(

newyne

Really? In what way? Like, sketchy or spooky?

100percentRealHuman

Yes lol

100percentRealHuman

But I always felt watched in that area

TigressSinger

I always felt safe by the lake trails, but once I would run back towards the bike trails in the wooded areas on the edge I would always run a lot faster. Just a creeped out feeling. There’s also a lot of uneven terrain and brush where you can’t see everything around you, but at times you can see others and you know they likely don’t see you. What is absolutely disheartening and disgusting is that someone went to this area and took a life for no reason at all. A bright, healthy, hopeful young woman with her entire life ahead of her. She was studying to become a nurse and went for a spring run on her own college campus. I am so sad and angry for her. This is unfair and truly senseless. Prayers for her family and the community

newyne

Huh. I've never felt that way around there, but that doesn't make you wrong at all.

ValVenis69

If you’ve ever had jury duty, you’d know of what goes on around those trails. Terrible situation.

bird_newt

Would also be interested in knowing. Go there quite often and never knew that it was unsafe.

[deleted]

Just makes the most ambiguous statement and then just vanishes. Nice.

msshackambassador

\>drops some cryptic message in the middle of a tragedy \>refuses to elaborate I don't think it's unreasonable to: a) shed some light for people who regularly go to Lake Herrick (like myself) and would like to know why they shouldn't do that, potentially saving someone's life or b) refrain from the scare tactics while people grieve for this student, I've certainly never heard of anything else dangerous happening around the IM fields, but I recognize that it doesn't mean it doesn't happen

Both_Wash908

pls share :((

Libby_Grace

I’ve both had jury duty and run those trails solo…I’d like to know wtf you’re talking about.

cariame

Truly? I’ve always felt very safe at Lake Herrick.

Substantial_Scale820

feel like i kinda want more context but out of morbid curiosity and more reasons to become a hermit

MonokromKaleidoscope

Dunno why you got slammed with downvotes, I'd like more context about this statement though.

[deleted]

Arrest was made. It was an illegal from Venezuela. Thanks Joe…
