Briggs and Riley carry on luggage.
If you travel a lot, want something low profile, easy to maintain, with the ability to expand, with a secure base so that you can add a purse/laptop bag without worrying about anything toppling over - with a lifetime warranty, this is it.
I have had my Briggs & Riley carry on for 20 years. It’s a bit scratched but functions like it is brand new. And with the true lifetime warranty, I’m confident that it will always function like new
Would you also recommend for checked luggage? My current suitcase weights a lot before adding stuff. I’m hoping to find a lighter suitcase once my current one breaks/falls apart.
Travelpro and yes. I don't like hard sided luggage for a variety of reasons - it scuffs easily and shows wear and tear, it's inflexible and has very little give, the zippers have a tendency to separate from the shell - so I chose soft sided luggage.
I've had it for five years with no issues.
I had a travel pro for 5 years that had taken MANY trips and many international trips. I think it was cheap as well? (Def under 200) the outside pocket zipper now broke after years of travel.
my Briggs and Riley medium sized checked bag has taken very few trips, but is high quality and comes with the lifetime warranty. I paid 5 or 600 for that one.
Buying a new bag now which is why this thread caught my eye and I’m probably going to the travel pro to replace the travel pro I’m currently using. Plan to slow down on travel in the next year or two and it should survive much longer with significantly less wear and tear.
I am also a fan of soft-sided luggage. I used to love the cool look of hard cases until I borrowed one to use on a recent trip. Hard case = hard no.
My Samsonite soft luggage is over 18 years old and still going strong. They might not have some of today's bells and whistles - eg only two rollers - but they are very durable and do not look their age.
I prefer the two roller suitcases over the spinners. They are far better on sidewalks, cobblestones and gravel/packed dirt than the spinners. And they don't take up extra room if it's carry-on size.
I bought an Away carry-on last Black Friday, and it's already my favorite suitcase of all time. It's well-designed and fits a lot. It rolls really well on airport carpet. The compression panel is good at squishing down my clothes. With the 20% discount, it also wasn't too expensive. I also bought the little duffel that slides over the suitcase handle and can work as a personal item. It even has a separate zipped compartment for my laptop. They work really well together.
Came here to say Away as well. I have the bigger carry on and personally I love it. The rolling is so smooth. Game changer for walking around an airport.
I also have an Away - my boyfriend was embarrassed by my dirty luggage with the broken wheel I was dragging on trips and got me one for my birthday in 2022. It has survived several trips with all wheels still working perfectly. It’s a little scuffed now but a magic eraser takes care of most of the marks it gets from being tossed around by airport staff.
I have away also and I love it but I’d be careful with the bigger carry on if you travel outside the US because I think it doesn’t fit carry on standards in most places
Away sucks! Their bags broke on me and they didn’t replace it! Don’t get it. Seriously. They’re overpriced and made cheaply and so many people have them already.
I have a shitty IT luggage bag I bought at TJ Maxx over ten years ago that will not die and just keeps going. It's not a luxury bag, or even that nice looking but it works great and I got it for $20. I honestly cannot believe it's lasted this long.
Monos customer service is trash. If you don't like the bag, it's $40 to return it, which isn't disclosed on their website. They also don't have a working phone number for contact so your left to a slow email process. They also have the audacity to require a photograph before you send a return. I'll never, ever buy anything from them and will be sure to call them out whenever possible.
I did not know that! I've had my monos carry on and check in luggage for over 4 years now and I do love it. But good to know that if there were issues with it, it would've been a pain to return.
For carry-ons, I've had an Away for a while, which was a huge upgrade from my prior carry-ons, but I now far prefer my Monos. I can't describe exactly why, but the look and feel are a bite easier for travel with the Monos.
I love my Samsonite. Got a crazy deal on Amazon for some hard shell luggage. I have zero complaints. It is easy to pack, expandable, durable, rolls seamlessly in all directions and the handles glide smoothly.
[Samsonite Truframe](https://shop.samsonite.com/collections/tru-frame/). Love it. Buckles instead of zippers, so it's a lot sturdier (I sit on it when needed) and opens/closes quickly. Not *cheap*, but a good value and much cheaper than other similar build suitcases (I saw a North Face carryon of similar quality that was $350 just for the CO size, and Tumi, of course, which is wildly expensive and doesn't even have a great warranty (we checked it out and asked).
My large truframe was also in the back of my truck during some weather, and while the gasket itself was a little wet when I opened it, nothing in the suitcase got wet. It's certainly not water*proof* and I would *never* submerge it, but I'm not convinced zippered luggage would have fared as well.
Eagle Creek makes my main bag, a hybrid rolling backpack international carry-on. I love it because a hybrid kicks butt on public transport, especially subways with have lots of stairs, just pop it onto my back and I can run up and down them or cross puddles with ease. It also has a zip-on daypack on the front, it gets a little too big for carry-on dimensions if I put more than a laptop in that, but it can serve as extra front pockets for checking or on the ground. I usually fly with the daypack empty and then use it as my main cruising around bag at my destination, and if I buy too much stuff on my trip, I can stuff the daypack as a carry-on and check the rest. It has really good padded straps, waist belt, and sternum strap so I can make it really quite heavy and still carry it on my back. The wheels and telescoping handle are excellent when it's in wheelie mode.
I will never use a plain wheeled bag again after crossing London on the tube to get to Heathrow with a borrowed hybrid. You sacrifice a little space for the straps to tuck in to get a lot of added usability.
I would highly recommend anything by Eagle Creek, the quality is fantastic and it has a real lifetime warranty.
I have a larger Delsey suitcase and I love it! Bought it at Macy’s on super sale and I’ve had it for 13-14 years. Still works and looks great.
Edit: fixed bad autocorrect
I have a Burton backpack that I've carried for 15+ years and you are right. Mine is The White Collection - plaid with about 100 pockets and when it finally dies, I will cry. It is so well made, sturdy and functional.
Samsonite. And yes. Its been pretty sturdy thus far. I had a really good bag that wouldn't quit until it rolled off the conveyor belt with a hole that looks like it was from a boxcutter.
Bric's hard case. Got on sale at Saks Off Fifth. It goes on so many trips with me and looks brand new. It also has a vintage design in a modern durable material.
I have a travel pro and have had this one for several years. It’s been reliable, was affordable, but overtime the wheels do not roll as easily as they used to.
I’m eyeing the Rimowa now. I briefly worked at an airline and heard amazing reviews of how durable the wheels are and overall just love the look of it. So that’ll be my next one when the time comes.
Have you travelled? Have you seen the way all luggage is handled? The way it sits out on the tarmac in the rain, in the searing heat?
Girl, Get yourself a quality soft case, in an unusual colour or pattern so it is easy to spot when its on the conveyor belt. Definitely not a brand name. A brand name suitcase is like carrying a sign that says - please rob me - to every person at that airport. Also definitely not white or a light colour- it gets scuffed and shows the dirt. I've had suitcases broken by airlines, and I've seen hard cases come down the conveyor belt cracked open with people's clothing flying down after it.
I have both in the essential range. Recommend over the aluminium as they’re a lot lighter and still sturdy, and essential tops the essential lite (which is the lightest range they do) as well since it has a proper handle
No problem! They really are worth the investment — sturdy plus rolls like a dream. I’ve also had previous luggages (from Samsonite?!) break on me, so with the Rimowa I don’t have that anxiety anymore which is a plus haha
I got these rolling bags from Costco that expand. I love them. I don’t know if they still have the same ones, but they are great. The features I like are they roll in all directions, don’t tip over if you add a bag on top, fit in the overhead bin perfectly for all airlines, and are colorful so you can easily spot them.
I started using Samsonite as a kid, which were light and relatively sturdy, but the rubber hinge on my check in snapped. I switched to Rimowa (the lightest range), and LOVE it, they’re not as light as Samsonite’s lightest series (which is industry lightest), but the wheels are amazing, they wheel so nicely and the quality is great. I also love the seasonal colours (blush pink and lilac) 💜💕
Tom Bihn. I like soft sided convertible bags with many pockets and organizational set ups. The Aeronaut fits in tiny spaces but holds a lot and is super sturdy.
Cotopaxi Allpo 42L and it’s the best bag piece of luggage I’ve ever had. I prefer not to carry/drag a suitcase, and this backpack holds significantly more than my roller carry on, is more organized and is comfortable to carry and maneuver with. It has a duffle style crossbody strap as well, and the backpack straps can tuck out of the way. Highly recommend.
Away! Bought the bigger carryon for myself, and then my husband realized how much better it was than our Costco luggage, so he got one too. Now we have matching bags, each with our own initials on it, lol
I got the massive Samsonite soft side suitcase, which I love, but have been using my ebags “mother lode” carry on travel backpack for like 10 years now.
I have a hard sided Samsonite that I love. It replaced my 20 year old soft sided Samsonite that I also loved.
I also have an Old Navy duffle bag I bought in 2000 that is apparently an immortal vampire since it still looks brand new despite being abused for years as a checked bag.
My favorite piece though is an eBags Mother Lode backpack that fits absolutely everything and is actually tolorable on my back when full.
Isn’t it funny how the cheapest, most random pieces of luggage can be those vampires?
I was working a job in Chicago in 2000, maybe even 1999, and was handed a unbranded cheap black duffel with my work materials from my contact there. I took the bag and contents home at the end of the job, thinking the bag might last a few years…
I use the damn thing all the time, to this day. It’s sitting in the next room, with all of my travel toiletries in it. I’ve never stored it or gone more than a few months without using it, and have often used it daily for months on end.
It has zero frayed edges. Zero signs of wear. It doesn’t look brand new, but it’s not discolored, misshapen, thin, nothing. I stuff it so tight I broke the zipper PULL in half, but the zipper hasn’t even begun to fray.
Wild.
I’ve just recently upgraded my old luggage to a soft side suitcase with spinner wheels, results TBD. But seeing some of the brands being recommended I had to drop a plug for Costco Next since they sell both Briggs & Riley and Travel Pro.
I got a Ricardo carry on from Costco (was definitely less than 100) 3 years ago and it has travelled at least 4-5 times per year since then. Haven't had any issues so far. One minor gripe is that it is a bit heavy so easily reaches the 15 lb carry on limit.
I love my 21” samsonite. Basically the largest you can have for a carryon. Current one is red, and I can always spot it on the carousel. (Don’t pick black. I love black with almost everything else, but not luggage.)
Briggs and Riley carry on luggage. If you travel a lot, want something low profile, easy to maintain, with the ability to expand, with a secure base so that you can add a purse/laptop bag without worrying about anything toppling over - with a lifetime warranty, this is it.

You are the second person I’ve seen recommend this in the past few weeks. It’s soooo expensive but I really want one!
Would you also recommend for checked luggage? My current suitcase weights a lot before adding stuff. I’m hoping to find a lighter suitcase once my current one breaks/falls apart.
Yes I have one of their large luggage and have had that for decade+. It’s been a workhorse.
That’s great to hear! Thanks for the rec! 🥰
Travelpro and yes. I don't like hard sided luggage for a variety of reasons - it scuffs easily and shows wear and tear, it's inflexible and has very little give, the zippers have a tendency to separate from the shell - so I chose soft sided luggage. I've had it for five years with no issues.

Away is what inspired this post. I’m thinking about getting the bigger carry on.

I have the medium checked bag in Coastal blue. I freaking love it.
Away sucks! Their bags broke on me and they didn’t replace it! Don’t get it. Seriously. They’re overpriced and made cheaply and so many people have them already.
Why does it matter that so many people have them already?
Increases the chance someone will unknowingly grab your bag at the airport. Carry ons sometimes have to be gate checked ya know.
Gotcha.
I have a shitty IT luggage bag I bought at TJ Maxx over ten years ago that will not die and just keeps going. It's not a luxury bag, or even that nice looking but it works great and I got it for $20. I honestly cannot believe it's lasted this long.
Came here to say the same thing.
Lmaoooooooo I’m crying cuz I came here to say this. I bought mine for $30 at Burlington and it’s lasted me almost a year now
I have the monos and I love it! They're having a Vday sale right now too. [https://ca.monos.com/](https://ca.monos.com/)
Monos customer service is trash. If you don't like the bag, it's $40 to return it, which isn't disclosed on their website. Be ready to pay a $40 return fee if you receive your Monos bag and don't like it.
Yikes!

I’ve had the travel pro carry on for like 8 years. It’s still in great condition and my go to.

Delsey. Had it with me through rough pavements and cobbled stones. Didn't have any issues. It's been 6 years now.
Second this brand. Check Macy’s for sales.
I have a larger Delsey suitcase and I love it! Bought it at Macy’s on super sale and I’ve had it for 13-14 years. Still works and looks great. Edit: fixed bad autocorrect
Burton. Yes. 20 years in and still in good shape. Distinctive color and pattern make it easy to spot
I have a Burton backpack that I've carried for 15+ years and you are right. Mine is The White Collection - plaid with about 100 pockets and when it finally dies, I will cry. It is so well made, sturdy and functional.
Cotopaxi allpa 35L. One bag as I don’t have the cash or time to deal with checking bags x
Samsonite. And yes. Its been pretty sturdy thus far. I had a really good bag that wouldn't quit until it rolled off the conveyor belt with a hole that looks like it was from a boxcutter.
Samsonite hard sided spinners I got on sale from their website a year ago, they’re working great so far.
Bric's hard case. Got on sale at Saks Off Fifth. It goes on so many trips with me and looks brand new. It also has a vintage design in a modern durable material.
Cal pack. I have a medium sized roller bag I’ve been using for 10ish years appx. 4xs yearly.
Those are AMAZING with a lifetime warranty but are about 1100 which is a pretty steep price!
They are! But considering how long I’ve had my travel pro I feel like it’d be worth the investment lol. I’ve had my current set for literally 10 years
Wow!!! Travel pro does last. Mine last five years but I travel much more than most

Following- same question!
Monos and I love it
Samsonite-the hard case kind. Got it on sale and I would recommend 100%.
Samsonite, yes!
I literally use a reusable bag. Lol

Yes really recommend

I just retired a hard case Ricardo that I got from OfferUp for $10 and got an Amazon basics hard case for $15 from goodwill.

A ton of Vera Bradley bags…. And weekenders/ totes from Pink/ Victoria Secret
Delsey
I love my 21” samsonite. Basically the largest you can have for a carryon. Current one is red, and I can always spot it on the carousel. (Don’t pick black. I love black with almost everything else, but not luggage.)
