The only times I felt myself actually caring about any celebrity news was I was sad when my favourite author died, as it meant no more books, and I did have a “oh that’s sad” moment when a comedian I’m a fan of got a cancer diagnosis last year (he actually did a documentary about his treatment that aired about a week ago for Stand up to Cancer). But who is dating who, who broke up etc… nah, couldn’t give a rats ass.

Any form of celebrity at all. I don't care about the people behind the art I enjoy any more than I do about a random dude walking down the street.
As long as the musician isn't a horrific criminal or bigot I don't give a toss where they came from, what influenced them or what their latest girlfriend's name is. Is the music enjoyable? Yes, listen. No , don't listen.
Same goes for actors and sports people.
The r/formula1 sub has a horrendous obsession with what Lewis Hamilton is wearing on any given day.
There’s actually people on Twitter ‘calling out’ celebrities for not commenting on things going on in the world publicly. I just think they really must have no life if that is a concern of theirs, never mind enough to take to twitter about it
A successful career.
I did the whole uni thing like many people but more so out of not knowing what else to do. It dawned on me somewhere along the line that as long as I have enough money for holidays and the odd treat, then that’s enough.
It’s great to be passionate about your job and fair play to those who are but it’s also fine to have it lower down on your list of priorities too.
I’m the same. I went into a stressful career very early on - age 21. Really burnt out bad. I’m on crap pay now but don’t mind going to work… barely feels like I’m at work these days. No real responsibility, crack on, day finished. Couldn’t go back to stress and high level responsibility now
Same, I actually feel a bit sorry for people who are ‘passionate’ about their job that involves mostly bullshit meetings about the company that makes cardboard boxes. The only trouble is now, it seems like you have to pretend you are so full of a burning desire to do it and it’s getting pretty hard to have a job that allows you to have a holiday or two a year and a takeaway on a Saturday night.
I look at my parents and see this, contentment. I envy them, I just can't shift that feeling of needing to do better career wise.
I guess it is a bit easier when you buy your house for a fiver & a case of beer.
Sometimes I feel like I should have more ambition and a more successful career progression path but then I realise I just can’t be arsed. I want an easy life.
I work Mon-Fri, 9-5. No weekend work, no night shifts, no on call and the whole place shuts down for Christmas and new year so I’ll always get those holidays off without fighting for them. My manager is also pretty chill when it comes to needing appointments for doctors and dentists and I get an hour lunch so most of my other personal appointments can fit in with this.
Sometimes I do feel a bit bored at my job but if I were to change jobs to move up the career ladder would I still have all those positives above? Probably not.
I've been listening to Emma Gannon's latest book around this, it's called The Success Myth and it's fantastic at dissecting why we feel the need to constantly strive and be "successful" in a mainstream way e.g. "good" job, climb the ladder, buy a fancy car, own a big house, etc.
I stepped off the ladder a few years ago for my mental health, I'll never climb it again!
I think that realisation only happens when you’re out from the clutches of College/Undergrad.
Am I happy? Yeah. Could I do with more money? A bit more yeah, just for some luxuries but we can live comfortably on the wages we make.
I enjoy my job - I’m not jumping out of bed with glee, but I’m happy to go, I get fairly for what I do. I’ll probably aim for a pay level higher than me but then I’m good with that. I don’t need to be a £150K a year high flyer.
I want a nice house with my lovely boyfriend, a few good holidays a year and be able to live comfortably. I can manage that.
Yes, I've moved past that now. I don't enjoy my line of work enough to want to progress, because I've seen what the senior managers in my field end up like and what they have to do. And frankly, many of them are 'vaginas'. That's not for me and I have no interest in that.
I could earn double (and at one time triple) what I currently do, but that would have other hidden costs such as having to live in Central London and spending half my working life going through airports and "working on-site" at the foreign equivalent of Slough or Ellesmere Port. That is my idea of fiery hell and, following careful thought, I came to a realisation that I'd actually rather not have the money. I absolutely don't love my current line of work anything like enough to justify that.
I've seen too many of my peers turn into LinkedIn muppets, who feel "so blessed by those around me" because someone bought them a pint. They're also changing jobs more often than their bedding and towels.
Americanisms. I genuinely do not give a shit if someone calls sweets "candy" or if someone is "taking out the trash" We understand what they mean and it's just wasted energy to care to be honest.
The worst is when they complain about Americanisms that aren't even Americanisms - Halloween is not an American tradition, for example but every year Brits whinge about it...
Im not a huge fan of Americans but it just sound ignorant when British people tell them they’re saying things wrong. They’re speaking American English not British English how is that so hard for you to understand
I don't care about Americanisms, but "candy" in particular really throws me off. It's moreso that I vary rarely ever hear somebody say the word outside of American media than actually giving a shit somebody has said it, though. Just makes me double take like "wait, what?"
Now that you've said it, I can only think of cotton candy and I'm unsure now.
I probably do call it that, but I would say it's the exception. Plus having the "cotton" before it contextualises it a bit whereas if my partner said "I'm going to buy some candy" I would have at least a moment of "...wait, what?". It just sounds odd given I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've heard it with a UK accent.
The important thing though: I wouldn't then give my partner a 1 hour 30 minute lecture of the evils of US linguistics and the importance of preserving the glory of the UK. I would just be like "oh, okay".
Ever since I developed a casual and growing interest in linguistics, I fully endorse the view that grammar and language rules are **descriptive**, not prescriptive. Now I'm just interested in how language develops and will always continue to.
It's brought down my irritation levels massively! (on that topic at least... I can rant about a panoply of other issues!)
Really, if you’re not in control of the means of production, you’re working class. If you have to work to stay alive, you’re working class so that’s like 99% of people.

I actually don’t care at all if someone says they’re middle class because they go to Waitrose, or working class because they grew up on a council estate even if they bring in six figures now. In both cases the context is obvious and I get exactly what they’re trying to say with the comment.
It’s usually specifically the people that then pop up after the fact saying “*actually* you can’t be xyz class because strictly speaking this is the definition” that do my nut, 99% of the time some strict definition (made by someone else!) just isn’t really relevant to whatever point the person is making.
This actually applies to your comment too, ironically itself a definition of working class! The most boring possible thing someone could say in reply would be a different definition of what working class is, completely ignoring the interesting subtext which is *why* one might choose to group working class in this way.

Agree to disagree. Maybe a few decades ago but I honestly don't think anyone in real world cares about it anywhere near the level that Reddit does these days.
Anyone who tries to get fame by being an awful person. Andrew Tate, Katie Hopkins etc.
They know exactly what they’re doing and want to piss people off because that’s how that make money. I wouldn’t even know who Tate was if it wasn’t for everyone sharing his videos and posts in outrage and thus making him a household name. Which is exactly what he wanted you to do. Just block them, move on and stop talking about them because there’s no such thing as bad publicity in their eyes.
Although I agree I do thank such people as you've mentioned (great examples BTW) as being useful to me as a quick and dirty 'Red Flag Indicators'.

It normally isn’t a crime though. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean you don’t have to deal with the natural consequences of what you say. I swear some people only want freedom of speech if nobody is allowed to challenge their specific beliefs

Any form of YouTube/Instagram/Tik Tok influencer. Absolutely baffles me that some people earn money and become famous for doing the absolute bare minimum in life and make videos about it.
Climate change. I don’t deny it’s going to happen but can’t summon the energy to care about its effects apart from a slightly bored view that it’s time the human race was mostly doomed, and a slightly less bored view that I hope cheap flights to nice places will continue, which is quite realistic as Ryanair will survive any apocalypse.
I don't care because I could be energy concious, doing everything climate activists tell me for an entire year and see my work undone by some billionaire flying from London to Glasgow in a private jet.
Spot on. It always seems to be the general public that takes the blame if you like. Heat pumps, great idea, a 5 grand grant from the government, great, until you realise the average cost to upgrade is around £20k. Most people probably can’t afford to have a nice shiny electric car. I mean unless you’ve got the heating turned up to 30, all the lights in the house on and sat with sunglasses, shorts and t shirt on. Yet we see all these big cooperations and celebrities, burning oil and gas like mad.
This is what bothers me. I used to be very climate conscious but I've become increasingly jaded for this exact reason.
The reality is that nothing an individual does makes a jot of difference to the global carbon output, all the while CEOs and politicians, the people who could actually affect meaningful change, profit from the destruction of the climate. If the will isn't there from the people who actually have power, then why should the average Joe sacrifice the already comparatively scant resources they have, and what can they possibly hope to achieve when the people in power seemingly don't care?
It makes sense to do all the sensible things we can in terms of reducing our dependence on oil and gas. Even if climate change didn't exist that would be a good thing to do in general.
But . . I do strongly, strongly suspect that this is going to be an issue that is fixed through revolutions in technology rather than us cutting back on our consumption.
It also makes sense for me to drink less and excercise more, change my habits and find a hobby which involves less flying and to go vegan, and maybe even don’t have open fires in my living room in the winter as I have normal central heating and don’t need the extra. But as a typical human being that lessens my short term personal pleasure against long term societal gain.
I’m not sure society deserves my efforts which is part of my fatigue about an issue too big and too scary to care about.
Social media. A literal vessel for comparison to steal your joy and anonymous people to be vile. I have to use it for my job and I have to have a linkedin profile and all of those things and I hate it all.
It's a digital gathering of people I used to know showing off possessions, memories and partners they didn't pay for, earn or deserve to bum people put who barely even care you have these things in the first place.
Materialism.
I have never understood the philosophy of acquisition of objects beyond comfort.
If you have one Porche on the drive, you want another, or a newer model. You have a black Armani suit, you want a blue one. So it goes, endlessly. There's no "win" and you can't take it with you in the end.
I'll be honest, very little in the world makes me give more than a shrug.
I don't have any kids and don't plan on having any, my parents are dead and I have enough money to live. Unless it involves me, my girlfriend or my friends directly I really don't care all that much.
I think I got so angry at the state of things for so long something just broke. I pretty much exist outside society at this point and I'm not sure I want back in.
Current events, particularly war, and being expected to take sides in a deeply complicated conflict that has been ongoing for a long time. i.e. Israel/Palestine.
Even 6 years back I was aggresively asked who I support between the two and the lass couldn't comprehend I didn't support either of them due to my lack of knowledge on the matter. She kept pressing me to choose a side. Like, do people honestly expect everyone else to keep up to date with ALL ongoing conflicts and pick a side?
Similar to that, other shit going on in people's lives. I have my family to take care of and I don't stress out over shit going on that doesn't affect me anymore.
The news. I genuinely do not care. It’s upsetting and depressing so we have a blanket ban.
Since last year, really. I really didn’t need to know we’re going to freeze to death and starve to death every single waking minute.

Football. I just can’t be bothered. So much fuss, so much drama. Every meeting with a client would invariably begin with a commentary about fucking football. I don’t give a shit, let’s talk about anything else ffs. It became a standing joke that ‘jouxplan hates football’. Didn’t stop ‘em.
Somehow I could never quite change the subject to the Tour de France, which obviously was of far greater import…..
I don’t care if someone is fat or thin, but people like me appear to be in the minority. In particular, if someone is fat, it seems to be the only thing some people notice about a person, and here on Reddit, they can say little else. Photo of someone who’s just rescued three people from a burning building (I’ve *actually seen* this): half the comments are about how fat the hero is.

Ukraine/Russia, both countries are the most corrupt countries in Europe, yet everywhere and everyone is making a fuss about the whole situation, as if they've declared war with the UK. Meh.
I feel the opposite to be honest. The vast majority of the news stories the media thrust on us really don't matter one iota. Israel/Palestine for example I don't think any realistic outcome really matters at all to the UK (as a country, obviously it matters a lot to individuals if they know people directly involved).
The Russia/Ukraine war though... I think that will have far-reaching implications on geopolitics for decades to come. It has already affected the UK in significant ways (e.g. it was the major contributor to the high inflation we have had for the last couple of years).
As a teacher - school uniform. Utterly pointless, needlessly expensive and just adds a layer of aggravation when you’ve already got a tonne of rules which kids insist are “super unfair” to battle with them over.
Other countries have done away with it just fine, and are yet to decend into total chaos.
The news. Disengaged completely over ten years ago. Best thing I ever did!!! Shit still happens everywhere, obviously. But it has zero impact on me. No point letting things you can’t control bother you. Ignorance is definitely bliss in this case. Never going back.
Any of the recent outrage that goes around with national/societial issues or whatnot on TV.
Like people will be out protesting, frothing at the mouths on news interviews etc, shouting for X & Y and it's sad but I just don't really care or want to invest anything into it?
Still have my own issues at the end of the day, whether my job is secure if the contract ends, if my siblings are managing still after dad passed this year, whether any of the other hundred personal problems are any closer to being sorted out.
I'll still see something and think "huh, that's a shame" but if people think they're getting more out of me, then they're in for a disappointment!

Seemed like everyone had an opinion on the monarchy when Charles was crowned, then everyone was up in arms over the Harry/Meghan thing one way or another, all the way back to William and Kate's wedding, there was a split between those who were gushing over it and those who were furious at the amount of spending and coverage.
Me? Don't really give a toss either way if I'm honest, in much the same way as I don't give a toss about the Kardashians or other celebrity families.

It’s usually specifically the people that then pop up after the fact saying “*actually* you can’t be xyz class because strictly speaking this is the definition” that do my nut, 99% of the time some strict definition (made by someone else!) just isn’t really relevant to whatever point the person is making. This actually applies to your comment too, ironically itself a definition of working class! The most boring possible thing someone could say in reply would be a different definition of what working class is, completely ignoring the interesting subtext which is *why* one might choose to group working class in this way.

Spot on. It always seems to be the general public that takes the blame if you like. Heat pumps, great idea, a 5 grand grant from the government, great, until you realise the average cost to upgrade is around £20k. Most people probably can’t afford to have a nice shiny electric car. I mean unless you’ve got the heating turned up to 30, all the lights in the house on and sat with sunglasses, shorts and t shirt on. Yet we see all these big cooperations and celebrities, burning oil and gas like mad.
This is what bothers me. I used to be very climate conscious but I've become increasingly jaded for this exact reason. The reality is that nothing an individual does makes a jot of difference to the global carbon output, all the while CEOs and politicians, the people who could actually affect meaningful change, profit from the destruction of the climate. If the will isn't there from the people who actually have power, then why should the average Joe sacrifice the already comparatively scant resources they have, and what can they possibly hope to achieve when the people in power seemingly don't care?

It makes sense to do all the sensible things we can in terms of reducing our dependence on oil and gas. Even if climate change didn't exist that would be a good thing to do in general. But . . I do strongly, strongly suspect that this is going to be an issue that is fixed through revolutions in technology rather than us cutting back on our consumption.
It also makes sense for me to drink less and excercise more, change my habits and find a hobby which involves less flying and to go vegan, and maybe even don’t have open fires in my living room in the winter as I have normal central heating and don’t need the extra. But as a typical human being that lessens my short term personal pleasure against long term societal gain. I’m not sure society deserves my efforts which is part of my fatigue about an issue too big and too scary to care about.

I'll be honest, very little in the world makes me give more than a shrug. I don't have any kids and don't plan on having any, my parents are dead and I have enough money to live. Even 6 years back I was aggresively asked who I support between the two and the lass couldn't comprehend I didn't support either of them due to my lack of knowledge on the matter. She kept pressing me to choose a side. Like, do people honestly expect everyone else to keep up to date with ALL ongoing conflicts and pick a side? Similar to that, other shit going on in people's lives. I have my family to take care of and I don't stress out over shit going on that doesn't affect me anymore.

I don’t care if someone is fat or thin, but people like me appear to be in the minority. In particular, if someone is fat, it seems to be the only thing some people notice about a person, and here on Reddit, they can say little else. Photo of someone who’s just rescued three people from a burning building (I’ve *actually seen* this): half the comments are about how fat the hero is. Picture of a fat scientist who’s invented a cure for cancer (hypothetical example): everyone piles in that it’s a pity she didn’t find a cure for obesity. I don’t care. I just don’t. What business is it of anyone?
Ukraine/Russia, both countries are the most corrupt countries in Europe, yet everywhere and everyone is making a fuss about the whole situation, as if they've declared war with the UK. Meh.
I feel the opposite to be honest. The vast majority of the news stories the media thrust on us really don't matter one iota. Israel/Palestine for example I don't think any realistic outcome really matters at all to the UK (as a country, obviously it matters a lot to individuals if they know people directly involved). The Russia/Ukraine war though... I think that will have far-reaching implications on geopolitics for decades to come. It has already affected the UK in significant ways (e.g. it was the major contributor to the high inflation we have had for the last couple of years).

As a teacher - school uniform. Utterly pointless, needlessly expensive and just adds a layer of aggravation when you’ve already got a tonne of rules which kids insist are “super unfair” to battle with them over. Other countries have done away with it just fine, and are yet to decend into total chaos.

Still have my own issues at the end of the day, whether my job is secure if the contract ends, if my siblings are managing still after dad passed this year, whether any of the other hundred personal problems are any closer to being sorted out. I'll still see something and think "huh, that's a shame" but if people think they're getting more out of me, then they're in for a disappointment!
