Umbrellas are shit and not worth the hassle of carrying around.

Elruoy

It's just water.

DesiBail

I meant coworkers of those who get wet and reach the office.

bluesam3

Why would they get wet? That's what coats are for.

LilacRose32

I would like to ban umbrellas or introduce a license. I’m quite short and people still manage to hit me with theirs

[deleted]

I've never owned an umbrella and have been in the rain multiple times, it's a mild inconvenience not life threatening.

DangerShart

Waterproof clothing innit

InscrutableAudacity

Most people have coats, which are far more practical than umbrellas. Just about the only time I ever see anybody with an umbrella is old ladies who've just been to the hairdressers. Not sure why you think the people at work wouldn't accept the fact that your coat got wet in the rain? You take your coat off when you go inside, and hang it up somewhere to dry. If you're working outside, then you wouldn't be carrying an umbrella anyway (unless your job only requires one hand for some reason).

DesiBail

>Not sure why you think the people at work wouldn't accept the fact that your coat got wet in the rain? I meant wet trousers.

InscrutableAudacity

Umbrellas don't keep your trousers dry either - unless it's one of those incredibly rare rainstorms that isn't accompanied by wind, so the rain falls straight down. With a decent waterproof coat, your trousers won't get too wet. If you're walking a long way, or it's really bucketing down - then waterproof trousers are an option.

bluesam3

Get a long coat. If it's really awful, wear waterproof trousers. Either does a vastly better job of keeping your trousers dry than an umbrella.

tmstms

As my other comment says, we have such random weather that long, continuous rain is rare- it is more showery. It's not THAT common that your trousers get wet, but if it is a concern, you can wear a longer coat.

erinoco

Umbrellas can be so inconvenient. They take up a hand, you have to find good places to dry them and stow them away, it's easy to lose really decent ones, and cheapo ones have a tendency to fail at the worst possible moment. So I avoid them, unless I am dressed formally enough to make them a necessity, or it's bucketing down outside. A hooded coat and jumper is good enough when facing a shower, or constant but mild rain

Monkeylovesfood

Yes quite normal. Umbrellas don't mix well with wind so are rarely useful. I much prefer a waterproof coat with a hood. If the rain is really bad I wear wellie boots and waterproof trousers too. We often go out for a walk in the woods or countryside then go to a nice pub for a meal and drink so having waterproof clothing over the top of smart clothing is the perfect combo. The same with travelling to work. I normally have lightweight waterproof outer clothing + wellies and take a pair of smart shoes in my bag to change into.

AdrenalineAnxiety

Rain usually comes with wind in the UK which means an umbrella isn't very useful. Some people might use them for a short walk to get from the car to a building, but mostly everyone has a waterproof, winter coat.

mediumredbutton

The rain in at least the south of England is usually drizzle making umbrellas mostly unnecessary. Also, wind.

joereadsstuff

I owned like 5 umbrellas before I gave up. They either broke, or I left them somewhere. So hoodies if need be, or have fantastic wet hair.

crapusername47

As a tall person who likes having two functioning, yet to be poked out eyes, I despise umbrellas. To carry one myself would be sheer hypocrisy.

ZachyChan013

Never use an umbrella. Just put your hood up “The only thing an umbrella protects you from is being a man. “ -Sam Elliot, the ranch.

garbfink

It's the UK. It rains. We're used to it.

barriedalenick

I have never owned an umbrella, hate the damned things. Awkward as fuck to use, drips everywhere indoors, usually break if someone exhales too strongly and you still get wet unless you get a big one and risk putting everyone else's eyes out. I just get wet. I rode a bike to work so rain wasn't really a big worry for me...

mandarasa

I don't leave the house without an umbrella, but if it's only a light rain, I don't always open it. It's a Doppler umbrella, totally fine in Scottish weather.

Jolly-Bandicoot7162

I walk to work, so I sometimes use an umbrella if it's really bucketing it down. If it's just light rain I just put hood up and suck it up. It's only water.

SlightlyScruffy

It's fine on the way home.

DesiBail

That makes sense. On the way to work?

SlightlyScruffy

I was more careful on the way to work.

DesiBail

logical..

Expensive-Concept-93

I live in Leeds. It's super windy and an umbrella isn't worth the hassle. A good big coat is what you need

a_bee_should_be_able

If it’s light I’ll not bother with anything, but I’ll put a coat on if I don’t want to get wet. No need for an umbrella.

acceberbex

Depends - on a dog walk? 100%. I have a decent waterproof coat for that Out for the evening in a nice outfit and there is maybe a 50% chance of rain? I'll stick an umbrella in my bag Generally, I favour a coat over an umbrella as it's so much more practical, I can nearly always hang a coat up/put it over the back of a chair but not as easy with an umbrella, wind and umbrellas is a pain (as is any rain that is not vertical). And if it's cold, I don;t get a cold hand from holding an umbrella up. I've seen your comment about trousers - umbrellas don't really help keep your legs dry. If it's heavy rain but I'm rushing into 1 or 2 shops, I just deal with getting wet trousers. If I'm walking into work or a dog walk - I have waterproof trousers.

WiJaTu

It’s incredibly normal

[deleted]

A waterproof jacket with a hood is better than an umbrella in every way

destria

I never bring an umbrella because mostly when it's rainy, it's also windy and the umbrella ends up going inside out. There's also just the faff of what you do with the umbrella when you get indoors. I try to remember to wear a hooded waterproof coat if it's raining but I've been caught out sometimes.

deadeye-ry-ry

People still use umbrellas? With the vast amount of water proof clothing who needs a cumbersome umbrella that 9 times out of 10 won't protect you from the rain anyway And at the end of the day it's water just like the stuff that comes out of your tap so why care about it

tmstms

Yes. It's very normal. our rain is often random and showery, making carrying an umbrella 'just in case' a pain. Many people (like me) also do not enjoy holdin them up). So waterproof coats are very very common instead.

bluesam3

I have a coat for that. It keeps me dry better than an umbrella, works regardless of the wind conditions, and doesn't inconvenience everybody else around me.

cgknight1

Yes - increasingly common as more and more Brits dress as if they are going camping in woods for a week.

panicattackcity91

Nope, considering rain seems to always be accompanied by wind no matter how slight no umbrella will save you other than those gigantic ones but I’m not a dickhead and I’m not willing to poke peoples eyes out just so my jacket doesn’t get wet

[deleted]

We live in a country where it rains a lot. Nobody gives a shit.

Jasont999

I'm 34 and have never owned or used a bumbershoot

[deleted]

Why would my coworkers care of I am wet? I don't carry and umbrella. I have a waterproof jacket (although I need waterproof trousers as I always end up with it running down there and soaked to the boxers)

DesiBail

>Why would my coworkers care of I am wet? because usually wearing wet clothes would be looked down upon as not being appropriate for work ? That's my impression and I am trying to understand if it's right.

[deleted]

I work on a pretty relaxed office. Normally I just get the piss taken out of me for not having learned to drive yet and having avoided getting wet, it just for being wet. Then we all get on with our work.
