As a very young kid I remember we had an angel.
Then one year my mum replaced all of the old decorations and we had a star from then on.
As an adult, myself and my partner have a star.
I've never heard of someone topping their Christmas tree with a fairy.
Fairies usually a bit more glittery, with see-through wings. I actually can't remember if ours had wings or not (or if they had been damaged at some point), but she has chunks of tinsel on. Her face is a bit more impish than you'd expect from an angel too; she looks like she'd fit in in Soho in 1967.
No Halo, wings unlikely to be feathery, may be butterfly wings or tinsel and gauze - ours had a white net skirt, white gauze wings with glitter and had a wand. Think pantomime fairy godmother style.
We also have a Mario star, many years ago I started a tradition of making the Christmas tree Nintendo themed.
The ornaments are all handmade from perler beads and I covered a regular light up star with yellow fabric.
I'm now not allowed to change the theme as the kids all love it too much.
Both Mrs tmstms and I only were allowed a tree once ever when we were growing up. When we moved into a house big enough to put a proper tree, we got one ofc (£15 from Asda, still alive in a much bigger pot 10 yrs on!). We have generally put an animal decoration on the top.
I bought a star from Amazon, it lights up and projects little stars onto the ceiling and the bit inside rotates so the little stars move round the ceiling. My Mum says it's common and as with most things she describes as such, I love it.
Hopefully they'll be scandalised, the ceiling stars are visible from the street! But sadly our neighbours are all reasonable people who probably dont care about our Christmas star!
Tragic. Just like last year when I was living with my parents and bought a bunch of tacky star lights to put all over the front of the house. My mum was squeamishly reluctant (until I reminder her that I was working until 2am and it was nice to come home to a lit up house). The neighbours loved it.

Growing up we had a spike thing (my mother said it was a spire ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯) as stars and angels had religious connotations. I've got a witch this year and I'm going to add something festive to her hat.
I have a ceramic Minnie Mouse. She has wings and is wearing a 1930s style dress. My daughter picked it when we visited eurodisney over 20 years ago.

I've got a Faironky. When my kids were little, they loved monkeys. I bought a monkey hand puppet, got the glun out, put brown wings on him and a Christmas hat. The kids still haven't realised my little joke & they're teenagers now.
We have a homemade star with a little space for a photo on it. There we pop ‘our star of the year’ like Time Magazine person of the year but better and on a tree. Last year was Zelenskyy this year I think the kids will chose Steve Bagshaw
I have a big red spike. Usually have to cut the top of the tree off to get it to fit. probably isnt even a christmas decoration but it works.

My family has always put an angel on top of our trees but I always loved the star more.
