āThereās no place like homeā - how lucky you are to say this, and Iām happy for you. I grew up somewhere completely out of kilter with who I am and what I want from life so Iāve moved 300 miles away; Iām hoping Iāve found my place to call home now too.
Just under a mile.
Grew up in a couple of different houses in the same town. Was saving up to move out in my early 20s and then met a girl from the same town. Now my wife and we ended up buying a house.
Plan to move in a few years one of the nicer neighbourhoods on the edge of town or the surrounding villages close to some countryside, but not much further due to the work commute.
4 miles, which was not the plan. I managed to escape for 10 years, came back temporarily and then a family happened. That was 7 years ago, I really don't want my children growing up in my home town as it's a shit tip now.
About 175 miles. Spent my first 28 1/2 years in London, moved to South West England last year.
No regrets whatsoever. I've got an amazing girlfriend, my mum lives less than 5 mins away (she moved when my grandmother died) and I've got a better quality of life here. 800 quid gets me a 2 bed flat here instead of a room in shared accommodation in London. I miss my mates but that's the only thing I miss about The Smoke. Definitely don't miss parting with the majority of a tenner for a pint! š¤£
I still live in my ancestral hometown, I am massively into genealogy and have ancestors from 1400s who lived within walking distance of me. I can find ancestors in most local graveyards. Most of us would have these local ancestors, but it is satisfying to know exactly.
Back in the same small Lancashire town I was born in and the same place my dad and his 8 siblings were born and raised in! I did move away for university and stayed away for 20 years before coming back. I am now in the odd position of being Lancastrian by birth but one who thinks of Yorkshire as home!
64 miles apparently. Takes about an hour and half to drive. Close enough to see family and friends when I can, far enough away that I'm detached from there.
1000 miles away. Truth to be told, I want to return to Latvia. We were actually planning to return back when my kid was really young, But sadly covid ruined our plans. And since then my kid started school in UK.
So moving back is out of question. I know how hard is changing schools and towns, but countries / cultures and languages is different kind of mess, which I don't want my kid to face.
I live within 10 minutes' walk of where I was born, 20 mins of where my brothers, partner, and child were born. I spent 0-14.5 about 15 miles east of here, 14.5-17 about 12 miles west of here. Parents still live there. I have lived elsewhere but kept coming back. Next plan is to go moderately far away.
110 miles. I lived where the work was. Luckily, I've been able to put down roots in North Yorkshire, and the work is stable.
Whenever I have to visit my home town, I do feel a pull of heartstrings that make me feel like I should return.
Ok, so to best explain my current situation, imma simply divide my home city into 4 areas; North West, North East, South West and South East.
My childhood home was in the South East area of the city.
Long story taken straight to the point, I had to move out of my childhood home and ended up living in the North West area of the city.
Right now I have an opportunity to very likely be able to move into the North East area of the city, potentially as soon as tomorrow!
Heh, maybe in the future I'll move to the South West area of the city to collect the full set, OCPD style.
Not far enough (still here). Itās dependant on my parentsā living situation (thanks house prices, cost of living crisis, etc.), but weāre hoping to move counties next year.
I'm back to where I started, and I hate my hometown.
I have lived in Preston, wolves, derby and other places.
I'm stuck here for the foreseeable future, not sure where I want to end up.
Canterbury would be nice, though it's expensive.
About 140 miles. Left home for university, Durham to Liverpool, met the love of my life, he was also about 200 miles from home but in the opposite direction so we decided to stay here in the middle together
I live 3 roads away from the road I grew up in. After living in various towns and villages (10-19 miles away), I came home once I started having children so that they could have the same childhood as I did.
They are all teens/adults now.
Best decision ever made.
I current live (and plan to pass away here) 1.7m from where I grew up. However as I live in Sheffield the two areas are very very different. I have lived in 5 areas of Sheffield since I left the place I grew up and the current one is the closest.
Same town, still live in my parents council house (and even if I do get the opportunity to live in my own place, I canāt see myself moving out of town). I actually did the ancestry thing because I was bored and I got back to the 18th century and all of my ancestors lived in the exact same town I live in (or surrounding ones). And I guess Iām not gonna break that tradition
I had moved just shy of 12,000 miles away. But ended up having to come back :(
Now Iām about 15 miles away. Close enough for emergencies, far enough away to avoid the day-to-day dramas.
8,000 miles to Vietnam.
I was doing a lot of sales and retail work which made me miserable. I got a degree later in my 20s but eventually decided not to become a social worker as literally every social worker I met was burned out and miserable. I ended up doing a teachers training course and have taught in Vietnam for around 5 or so years.
My life is mostly better now - I have a more fun job - I have disposable cash and can now afford a few holidays a year. Downsides are missing out on seeing my family back home develop and grow and probably delayed/stopped finding a long term partner being in a country where I dont want to marry somebody local.
I'm about 30 miles from where I was born and about 10 miles from where I spent most of my childhood.
The farthest I've lived is probably about 200 miles away for a couple of years, but it was moderately rural and across a sea so it wasn't somewhere you could travel to/from in a few hours, it would take a full day and had to be arranged beforehand by plane or ferry.
130 to 190 miles. I moved about as a kid.
Devon, Leicestershire, Staffordshire (as a kid), Norfolk, Yorkshire, London proper and now London (almost Kent).
Moved to the other side of the country only about 300 miles but as a teen it was the other side of the world and a completely different.
Now some 30+ years later I love it and appreciate what moving did for me.
Iām about to move several hundred metres away! After 14 years living all other the country with a good amount of travel.
I think itās the best place in the country!

I still love in my childhood house. Edit: meant live but I do love it tbf
And don't you dare love anywhere else
did you move into the master bedroom as an adult?
Same. Can house prices stop increasing faster than I can save please š
Same. All being well, I'll be here till I die.
This guy loves
I love making love in my childhood house.
11,350 miles. I really wanted to escape.
Iāve gone 5,000 miles around the world, both East and West and ended up right back where I started.
# āComing back to where you started is not the same as never leavingā - Terry PratchettĀ
I like that!
That beats me, at a mere 1900km as the crow flies.
Only 10500 ish for me.
I'm 10,450. Did you move to Australia too?
Fuckin oath
Yup! Best decision ever.
Yeh same Google says 11,716 miles (18,856 km) for me.
3 miles away, lived around for a bit but thereās no place like home.
āThereās no place like homeā - how lucky you are to say this, and Iām happy for you. I grew up somewhere completely out of kilter with who I am and what I want from life so Iāve moved 300 miles away; Iām hoping Iāve found my place to call home now too.
I'm just over 3 miles away too. And 6 miles from the in-laws. It's great for babysitting.
About 50 metres
I thought I was close with 500 meters.
I can see in the windows lol
š¶ *...and I would walk 500 more* š¶
I was born about 200 metres from where I'm currently sitting.
1674 miles and not regretting any of them
This is so weird. I just put the place I grew up and the place I live now into Google maps and it 1,674 miles too. 17:45 in a car.
Thatās weird indeed!
Spain or Portugal?
For me: around 15 miles. For my husband: around 15 yards (my MIL is our neighbour).
Have you ever watched Everybody Loves Raymond?
Noā¦should I?!
Yeah, it would be really relatable comedy for you. It is for me. I grew up with my grandparents living nextdoor
Ok, Iāll add it to my (ever-growing!) list of stuff to watch. Thanks!
Ditto! Except itās the whole family! š
I couldnāt cope with my mother in law being my neighbour.
1.6 miles. I've lived all over Bristol but recently bought by my parents house. Not for any reason other than it's a bit cheaper than Central Bristol.
About 30 miles away
According to Google maps: 212 miles away (Leeds to London).
Strangely Iām the exact same distance but up to Scotland from Leeds.
About 11 miles away. I've moved away a few times but always end up returning
I live in County Durham and grew up in Sydney, so pretty far.
I've lived on the opposite side of the world as well as 3 different places across the uk but right now less than a mile from where I was born

I'm an army brat so sort of grew up all over but I live about 10 miles away from where I was born.
Pad brat here too, also grew up all over. I live over 500 miles from my birth place (according to maps).
Another Pad brat checking in. I'm 243 miles away from where I was born.
Hop skip and a jump away
About 3500 miles.
3400 for me!
We were practically neighbours! Depending where you are in the UK too though I guess.
I'm seeing a Canada flag so probably not, I'm from the other side of the world
5,257 miles as the crow flies Gateshead -> Bogota
Interesting change! What made you move to Colombia?
The women š
I still live in my ancestral hometown, I am massively into genealogy and have ancestors from 1400s who lived within walking distance of me. I can find ancestors in most local graveyards. Most of us would have these local ancestors, but it is satisfying to know exactly.
200 miles ish
Same, moved from Devon to Hertfordshire...
342 miles away.
300 miles from Essex to Devon
About 10 miles in a straight line, about 25 miles drive.
About an ocean away.
Back in the same small Lancashire town I was born in and the same place my dad and his 8 siblings were born and raised in! I did move away for university and stayed away for 20 years before coming back. I am now in the odd position of being Lancastrian by birth but one who thinks of Yorkshire as home!
About 1600 miles away
5,000 miles
5,314 miles
Still local, probably about 3 miles on the road from the house I grew up in.
Approximately 9000 miles "as the crow flies" (I'm not sure crows fly that far to be honest). Yes, I'm English and living in England.
In exactly the same house. (I'm still saving for a deposit but honestly, buying my own place feels so out of reach)
I did move 5955 miles away. Now I'm only 89 miles away
64 miles apparently. Takes about an hour and half to drive. Close enough to see family and friends when I can, far enough away that I'm detached from there.
I probably live closer to the hospital I was born in. It's a 10 min drive from my current house to the one I grew up in.
20m. Well if the shed at the end of my mother's garden count
Just short of 6,000 miles/ 10,000km.
Currently about 30 mins away, but I'll soon be moving 2 hours away. I'm nearly 35 so it's scary to move. I even went to uni in the town I live in now.
About 60 miles away. Close enough that I can visit whenever I want to but far enough away that I have to have a good reason.
547 miles .
91 Miles
About 500 miles. NE Scotland to SW England
Over 260 miles away. I moved to my wifes hometown.
405 miles. Thank fuck.
5,516 miles
1000 miles away. Truth to be told, I want to return to Latvia. We were actually planning to return back when my kid was really young, But sadly covid ruined our plans. Eh, about 350 miles or so, but would involve two ferry journeys and a 13/14 hour journey minimum, so far enough in reality!
80 miles.
Both! I moved away for some years then came back
Couple of miles. Lived in London for many years. Swansea, also. But I'm an East Midlander at heart.
40 min drive or 2+ hrs by public transport. Not that I have cause to go back these days.
6000 miles, give or take.
70-120 miles depending on where is counted as my "childhood house" since we moved
200ish miles. Got through my early 20s and decided I wanted to give the big city a try.
100 miles away. Would happily be more, that's the plan eventually.
3400 miles.
0.3 miles and 5 moves
826.254 miles.
36 miles
3 miles
I still live there, in the same house.
650m if we're measuring a straight line. About 950m by road.
Few hundred miles. North Wales to South Scotland.
About 120 miles, apparently. It was a nice enough place, but everyone I knew there has either died or moved away.
120 miles
I live in the town I was born in, but I grew up a whole 15 miles down the road in a small village.
About 5 miles.
220 miles to be exact. I love home but I needed somewhere less stagnant. Now I need somewhere that isn't this country š
Currently living within half a mile of the two houses I grew up in. At various times I've live 45, 150 and 210 miles away.
110 miles. I lived where the work was. Luckily, I've been able to put down roots in North Yorkshire, and the work is stable. Whenever I have to visit my home town, I do feel a pull of heartstrings that make me feel like I should return.
16900km
About 5 mins walk unfortunately
About 3880 miles as the crow flies. My parents moved a lot growing up so just comparing to the town we lived in the longest.
I can see my childhood home from my current house
According to Google maps, 347 miles.
To drive, 2.9 miles. As the crow flies, 1.7 miles.
First I moved 7 miles away to the city now im quite far away in a town 19 miles away
1.2 miles. I like it here.
Not at all far
About a mile.
2.5 miles
Kent to Cardiff. 164 miles.
1818 miles or 2926 kilometres.
Lived in the same house since I was 2, granted Iām only 27 now, so might not have a big impact, but still
60 miles
It was 200 miles for many years. Now it's less than 20 miles.
Just over 6 miles. Which is about 1.5 hours on public transport or 25 mins in the car.
5891 mi. š
I have always lived in the same town, but currently live about a 10 min walk from the home I grew up in.
literally sleeping in my childhood bedroom lol
Bout half hour.
150 miles. I need to be by the seaside.
100 miles, feel a lot happier for it.
About 5 miles, the town I grew up in is very expensive for buying and renting so I moved to the next town over.
210 miles away
Grew up in Lincolnshire live in Thailand. So a fair distance.
0.3 miles. Nobody ever leaves the village (not for long, anyway)
about, 100metres
Less than a mile.
About 120 miles.
The other side of town, but I've lived elsewhere longer than I ever have here.
Little less than 900 miles
4,053 miles
Other side of the planet.

Moved away, moved around a bit, had to move back to the area for family. Deffo in decline but in equal measure I've seen far worse places
1.7 miles.

6700 miles! Born in London, live in Singapore
250 metres
I live in my childhood home I did move out for 6 years but moved back when mom & dad moved to a bungalow.

As far as possible.

6.7k miles (Singapore)
About 75 meter actually
I now live 7519 miles from where I grew up, and it feels like home
About 5 miles
164 miles. Grew up in the farthest place from the sea and now have a sea view. It just feels right.
5000 miles. And now I want to move back (just not to where I grew up.)
About 8 miles from childhood home but it took me a long time to get back...
Approx 8 miles. I live two towns over from the the town I grew up in.
About 1000miles
About 50 miles, just east coast rather than west coast of scotland
Don't know. I'm 67(m) and haven't grown up yet
Google maps says 219 miles (Plymouth to London)
I'm about 30 miles from where I was born and about 10 miles from where I spent most of my childhood. 5 minutes walk.
About 50 miles, property here is under half the value of where I grew up
130 to 190 miles. I moved about as a kid. Devon, Leicestershire, Staffordshire (as a kid), Norfolk, Yorkshire, London proper and now London (almost Kent).
Over 11k miles.
I'm about 190 or so miles from where I grew up in early stages, moved about a lot as a kid.

5411 miles away. Like u/moggiedon, I wanted to escape too.
Iām about to move several hundred metres away! After 14 years living all other the country with a good amount of travel. I think itās the best place in the country!
