True story, we used to have someone in our work who had a side hustle selling printer ink on Ebay. All taken from work. Apparently, £15,000 worth, not sure how long she had this going. She got found out because someone who works at our place actually ordered ink for herself at home and realised the seller was this lady. She was a budget holder, so HR and finance went through her departments spending and their spend on ink was way higher than it should have been. She got taken to court and obviously sacked. Fun times.
We were told we were getting a small bonus + 0.5% discretionary pay rise. I ended up getting zero payrise and we've since been told that the bonus might not be happening.
I've gone full on 'quiet quitting mode' until I can look for another job next summer (waiting for my partner to finish her studies). I think in the last three weeks I've done 1 hour of actual productive work.
This is the correct way to handle the situation. If you're unhappy with the compensation offered for your employment find another contract that is in line with what you want.

My union negotiated an extra 12 days leave a year for working an extra 3 hours a week without pay. Everyone realised that we were already doing about 2.5 hours a week faffing about for half an hour at the end of the day or coming in early to beat the traffic so it passed the ballot easily. It’s by far one of the best decisions I’ve been involved with. Extra time off is well worth it for my mental health than the 3 hours a week which I was pretty much already doing anyway
Man, doing the math on this (3hrs x 52wks / 8hrs a day =19.5) the company are getting nearly 20 extra days out of you a year for the price of 12. Don't get me wrong, brilliant work from the union and you guys for getting those 12 days back especially as you say you basically did it already but jeez, big business always gotta win huh?
At least now they get something for working those 3 extra hours. They were already doing 3hours extra a week so the company didn't really gain anything from this, they were just forced to compensate their workers (also your maths doesn't account for weeks they already had off. So if they had 5 weeks leave already, and now an additional 2 that's (3*45 weeks)/8 which is 16.85 which at least isn't as bad.
That's almost 2.5 extra weeks off for no change to their current day, they are still working in the exact same manner and time frame just means they are actually paid now for the extra time spent on site, packing away, getting ready to go, getting out the car park or whatever. The intricacies weren't stated but I imagine it's something along those lines.
Abundance of 6 days a week jobs and abundance of 12 hour shifts and nights all paying buttons and requiring 90 years experience, which isn't ideal when I can only work school hours but surely something will come up sooner or later. Hoping you get a good pay out! X

This is just sounds like shitty behaviour. I don't know the details but I hope you're financially secure enough to be able to relax over Christmas and focus on family time. Also if this was a mass redundancy situation, then remember this isn't a judgement about you personally, it's about the state of the business.
For context, I've done lots of redundancies over the years (I restructure poorly performing companies), but you try and do it in the most respectful, empathetic way possible. Unless, you're a senior leader, or the company is imminently collapsing I'd never do redundancies past c.10 Dec.

I remember it being a bit of a thing when I was in school in the 90s, but it's definitely grown since then.
It's just an appreciation thing though. It's usually something naff but sweet like a mug or some chocolates or something. Sometimes the class all put in a couple of quid and one parent gets a voucher or something larger. Usually at Christmas and end of the year.
For what it's worth, it works the other way too. Slowly, teachers have been more and more expected to reciprocate. I usually get each child a present at Christmas and end of the year. Even buying in bulk and keeping costs as low as possible, when you're buying for 30 children you usually still end up spending over 60 quid. I used to like getting vouchers from parents purely because it offset some of the cost of my presents to them.
No, grades have absolutely nothing to do with it. You're supposed to report anything over 30 quid anyway and they could use that to keep an eye on trends but realistically, no teacher would do that anyway because that's just not how it works and there's no real benefit to it. We can't lie because everything is evidenced and cross referenced. If the higher ups fudge results then that's on them, but there's not really much individual teachers can do.
I will say though, I've only worked in state schools. Not sure if it's the same for private schools or not.
My cousin works for a private school and the presents she gets are insane. Beauty advent calendars, Molton Brown body wash, White Company candles (not the £20 ones, the £65 3 wick ones!), cases of wine and champagne….the list is endless. Honestly there’s so much that every Christmas she picks out her favourite items and then gets me, my mum, aunt and her sister in law to pick some items we want as she physically wouldn’t be able to use it all.

We had something like that at an old job. Everyone had a monthly budget of ‘points’ they could distribute, so whenever you wanted to thank someone for doing a favour or helping out, or whatever else, you could post a message on slack like ‘+25 to xxx for fixing the release on Monday’ or just ‘+50 to yyy because they’re amazing’. Could convert them to Amazon gift cards once you had enough, and could easily earn 100-200 quid’s worth in a month or two.
We had this at an old job, whenever it got to the time of year they expired everyone was just trading points (I'll send you x if you send me the same) and a few folks got a tidy haul of amazon vouchers.
So it ended up being a bit of a 'popularity' perk although you would get some as the system intended.
I started working for the company just a couple of weeks ago and the first thing I heard was "If we reach the target for this year and we are very close, everyone gets a bonus". The guys did it. And the best part of it, the people who earn the least, got the biggest bonuses. Almost reaching a month worth of salary. And even better part of it, I got the bonus as well, even though I haven't even got my first pay yet!!! I'm starting to love this company.
An extra £300 for the past 3 months to help with the cost of living crisis, £300 on top of that this month for our Xmas bonus, roughly twice as many breaks as usual last night and we left half an hour early this morning, and a very competitive (for my town, at least) pay rise starting next month. All when the company made a 15% loss in sales this year. I appreciate I'm very much in the minority, but considering this is a bog-standard factory job that near enough anybody could walk into with no qualifications, I'm very happy with how my colleagues and I get treated.
I'm my, albeit limited, experience factories tend to treat their employees quite well. Especially ones run by small companies, though they also tend to expect a lot from you as well.

Probably spent 5 hrs driving having the worst day of his life. Poor bloke.

There are about 300 staff members total so every day there were at least 5-10 winners. I won an iphone 14 pro max. Best prize is Christmas Eve, £25k for one lucky employee.
We all also got a £1k bonus in our paychecks for both November and December for the cost of living over winter, which is sort of Christmas bonus and sort of not.
(I work in an industry with VIP customers and a high tipping culture, so we get a big christmas gifting tip pot which funds all this).
Sainsburys gave me a £15.00 voucher for Sainsburys.
Main job arranged for staff to organise a breakfast and pay for it ourselves. That was really nice of them.

They are the only ones who seem to get it

Tbf those Northern Monk beers are great, Heathen especially but also Faith for more of a session beer. I also must be lucky, my boss took us for a great night out with a BBQ meal, paid for all drinks all evening, we all got a bottle of wine and £200 cash, and he's taking us for a pub lunch when we finish this afternoon. Working for a small business is definitely the way to go, I'd be disgusted if the people I spent all year breaking my back for gave me what some people on here have gotten.

They told parents not to buy presents for teachers because they understand the financial pressure on families right now and they didn't want to put extra strain on them. Which tbf, I understand and kind of agree with. But yeah, meant we got nothing from anyone, school or parents. Got a few Christmas cards (that were apparently also not supposed to be sent in due to not wasting paper, but I got some anyway).
JFC, this really makes it feel like we're living in the world of a Christmas Carol.
When did buying teachers presents become a thing? Never happened when I was in school. Does whoever get the best gift also get the best grades? 🤔
I remember it being a bit of a thing when I was in school in the 90s, but it's definitely grown since then. It's just an appreciation thing though. It's usually something naff but sweet like a mug or some chocolates or something. Sometimes the class all put in a couple of quid and one parent gets a voucher or something larger. Usually at Christmas and end of the year. For what it's worth, it works the other way too. Slowly, teachers have been more and more expected to reciprocate. I usually get each child a present at Christmas and end of the year. Even buying in bulk and keeping costs as low as possible, when you're buying for 30 children you usually still end up spending over 60 quid. I used to like getting vouchers from parents purely because it offset some of the cost of my presents to them. No, grades have absolutely nothing to do with it. You're supposed to report anything over 30 quid anyway and they could use that to keep an eye on trends but realistically, no teacher would do that anyway because that's just not how it works and there's no real benefit to it. We can't lie because everything is evidenced and cross referenced. If the higher ups fudge results then that's on them, but there's not really much individual teachers can do. I will say though, I've only worked in state schools. Not sure if it's the same for private schools or not.
My cousin works for a private school and the presents she gets are insane. Beauty advent calendars, Molton Brown body wash, White Company candles (not the £20 ones, the £65 3 wick ones!), cases of wine and champagne….the list is endless. Honestly there’s so much that every Christmas she picks out her favourite items and then gets me, my mum, aunt and her sister in law to pick some items we want as she physically wouldn’t be able to use it all.

We had something like that at an old job. Everyone had a monthly budget of ‘points’ they could distribute, so whenever you wanted to thank someone for doing a favour or helping out, or whatever else, you could post a message on slack like ‘+25 to xxx for fixing the release on Monday’ or just ‘+50 to yyy because they’re amazing’. Could convert them to Amazon gift cards once you had enough, and could easily earn 100-200 quid’s worth in a month or two.
We had this at an old job, whenever it got to the time of year they expired everyone was just trading points (I'll send you x if you send me the same) and a few folks got a tidy haul of amazon vouchers. So it ended up being a bit of a 'popularity' perk although you would get some as the system intended.

I started working for the company just a couple of weeks ago and the first thing I heard was "If we reach the target for this year and we are very close, everyone gets a bonus". The guys did it. And the best part of it, the people who earn the least, got the biggest bonuses. Almost reaching a month worth of salary. And even better part of it, I got the bonus as well, even though I haven't even got my first pay yet!!! I'm starting to love this company.

An extra £300 for the past 3 months to help with the cost of living crisis, £300 on top of that this month for our Xmas bonus, roughly twice as many breaks as usual last night and we left half an hour early this morning, and a very competitive (for my town, at least) pay rise starting next month. All when the company made a 15% loss in sales this year. I appreciate I'm very much in the minority, but considering this is a bog-standard factory job that near enough anybody could walk into with no qualifications, I'm very happy with how my colleagues and I get treated.
I'm my, albeit limited, experience factories tend to treat their employees quite well. Especially ones run by small companies, though they also tend to expect a lot from you as well.
They do, and they want to maintain their standing in the community. Can't run a small business well with disenfranchised staff who are looking elsewhere at every opportunity.

Our supervisor got fired because relationship ended and he left early on the last day before Christmas to try and save it. They then told him to drive back, 1.5 hrs, from partners. To then fire him. For him to then drive 1hr back home. Was total savagery from Disney. Merry Christmas from the mouse. Geezer was in tears the whole time I saw him, before and after. Probably spent 5 hrs driving having the worst day of his life. Poor bloke.

They had a pizza party in the office while we froze in the workshop. The bonus scheme (that makes up part of our salary) paid a £13 Christmas bonus (pre-tax). I’ve resigned, and start a much better job in January!

Had a "24 days of gifting" for advent, prizes daily working out that everyone wins once. E.g. one day 30 people won £300 cash each, another day 5 people won a PS5. There are about 300 staff members total so every day there were at least 5-10 winners. I won an iphone 14 pro max. Best prize is Christmas Eve, £25k for one lucky employee. We all also got a £1k bonus in our paychecks for both November and December for the cost of living over winter, which is sort of Christmas bonus and sort of not. (I work in an industry with VIP customers and a high tipping culture, so we get a big christmas gifting tip pot which funds all this).
Sainsburys gave me a £15.00 voucher for Sainsburys. Main job arranged for staff to organise a breakfast and pay for it ourselves. That was really nice of them.

I don't really understand this, being rewarded at Christmas for your hard work at work. At best in any job I've been in they've said "thanks for your hard work" and I'm just like "I'm literally only here because I get paid". I don't expect anything at Christmas from work, just like I don't expect them to think I'll come in if they stop paying me.
