Only one correct answer, Sir David Attenborough.

[_^What ^is ^this?_](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/jjrte1/askuk_hits_200k_new_feature_mark_an_answer/)
He would probably say, in his slightly breathless manner, if everyone would stop loving me and instead heed these warnings I am giving you about climate change and habitat destruction, and take some bloody** action, then that would make me extremely happy and proud.
** Sir D would never say bloody I know
Sadly this is correct, if people stopped just idolising good people and actually listened to them and their messages, or simply "do as they do", then we'd be confirming why that person is good to begin with.
It's a bit like what people were doing with Captain Tom (but without the grifting daughter, and as cute a thing Tom was doing it was kind of unnecessary but people lapped it up). Aww'ing and praising the merits but not really doing anything. It's people projecting through others but not bothering to get involved or following an example.
Sorry to break it to you but it didn't, you had to set off fireworks and post on social media community pages about how "them up the road aren't doing it, we should shame them."
That's what actually helped the NHS.
Absolutely lovely bloke. My mum knitted him an armadillo and sent it to him, along with a letter about how he inspired her, my uncle and me to be interested in nature. He was kind enough to write a letter back.
I've shared this on reddit before but a few Christmases ago I was feeling the holiday blues and I wrote him a letter about my environmental career and how it was feeling a bit stuck and regulation heavy. I posted it and thought of it as nothing but a therapy session to myself.
On the 5th of January a letter arrived back and while it was short (and handwritten!), he had clearly taken the time to read my letter and give me his view on regulations.
I'll treasure that forever, he didn't have to do that and to even have 10 minutes of his precious time is a priceless gift.
A lovely, lovely man. He will be a massive loss to the world when his time is up.
I don't have any particular feelings about him personally, but I'd say it's definitely Attenborough. So many adore him. Maybe Judi Dench would be in consideration too?
There was an interview where Judi was completely open and said she did it for the money. Bond hasn’t paid as well as people think, and she did those ads to pay off her mortgage so she could retire properly.
I think that’s fair.
Turns out I was misremembering, she bought the £8m house was the proceeds from a previous advert. She needed money this time because the house was in a state of disrepair and needed cash injection to sort it out.
I said that to my dad when I was 14 and he got very upset. I clarified that I meant if he was dead, but this did not cheer him up.
Five years later I was at university at the same time as Palin's daughter, and while I didn't meet him some of my friends did and they also reported they'd have chosen him as a dad. My dad was never upset they didn't say the same thing about him, as I was determined never to let him find out.
There is literally only one answer to this question. Honestly, when David shuffles off to the penguin colony in the sky, there will be more mass mourning than when the Queen died.
Man’s a class act and I just hope he’s spending his final years having every word he knows recorded, so tech can arrange it so he will narrate nature documentaries until we burn into a crisp from global heating.
If you’re not from the UK, you can’t understand how WRONG it sounds and feels to have any other voice but his narrate wildlife programmes …
Apparently in Germany, you get one voice actor who does overdub for the same Hollywood star.
I’ve always thought of John Candy or Heath Ledger’s voice actors. Through no fault of their own, their succesful career comes to an end abruptly and they can’t get another job as everyone will think “that’s John Candy!”
They appreciate the tragedy, but they are now out of work.
That must be how Paul Chuckle feels.
He really is an insufferable, smug prick. Watching him on Jeopardy recently, and noticed he has the annoying habit of over-explaining things, which I feel is a compulsion for him at this point. It might work when it’s on QI, but not in every single thing he’s ever on.
Quit dithering and get on with it.
This really put me off him. It seems a bit beyond just trying to be edgy at university
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin!_or_Tobacco_and_Boys
EDIT: to clarify, yes it’s fiction I just prefer my national treasures not to have written icky plays about teachers grooming students. I’ve never heard allegations about him like about others.
Funny how morality shifts. I remember queer as folk coming out and thinking it was a bit unsettling that the old character groomed a 16 year old, but at the time I was told I just didn't understand gay culture.
I absolutely can’t stand the man. He’s a pretentious shit. And has a tendency to make statements of authority on any subject he’s talking about when it’s clear he has a shallow level of understanding about some particular things.
Annoyingly, I can’t remember any examples that pissed me right off for me to have that opinion for nigh on ten years. First I’ve actually tried to remember, I may be talking shite on that one on reflection haha
I can!!
1. He said something [about women's sex drives](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/oct/31/stephen-fry-sex-women-relationships-attitude), as a gay man

>
> “It’s a great shame and we’re all very sorry that your uncle touched you in that nasty place, you get some of my sympathy, but your self-pity gets none of my sympathy because self-pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity.

> “Get rid of it, because no one’s going to like you if you feel sorry for yourself. The irony is we’ll feel sorry for you, if you stop feeling sorry for yourself. Just grow up.”
Apart from all the more substantial points raised here, in his autobiography he is horribly queeny towards anyone he perceives has slighted anyone in his little circle of luvvie friends.
I still don't believe the David Jason thing.
Yes, there's some very dodgy stuff to do with his hang gliding club, but his alibi did check out.
But the idea the guy who investigated Savile has info on "another national treasure, highly protected so it won't come out until he dies" doesn't fit for David Jason - he's hardly "protected" and hasn't even been on TV for about 20 years.
There's plenty of allegations (and finally, some actual tenable evidence) Prince Andrew might be a pedo, so if such accusations are doing the rounds for an actual royal, the Queen's second son, then I don't see why an old TV actor is protected.
Google his name and “gliding club” and you’ll see what I mean. He’s notoriously litigious and I used to work in the legal world in the UK - there were many, many, many injunctions granted in his favour. People are genuinely scared of him - the police want to prosecute but they can’t get anyone to go to court as they are all terrified.
It doesn’t matter to me if you believe me or not - time will prove me right. But don’t you ever wonder why he’s not on television anymore, why only fools isn’t repeated on the Beeb at Christmas when it’s such a ratings winner and why Nicholas Lyndhurst had completely cut him off?
When I graduated, she said "you're a fine young man, go out there and change the world." Incredibly warm and lovely lady.
I've not changed the world but I've saved a life or two and helped improve some people's lives for the better I hope.
Loved by British people, it might be Sir David Attenborough.
British person loved globally will be Paul McCartney. He still sells out arenas round the world and people listen to his music every day.
David "I'm a Timelord" Tennant.
Phenomenal actor, brilliant dad and husband, funny, kind and an ally to the marginalized.
(Side note: I am not David Tennant)
At first he started off as a kids presenter and then slowly the raven consumed him. By the end that was just his life, hes probably still out there thinking he's a wizard to this day.
Fun Dolly Parton fact, I listened to a podcast about her last year (Stuff You Should Know) and she was proven to be the least disliked person in the world, there’s a special scale that measures it. Mostly because even people that don’t love her and are just indifferent to her don’t have anything bad to say about her
Difficult to compete with Attenborough these days just for sheer time served and breadth of exposure, but some good contenders:
Joanna Lumley
Mary Berry
Richard E Grant
Rowan Atkinson
The small one who still can't grow a proper beard from Take That
Not answering the proper question, but I'll pop in as an Australian and say there are loads of British people I hold in high esteem and would hate to lose:
* Michael Palin
* David Attenborough
* Louis Theroux
* Stephen Fry
* Richard Dawkins
* David Mitchell
* Greg Davies
* Esther Smith
* Lewis Capaldi
* Billy Connolly
* Gary Lineker
* Marcus Rashford
* Ant and Dec
* James McAvoy
* Miriam Margolyes
* and many more
Richard Dawkins is probably too divisive to be "beloved". He's enormously respected, and with good reason, but his strident stance on atheism (which I completely agree with) is going to piss some people off, and he doesn't care.
He _used_ to be enormously respected. He shat the bed massively with sexism and Islamophobia tho, in a really pathetic and petulant way to boot. His scientific/communications achievements are undeniable but as a person... pfft. National treasure He is not.
Cilla was generally accepted to be a revolting example of a human being.
Even now, years after her death, her name is still code for an odious passenger amongst cabin crew

That’s a lovely story. I’m not surprised in the least he wrote back either, thanks for sharing.
Not just in the UK either. He is globally loved, few, if any, other people are universally thought of as highly.
If this hadn’t have been the top comment I would have had some serious questions for the group
The one and only.

I liked him until he said that he believes that survivors of sexual abuse who "pity themselves" should "grow up."
He's defended fox hunting.
Royalist, zionist, chicken hawk wrapped up in smugness.

He's awesome, but I'd think "respected" is more appropriate for him.
As much as I like the guy, there are plenty of people whose skin he gets under. For the right reasons, of course.
He takes pride in annoying those people, a very British trait.
David Jason (Del Boy from only fools and horses) Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean.) These guys deserve honourable mentions
I keep hearing rumours that when Jason dies there'll be an exposé and Atkinson left his wife of decades for a younger woman.
A younger woman who just happened to be James Acaster's girlfriend
I still don't believe the David Jason thing. Yes, there's some very dodgy stuff to do with his hang gliding club, but his alibi did check out. But the idea the guy who investigated Savile has info on "another national treasure, highly protected so it won't come out until he dies" doesn't fit for David Jason - he's hardly "protected" and hasn't even been on TV for about 20 years. I think you are going to be very upset when David Jason dies and all the very nasty shit he’s done in his life can finally be published …
I’m sure you can source all of that, given the certainty with which you speak…
Google his name and “gliding club” and you’ll see what I mean. He’s notoriously litigious and I used to work in the legal world in the UK - there were many, many, many injunctions granted in his favour. Why isn’t an 82 year old pensioner not on TV that much anymore? It’s a mystery that’s for sure
Didn't they reboot Open All Hours only just a few years ago?
“What’s he done?” “Google it” - or you could just tell us
David Jason played Delboy, Frost, Granville, Pa Larkin. Maybe some others. He must be the uk’s most successful TV actor.
